Prayer of Praise & Thanksgiving Our hearts are full of joy, O Lord, Just thinking of the abundance of gifts you have given us, We are overwhelmed in the presence of Your love. How blessed we are just to be your children! Our hearts sing the testimony of your Word. Surrounded by your love and the love of those you have placed in our lives, we lift our hands to praise Your name. Guide us, Lord, in the strength of your love to serve you wherever you lead, Trusting in Your love and mercy, we bow before you in the name of Jesus, our Savior and Shepherd on the journey home.
So much to thank God for:
Pastor Bob & Diane Kretzschmar for being
with us on a September Anniversary Sunday.
It was good to have them back home! They
both looked great!
The visit by Pastor Roy & Ann Maack on an
October Anniversary Sunday. What a joy to
be able to visit with them! It was a long drive
from Florida where they live near Disney
World.
Giving Thanks | Pat Bell
The participants of the Festival Choir for
joining in the anthem, “At Calvary” during
the October Anniversary Sunday.
The members who picked their favorite
hymns on that special Sunday and sang like
the hymns were everyone’s favorites.
Pastor Dan & Darlene Quiram celebrate an
Anniversary Sunday with us during
November presenting the Word of God.
We are blessed to have them actively in-
volved at Calvary and frequent worshipers.
The violin music by Manfred Reek and flute
music by Amy Crumb on recent Sundays.
Just lovely!
The men from the Property Committee who
helped protect the safety of members and
visitors by painting the curbs yellow and the
parking spaces white on the parking lot.
The many people involved in making the
grounds of our church on the Northern
Parkway side look new. Staff from Bobby
Chapman’s school donated toward the work
of a horticulturist to trim and clean up the
bushes. Boy Scouts and parents from Troop
#247 assisted Jamie Fitch on his Eagle Scout
project by digging up old bushes, cutting
down a tree and replanting with pink and
white azaleas in memory of Jamie’s Mom,
Christine. What a gift to be enjoyed by so
many!

Calvary Lutheran Church & School
“A trip down memory
lane” was the
experience of many
people attending
worship on Sunday,
October 18th. It was a
joy to welcome Pastor
Roy and Ann Maack to
celebrate Calvary’s
100th Anniversary.
During the reception following the worship
service, Pastor and Anne reconnected with
everyone in a personal way. Their son
David and his wife Susan were present to
represent the four Maack children, all of
whom lived in Baltimore when Pastor
Maack served at Calvary. We count Pastor
and Anne as true blessings for the love and
friendship we experienced through their
ministry with us. Thank you, Pastor and
Ann!
November 8th will be a big day for
members and friends as the year-long
Anniversary celebration comes to a
conclusion. Pastor Dan Quiram is our
guest proclaimer for both the 8:15am and
11am worship services. We are privileged
to see Pastor Dan and his wife Darlene for
worship when schedules allow, and look
forward to Pastor Dan delivering God’s
Word for us that day. A light reception
will follow both services.
Also on November 8th, we’re pleased to
host the Baltimore Choral Arts Society in
concert at 3pm in Calvary’s sanctuary.
Celebrating their 50th Anniversary, we’re
honored the Choral Arts Society will be on
hand to close out our 100th Anniversary
celebration. The “Hallelujah Chorus” will
be one of the selections in the afternoon
performance. How very appropriate for
the Lord to hear this hymn of praise as we
give thanks for 100 years past and our
“mission and ministry” into the future!

