CONVENTIONAL CAMERA ANGLES AND

MOVEMENT USED IN A HORROR TRAILER

Panning and tracking of a character, setting up a direct link with the

audience. By doing this is creates an effect that the audience is there

will the actor/actress, therefore having a more scary effect.

Low angles shots of a characters walking, creating suspense and

giving the watcher an indication something is going to happen.

Long shots of empty corridors/ large spaces, giving the audience an

uneasy feeling that something is going to be in this dark shot.

When using framing, close up shots of the main characters’ faces are

often used. Zooming in on a face helps the audience see what the

character is seeing and their reaction to it.

Medium shots to show the characters but to also see what their

surroundings are, e.g. if they are in a dark place or there may be a

quick glimpse of a killer behind them.

Hand held camera technique. This is used in many horror films to

give a home video effect that people who are watching the film may

relate to, giving the feeling that something like this could happen to

them. This is seen in The Blair Witch Project and the Paranormal

Activity series.

POSSIBLE CAMERA ANGLES/SHOTS TO USE IN

MY TRAILER

A long shot I could use a long shot or an establishing shot of the start

of my trailer to set up the setting of the plot of the trailer. This could be a

shot of the asylum to tell the audience where the whole plot line is set.

A full shot - a complete view of the characters. From this shot the

audience can take in the costumes of characters and may also help to

demonstrate the relationships between characters. By doing this in my

trailer, the audience will see the costumes and know that this trailer is

set in the 1940’s period.

A close-up This enables viewers to understand the actor's emotions

and possibly feel empathy for the character. I think I will be using a lot

of this while filming my trailer as it will be focused on the patient’s ever

changing emotions from being scared to having her personality

change, this will all be indicated in her facial expression.

An extreme close-up This technique is quite common in horror films

this type of shot creates an intense mood and provides interaction

between the audience and the viewer. Much like close up, this shot will

be focused on the girl’s emotion shown on her face.

CAMERA MOVEMENT

A tracking shot I will be using a tracking shot while the girl is

running away from the asylum, this way it gives the audience

the feeling that they are there with the character.

Panning is used to give the viewer a panoramic view of a set

or setting. This can be used to establish a scene and in my

trailer, the scene of the asylum or the woods could use this

shot.
