CHALLENGEI have independently researched and done the following-.Camera angles..Movements..I have also created a visual representation of the different camera angles using different photos from the films Kill Bill 1 & 2, and have also included a description alongside that explains how the technique is used in the industry.

Page 3: Camera angles new

CAMERA ANGLE- MEDIUM CLOSE UPMedium close ups are used to show a character in a scene from a setting which is in-between a mid shot and a close up. This type of shot is used when the character is saying something of interest. The reason for the camera being closer than normal is because it builds more suspense than a mid shot etc. At this point, if the camera was to go much closer to the face it could end up looking too intense if the situation was just a normal conversation. Example in film- This shot clearly show the character’s body language and at the same time still allows the viewer to see part of the background too.

-The Bride

CAMERA ANGLE- CLOSE UPAs a continuation of a medium close up, the close up shot too is used for the same reasons. However, at this point the close up shot will make the viewer feel more interested in what the person is talking about in a scene, as there will be very little extra background to focus in on. Making one of the only features of this shot the upper section of the persons head and shoulders. Example in film- As the camera is at a close enough distance from the face, each and ever y facial expression can be recorded in detail. For example, in this photo we can tell that the character is intending to do something evil, due to the menacing look on her face.

CAMERA ANGLE- EXTREME CLOSE UPExtreme close ups are most commonly used in high suspense moments during a film or T.V show. This technique is done to focus the attention on to one person; who in most cases is under a lot of pressure. By using this angle the viewer has a clear view of the characters eyes, making them feel an emotional connection with them, as the experience for the character is usually one of emotional traumaExample in film-In this scene the camera is positioned very close to the eyes the character, this is done to show the intensity of emotion

-The Bride

CAMERA ANGLE- ESTABLISHING SHOTEstablishing shots are used to show the viewer the area of a new scene so that they are able to become familiar with it. These angles usually pan out quite far to show the whole section in which the film is situated in. Normally extreme long shots are used in the duration of establishing shots as they enable the director to get a lot of detail into one scene. For example- In a city scene the camera may focus on well know and important buildings as they will make it very easy for the viewer to know where the film is being recordedExample in film- This room shot allows the viewer to know exactly where all the characters are stood in a scene of a film.

CAMERA ANGLE- MID SHOTA mid shot is basically a camera angle which is taken from a medium distance to the items of interest. It is used a lot throughout the duration of the dialogue spoken between a small group of characters. As this the case, part of the background can still be seen, so that the viewer knows where the characters are stood in a shot. Overall this angle allows the director to record the facial expressions/body language of the actors, making it good for dynamic sections of a film.Example in film-This scene uses this camera angle as the person of interest is included. As this is the case the viewer can easily establish who the character is.

-The Bride-Wedding Rehearsal

Page 8: Camera angles new

CAMERA ANGLE- WIDE SHOTWide shots are used to display the full area that a character is in. These types of shots allow the whole setting of a film to be seen with the character included. Even though a wide shot sounds similar to an extreme shot, they are not the same. Wide shots are used to show more of the actor in the film than the actual setting, however, detailed backgrounds can still be included.Example in film-In this scene all characters can be seen clearly. The background can also be seen, yet the focus is more directed onto the people in the shot.

-The Deadly Viper Assassin squad-The Massacre at Two Pines

Page 9: Camera angles new

CAMERA ANGLE- EXTREME WIDE SHOTExtreme wide shots are used to add a large distances between the point of view and the subject; in most cases the subject that is being recorded is very difficult to see, in some cases it might not even be visible in the shot. In the slide above, an extreme long shot is mentioned. Both the extreme long shot, and wide shot are very similar and are both used to give a feeling of high impact to a scene. Example in film-The use of distance in this shot makes the whole scene seem more intense as there is more of an area to film. As this is the case, every little changing detail can be noticed.

