After a pretty lousy summer - bothworkwise AND weatherwise - wenow come to the month where it allchanges; ie the clocks go back anhour on 28th of this month and itwill get dark even earlier! Evenworse, I ‘celebrate’ yet anotherbirthday this month! Ah well, atleast it’s getting busier! Onwardsand upwards!Taxi sales war?At the same time as KPM long-time Chairman,Peter DaCosta stands down from his positionwith Eco Vehicles and its Vito taxi to become anon-executive director and take a well-deservedrest after many years, along with Tim Yeo MPwho apparently subsidises his money as an MPby becoming a director of every ‘Green’ compa-ny he can find, I cannot help but worry aboutwhat looks to be a price war between the Vitoand the TX4. Some will say that any price war is good

news for drivers, and indeed it can be. Butonly if the companies concerned can afforda war.The Mercedes Benz team began by introduc-

ing its Agility scheme where you could ‘buy’ abrand new Vito for £135 per week. Added to theusual stuff that owners have to pay for, it stillmade a new cab affordable – especially withmany driver’s taxis coming off the road courtesyof the Mayor’s clean air policy, where any taxiover 15 years of age suddenly became uncleanand where drivers had no deposit for a new cabto speak of. With the Vito scheme, you paid the equivalent

of £135 a week and then after three years, youcould buy the vehicle – with a huge amount stilloutstanding as the payments made just a smallinroad into the price. Failing that, you couldjust give it back and get another new one. Inother words, you are renting but paying all thecosts that owner-drivers pay. However, you havea vehicle whose servicing costs should be per-manently under warrantee.Several months ago, the London Taxi

Company came on with a similar scheme at thesame weekly cost of £135 plus all the usualowner-driver costs. The advantage of the TX4scheme was that the initial cost was £thousandsless, so you would owe substantially less afterthe three years were up. But now KPM have cut the weekly cost from

£135 to £125, making it look even more attrac-tive. But of course, nothing is for nothing andafter three years you will owe even more, havingnowhere near even paid half off of the hugelyexpensive Vito cost with many drivers beingunable to afford the cost.Will the LTC follow again? And if they do,

where will it all end? Garages won’t bother buy-ing new taxis to rent out as the ‘buy’ schemeswill look to be cheaper. And if the cost of cabsincreases, how many drivers will still buy new?And what will happen when the Nissan NV200arrives on the scene. Yes, it’s ugly but it has aneven lower price than the TX4? Where will thatleave the Vito and its £43,000 price? Will theythen cut the weekly cost to £100?Yes, price wars can be great, but in this case it

could also be disastrous...

Fooling the world!Do you know Dial-a-Cab driver John Gerber(N62)? How about Sky Sports, you must knowthat? And if you do, then you will certainly knowTottenham Hotspur! But what do the threehave in common? Well the answer is that John not only fooled

the Sky Sports News channel and Spurs, but heand his son fooled much of the world that takesSky’s content. Yet it started as a little joke thateventually took over the internet as Spurs fansgradually realised what John had done using histaxi and DaC name board. The story is inside thisissue...

KupkakeIf you work on DaC’s EC5 rank, then thechances are that you will hear Call Sign’s long-time poet, David ‘Kupkake’ Kupler (Y74)moaning about something or other. He has alsobeen writing for both this magazine and its pre-decessor, Phil Emden’s News and Views since1974 and even his poems usually have a moanabout something running through them! Yetthey - and he - remain incredibly popular. Sadly, David recently lost his mother, Mary.

She used to work for ODRTS on the phones atShirland Road. Indeed his daughter Rachelworked for DaC at Brunswick House, except thatbeing ‘on the phones’ had been elevated to tele-phonist by then and later on to calltaker. Hiswife Jan did a similar job at Shirland Road andhis sister Sam had previously been married toformer DaC Secretary John Bernardout. To com-plete an astonishing DaC family, David’s fatherJudd was also a regular on the old FinsburySquare rank, but sadly passed away in 2005. Just as he did back then for his dad, David has

written a poignant piece inside this issue abouta mother whom he obviously loved very much.Our sincere condolences to all David’s family ontheir loss...

Alpha Power PillI recently sent off for a pack of Alpha PowerPills and sure enough, they arrived the very nextmorning. And it was nice to see that they workas well as ever – smoke down and fuel con-sumption improved. Steve Vale, who is operat-ing the system, tells me that all orders receivedbefore 3pm go out first class post that same day. Technology passed me by when DVD players

took over from tape recorders, but apparently ifyou go to the Alpha Pill ad inside this issue, youwill see the website address (non-PC drivers can

still phone) where you log onto, but you willalso see a QR code (a pretty pattern to me), butif you have a smartphone you will be able to scanthe website in just by putting the phone next tothe pretty pattern!I’ll have to ask my grandson how that works,

after all, Samuel is nine now and should be ableto explain it to me! All I can tell you is that theAlpha Pill works!

DaC and charityFor many years, Dial-a-Cab drivers and Boardmembers have been intrinsically linked to vari-ous charities – most of which are involved withthe taxi trade. The London Taxidrivers’ Fundfor Underprivileged Children has and still hasDaC drivers on its committee. Board memberMike Son has been on it for many years, as haveDavid Lessman (D19), Gerry Dunn MBE(S84), Bill Tyzack BEM (C06) and many othersgoing back to Jack Taylor and Sam Harris. Then there’s the Taxi Driver of the Year

Charity Fund under the Chairmanship ofRussell Poluck MBE (T55), the WorshipfulCompany of Hackney Carriage Drivers’Magical Mystery Tour committee including dri-vers such as Jim Rainbird (T25) and Phil Davis(F10) and the East London Cabbies Outingcharity with DaC men such as John Dixon(B67). The Albany Taxi Charity has had manyDaC drivers working for it over the years, as hasthe LTBAFWD, better known as the Taxi WarDisabled Charity under their President and for-mer ODRTS Board member, 88 year old HarryJoel.Why have I mentioned all the above? Well they

all publish occasional articles in the trade pressand some drivers just turn over the page whenthey see one of them. But these guys representour trade in a way that should make us all proudand even if you don’t want to read the same arti-cle as it makes its way through the papers in apress release, please at least read it once. Noteverything in life can be sensationalistic; somepeople do things because no one else will. Andthey should make us feel proud of being Londontaxi drivers...

Max BygravesAt a time when taxi work has seen better days, Ifeel I should mention the times when thingswere really buzzing and one of those regularclients at the time was Max Bygraves. He usedto call Dial-a-Cab for taxis to pick him up fromhis luxury apartment in Palace Street,Westminster. Whilst he used to go everywhere ina cab, he was very fussy that it always turned upon time although he was always the nicest pos-sible celeb you could pick up.I remember the late Len Bell (ex-L01) telling

me how Max asked to be taken to Brighton afterphoning to ask for a taxi to Victoria. He told Lenthat he was just testing DaC to see whether theywould arrive on time to take someone justround the corner! When Len arrived within five minutes, Max

asked him to take him to the coastal towninstead. He also gave Len two tickets for hisLondon show. A true gent and one who is sadlymissed...

Olympics – just onemore time...My Call Sign report last month was - perhapsunsurprisingly - almost entirely devoted to theOlympic Games. Now they are over, I just havea little more to convey on the subject.There is not any doubt that both the

Olympics and Paralympics were a huge successand I, like many others, became quite involvedin watching some of the events. What withBradley Wiggins winning Gold and also theTour de France and then Andy Murray win-ning Gold and the New York Grand Slamevent, becoming the first Briton to do so forseventy six years, it really was a fantastic sum-mer for our sportsmen and women and ofcourse, the nation as a whole.However, not every cloud has a silver lining

and there were many businesses in and aroundthe capital that suffered tremendously duringthe six week period that the Games were on.The London Taxi trade was no exception withprobably the quietest August the trade has everseen, due in no short measure to the authori-ties persuading most people to avoid Londonunless their visit was absolutely vital. Itappeared that everyone heeded the advice andas a consequence the taxi trade did not haveany passengers to convey! I don’t need to tell you that the past year has

been a very difficult trading period and I wassomewhat pleased when your Society enteredAugust, the last month of Dial-a-Cab’s tradingyear, showing a small surplus. However, due tothose abysmal trading conditions duringAugust and the unusually high loss we experi-enced that month thanks to the Olympics, wefinished the year in the red and not showing asurplus. Fortunately, the loss incurred will nothave a detrimental effect on your Society as wehave built up considerable financial strengthover the years. I am just pleased that theLondon taxi trade will hopefully not experi-ence in our lifetime another huge downturn inbusiness like the one we experienced duringAugust.