UPDATE
Under the direction of Mr. Tom Hall, the
Choral Arts Society is a long-established
group in Baltimore and one which we are
extremely proud to host. Please plan to
attend. Spread the word to friends and
neighbors and help us show this special
guest we appreciate the gift of music they
provide in celebration of the innumerable
blessings Calvary has had for 100 years.
Upcoming Pastoral Vacancy: At the
congregation meeting held October 25, it
was voted on and decided Calvary will
pursue securing an Intentional Interim
Pastor, following Pastor Poulson’s
retirement. This is a call process, although
not as involved as that of calling a
permanent pastor. The congregation will
receive updates as the process for
securing an Intentional Interim Pastor
progresses
Financial: The balanced 2016 Budget
was passed.
Sunday Bible Study, 9:45am
Fellowship Hall
We have begun our 6-week study
of witnessing. As Lutherans, we
affirm that sharing our faith with
others is an integral part of our
Christian existence in this world.
This activity remains with us even as
the Church enlists certain
individuals for outreach projects
close to home or overseas. In this
study, we hope to encourage a broader
commitment to share the faith in Jesus
Christ in whatever callings the Lord has
placed you. On December 6, 2015, we
will begin our Advent Series – “He Shall
Come Again.” Don’t worry about missing
any prior studies; you are invited to
explore the true life-giving Word, every
Sunday!
Wednesday Lectionary Bible Study
7pm, Office Conference Room
Year B in the 3-Year Lectionary is coming
to an end and we are looking forward to
celebrating Advent and the rest of Year C
through the Gospel of Luke. As usual,
Advent begins with a look to the Cross
and the End Time, for this the reason Jesus
was born – to defeat once and for all sin,
death and the Devil and make us children
of God. See the story of the salvation of
all mankind unfold as we look into the Old
Testament for the promises of Christ
fulfilled on Christmas day.
You are invited to prepare for Sunday’s
Divine Service by studying the upcoming
readings at our weekly Lectionary Bible
Study held Wednesday!
Please contact Scott Jones, 410.828.9208,
with any questions on these opportunities.

The Southeastern District (SED) is your regional
Lutheran Church office supporting churches,
missions, and schools in Delaware, District of
Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, North and South Carolina. That's at least 3,878
zip codes, zip codes in cities, on the shore, in
the mountains and in between. The goal of this contest is to connect all theses neighborhoods
and see what it looks like.
Post a picture of what's gong on in your zip code onto Instagram at #sedlutheran

Since the last congregational meeting, the
Outreach Board has been diligently working
to increase the credibility of the
neighborhood’s view of Calvary congregation
by sharing simple meals, inviting neighbors,
those who partake in the Saturday Loaves
and Fishes at St. Matthias, and Calvary School
families. We have offered physical and
spiritual food five times since February with
increased participation from those outside
our parish doors. There has been supportive
involvement from Calvary members via
donations of time, food, and funds; set-up,
cooking, ministering to our guests, and clean-
ing up. Thanks to each and every one of
you who have in some way been involved in
this ministry! We see it as a very positive
influence in the Hamilton community.
The second way we have been reaching out is
with providing homework help through our
“Guiding Hand” sessions on Tuesday and
Wednesday afternoons. Last year, we
touched the lives of 19 children with the
average attendance of nine children per
session.
With the new school beginning in September,
2015, five new children were enrolled and we
have had an average attendance of 10
children per session. While two of our
helpers from last year could not return, we
have five new people participating as
helpers—two of them previously assisted at
Yorkwood Elementary where the after-
school homework program was discontinued.
One of the other new volunteers is from St.
Matthias and remaining two are from sister
LCMS congregations.
The Guiding Hand’s Mission Statement is:
Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me
and do not forbid them, for of such is the king-
dom of heaven.” The Guiding Hand will provide
an environment where caring, nurturing, and
trusting relationships can develop. We will give
each child the opportunity to grow in knowledge
and wisdom. Providing a safe place for working
on homework, physical activities, healthy snack,
building friendships, and increasing spiritual
growth for each child is OUR MISSION.
The Guiding Hand has been fortunate to
receive a grant of $500.00 from BGE and
$1500.00 from Rebecca’s Garden of Hope,
which has assisted us in purchasing two
computers and a printer for the increased

Calvary has a Prayer Ministry Team that
meets every Sunday during the Bible Study
hour praying for the needs of others and for
Calvary's renewal. All are invited to join them
for prayer any Sunday during the entire time
or any portion of the time they meet. Prayer
requests can also be given to the group leader,
Joan Colliflower, 410.426.3919.
"Standing in the Need of Prayer" written by Mo-
ses Hogan is a gospel hymn known by many.
We often find ourselves in need of intercesso-
ry prayer. Praying for others can put a spiritual
wall of protection around those requesting
prayer. Prayer is a ministry of the church that
uses this power God gave the church to call
upon him in times of need and times of praise
and thanksgiving.
Calvary's Prayer Circle has been using this
power of prayer for years. They are waiting for
your call!

