From Dales Desk A Call from the Catacombs

This Sunday, March 1, I will begin a sermon series entitled, A Call from the Catacombs. I will talk more about the title during the sermon and in the sermons throughout. But for now, let me simply say that this is a dramatic and I believe accessible way to understand what the author of the Gospel of Mark is seeking to convey to his first readers and in turn to us. Sermons in the series include: March 1 Make Straight His Paths Euthus! March 8 The Power to Choose March 15 Good Soil Will Grow Almost Anything March 22 Time to Wake Up Jesus March 29 Choir Cantata April 5 Easter Sunday Afraid I look forward to sharing the Lenten season with you as we experience Marks Call from the Catacombs. A Lesson from the Lanes Last Sunday, I had the opportunity to go bowling with eight Christian friends from San Diego. A fun time was had by all. But while we all did better the second game, none of us will be joining the pro bowling tour any time soon. Well, I should say none of us except for the 5-year-old and the 2-year-old who showed up the grownups on a number of occasions. Who had the high score for the day? Well, I did. But more importantly, I got the high score without ever touching a bowling ball. Let me explain. With my ongoing neck and back problems, it only took a couple of frames to realize that even my two-handed, bent-over and between-the-legs technique was not going to be a good idea. So, my first game was bowled mainly by the children. Like I said before, they did well. The second game, however, I used a number of bowlers. In fact, everyone got to throw at least one frame of my game. So while the name on the scoreboard said, Dale, it was really the whole group who took turns bowling. And yes, it was the high score for the day. As I watched the score climb last Sunday afternoon, I became more and more aware of how this team technique was a good metaphor for life and for the church. On the one hand, it made no sense. These were still the same bowlers. They still had the same strengths and weaknesses. There was no mathematical formula that could have predicted this outcome. On the other hand, this is how life works. Working alone, we always do our best at any moment with the skills and the information we have at the time. But when we pool our resources, we always have the opportunity to do better. We bring more skills and more information to bear upon the situation at hand. This improves our thinking, our decision-making and our ability to enact those decisions.

  • 3

Once more, in the church (not so much in bowling) , God enters into the equation. Yes, we have more skills and information, but we also have more Christian intension and spirit to bring to the situation. This improves our prayer, our discipleship and our ability for spirit-filled worship, faith-building community and passion-powered service. Jesus put it this way: For where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them. Matthew 18:20 Blessings,

Ecumenical Prayer Service Christ Cathedral, Garden Grove

    7:30 PM, March 3

Rev. Suggs will be participating in an Ecumenical Prayer Service in Solidarity with Persecuted Christians on this coming Tuesday, March 3, from 7:30 to 8:30 PM. This event has been planned for months; but in light of the recent tragedy which resulted in the death of 21 Coptic Christians, it is urgent and fitting that Christians come together to pray in support of our brothers and sisters in the faith who are being persecuted for their faith around the world. The flier about the event reads: Currently Christians of various denominations are being persecuted in many different parts of the world for their faith. As Christians, we are called to aid those in need, especially our brothers and sisters in the faith, by prayers, acts of charity, and works of justice. This years annual Diocese of Orange Ecumenical Prayer Service for Christian Unity is focused on bringing attention to the plight of Christians being persecuted for their faith throughout the world, and to show our support and solidarity with them in prayer. We believe that it is important that Christians of all denominations come together to pray for our suffering brothers and sisters, as we continue to work towards building Christian unity and fulfilling the prayer of Jesus that they all may be one (Jn 17:21.) The event will be held in the Arboretum of Christ Cathedral (formerly the Crystal Cathedral) in Garden Grove. A reception will follow. All are invited.

I do not mind if you use the phone, the computer on the credenza as a guest or even use my scissors, scotch tape, stapler, etc. Please do not TAKE the items away from the office. My stapler is missing again. (I have had to replace it at least five times.) Also someone spilled on the desk and did not clean it up leaving stains on the desktop. We have chosen t o partner with the Disciples of Christ Coffee Project, a partnership between Week of Compassion, Disciples Home Missions and Equal Exchange, a worker-owned co-operative offering 100% fairly traded coffee, chocolate, tea and foods. So stop by before or after church, sample the coffee or you may always drop by the office during the week and purchase any of the products. Summer Camp is Coming! MISSION TRIP TAKING SHAPE The 2015 Mission Trip to Loveland, Colorado, set for June 7-

