Principal’s ReportThis fortnight saw a lot of curricular and extracurricular activity, across the campus and at several off campus venues. During Week 6 our campus celebrates Under 8s Day with ourannual Fun Day. This special event brings together students, teachers and family members in a celebration of Early Yearslearning and the partnership between home and school. Thankyou to this year’s committee for their organisation of the event.

Our Step Up team is currently providing a Prep literacy boostprogram across all prep classes – using a range of talented andtrained support staff.

Earlier this year Mrs Annette Archibald retired after a virtuallifetime at Camp Hill – as a student, parent and staff member.Mrs Archibald was our library teacher aide for 30 years and overthat time contributed to thousands of students’ love of literacy. We wish her well in her retirement and will certainly continue tosee her on campus as a grandmother of a current student.

Recently I met with officers from Education QueenslandRegional Infrastructure, and a private consultant, to discuss therecent asbestos incidents at school. I am waiting for a reportfrom the consultant, which I will provide to the community. At this stage we will be: opening up the carpark in front ofthe dental building; leaving the banks on Wiles Street closedfor management of the erosion (not asbestos related) until weconfirm a plan to secure the banks; leave the area immediatelyoutside the School of Arts Hall (OSHC) secured while we waitfor the consultant’s recommendations. the roll each day. Please ensure that you advise the schoolof your son/daughter’s absence by contacting the telephoneAbsence line (phone number 3900 9460 or email the school on([email protected]). This SMS system will ensurethat families are aware of any student unexplainednon-attendance in a timely manner.

Each afternoon our school tuckshop provides afternoon teato our students. I can highly recommend the products andam confident that families will appreciate the opportunity ofproviding their children with quality food after a busy schoolday.

Our school Stop Drop and Go zone is currently moving in anorganised manner and I would like to thank families for followingthe rules of the zone. Recently a young student was injured at aschool Drop Off zone, this incident has certainly highlighted theinherent safety issues associated with these high traffic areas. Please be patient when moving through the zone as the safetyof every Camp Hill student is our priority at all times.

As we move into the cooler months I encourage families toname all winter clothing. Clothes are being taken off, and puton, several times during the school day and we will alwaysattempt to return named items to their owners.

A reminder – please do not share photos of children taken atschool (other than your own) on social media. Some families donot agree to photos of their daughter/son being published onpublic websites.

I hope everyone is enjoying the fading autumn weather – wecan certainly feel the cooler weather approaching with greatspeed.

Best wishes

Deputy Principal’s ReportOne of the roles of schooling is to help young people learnto socialise and get along with each other. Children learn andexperience the concept of friendship at an early age, as wellas the challenges different personalities can place upon eachother.

Children’s interactions and friendship groups can change fromday to day, often creating some anxiety, frustration andsadness for some or all parties. These moments are often shortlived, but do create a cause of concern for parents who aremanaging their child’s emotional state.

Many parents come and ask the school what they can do abouttheir child experiencing difficulties with friendship groups. Someresponses might be:-

Children will develop many friendships as they grow up andthese will change as their interests and personalities developand mature. With support from both school and home, children’s schooling should be fun and social.

School ParkingAs you are aware, there is limited closeparking around the school grounds. Pleasebe mindful of parking signage and road ruleswhen picking up or dropping off. A numberof local residents complain regularly whenour parents park across their driveways, making it difficult forthem to get in or out of their homes. Please be aware that theseresidents will photograph your number plates to send to thepolice and you will be fined. Please be respectful to all our localresidents.

• Find someone else to play with! Schools promotehaving a variety of friendship groups. Childrenshouldn’t rely on only one or two friends.

• Understand that it is alright for friends to have otherfriends. Some young children struggle with the ideathat they might have to share someone.

• ‘Tomorrow is a brand new day!’ In most caseschildren will have forgotten about the problems fromthe day before and everything will be back to normal, however, it is still good to suggest making otherfriends.

• No-one can force someone to be your friend. Gettingangry, saying things like, “I don’t like you!” or “Youcan’t play with us!” isn’t going to win friendship. Atthe other extreme, buying gifts, giving money, ‘givingin’ to another’s every want won’t necessarily result ina friendship.

• Children need to be themselves, act naturally and befriendly to others in order to earn friendship. Having asense of fun can also be a strong drawcard.

• More importantly, in most cases, children can oftenfind the solutions for themselves with some positivesupport from parents and educators. Sometimes it isnecessary to make a distinction between ‘children’sbusiness’ and ‘adult business.’ Children will learnmuch from solving a problem themselves withminimal adult intervention. Our Habits of Mindprogram helps students to do this very well.

Habits of the MindIn his ‘20 Things We Should Say More Often’ presentation,Kid President offers some words of wisdom. Of particular noteis Number 15 ‘You can do it’, Number 14 ‘Before you saysomething about the barbecue sauce on someone else’s shirt, have a look at the barbecue sauce on your own shirt’ andNumber 2 ‘It is ok to disagree, but it is not ok to be mean!’ Theyear six students have made up some of their own ‘things weshould say more often’ to each other.

The children in the Junior Campus re-visited Olivia and OscarOrganisation. They are looking at setting goals, doing their bestand making sure they have enough time to get things done bynot wasting time.

Year 4 students are focusing on Habit Number 8 ‘Applying PastKnowledge to New Situations’. This habit reminds us to useknowledge and previous experiences when faced with a newsituation.

OSHC News

Many new families to our service may not beaware that we have native bees on site atCamp Hill OSHC. The reason for this is that‘sustainability’ is embedded into ourprogram by both desire and in adherence toour regulated framework (which so many people are stillunaware we have). Our bees do from time to time provide uswith a delicious citrus infused honey, but their introduction toOSHC was for much bigger reasons.

The global bee population, including that in Australia, is inquite rapid decline. This is largely attributed to disease andpesticides. This is a much bigger problem than just a potentiallack of honey. Bees, both domestic and wild, are responsiblefor pollinating a staggering percent of both crops and wildplants. Their reduction has a very real threat on agriculture andeven the propagation of natural forest. It was with this chiefconsideration in mind that we acquired them.

Over the period of time we have had the bees, we have noticeda direct effect on our fruit and vegetable gardens. In additionto this, it has given staff an amazing opportunity to discusssymbiotic relationships that occur in nature and are oftenoverlooked. And yes, every now and again, delicious honey.