The Power of Prayer | Pat Bell
We get so wrapped up
in dealing with the
problems and concerns
of the day, we overlook
the special gifts God is
constantly sharing with
us. Blessings may not be
seen through our “first
window”, but felt with
the closeness of friends,
the love of family, the
joy and humor remembered after interactions
with others.
We are thankful that God has been constantly
blessing Calvary, especially as we have seen so
many people involved and being touched
throughout this Anniversary year. He is
constantly directing us outside of ourselves
and our walls to share the love of Jesus and
His eternal blessings with others.
“But I will sing of your strength in the morning; I
will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my
refuge in times of trouble.” (Ps.59:16)
We pray each day, “Oh, give thanks unto the
Lord for He is good and His mercy endures
forever.” (Ps.106:1)
See you in Church!
Early each day, I look
out the window and
watch the morning
begin. Some mornings
the sky is dark, other
days streaky gray
clouds frame the
window, another day
the clouds are fat and
shining pink, one
morning golden lights
brighten up the dark blue sky. Three feet
away is another window, which remains
dark through all the changes at sunrise—
until later.
Sometimes God puts blessings close and
obvious for us to see; other times we
have to wait, to search, to look for them
in places we don’t expect.
The fall season is full of visual blessings
that even the poorest can experience—
the sugar maple leaves glow against the
blue sky, and some in the distance look
like they are on fire. The ground is
covered with acorns that quickly get
buried—what a blessing for wildlife now
and later! The lawn is no longer green,
but covered with dead pine needles and
leaves the wind blew down during the
night— muscles ache from raking, a
healthier body and mind later.

know when He would return in judgement, “Only
the Father knows”. (Matt 24:36).
One thing we do know is that change is
inevitable. As Calvary moves “Forward in Faith &
Mission”, our work of bringing the saving grace of
Jesus to those who do not know Him in the 21st
century will require us to change to spread God’s
Word.
The people of Calvary are a praying people. We
will continue to pray for guidance and be inspired
by the Holy Spirit to boldly proclaim His Word.
“If God be for us, who can be against us?” (Rom
8:31).
Who knows what Calvary will look like in anoth-
er 100 years? We need only remember these
words of assurance from Jesus, “Heaven and
earth will pass away, but my Words will never
pass away.” (Matt 24:35)
During the 20th century, Calvary celebrated its
25th, 50th and 75th Anniversaries in its mission
of Christian outreach to the Hamilton area.
For his shepherding of the Calvary
congregation for most of the 2nd half of the cen-
tury, we honor Rev. Roy Maack, who
together with his wife Ann and their family, faith-
fully served Calvary for 29 years from 1965-
1994—making him Calvary’s longest-tenured pas-
tor.
In 1970, Calvary’s voting members invited the
women of the congregation to join them as vot-
ers. Later in 1975, communicants 18 years of age
and older were granted voting rights. Finally, in
1981, all confirmed members were given the right
to vote on congregations
matters.
In 1999 at the dawning of the new millennium,
Calvary Lutheran School recognized its 50 years
of service in the community. Five years later,
Calvary congregation celebrated its 90th years of
spiritual service.
For this special occasion, the church produced a
video of the building of the present church and
premiered it at a congregational gathering. Using
an archival file, record made in 1960 by Calvary
members and cinematographers Irvin F. Kemp,
Sr., and son, Irvin F. Kemp, Jr., the film gives a
detailed visual account of the
building of the church and the people involved.
Over the years, the church has grown in its cam-
pus and building amenities, adding an elevator for
handicap accessibility and addition to the school
which houses classrooms and a library. Senior
and Associate Pastors continued to faithfully
serve Calvary, including George Sommermeyer,
1946-1961; Stephen Mazak, 1961-1964; Leslie
Weber, 1948-1964; Mel Knott, 1964-1978; Norb
Folwaczny, 1978-1985; Mark Hricko, 1986-1989;
Bob Kretzschmar, 1990-2012; Dan Quiram, 1997
-2008; and Quentin Poulson, 2013-present.
This chronicle history of 100 years of ministry at
Calvary Lutheran Church has attempted to show
the faith, resolve and perseverance of our
Christian founders to face the challenges and set-
back in establishing this Christian Mission in our
neighborhood. That tradition continues today as
Calvary faces new challenges in its next 100
years.
No one knows the future. Even Jesus in His
earthly incarnation told His disciples He did not

For 2.7 million children in the US, their
story is filled with the abandonment,
loneliness and shame that come from
having a mom or dad in prison. For many,
it may include following their parents down
the same destructive road to
incarceration.
Angel Tree®, a program of Prison
Fellowship, reaches out to the children of
prisoners and their families with the love of
Christ. This unique program gives you an
opportunity to share God's love by helping
to meet the physical, emotional, and
spiritual needs of the families of prisoners.
Calvary will once again be working with
this ministry during the upcoming
Christmas season in sponsoring 30
children. Cost of sponsoring a child is still
only $35.