CAMERA ANGLE- CUTAWAYCutaways are the parts of a scene when the camera changes from one subject to another by completely changing the location of where is being filmed. Once the cut away has been done, it then relates back to the first scene which was shown in the first shot.In films this type of shot can be noticed in a conversation in which the two people are not in the same room. For example- Two people are on the phone together. As they are not in the same room the camera uses individual shots of each person, and then in editing the shots are put together.Example in film-Two different sections of the scene are shown at the same time. Both of these images have used together in complement of each other to show the build up to the next section

-The Bride and Elle Driver hospital scene

Page 11: Camera angles new

CAMERA ANGLE- TWO SHOTThe two shot angle is used in many scenes when there are two people having a conversation. This shot is different to a normal mid shot (etc) as the characters talking can be positioned in any section of the shot. As long as both actors are in the shot, the camera angle will remain a two shot scene; even when one of them is in the background of the scene and the other is in the foreground.Example in film-This is an unusual shot to take for a conversation as it does not show the full emotion of the characters when they are talking to each other. However, for this scene in the film it made sense, as both actors were moving quickly

-The Bride and Bill fight scene

CAMERA ANGLE- OVER THE SHOULDERThe over the shoulder shot is one type of camera angle that is commonly used in filming. It is done by recording from behind one of the actors shoulders and continuing the shot until the other character changes his/her actions. It is mainly used in dialogue situations, and in some cases can be used to build suspense as it slightly distances the view from the situation.Example in film-This is a typical over the shoulder shot from the film. This angle is a success in making the viewer feel like they are there in the action along side with the actors.

The point of view camera shot is basically a technique that shows the perspective from different people/objects in a scene. The angle allows the viewer to see what the character can see, putting them directly in the same position as the people in the film. This angle can also be used on objects of interest. For example- A famous object point of view shot could be when the character in the film is opening a box and they see what is inside.Example in film-The point of view in this shot is from the car boot. This scene has been recorded by placing the camera in the back of the car boot, and by positioning it so that the actor is in view. The idea of this is that the recorded footage represents what the other character can see at that moment in time

Tracking is a shot which is done by recording a moving object and following it until the shot/scene is over. This shot can easily be achieved by using camera tracks or smaller handheld cameras. This camera movement shot usually is done to track the movement of characters in a film/ T.V programmes, but it can be used to track other things too. Such as- Animals and moving objects.Example in film-This scene shows the gang member's movement as the camera is following them down the hallway, Throughout the duration of the film, this is a recurring feature

Camera tilting is a technique that makes a shot in a film change its viewing point vertically. For this to happen the camera must stay in a fixed position, once this has been done, the camera operator can manually move the camera into the different vertical positions. This technique can be done to show another viewpoint, or simply for dramatic effect. Example in film-This is an amazing piece of cinematography which shows how the tilt angle can be used. To achieve this shot, the camera would have been placed under a glass floor. From this the camera operator would have filmed from underneath.

Page 16: Camera angles new

CAMERA MOVEMENT- ZOOMWhen filming the “zoom movement,” is used to direct the attention of the audience to one subject. As the camera gets closer to the object that its focusing on, the background of the image gets smaller, until the camera is only focusing on that one image (etc). At that point the subject becomes of high importance, as nothing else can be seen.Example in film-This angle is not only just used in this film, but it is a recurring zoom shot which is used in many of Quentin Tarantino’s films. It is taken by placing the camera in front of the actors and on the floor. Whilst this happens, the shot slowly zooms into each individual face of the people

RULES OF FRAMINGRules of framing is basically how to record footage in a professional way that allows for easy viewing. It is made up of different elements. One being composition. In the scene itself, the objects must be set up in a natural way in order for it to represent a real life setting. If the objects in a scene were out of place it could lead to the footage looking messy.Another element is how the camera operator uses certain angles when recording the actions of people. One important factor to keep in mind, is the positioning of the eyes. If they eyes appear to be looking away from the camera for a long period of time, the viewer will become less interested. Instead the will be more interested about what the actor is looking at.

THE RULES OF THIRDSThe rule of thirds, or “rule of thumb,” shot is used in both photography and in films. A grid with 9 sections is used whist filming to make the important subjects in line with one of the lines. This is done because it is said that when we look at a photo or a movie scene, it is pleasing to the eyes when things are placed within these certain guidelines. As well as this it makes a scene in a film/ T.V show feel more intense and interesting.

This is a 9 by 9 grid that I created to explain what is meant by rule of thirds
