smartcube CIS - Camera Image Scanner

IntroductionArchiving and documenting of recovered samples is an essential task in drilling projects. smartcube and the GFZ Potsdam have developed the Drilling Information System (smartDIS) as a tool providing this service on the drill site and - through the World Wide Web - to scientific teams world-wide. Optical scans of e.g. core surfaces are used in this system as a reference to integrate all data sets acquired on these samples later on. The archived core scans are used to setup a virtual core archive that is utilized for instance as resource for specific sampling from every web-connected computer for later investigations in laboratories.

To archive high quality optical scans of slabbed or 360° core-surfaces, cuttings, and even thin sections, smartcube has developed the camera image scanner smartcube CIS.

smartcube CIS - Camera Image Scanner

OverviewsmartCIS (Camera Image Scanner), is a simple to handle, robust and light-weight device, constructed with an off-the-shelf high, resolution digital still camera, innovative small electric motors for roller and camera movement and steering without special hardware directly through a standard PC or laptop. Its weight is only 28 kg (up to 42 kg, depending of the lenght) with the capability to scan objects of up to 1,60 meter length delivering pictures with a maximum resolution of 1000 dpi.

The smartCIS software can be operated in a stand alone mode with scans stored and used on the steering computer, but the software includes also a special interface to communicate with smartDIS. This combination of smartCIS and smartDIS creates a new quality of core archives. The core surfaces scanned with smartCIS are archived and documented with smartDIS. This archive can be accessed through different interfaces, especially via the Internet through the Web interface of smarDIS defining a Virtual Core Archive.

Technical overview

Technical changes possible

The described image resolution and the maximal core diameter is depending on the mountedcamera and lens type. The maximal resolutions / core diameters described above are for the line scan camera with 4080 pixel per line and a 50 / 75 mm lens.smartCIS can be connected to any computer that has one Ethernet(1000Mb)-port and one RS232-port or one USB(2.0)-port. We recommend to choose the preconfigured laptop option or a computer with 2048MB RAM,Intel Pentium 4 (2GHz) or better and Windows XP operatingsystem as minimal hardware configuration.
