During our first semester we recognized the students who earned 20+ credits by celebrating with a special hot chocolate and movie day. That was a success! Now we are ready to conquer second semester! This semester will be busy.

The counselor visited classrooms to dis-cuss grad plans with all students and go over their second quarter credits some time in January.

On January 20th, Calvine and Florin High School had a financial aid night. Gradu-ating Seniors needed to take advantage of this workshop to complete their FAFSA because there will be financial aid experts to help with the application process.

January 22nd was the due date for seniors

filling out their scholarships for the Elk

All completed applications were given to

The Governing Board of Education recog-nizes that each student who receives a high school diploma has met the stand-ards of proficiency established by the school district. The specific require-ments for receipt of a high school diplo-ma are set forth in Board Policy 6146. The Board further recognizes that partic-ipation in the high school graduation ceremony is a privilege for each student, and the Board seeks to encourage and support student participation in the high school graduation ceremony but without compromising student achievement and good citizenship during the senior year of high school. To encourage and sup-port the purpose and integrity of the high school educational program during the senior year, the Board establishes the following minimum requirements for each student for participation in the high school graduation ceremony.

Achievement

During the spring semester prior to grad-uation, a student must earn 25 credits to participate in the graduation ceremony.

Good Citizenship

A senior student who has received an off-campus suspension from school in the spring semester will be notified in writing that if a second off-campus suspendable offense occurs, he/she will not be eligible to participate in the graduation ceremony. A senior student with a second off-campus suspension will be denied the privi-lege of participating in the graduation ceremony.

A senior may not attend the gradua-tion ceremony while under off-campus suspension, even if the off-campus suspension is the first off-campus suspension of the student during the senior year.

The principal of each high school will revoke a student’s privilege to partici-pate in the high school graduation ceremony if these minimum stand-ards are not met in any of the two areas in accordance with school rules which provide for due process.

Each high school student and parent/guardian shall receive annual notifica-tion of this policy. High school seniors shall also receive additional infor-mation of the policy at the beginning of the second semester.

Invocations and/or benedictions shall not be included in graduation ceremo-nies. Ceremonies or programs involv-ing prayer for graduates may not be sponsored by the school or district.

Graduation Rehearsal is mandatory and will be on Friday, May 20, 2016 at noon at Calvine High School Multi-purpose Room.

The No Excuses – Go to School

Attendance Campaign

The No Excuses – Go to School Attendance Campaign is back for the 2015/2016 school year! The campaign fo-cuses on “responsibility.” Please help your student(s) understand that being in class means being a responsible person.

Monthly incentives will continue as we reach out to the business community and each month offers a new chance for one lucky student to win a new prize. In addition to the monthly high school giveaways – just for graduating high school seniors, EGUSD is proud to announce the return of the Elk Grove Auto Mall Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive. The Attendance Drive will give one lucky senior the chance to win a $20,000 grand prize to purchase a vehicle from any of the 21 dealers at the Elk Grove Auto Mall.

To be eligible for the monthly giveaways, students must achieve perfect attendance for the past immediate month (i.e. to be eligible for the drawing in October, the student must have perfect attendance for the month of September.) To be eligible for the Elk Grove Auto Mall Graduating Seniors Attendance Drive, seniors must obtain at least five months of perfect attendance (the months do not have to be consecutive) and have at least a 2.0 GPA. A finalist from each comprehensive high school and one finalist representing all continuation high schools will be drawn in May for a chance at the $20,000 grand prize.

Increasing attendance awareness can be done by participating in our attendance awareness poster contests, and we’ve added a new Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest to invite secondary students to collaborate on submitting a PSA about the importance of regular school attendance. The winning PSAs will be used for future attendance campaigns, in District communications and online.

Studies have shown that students who attend school consistently perform better. Please remind your child of the importance of attending school regularly.

On October 7, 2015, Governor Jerry Brown signed California Senate Bill (SB) 172, which suspends administration of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) for three years. CAHSEE was originally put into place to improve student achievement in high schools and to ensure students graduate from high school with grade level skills in reading, writing, and math. All students in California public schools were required to pass the exit exam, in addi-tion to meeting other graduation requirements, to receive a high school diploma. SB 172 formally suspends the administration of the CAHSEE, as well as the requirement to pass the exam as a con-dition of receiving a diploma of graduation from high school for the 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18 school years. This means that current seniors, juniors, and sophomores are no longer required to pass the CAHSEE to graduate. During this three year exemption period, an advisory panel will make recommendations to the Superintendent of Public Instruction on the continuation of the high school exit examination and/or alternative courses of ac-tion. The State Board of Education is expected to come to a decision about the exam before the three year ex-emption period ends.