House ofCommons/LordsWe have serviced the above account for manyyears, with the exception of some five years agowhen we lost the account on price to one ofour competitors in the radio taxi industry.Their contract was for three years, but after fif-teen months the House called me in and askedif would service the account once again. Thiswas due to service issues, as the account is verycomplex and the new provider experiencedsome difficulty in providing a satisfactory ser-vice.Consequently, we once again began to ser-

vice the House. They then sought to go to ten-der earlier this year. The staff that had previ-ously awarded the contract back to us due toour competitors inability to service them to anacceptable level, had all moved on and wewere faced with new staff that were unaware ofthe difficulties that were experienced in servicelevels those few years earlier.

Although I had explained the situation tothem, they had never actually experienceda situation themselves when service fails onall fronts.We tendered for the business on exactly the

same terms as the current contract; however,the new contract was not awarded to us but toa company based in Finchley. The new compa-ny that has won the tender is Fairway andKenwood, a minicab company that claims tohave 250 cars. The current contract with usexpires at the end of October.However, I have now received another

communication from the House to request wecontinue to service them into Novemberwhilst the new supplier beds their new sys-tem in. Of course I agreed to their requestand I know you will continue to service theHouse to the very highest standard until thecontract finally expires. I believe that the way in which a contract

is terminated is extremely important. Itshould always expire on amicable terms asyou never know what the future holds. After-all, just like last time we could be invited toservice this account again in the future.

App for credit cardsWe are currently testing an App for the iPhoneand Android, however we are only testing itfor credit card transactions to begin with andwhen we are happy with that Application, wewill extend the service to other areas of yourbusiness.At the moment, the App appears to be work-

ing very well and when we are ready to launchit, the charges applied to current credit cardtransactions will be revised.When we are happy with everything and the

App has been thoroughly tested, we will thensubmit it to Apple for their approval and forinclusion in their App store.At that point, everything will depend on you.

If you don’t cover the work, then the publicwill delete the App and we will suddenly seederogatory remarks written about us on theinternet because that is how many show theirdiscontent with Apps nowadays.We can produce the App, but the service we

give will be entirely up to you. We could evenmake all credit card transactions As Directedjust to try and guarantee a good service, but asI’ve said, if you don’t cover the work then wemight as well give it up now...

Peter DaCosta stepping down as ECO CEOKPM Chairman and Eco City VehiclesChief Executive Officer, Peter DaCosta,has said that he is stepping downfrom his position with ECO. He willremain as a non-executive director.Tim Yeo, who has chaired the company

behind the Mercedes Vito since its 2007 admis-sion into the AIM market, is also standing down,to be replaced by former Sky and BT executive,John Swingewood.The company have had a relatively successful

period since their lease/buy deal for the Vito,claiming to have increased its share of the newLondon license taxi market to 36% this year.How successful that will remain to be now thatthe London Taxi Company has launched a simi-lar deal for their TX4 but at that cab’s lowerprice, remains to be seen.The changes to the ECV Board was said to be

in preparation for the next phase of develop-ment. It comes after ECV raised £1.75m in ashare placement, which will help to reduce theirdebt and provide working capital.

Those debts include £1.5 million (plusaccrued interest of £66,120 as at 31 August2012) owed to the pension scheme (whosebeneficiaries are the original KPM directors andnow ECV directors and/or shareholders, PeterDaCosta, Michael Troullis and Keith Marder).Also owed to the pension scheme are accruedrent arrears of around £200,000 relating topremises owned by the pension scheme. Thereare outstanding arrears of £514,000 owed toGlobal Meter Systems Limited, £61,000 owedto the executive directors in respect of loansthey made to the Company, £126,000 indeferred gross bonuses owed to the executivedirectors together with employer nationalinsurance contributions, £97,500 in deferredfees owed to non-executive directors, £100,000owed to Peter DaCosta’s son Lee and £250,000accrued interest owing to Cabvision NetworksLimited.Revised repayment terms have now been

agreed, pursuant to which £0.25 millionincluding associated expenses will be paid outof the Placing proceeds.

I very often stop for a rest at the RAF churchrank on the Strand; there are normally a fewvagrants who sit outside the church and who attimes can be a bit rowdy, but who seldom causeany bother.When I was there recently, I saw one vagrant

who I didn’t recognise walking along the line oftaxis and looking into each one as he passed, soI promptly shut my window only to see him passby and get into the taxi behind! The cab – not aDial-a-Cab – then pulled away! So on the back of that experience, and as the

thorny subject of dress code has resurfaced inrecent issues of Call Sign, I decided to conductmy own very unscientific mini-survey with thepeople that we couldn’t survive without – ie thegeneral public as taxi passengers.All ten passengers that took part were

male, wearing suits and the questionsreferred to male taxi drivers and their gen-eral dressware...

* All ten passengers agreed that a collar andtie was unnecessary, with eight out of the tensaying that a T-shirt was fine. * All ten called sleeveless vests “totally unac-

ceptable.”* Two of the ten thought there was a small ele-

ment of scruffy drivers in the trade.

I then asked about a dress code if radio dri-vers had to go into client’s office receptionareas.

* Five out of the ten thought a T-shirt was fine.* Five out of the ten said that a collared T-shirt

as a minimum should be worn.* Four of the ten said that jeans were okay,

whereas the other six said that trousers or casu-al slacks should be a minimum standard.* All ten said that shorts or track suit bottoms

were unsuitable.* None of the ten seemed particularly con-

cerned about footwear.

So there you have it and make of it what youwill! It has to be said that wearing a suit and tieis an extremely easy way of dressing, with anyadjustments necessary to the suit being madebefore you take it home. The only serious dailychallenge after that is choosing a tie!Once you move into casual wear, it becomes a

completely different ball game and the outletsdo not make it easy with a medium size being aperfect fit in one outlet, while other shopsdescribe that same size as an extra-large! Solabels cannot be relied on and if you end upwith an ill-fitting garment, you can take it back,use it for doing messy jobs, use it as a duster, justbin it or maybe – just maybe – consider that itwill make do behind the taxi wheel!

Allen Togwell hasbeen banging on about adress code for more yearsthan I can remember – acampaign I totally agreewith. However, it doesnot help his cause if everyarticle he writes on thesubject was not next to a

photo showing him suited and booted. Perhapsit would be better if he showed himself in amore casual light and in an outfit he would con-sider wearing behind the wheel. Allen currently gives the impression that he

would even do the gardening in a three piecesuit, goes to bed in a shirt and tie and justwouldn’t dare leaving the house in a pair ofsocks that hadn’t been correctly ironed –although I’m sure none of the above is true!On a more serious note, we are up against

very serious competition in top of the range carsthat are driven by smartly dressed drivers. Theironly disadvantage being that many don’t knowwhere they are going! So I would hate to thinkthat we were losing work purely due to the lackof any dress code or that was contributing to it...