“Cross Connect” - Special Events Calendar
24th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
(8 November)
1 Kings 17:8–16; Hebrews 9:24–28; Mark 12:38–44
The Lord Freely Feeds and Provides for Us with Eve-
rything He Has
Those who contribute “large sums” from “out of their
abundance” have done very little. They cannot purchase
God’s favor with their money. But the “poor widow” with
her two small coins, who “out of her poverty has put in
everything she had,” entrusts herself and her life to the
mercy of God (Mark 12:41–44). Such faith is not disap-
pointed, for the Lord is faithful, and He provides for His
people by His grace. Thus was the poor widow of Za-
rephath able to feed the prophet Elijah “for many
days,” as well as herself and her household, “according to
the word of the LORD that he spoke by Elijah” (1
Kings 17:15–16). He feeds us, too, by His Word, not
only with daily bread for this body and life, but unto the
life everlasting in Christ Jesus. “By the sacrifice of him-
self,” by the giving of His body and life and all that He
had, He has entered “into heaven itself, now to appear in
the presence of God on our behalf” (Heb. 9:24–26). He is
our great High Priest and the Temple of God, as well as
the priestly food with which He feeds us.
25th SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST
(15 November)
Daniel 12:1–3; Hebrews 10:11–25; Mark 13:1–13
The Crucified and Risen Body of Christ Jesus Is the
True Temple of God
Despite its “wonderful stones” and “great buildings,” the
Jerusalem temple would be torn down, with not one
stone left upon another, just as this present world and
its kingdoms will come to an end (Mark 13:1–8). But
that temple pointed beyond itself to Christ, to His sacri-
fice upon the cross and to the resurrection of His body
as the true Temple of God. In the midst of sin and
death, by the proclamation of the Gospel, He now gath-
ers disciples into His body, wherein “the one who en-
dures to the end will be saved” (Mark 13:10–13). For He
is “a great priest over the house of God,” who “will remem-
ber their sins and their lawless deeds no more.” By the pure
water of His Baptism, they “draw near with a true heart in
full assurance of faith,” and by His flesh and blood, they
enter the Holy of Holies (Heb. 10:17–22). Thus are His
people delivered, “everyone whose name shall be found
written in the book.” For by the wisdom of His Gospel,
He turns “many to righteousness,” so that “many of those
who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake” to everlast-
ing life (Dan. 12:1–3).

LAST SUNDAY OF THE CHURCH YEAR (22 November) Isaiah 51:4–6 or Daniel 7:9–10, 13–14; Jude 20–25 or Revelation 1:4b–8; Mark 13:24–37 or John 18:33–37 In Repentance We Are Alert to the Coming of Christ The signs of the end are all around us, constant reminders that “heaven and earth will pass away.” But all of these signs are centered in the cross of Christ, whereby He has conquered sin and death, that we might be raised with Him in righteous-ness through His Word of the Gospel, which “will not pass away” (Mark 13:31). He is “the firstborn of the dead,” who in His great love “has freed us from our sins by his blood” (Rev. 1:5). His salvation is certain because “his dominion is an everlast-ing dominion” and His kingdom “shall not be destroyed” (Dan. 7:14). For this pur-pose He came into the world, to reign in love through His voice of the Gospel, which is the truth (John 18:37). So is the righteousness of Christ “a light to the peoples,” which “will never be dismayed” because it is the justice of His cross and resurrection (Is. 51:4–6). As He “is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory,” so wait upon "the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life” (Jude 20–24). THANKSGIVING DAY (26 November) Deuteronomy 8:1–10; Philippians 4:6–20 or 1 Timothy 2:1–4; Luke 17:11–19 We Praise God for Sustaining Life in and through His Word The nation resounds with thanksgiving for the earth’s bountiful harvest, crops of wheat and grains, all beneath the canopy of God’s almighty care. But “man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD” (Deut. 8:1–10). The Church is the vessel through which the Word of God penetrates the world with its Law and Gospel. It is this divine Word that proclaims Jesus as the sole source of life, health and wholeness. It is Jesus who heals lepers with His Word: “Go and show yourselves to the priests” (Luke 17:11–19). Of the 10 cleansed, only one expresses thanksgiving back to Jesus. But true gratitude proceeds from a heart sustained by faith. Jesus bids this one Samaritan to “rise and go your way; your faith has made you well. "So also, we are sent from the Divine Service, bolstered in our faith by baptismal and Eucharist blessings to be thankful in our circumstances of plenty and hunger, abundance and need (Phil. 4:6–20). FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT (29 November) Jeremiah 33:14–16; 1 Thessalonians 3:9–13; Luke 19:28–40 or Luke 21:25–36 The Lord Jesus Comes in Humility to Redeem Us The season of Advent focuses on the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and this first Sunday establishes this theme for the rest of the season. The Son of God came long ago to be our Savior, “a righteous Branch” descended from David (Jer. 33:15). As He then came into Jerusalem, riding on a lowly donkey to sacrifice Himself for the sins of the world (Luke 19:28-40), so does He come to His Church today in the humility of Word and Sacrament to deliver the fruits of His Passion: the forgiveness of sins and eternal life. He absolves us and establishes our hearts “blameless in holiness before our God and Father”(1 Thess. 3:13). The same Lord Jesus, who came to Jerusalem then and who comes to us now in peace, will come again with power and great glory on the Last Day. Then there will be “distress of nations in perplexity,” with “people fainting in fear.” Yet, as we anticipate that great and terrible day, He bids us to rest securely in Him: “Raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near” (Luke 21:25, 26, 28).