13, is taking shape. Following a brief meeting after worship last Sunday, these people are going to be part of the group going to Loveland: Tom Beck, Claire Keech, Nancy Knott, David and Amy Styffe and Craig Wallace. We understand that both Sherry Herrera and Masumi Hogan are considering joining this group, but neither of them was able to attend the meeting this past Sunday. Packets about the trip, including the Liability Forms and the Skills Assessment Forms, were distributed to those who were present. The completed forms are to be returned to the Church Office and placed in the Outreach Ministry box on, or before, Sunday, April 12, the Sunday after Easter. In addition, each person going to Loveland is asked to pay a $75 registration fee by that date. Checks should be made payable to the church. Well send in one check to cover our group on Monday, April 13th. Craig Wallace reported that the air fare, available now, is $184 on Southwest for the round trip to and from Denver. Persons interested in flying need to speak to Craig so that tickets can be bought fairly soon to get this fare. A vehicle will need to be rented for the week and funds will be needed for food. Sleeping accommodations, at no cost to those going to Loveland, will be provided by the host church, First Christian Church, Loveland. No later than its April meeting, the Outreach Ministry will determine the amount it will provide for each person going on the Mission Trip, using the resources in our Disciples Volunteering Fund which were augmented by $1,000 from the Alternative Gift Faire held last November. We have reserved 10 spots for our congregation for this week in Loveland, so we have room for more participants. How about YOU? The Outreach Ministry

We Almost Made It! With gifts totaling $751.52 received this past Sunday, our Week of Compassion Offering for 2015 totaled $1,686.52, just $73.42 shy of our $1,750.00 goal. Of the funds received on Sunday, Luanne Bailey, Financial Secretary, reports that $9.51 of the total received came from the coin boxes turned in by our children. We are proud of the children for sharing these funds. If you didnt get a chance to give

to the Week of Compassion offering so far, well accept your gift on Sunday, obviously. If your son or daughter has a box of coins he/shes been collecting, but forgot to bring in on February 22nd, they may bring it this coming Sunday, March 1st. All gifts for the Week of Compassion will be welcome. Use the special Week of Compassion envelope and/or write Week of Compassion on your check. Thank you! Finally, we are most grateful to every one for their generous support of the 2015 Week of Compassion Offering. Our gifts will make a difference in the lives of people well never know, but who will know that thousands of people in Disciples congregations across the US and Canada, including us, cared enough about them and their needs to share from their abundance! Ed Linberg, Chair, World Outreach Ministry REVIEW OF FEBRUARY OUTREACH MINISTRY MEETING During their meeting on February 18, the members of the Outreach Ministry discussed and acted upon these items of business. 1. Reviewed the calendar of events/projects and special offerings planned for 2015, including confirming assignments for the coordination of each of them 2. Got an updated report on the Souper Bowl of Caring project held on February 1. A total of $337 was collected along with 122 cans of food. The funds and the food went to Pathways of Hope. 3. Learned that members of Casa de Oracin would be in Tijuana on the weekend of February 20-22 to support a retreat of the Disciples congregation there. They will talk with the Pastor of this congregation about a possible one-day work project that we, in partnership is Casa de Oracin might do for that church sometime after Easter. 4. Heard reports on acquiring a new barbecue unit for the 2015 Tri-Tip Project. That project will begin on Thursday, April 9. An organizational meeting for the 2015 Tri-Tip Project was set for Sunday, March 8 following the 10:15 A.M. worship service. 5. Reviewed plans for the 2015 Founders Day event at Chapman University, March 13 and 14, which is being coordinated by Nancy Malotte, with help from Cambria Findley-Grubb. 6. Briefly reviewed plans for the 2015 Offering of Letters which will be focused on legislation regarding childhood hunger. Cambria Findley-Grubb has the packet for planning this event and will bring a proposal about a date for this activity to our March meeting. 7. Learned that 11 of our members attended Homelessness 101 on February 7. This activity is open to any person from our congregation who is interested in going. Details about it can be found elsewhere in this issue of The Caller." 8. Got a preliminary report about the 2015 CROP Hunger Walk for which Phil Forbes and Randy Langston will be our representatives. We have $500 in funds received at the Alternative Gift Faire last November to cover the cost of our being Sponsors for the 2015 CROP Hunger Walk. We have since learned that this event is set for Sunday, April 26th. Be sure to put this date in your calendar and watch for more information in the weeks ahead. 9. Learned that our 2015 Week of Compassion Offering stood at $935 with gifts received through Sunday, February 15th. 10. Discussed the plans for the Loveland Colorado Mission Trip organizational meeting set for February 22nd. 11. Set a goal of $1,360 for the 2015 Easter Offering to be received on March 29 and April 5, i.e. Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday respectively. This offering benefits the General Units of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), including Global Ministries and Homeland Ministries. 12. Discussed the continuing project of selling coffee, cocoa and chocolate products each Sunday as part of the Equal Exchange Program. 13. Discussed the work of the Society of St. Andrew, an organization sponsoring and fostering gleaning to help feed hungry people. It is now affiliated with us Disciples through the Week of Compassion. Our discussion included the fact that it might be possible for us to do a one-day gleaning project at a farm located in the Pacific Southwest Region. The Society of St. Andrew provides guidelines for organizing such a project. They also sponsor one-week work projects around the country for those interested in gleaning during the summer months. Information about this opportunity will be acquired prior to our March 17th meeting. 14. Acknowledged Craig Wallaces work in arranging a Work Day for our congregation on February 7th at the La Habra Habitat for Humanity project in which 7 of our members participated.