Carshalton’s Danny ‘Cassius’ Connor put on agreat display recently to capture the SouthernArea title belt in the biggest fight of his careerand his fourth consecutive win. Referee KenCurtis gave him the decision after the 10 roundsin the title fight, which was shown live on SkySports in Matchroom Sports ‘London Calling’show at Alexandra Palace. Trained by Dial-a-Cab driver Alec Wilkey

(W83) under Johnny Eames managership atthe TKO Gym in Canning Town, Cassiustook on local favourite Chris ‘The Flash’Evangelou in the Light-Welterweight divi-sion in an entertaining battle that had thecrowd on their feet!The styles of both fighters made it a close and

interesting fight with Connor maintaining ahigh work rate and using his jab and combina-tions throughout against the previously unbeat-en Evangelou, who counterpunched usingpowerful single shots. Connor was coming offthe back of a great points win over TylerGoodjohn for the Masters Welterweight titleback in May and was in great form after winning6 of his last 7 bouts. But Evangelou was clearlyconfident after remaining unbeaten in winninghis first 9 bouts. While Danny trained with Alecat the TKO Gym, Evangelou had been to train atFloyd Mayweather’s famous gym in Las Vegas!Both fighters had great support and it was

evident this was going to be a tight affair afterthe first round in which both fighters had theirsuccesses, with Connor establishing his jabearly and landing a couple of straight righthands and Evangelou landing a good left hookand loading up for the power punches. The sec-ond round was also tight with Connor puttingpressure on his opponent and landing somegood combinations, but Evangelou, with hishands low, was relying on power and continuedto land with those single shots.Then in the third round, Evangelou looked

to have made a breakthrough when he caughtand stunned Cassius with a great left hook, buthe was able to regain his composure and beganfiring back with shots of his own. The styles ofboth fighters gelled, with the counterpunchingof Evangelou mixed with the work rate andcombinations of Danny Connor.The fifth round saw Chris Evangelou contin-

ue his tactics of explosive attacks, but Cassiusresponded with several shots each time he wascaught, showing the tenacity needed to becomea champion. But by round seven, Evangelouwas beginning to show signs of tiring, as thiswas his first time beyond 6 rounds. Connor,who had Pinto printed on the front of his shortsin memory of his friend and fellow boxer LewisPinto who died earlier this year, worked thebody with some hooks and continued the pres-sure while beginning to control the fightbehind his jab. Towards the end of the round,both fighters kept the crowd entertained withsome brief simultaneous foot shuffling beforetrading blows once again. The eighth sawEvangelou catch Cassius with an eye catchingthree--punch combination but the Carshaltonman came back with his own flurry of punchesbefore switching the attack to the body with hisown right hook. In the last 2 rounds, Connor looked the

stronger, landing right hands more frequentlyas Evangelou’s hooks failed to find the targetwith any regularity. Danny’s volume of punchesoverwhelmed The Flash as he tried to take themon his gloves. Both fighters showed determina-

tion as they squared up at the end of the ninthand the last round had the crowd on their feet,with Connor again showing he had the fitnessto outwork his opponent with some effectivestraight shots as Evangelou tried to cover up.At the end of the bout, Danny Connor’s hand

was raised in victory with the ref scoring thebout 98-94 in his favour and he was crownedSouthern Area Champion. Such was theexcitement of the fight and the attitudes of thetwo boxers, that there were calls for a rematchand if it materialises, it will surely be another

treat for the fight fans.Danny Connor told Call Sign: “I’m very

happy with that. All credit to Chris; he was slip-pery and I thought it would be a big step up,but if he wants a rematch, he can have one.”Chris Evangelou added, “I thought I had the

In this issue’s Mailshot pages,Dial-a-Cab driver Charlton Clark(F25) asks about the progress ofthe Society’s next generation ofin-cab terminals. Charlton was possibly taking something of

a risk in case the Chairman read his com-ments, because there was the teeniest hint ofsome sarcasm from the DaC driver when heended his letter by saying that he needed toknow when the terminals would be ready ashe was thinking of throwing a 16th birthdayparty for his current one and wanted noticeso that he could get the invitations sent out!So we asked Brian Rice to give an

update! The DaC Chairman told Call Sign:“Yes Charlton, I agree that our current ter-

minals need to be replaced as they are look-ing a little dated at the moment. We are test-ing the new one and currently have two on abench and two in a taxi. But as you can prob-ably imagine, as with most new software, ourIT department have found some bugs. The manufacturing will not commence

until we are totally satisfied that we haveironed out most of the problems. This will be a fairly complex procedure as the old termi-

nals will be working on our old aerial sites,while the new ones will be on O2. Then there is also the new software. Once

that has been done, we will commence fit-ting. We envisage completing a hundred amonth, consequently some members willwait longer than others for their new termi-nal (that’s a hint, Charlton!), but if we can fitmore, then we will.And as your letter suggests that you have a

sense of humour, can I just add that your pos-sible position on the new terminal list couldmean that it might not be pertinent for you toorganise a 16th party for your terminal - per-haps you should look more to a 21st!”The new terminals will contain the

Knowledge Master Cabbies Mate A-Z mapsand satellite navigation software, whichinclude a central London super scale and

street level map, anextended arterialroad GreaterLondon map and aGreat Britain roadatlas. The Londonmap contains over24,000 speciallyselected points ofinterest. All the mapscan be ‘toggled’ atthe press of buttonand zoomed in orout up to four levels,also at the touch of a

button. There are speed and traffic light cam-era warnings, a cotton line drawn betweenlocation and selected destination, a facility totrace the route and the ability to search streetname, post code or point of interest.There is also automatic route planning in

navigation, a favourite destination storingfacility, a history of previous destinations anda database of almost half a million UK pointsof interest! And because the new terminals will be

working on O2, drivers will be able to cleartrips virtually anywhere and there will nolonger be the problem of no signal whenneeding to clear a credit card ride. And hope-fully they will also contain lots of work!

me nothing, it is the original one from when Ibought the cab five and a half years ago andI’ve done 188,000 miles, so I can hardly com-plain too much,” Barry continued sporting ahuge grin! Call Sign and the Roman Way staff stood

speechless in amazement at the revelation thata cab battery, with all the stresses and strains oftaxi work - and in particular radio taxi work -with its continual cycle of engine stop/startstarter motor engagement activity should - oreven could - last so long, was astounding.The N7 techies reckon a decent battery is

usually good for a couple of winters providedit is well maintained, while some of the cheap-er brands can just about outlive their warrantyperiod. So to hear of a battery that has per-formed reliably for so long is possibly a recordthat might be hard to beat. They went on tocompare it in Olympic terms to the winning ofa Gold medal in a record time! The demands of radio taxi work and every-

thing that involves including the additionalrequirement of powering the MDT itself, putshuge pressure on the battery to give 100% allthe time. Listening to a music radio or runninganother electronic device, especially when sta-

tionary while waiting for a passenger or sittingon a rank, simply adds to the load imposed onthe battery.With this in mind and as we enter the win-

ter months, Call Sign sought advice fromSheldon Posner of Cricklewood Carriersand also Tony and Jamie at taxi parts special-ist J V Bright in SE1. They all suggested thatnow might be an opportune time to ensurethe battery terminals and leads are scrupu-lously clean and secure. Loose fitting leads are

a major source of batteryfailure as dirty or loosecontacts means the bat-tery is not being chargedby the alternator. Wherepossible, maintain thewater level in the cellsusing the appropriate top-up fluid. Also, gentlyscratch the date of thepurchase of the batteryonto the casing so that

any warranty claim can be speedily resolved. Can you beat Barry’s battery time of five and

At a time when it’s not justtaxi drivers who are strug-gling to regain some of themomentum they had justfour short years ago, butboth major taxi manufac-turers having gone intoprint saying that condi-tions for selling their cabsare “extremely tough”with both showing heavylosses, the London TaxiCompany and their TX4may have found a gold-en saviour.

As Call Sign reportedlast month, the LTChave now completedthe deal to supplyAzerbaijan’s Baku TaxiCompany with 1000TX4s, but so happy isBaku’s director, IlgarGasimov, that they have now said they want to buyanother 2000 taxis!

Mr Gasimov told us: “This next batch will be delivered overthe next two years and bought in stages of around 200taxis every few months with 1,000 coming to Baku over thenext year and the first batch of 200 taxis arriving in January2013.”