COMMUNITY NEWS PRAYERS FOR THE CHURCH: Petition for the Day of St. Luke the Evange-list, St. Paul referred to as “the beloved Physician.” On this day, it would be appropriate
in conjunction with the congregation’s prayers to recognize the health-care workers in the congregation and to pray God’s richest blessing upon their service: Let us pray. As
we remember the life and ministry of Your servant, Luke, the evangelist and phy-sician of both body and soul, we thank You for the blessing that his writings have
been to Your people. We rejoice in how they proclaim Your healing power. Grant that all who serve in health care among us may be Your instruments of well-being, healing and restoration. Sustain
them in the challenges, pressures and dangers under which they labor. We ask this through Him in whom we find our final healing of body and soul, even Jesus Christ, who is the Resurrection and the Life. Amen.

CITY’S FALL LEAF COLLECTION PROGRAM: begins October 19. Autumn has arrived and so have the falling
leaves. Today, Baltimore City Department of Public Works Director Rudolph S. Chow, P.E., urged city residents to keep their curbs, alleys, and storm drains clear of leaves to prevent the potential for flooding. “DPW has implemented citywide
street sweeping, and does alley sweeping in several neighborhoods. Still, that is not enough to keep falling leaves from clog-ging the thousands of storm drain inlets throughout the City, particularly in heavily wooded areas,” Director Chow said.
Leaf collection season begins Monday, October 19, and will continue through Monday, January 4, 2016. The Department of
Public Works Bureau of Solid Waste will collect bagged leaves every Monday throughout the season. Solid Waste crews will collect leaves by appointment; up to 20 bags of
leaves will be collected from each address every Monday. However, residents must call 311 before 6 p.m. on Sunday
to schedule a collection for the following Monday. Citizens may make multiple appointments for up to two months pri-
or to the pick-up date.
The Bureau of Solid Waste will also continue to collect bagged leaves on the regularly scheduled trash collection
day. Solid Waste crews will collect up to 5 bags of leaves from each address every week. Residents need to put
leaves in clear or labeled bags and place them at their regu-lar mixed refuse collection location and not in the public
right-of-way. Altogether, with Monday collections and regu-lar mixed refuse collections, the DPW will collect, in total,
up to 25 bags of leaves per week, per residence. As a reminder, residents can also drop off bagged leaves at
one of the five Citizen Convenience locations:
Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.: Quarantine Road Sanitary Landfill – 6100 Quarantine Road
Western Citizens’ Convenience Center- 701Reedbird Ave Eastern Citizens’ Convenience Center- 6101 Bowleys Lane
Northwest Citizens’ Convenience Center - 2840 Sisson St
Monday through Saturday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Northwest Transfer Station – 5030 Reisterstown Road

lic sidewalks and to apply for shoveling jobs for next winter, please call 311 or [email protected]. The City is currently taking applications: (1) from residents 65 and older or with disabilities who need help clearing snow and request
to have their public sidewalks regularly shoveled for free this coming winter; and, (2) from youth ages 14-21 who are apply-ing for City paid jobs to do this senior citizen snow shoveling all next winter. For this snow shoveling program, eligible
households and the youth providing services will be recruited from the same quadrants of the City. That way, youths will ideally be neighbors who are able to walk to their assignments in the snow and become well known to the elderly and disa-