The £53million agreement signed with Geely in 2006 thatinvolved building look-a-like London taxis in a joint venture fromtheir factory in Shanghai and with a £20million investment byManganese Bronze, seems now to be paying off in spades.

Hello ladies and gents,Getting back to normalWe are now into October and finally getting backto some kind of normality. It’s actually good to getthe City back again after the Olympics. Trip figuresare gradually rising on a daily basis now that theholiday season is at an end and schools are back,albeit roadworks and its associated traffic conges-tion have also returned to pre - Olympic levels! Having said that and I know I’ve said it

many, many times before, but with thosenumbers picking up, it is so very importantthat all trips are covered as quickly as possibleand that arrival times and any acceptabledelays are continually updated. If your delayis taking longer than you at first thought,please remember to send a revised ‘delay’ so

that the client can be further informed.

JPM Rolling RankThe J P Morgan ‘Rolling Rank’ is working very welland there is certainly a lot more work coming outof E14, in fact so much so that at certain times ofthe day there are a lack of Dial-a-Cab taxis bookedinto the island, something we all need to address. As you know, procedures on the Island change

on weekdays from daytime working (6am until9pm) when you can book into E14C on any rankprovided you are inside of the security cordon, tojust E14working from 9pm up to 6am, Mondays toFridays and at all times throughout the weekend. You must then at all times be physically in

the E14 postal zone; booking in from any otherzone is a procedure violation. When both‘Rolling Ranks’ are operating, the trips are AsDirected and at this moment in time, outside ofthese hours all other trips will, in the main, beunmasked.

Temporary off facilityIt has become apparent that a minority of mem-bers are abusing their temporary off button whenon Canary Wharf in an effort to give them an unfairadvantage if and when certain trips are allocated.This is certainly not in the true spirit of the Societyand is not what the temporary off button wasdesigned for. It will be monitored over the comingweeks and I am sure those few drivers who arepushing the boundaries further than they should,know exactly where I am coming from.

You will also by now be aware of the terminalmessages each night asking drivers to book offE14C before 21:00. This is even more applicablesince the JPM Rolling Rank operates from this time.If persistent offenders choose to ignore the mes-sages from the Call Centre and accept a trip ratherthan following procedures, they will not only betaken off the trip, they will also lose their queueposition and may face a complaint if it is a regularoccurrence. Again it is only a very small minority,but they spoil it for the rest of us. Please play thegame...

“Yes, after half a million miles, we have to part,”DaC driver Lee Anderson (P57) told Call Signwith a sigh as he brought his old Fairway taxiinto the Roman Way depot to have the radioequipment stripped out, prior to being re-fittedinto his forthcoming TX4.“This old girl will be a hard act to follow,

because other than regular maintenance costsand consumables such as tyres and brakes, Ihave only ever needed to replace one coolantradiator, a water pump and a starter motor dur-ing our time together!” Lee’s wife Michelle had joined him to say

farewell and looked on approvingly with whatlooked like a lone tear in her eye as she listenedto Lee talking as though he was losing an oldfriend..“While I’m looking forward with high hopes

for the future with a TX4, I have realistic – if notlower – expectations of the reliability of the TXsimply because of the rugged longevity of myold bus right there,” Lee said pointing towardsthe aged cab sitting forlornly in the work bay.“But I never considered an alternative worktool other than another LTC product – a realtaxi!” Before driving away in his new mode of

transport, Lee remembered some of the peopleand events that had involved his Fairway.“Well,” Lee offered, “there was a time when I

thought that either I, or the cab, was puttingthe mockers on people because a week after SirRobin Day was in my cab on an account ride,he died. Then shortly after that, Paula Yatesgot in and blow me down, within a few days of

stepping out of my taxi, she too had left thislife!” At that point Lee and Call Sign’s intrepidreporter were not sure whether to laugh or cry.“I recall Paula coming out to the cab carrying

an inflated plastic chair,” Lee continued, “andthen struggling down the road with it after I sether down in Notting Hill, so maybe it was that.I’ll never really know, but after those two eventsI was tempted to ask everyone I stopped forwhether their life insurance was fully paid up!”But to prove that his Fairway wasn’t really

connected with any bad luck, Lee named actorLarry Lamb, Madness frontman Suggs andIrish singer Rose-Marie as being really pleas-ant... “And both Sir Robin and Paula were always

very nice as well - which is more than I can sayabout a now retired middle and super-mid-dleweight former world-champion boxerwhose name I won’t mention, but if you’vepicked him up you’ll know exactly who Imean!” Lee’s voice tailed off at the thought.The taxi Strip-Out process complete, Lee left

the depot with the words hard act to followechoing from his lips...

My Fairway will be ahard act to follow!

Cutting the ribbon!Generally in life, the most things that I am askedto open are onion jars and my wallet at a familygathering! Obviously doors for ladies and theelderly I do automatically.

So it was a nice surprise and lovely – if unex-pected - gesture when the management of thelocal gym, Greens in Chingford, which I havebeen frequenting for quite a few years, asked if Iwould do the honours and cut the ribbon at thehanding over ceremony as it is now owned byNuffield Health.

I was a bit taken aback at first and askedmyself the obvious question; why me and whynot a local celeb as a few of them use the gym?Surely not because I write for Call Sign!Naturally, I didn’t want to talk myself out of thehonour, so I gratefully accepted.

So up bright and early on 1st September, inmy best suit and tie and polished shoes, I proud-ly cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony. I hadto put up with quite a few Dial-a-Cab membersand other taxi drivers ribbing me all day aboutautographs and speeches! But I loved everyminute of it.

September 12th saw an interview with thelocal paper and even more photos! Who knows,I could end up kissing babies and standing as USPresident – or at least to open the gym hebelongs to!!!

Legacy of sport on TVNow that the Olympics are over, there is muchtalk about the legacy of the Games. If TV is any-thing to go by, it seems that after the BBC andthen Channel 4 finished their stints on theOlympics and Paralympics, that daytime viewinghas once again reverted back to the same dia-tribe of boot sales, auctions, crime show re-runs

and family argument programmes like TheJeremy Kyle Show. Hardly inspiring stuff and itgenerally shows our youth in a negative way.

Judging by the massive viewing figuresfor the excellent coverage by both Channel4 and BBC, with multi channels and red but-ton options, there is no doubt of therebeing an appetite for watching all types ofsport on terrestrial TV.

We watched both forms of the Games withcommentators quoting statistics and careers ofour own sportsmen and women who had obvi-ously been competing and training for years, butwho were complete strangers to us. For we arm-chair fans, the thought of getting excited overBMX racing and wheelchair rugby just sixweeks ago would have been laughable, but ascrazy as it all appeared to us, they had us on theedge of our seats and wanting more!

The terrestrial channels have lost most ofthe football, cricket and rugby to subscrip-tion TV; the networks should now grab theinitiative and promote these lesser sportsthrough the medium of television, helpingto attract larger viewing figures and specta-tors to the live events, with the prospect ofadvertising at the events being shown onthe screen.

There would be more money and sponsorscoming into the respective sports, further help-ing our bright and committed athletes to achievegreater results while providing more facilities andopportunities for others to emulate their new-found heroes.

That’s the legacy I would like to see...

The Olympics were over, it wasbeginning to get busier and mymeter was starting to earn itsrental. Ok, I was hardly gettingrushed off my feet, but comparedto the six weeks when passengerstook note of all the warnings andkept well away from London, itwasn’t bad.I dropped my passenger at

Paddington having brought himfrom Wapping and was delightedto see a long queue of prospectivepassengers waiting for us kind-hearted taxi drivers to dispatchthem to their onward destinations.I pulled out of the station in caseany cabs were waiting to come in, did a quick U-turn on the bridgeand went straight back in again.A few cabs were either side of the pick-up island, with the station

marshals doing their best to keep the queues moving. Many passen-gers were literally drowning under the weight of their suitcases – thatwas until I reached the point. There stood my passenger, around 18years old, two metres in height, compulsory baseball cap facing backto front and dressed in a vest that must have been three sizes too big,torn jeans and expensive looking trainers. Never mind luggage, therewasn’t even any sign of a carrier bag.“Terminal three at Heathrow, mate,” he said as he jumped in. The

enthusiasm you’d normally get from such a request on an alreadybusy day wasn’t there for this trip. My only thought was how he wouldpay? Of course, I could have made an excuse and pulled away, but thatwould have shifted the problem on to the next driver – and some-thing inside me kept asking how I’d like it if someone else did it tome. So I decided that I would take this guy, who looked like every yobyou always told yourself you’d never pick up, and on arrival atHeathrow I would keep my foot on the brake so that he couldn’t getout until he had paid – always assuming he actually had any money!Thankfully it was a reasonably clear run and within 35 minutes we

were heading along the slip road towards the tunnel. Just as I wasreminding myself about the footbrake, he said his first words thatweren’t actually whispered into a phone.“Can I pay with a debit card, mate?”Result, I thought, perhaps I was going to get paid after all! I asked

for the card and swiped it before we entered the tunnel. A bleep onthe terminal told me what my inner self already knew. Card declined,it read. I tried again on the airport side of the tunnel with the sameresult. I told him he’d have to pay cash and naturally his response wasthe one I knew he’d give.“I’ll have to go into the terminal to use a cash machine then.

Strange, though,” he continued, “I’ve used it several times today with-out any problems.”“Of course you have,” I thought to myself, “and your dad is Santa

Claus!”I pulled up to the end of the terminal where I saw two wardens

talking and told them of my predicament. I asked if I could leave thecab for a few minutes while I went to the .cash point with my pas-senger. While they agreed I could leave the cab there, they said that Ihad to wait with it. So off trotted the passenger, leaving his purse witha screwed up travel card in it with an expiry date in 2009 as deposit.“He’ll be back,” said one of the wardens, “after all you still have his

luggage.” When I explained that he had no luggage, to her eternal credit one

of the wardens tried to follow the passenger, but his long legs left herstanding and she returned apologising profusely.So the question remains: Why did I take him? And that’s exactly

what the warden who chased after him also asked. There was no realanswer. I hadn’t had a bilk for at least ten years – possibly longer –and perhaps my faith in humanity is stronger that it should be. But at

least I had used up this decade’sbilk and I got back into the cab. Suddenly the warden tapped on

the door. I looked up and therestrolling towards me was my bilkerwith three £20 notes in his hand.“Sorry to keep you,” he said,

“but there was a queue for theATM. Oh yes, can I have my walletback please. It belonged to my latemother and I’d hate to lose it.”I didn’t bother telling him that it

was £61.80, sixty smackers did menicely. I thanked him and off he

trotted into the terminal, once again with his phone stuck to his ear. I thanked the wardens for their help and drove off. I gave the ter-

minal a tap to set the screen back into view and was surprised to seethe passenger’s debit card details. I sent a message to dispatch askingwhy the details were there when the card had been declined.“Your terminal must have been jammed; you should have pressed the

resync button to clear it,” explained an anonymous wordsmith. Iexplained that I no longer needed it and didn’t expect to have to payany credit card charges. It was changed to cash and I went back to work.Ok, he came back and his card was genuine after all. But he was

probably still a yob – after all, he had no luggage!

away at the age of 86 and David wrote amoving piece about him, now his motherMary – who preferred to be called Michelleor Micky – has also passed on at the ageof 93 and David has penned a piece abouther. “My beloved mother Mary Cohen was bornon May 3rd 1919 and the world became a rich-er place. She was raised in Stepney in whatwas then the Jewish Area of London with herfive brothers and one sister.She became a seamstress in a tailoring shop.

When WW2 was thrust upon us, she volun-teered to join the Auxiliary Territorial Service(ATS) and worked in dangerous locationsaround the Kent coast, being involved in thespotting of enemy aircraft intent on destroy-ing this country. On two separate occasions,her look out posts were attacked by Germanfighter planes and she survived the ordeal.She married my Father, also an East End

boy and a union that lasted over 60 years.My Mother was a giver and gave love and

affection to her family and friends. She alwaysseemed to understand that people were notperfect and she would forgive all transgres-sions. She installed the virtues of toleranceand forgiveness to her children and passed onher wisdom and comprehension of the imper-fect world in which we live.She loved to cook, and her Apple Pie and

Strudel were almost legendary in our family.She loved the sunshine and to be buried on asunny day would defiantly have met with herapproval.

My Mother had a wonderful sense ofhumour. She loved a saucy joke. Just one daybefore her death, I was sitting by her side,holding her hand just as I did as a child, talk-ing and remembering happier times. Sheknew she was not going to beat this illnessand was very pragmatic regarding the end ofher life. She said: “David, I've had 93 years and that's

enough. I've given life to you and your sis-ter and I've always tried to be a good per-son. If there's an afterlife, I want to comeback as a bird - a Robin or an Owl. Don’tsit Shiva for me; just remember me inyour heart.”My nephew Adam was with her when she

passed away on Sunday evening and therewas a flock of birds making a loud commo-tion in the tree outside of the window at thatexact time. Now she will rest beside myFather and be missed by those who knew andloved her as a remarkable kind and lovingwoman.I know I speak for my sister Samantha and

myself, for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren when I say that I will think ofyou and miss you Mum every day for the restof my life.Rest in peace, I will cherish your mem-

ory forever. Your loving son David...”

Almost but not quite! That could have been theafter match comment from Wembley FC’s TechnicalDirector, Terry Venables, as his assistant for theevening, Martin Keown, left the club’s Vale Farmground after Wembley were unceremoniouslydumped out of the FA Cup by Uxbridge.

The month had begun well for the team withDial-a-Cab driver Lee Pearce (J71) in goal and ex-pro guests for FA Cup matches, Ray Parlour,Martin Keown, Graeme Le Saux, Brian McBrideand Argentinian superstar Claudio Caniggia allready to play when needed! In addition, Lee had hisown personal trainer in ex-Arsenal and Englandgoalkeeper David Seaman!

The team’s first cup game – shown live on ESPN -saw Wembley defeat Langford FC 3 – 2 with a four-figure crowd said to be 10 times the usual number!Wembley’s reward in the next round was an awaytrip to Uxbridge – a team one league higher thanWembley’s Lions – but you’d have never guessed it!

From the start, Wembley started knocking the ballaround with Claudio Caniggia playing like a man 10years younger than his 40+. After 25 minutes, PaulShelton gave the visitors a deserved lead and 15minutes later Daryl Atkins doubled Wembley’s leadand an FA Cup shock was well and truly on thecards. But halfway through the second half, Wembleybegan to tire and Uxbridge scored twice in 2 minutesthrough Kevin Warner and Chris Moore. Then itwas a matter of hanging on for a replay.

The ninety minutes were up and there were justthree minutes of injury time added on. Wembleyhad possession and looked safe, but with just sec-onds left of that third minute, Chris Moore ranthrough and had an open goal to shoot at to giveUxbridge the win. But Lee Pearce threw himself atthe shot and managed to parry it. The ball shotupwards and Moore tried to finish it the second

time, but the DaC man pulled off another great saveand the replay was on.

After that game, Terry Venables said that hehad been pleased with the way Wembley played,even though they had shown those signs of tired-ness. However, the replay was a strange game.Again shown live on ESPN, Uxbridge started thestronger, but Lee Pearce stopped all their goalattempts. However, in the end their superiorstrength and league position began to tell and bythe end of 90 minutes, the away team had estab-lished a 5-0 lead.

Lee Pearce told Call Sign: “If we could have

held on to that lead in the away game, whoknows what might have been. But we’ll neverknow now.”

Budweiser, the sponsors who brought the ex-prosto Vale Farm, are continuing to assist Wembleyalthough the ex-pros are now ex-pros once again. LeePearce still maintains contact with David Seaman andat the time of writing, ESPN were still showing theirweekly Wembley FC: Dream On programmes...

There was a time when private hire had to becareful about using the word ‘taxi’ or ‘cab’ inadvertising. Nowadays it seems that mostthings are just accepted and that minicabscan quite easily get away with mini transgres-sions!

LTPH do chase up reported incidents wherea PH company attempt to get away with mov-ing the boundary ever further, but there areminicab companies all over London that nowuse a variation of the word taxi.

Dial-a-Cab drivers over the years have sentin reports of minicabs incorporating theword taxy or taxee or even tacksy! But use of

the word ‘cab’ now seems to have been fullyaccepted.

A DaC driver (who forgot to add hisname) sent us this photo of a minicab. Atone time the company concerned wouldhave been breaking the law – not onlythrough inferring the word cab, but alsofor having such tinted glass that it wasimpossible to read the licence. Now noone either knows or apparently cares!

In 1997 she joined theCompany as a Freeman and was clothedas a Liveryman in 2004 when theCompany gained Livery status.Once Brenda had been installed by

Terry Catherall (Y90) did a cycleride to Brighton in 2010 for chari-ty and enjoyed it so much thathe thought he’d do another one.But this one was to be somewhat further

afield – to Paris and for a charity that haslong been associated with the London taxitrade, The Royal British Legion. Following the demob of so many males

after the end of WW2 with most having nojobs to go to, it was the Legion that encour-aged many of them to go onto the Knowledgeand become taxi drivers by setting up theBritish Legion Knowledge School.Terry began training for the ride in

February and continued right through thesummer to make sure that if anything wentwrong, at least it wouldn’t be because helacked fitness! Terry had his bike specially made and

maintained for the ride by Russell Coe ofVandome Cycles. Coloured red and black,he aptly named it Poppy. Terry continuesthe story for Call Sign…Firstly I’d like to thank my wife Dawn for

putting up with all my training - around 2000miles since February – and the fact that it seri-ously disrupted our social life. I must alsothank training partners ChristopherMcKellick, Bernie Kerslake and the ‘wehate hills’ cycling group at Club Woodham!

Riding my Poppy with pride: Day onefrom Crystal Palace FC to Dover... A refuel at Aylesford Legion village, then on

to catch our ferry. Got soaked and dried outthree times that day! Thankfully we had nomore rain from then on all the way to Paris...Day two... The day started with a service at the CalaisWar Memorial, an emotional start to the day.From there on we had a team of Frenchmotorcycle out-riders providing a rollingroad block each day all the way to the centreof Paris. We had 250 cyclists split into three

groups, each with back up vehicles carryingmedical staff, mechanics to maintain thebikes - everything like a military operation, asyou would expect from the Legion.

Day three... Another memorial service, this one atAbbeville. Then it was on though some beau-tiful countryside and villages with locals mak-ing us feel very welcome by waving flags andcheering us on. Just fantastic!Later that day we arrived in Beauvais to a

great reception by the Mayor - she was muchbetter looking than Boris! Then there wasanother service of remembrance beforeputting the bikes to bed for the night. By nowI’m becoming au fait with the French nation-al anthem!Day four... Onwards into Paris with a couple of stops forfood and drink. As we approached the centre,the crowds grew larger and noisier, policesirens were blaring out and tourists, includ-

ing many Brits,were going ballis-tic as they spottedour lead riderwith a rather largeUnion flag flyingon a ten foot highwhip aerial! With

the Champs Elysees closed except for us, wefelt as though Paris belonged to us - albeit foronly a short time!Celebration drinks were on hand before

the most poignant of all the wreath-layingservices at the Tomb of the UnknownSoldier situated beneath L’Arc deTriomphe. A lot of grown men cried thatday.

The trip was filled with poignant momentswhich I shall always remember, but therewere so many other times when the tripbecame an unforgettably enjoyable experi-ence. It seems that so many of you enjoyed readingmy last article involving a taxi job I did ratherthan my usual type of BoM report, that CallSign’s Editor has asked me to do anotherone! So here goes – although unlike my lastone, this one doesn’t involve drugs and pros-titutes!Many of Dial-a-Cab’s older drivers will

remember Shell Haven in Thurrock (Essex).It had been purchased by the Shell Companyas an oil refinery, but closed in 1999. Severalyears later it was taken over by marine termi-nal operator DP World, one of the largestoperators of its kind in the world. They alsotook over the P&O Company. So here goes...I was sitting on point at a Heathrow rank.

It was around 11pm one evening and the oneand only passenger walked towards me andsaid a few words in a language that I couldn’tunderstand. He then handed me a piece ofpaper with the words Shell Haven and aphone number on. At the same time hescreamed out: “Shell. I join ship. Phoneagent. Ship Capitan will pay fare.”I phoned the number and after a short

while, a man answered who sounded asthough he had just woken up. I explainedthat I had a passenger who apparently hadflown in from North Africa and wanted to goShell Haven to join a ship. When I eventually gave his name, the agent’s

first comment was to leave him at the airport ashe was just a member of the catering staff. Butalmost immediately he suddenly changed hismind and gave me instructions and directionswhere to take the passenger. The agent alsosaid that the ship’s Captain would pay the farebut that I should phone again when I reachedthe entrance to the docks.On reaching Shell Haven, I phone the

agent and after around twenty minutes wemet up. He certainly did not look too happyto see the passenger and asked who told himto come to the UK? After a number of heatedwords between the two men, the agent gotinto the cab alongside the passenger and

directed me to a quayside. As we arrived, the agent said that we need-

ed to walk part of the way. Together with myHeathrow passenger, we got out of myMetrocab and followed the agent to the quay-side. I asked where the ship was and was toldit was moored out in the estuary and hewould contact someone to take us out to it.By this time, I was beginning to feel a bitapprehensive. The fact that it was a cold,dark and damp winter’s night and somewhatmisty as in the cheaper horror movies, didn’thelp me feel any better!Some 30 minutes passed when I heard the

engine of a boat, but the mist stopped mefrom seeing anything. We went to the edge ofthe quay and as I looked down I saw a smallboat with a very elderly sailor in command –a sort of scruffy Captain Birds Eye! The only way to reach the boat was via a

plank of wood placed from the quay to thesmall dinghy. Once we were all aboard, weset off. I couldn’t see a thing but within a

short time the dinghy hit something with amighty thud. I asked what we’d hit? It was theship - an oil tanker!The agent and my passenger began shout-

ing to try and attract the attention of anyoneon the ship. After a few minutes a voice cameout of the mist. The agent explained the situ-ation and we were told that a ship’s officerwould be sent for. He soon arrived togetherwith a crew member and they unravelled arope ladder, which our elderly boatman thentied to the dinghy as though he’d done it onemillion times before. Looking at him, heprobably had! Both the agent and the NorthAfrican started to climb aboard the tanker.They then told me to climb up because the

Captain was the only person authorised topay the fare and he would require a receipt. Ilooked at the rope and at the same time sawa vision of my wife and family. I made a deci-sion: “Stuff the fare! There’s no way I’m goingto climb up that bit of old rope!”The agent looked at me in astonishment

and then said that I should wait for him totake him back to the quayside. I had nochoice as I would never have found the cabagain without him guiding me.After fifteen minutes, I heard him calling

me. He said he was going to stay on-boardthe tanker until morning, but that he wassending a piece of rope with a glove attacheddown the side of the ship. It contained thetaxi fare and a petty cash receipt which I hadto sign. The rope was then pulled back upand I went back to the quayside with CaptainBirds Eye. I got into the cab and went home.And do you know, no one ever believed me...!

THANK YOU LONDON TAXIS!In Call Sign’s July issue we ran a story about 20 year old Yorkshire born Paralympic athlete, Hannah Cockroft. She was the holder of two WorldChampionships and on her way by coach – together with her specially adapted racing wheelchair – to theOlympic stadium where she was to be involved in the first track meeting prior to the Olympics starting.

All Hannah had to worry about was getting to the stadium, but that turned into a nightmare when hercoach broke down. The coach driver called a minicab but the wheelchair wouldn’t fit in, so Hannah did whatanyone with any commonsense would do – she hailed a licensed London taxi. She explained the situation tothe driver and because she was now running so late, she asked the driver if he would mind her gettingchanged in the back of the cab whilst they were making their way to the stadium! Being a gentleman, thedriver said yes and adjusted his mirror to give Hannah as much privacy as he could. En route, he told Hannahthat he was delighted at getting the opportunity of seeing how to get into the Olympic stadium.

Hannah later told Call Sign that the driver helped her to relax even though she was running very late –but at least she was on the way! They reached the security barrier and the driver explained that he had anathlete in his cab who was scheduled to go in a race that was to be off in just minutes, but G4S securityshowed why it was about to lose £50million for being rather stupid in the way it prepared – or didn’t asthe case may be! The guard wouldn’t allow him in. Hannah said she was scheduled to be in the 100 metresand that she had already missed her warm-up time, but nope, G4S were not allowing taxis in! So Hannah got out andfound her own way to the track. She said that it had been the worst preparation she'd ever had before a race, totally missing the warm-up and literallyjust having time to get her race number on and go straight onto the track for the race. Amazingly, she not only won, but broke the world record in theprocess, putting her name into the record books as the first world record holder at the London Olympic stadium! And of course there can only ever beone ‘first’ so the record will last forever.

But that wasn’t Hannah’s only first because – no thanks to G4S – Hannah won Team GB’s first gold medal when she took the Paralympics’ 100metre wheelchair race in a new record time of 18.05 seconds. She also went on to take the 200metres gold medal as well! When Call Sign called her,she remembered all about that taxi driver who got her to the track on time and she sent her thanks.

“Without the encouragement of that world record, my confidence may well have taken a knock and who knows if I would have thenwon those two gold medals! I don’t know his name, but London’s black taxis will always now hold a special place in my heart.”

To us, Hannah is someone we’ll remember for her humility, sporting prowess and yes, for being gorgeous!

Yes, I know the London Olympics are overand the Editor has already told us to keep stuffon the Games to a minimum as the last fewissues already had enough on them! But hey,there’s one young former Dial-a-Cab employ-ee who could well have been standing on anOlympic podium to collect a gold medal - andit was a young lady!The 6ft 6ins, 25 year old Peter Wilson

enthralled the nation when he sank to hisknees in relief after securing the double trapgold medal after firing 188 from 200 clays towin the 2012 shooting event. But going back afew years, Call Sign was sponsoring a youngDaC call taker whose shooting credentialsknock Peter Wilson’s into a cocked hat!It was some ten years ago and at the age of

24, Donna Merry was handed what must bethe ultimate honour in any sport - the captain-cy of her country. Even at that young age, shehad already been representing England for 6years and according to many in her sport, shewas the best female shooter in the country andvery close to being number one overall.Then in just one amazing year, Donna

took the English, Scottish and Irish titlesbefore adding to them by amazingly cap-turing the British Championship!The following year, the regular sponsor of

the European Championships withdrewtheir sponsorship after going into administra-tion. A tearful Donna phoned Editor AlanFisher and told him not to bother going towatch as the Championships looked like beingcancelled.Alan told Brian Rice, who agreed to spon-

sor the event and for that year, it became theDial-a-Cab European Championships. And noprizes as to who won after she defeated formerEngland Captain, Steve Taylor and the-thencurrent World Championship Gold medal win-ner Craig Lakey! Donna really was at the top of the mountain

with just one challenge left - the WorldChampionships held in San Antonio, Texas.After all, she had just beaten last year’s WorldChampion!By now she was the number one shooter in

the country, yet still a call taker at BrunswickHouse! Happily for her, Brian Rice agreed tolet her have the time off and she crossed theAtlantic to test her skills, not just against UKshooters, but against the best in the world!Well, even Donna admitted that the winner ofthe gold medal in her event was just unbeat-able and did not miss with a single shot! Butshe came a close second and returned toBrunswick Place with the silver medal and asilver cup for best individual performanceafter the winner.The only problem left was one of motivation

and she found going back to small-time shoot-ing events difficult - but she still did enough tokeep her shooting eye in. Then one year onand still at DaC, she took a University ITdegree course but it interfered with her shoot-ing, so something had to go and sheneeded the degree.In 2005` Donna confirmed to Call Sign

that she had fired her last shot. She saidthat her love for shooting had diminishedand that she was finding it difficult to com-pete against some of the newer youngshooters. She left DaC with her IT degree

having been offered a PA job with a largebank, but before going she sent this maga-zine a message.“I’d like to thank Call Sign for sponsoring

me over the past five years and especially BrianRice who always turned up at those events topresent the prizes. Winning the Euros wassuch a big thing for me, and DaC coming in atthe last minute to sponsor them made me feelso proud of working for an organisation thatwould do that for an employee.”So really, we’ll never know the answer, but

The ever-vigilant Vic at Dial-a-Cab’s Roman Way depot was shopping recently at his local WalthamForest superstore, when he spotted this ultra-modern looking smart car parked up and took aphoto for Call Sign.

“With all those artificial eyes popping out from every corner of the car roof, you have to be very‘smart’ not to get caught on camera. As well as the regular telescopic camera, the vehicle is fittedwith ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) equipment, which means that the operative cancheck for any outstanding court summonses, unpaid parking fines, together with info on whetherit is taxed and insured and to confirm that the vehicle’s MoT hasn’t expired!

“All this information, together with the owner/driver’s details, will flash up on the smart car’s onboard computer screen in just seconds,” Vic continued, his electronic technical expertise in suchmatters coming to the fore, “so there is no chance of escape if you do not play their game and Ihave no doubt these highly mobile money making wagons will be rolled out across London verysoon. And if they can’t get you via their technology, I suppose they could always revert to just run-ning you over!”

With that, Vic put his camera away and made for his car, realising that his frozen peas werebeginning to melt!

Hello! I’ve been a bit of a stranger the pastfew months much to the Editors’ chagrin(or relief) due to being too busy at work,while in my personal life trying out any newgames. Consequently, I’ve not had anythinginteresting to write about; mind you, itseems that although there are a steadystream of games available on all platforms,none of them is sufficiently different fromthe current plethora of games that alreadyflood the market. With the run-up to Xmasgaining momentum - is it that time of yearalready - I will have some game recommen-dations for you next month. However, thismonth I thought I’d recommend some ofmy favourite websites, with hopefully some-thing here for everyone.1. Gizmodo (www.gizmodo.co.uk): Thiswebsite is in blog format and very easy toread. Journalists who write for Gizmodo(a blog which started in the USA) provideup-to-the-minute news of gadgets, as wellas the latest rumours of what new gadgetsare on the horizon. If you’re an Applefan, this blog is the only place you needgo for live minute-by-minute updates onthe latest and greatest Apple productlaunches. This blog isn’t just about tech-nology; they often write about fascinatingsubjects like the Mars Curiosity landingand solar flares. All their posts are in ashort and easy to digest format.2. MakeUseOf (www.makeuseof.com):Another blog-format website, this one start-ed out as a ‘how-to’ website but has grownto list hundreds of articles on all manner ofsubjects. Many of their user-friendly guides(often written like the “Dummies” series ofbooks for clarity) are available for free PDFdownload. There are other, bigger websitesout there (like www.about.com) but for gen-eral interest and readability, MakeUseOf iseasier reading.3. Udemy (www.udemy.com): This websiteis fairly new, so it is still growing. Anyonecan provide video lecture courses on hereand anyone can watch those courses. Manyof the available courses are free, but someof the best ones do require payment (theyaccept PayPal). I’ve bought and studied acouple of courses on this website and canattest to their high standard as well as thewhole user experience. If you want tolearn Calligraphy or Microsoft Office orpretty much any other subject (whetherhobbyist or professional), you could do alot worse than to try out Udemy. PersonallyI find learning a whole lot easier from 30minute video lectures (anything from 5 to50 of these per course), rather than read-ing textbooks or attending physical cours-es. It allows you to learn at your own pace,revisit previous lectures and take noteswhenever you want to. Many of the lectur-ers even let you download their video lec-tures so you can watch them offline on atablet or laptop.4. Lifehacker (www.lifehacker.com):Here’s another blog-format website whichI find useful and interesting. There arethousands of posts on this website cover-ing every topic under the sun. They pro-vide tips and tricks for all sorts of things

ranging from kitchen hacks to money sav-ing tips to which apps to buy. There arealso plenty of downloads available like rec-ommended free Android and Apple apps,complete with reviews.5. Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org):A bit like Udemy, but aimed specifically atthe academic world. This website was setup by Salman Khan, a graduate of MIT. Hewanted to “provide a high quality educa-tion to anyone, anywhere,” so everythingon this website is free. There are thou-sands of academic video lectures availableto anyone, covering almost every subjectyou can imagine. If you have children inschool, college or university, get them tosign up to the Khan Academy; it will surelyhelp them in their academic studies.6. Vodo (www.vodo.net): No doubt youhave heard about the huge problem of ille-gal downloading of copyright movies andhow doing so can result in court actionand even imprisonment. Well, this is onewebsite which actively encourages you todownload every movie in its database forfree - and it is perfectly legal! Don’t get mewrong, you won’t get any Hollywoodblockbusters or TV series here as thatwould be illegal, instead, this website pro-vides movies and TV series from amateurfilm makers who are working hard to get

into the mainstream. This isn’t a bunch ofYouTubers making movies of their kittens;rather, these are high quality films and pro-grammes made with HD cameras with fullcasts. If you like a specific film or series andwant the maker to develop more, you canhelp fund them. This is what YouTubeshould have been like!7. This final website is one that everyoneknows about, so I’m not going to go intoany detail about the website itself. Rather,I’m going to bring your attention to a use-ful tool that you might not know about; Ionly discovered it by accident recently:The Wikipedia Book Creator. OnWikipedia, as you no doubt know, thereare millions of articles on every subjectthat pretty much every existed. With allthis information, sometimes siftingthrough it all can be a mammoth task; somuch to read, so little time to read it all!What you can now do is make an eBookout of all the articles you find interesting,so that you can read it offline withoutneeding access to the Internet and with-out having to search for the subjects ofyour interest. Simply go toh t t p : / / e n . w i k i p e d i a .org/wiki/Special:Book and click EnableBook Creator (it is free). Now you cansearch for articles of interest, and as youfind one, click Add to My Book. Marc Turner (R97) has made many appear-ances in Call Sign because as he wouldundoubtedly admit, he is a real stubborn so-and-so!He has had several battles with private

hire vehicles who were taking liberties –one in particular who took offence atMarc telling him to pull his car off an offi-cial taxi rank. The minicab driver thentried to run Marc over! On another occa-sion he caught a Luton licensed taxi ply-ing for hire outside a club on a Saturdaynight. After giving the driver the option ofpulling off, he later caught him doing thesame thing elsewhere and not onlyreported him to the Luton licensingauthority, but also drove up there to givehis evidence in person. As Marc told us atthe time, the driver may have beenlicensed, but in London he was no betterthan a tout.But most of his “battles” in this mag have

been where he has refused to give in to a PCNand he has had consistent success since dis-covering that a face to face appeal is often agood option to not only avoiding the irrita-tion of paying a PCN, but to also provide theadded joy of beating a local council in theirnever-ending quest to gain funds from thehard-working taxi drivers of London. But what he hadn’t yet done was to appeal

a PCN received from our masters of London’stransport system (yes, we are supposed to bea part of it), Transport for London. Marctakes up the story...“I’ve recently had my fourth consecutive

PCN appeal success. That time saw a CCTV‘sniper’ seeing me allegedly setting down onthe zigzags in Great Marlborough Street. Asalways for non-DaC PCNs, I contacted theLTDA and we viewed the images but theirPaul Wright felt the evidence was damning,therefore I might be better off just paying thefine to Westminster Council. Within 15 min-utes I was down at the post office sending myappeal via the usual recorded delivery. Sorry

Paul, I`m just a glutton for punishment!As you’d expect, in just over a week I

received my Notice of Rejection fromWestminster. Well I wasn't too disheartenedbecause I’m often called a reject - or was thatretard! I`ll have to ask the Mrs - when shespeaks to me again! My adjudication was set for 09.15 on

Saturday 22 September and I was looking for-ward to it - yeah, I do need to get a life! Ibegan wondering whether I`d get to lockhorns with my old adversary ‘The Lady’ whoI was up against last time. She somehowmade me feel rather irrelevant whist display-ing what looked like utter boredom! Yes, Iwonder if she still thinks of me! As the old adage says: When man makes

a new toy. It`s called...wait forit...Transport for London! Yes, PCN num-ber 5 was from the God of transport - TfL.The LTDA say I’ve done amazingly well towin four on the spin, but added that TfLare a tough nut to crack. One reason is thatthey don`t let you view images at yourleisure on the net. You or an advocate haveto pre-arrange a time to visit their office inCroydon to view the rushes or they canrelieve you of £10 to receive the DVD - youhave to supply your own popcorn!So I went in blind and appealed against a

PCN for stopping at a Tesco’s loading bay inE14. Yes, I know it was serious and weshouldn’t laugh, but the LTDA had warnedme that TFL are tougher than all the others.So it was much to my surprise that TfL

capitulated at the first hurdle and the PCNhas been cancelled, making it 5 victories onthe spin. How do I get hold of the GuinnessBook of Records! But on reflection I mighthave to go some to get anywhere close toBarrie Segal's success rate when writing inCall Sign that he had appealed against 45 inone day and won them all! Dial-a-Cab’s Barry Spear (Y16) and MartinHizer (M47) were just two of many driverswho wrote to Call Sign following the all-dayprogramme on Sky Sports News that keptfootball fans on the edge of their seats withSky’s “who’s buying who,” as the first trans-fer window of the 2012/2013 season gotever-closer to its 11pm closure. After thattime, no more transfers could take place untilthe next window in January. The reason drivers called was because

of the DaC taxi with the name ‘Maicon’waiting outside the Tottenham HotspurChigwell training ground, Spurs Lodge,and right in shot behind Sky’s GaryCotterell as he was broadcasting live withall the transfer news as Spurs transfermarket – and all the other clubs – saw thatdeadline approaching.The expression “Taxi for Maicon” came

into being following Spurs’ two ChampionsLeague games against Italian soccer giants,Inter Milan in 2010, when Tottenham’s fly-ing winger Gareth Bale gave Milan defenderMaicon Douglas Sisenando – known asBrazilian soccer players all are by just onename – Maicon - a total runaround, leavingthe defender looking almost stationary asthough he was waiting for a taxi! At the time,Maicon was said to be the best right back inthe world and Brazil’s almost permanentright back, yet Gareth Bale constantly left himfor dead! Being an upmarket bunch, Spursfans began singing the expression Taxi forMaicon to Donna E Mobile from Verdi'sRigoletto!But how did Sky’s live broadcast have a

DaC Vito waiting by the Spurs Lodgeentrance with Maicon on the name board?Well we only had to ask DaC driver JohnGerber (N62), who planned the wholething. He explained all to Call Sign:“My son and I are both avid Tottenham

fans and he wanted to go to Spurs Lodgeon transfer deadline day and have hismoment of fame with the Sky camerasthere. So I decided I’d take him there, butjust before I pulled up outside I thought I’dput Maicon’s name on my DaC nameboard.

When we played Inter Milan a few yearsback, Gareth Bale gave this world classdefender the complete runaround and eversince then whenever they mention hisname, they say “Taxi for Maicon. And nowthat he was suddenly being transferred tothe Premier League with Manchester City,I thought I’d play a little joke. Getting thetaxi on TV was a real bonus!”Following the Inter Milan games, Gareth

Bale went online to say that the players hadpicked up the Taxi for Maicon chant and hada laugh about it. And now with the ironyfamous in football, Maicon was signed justbefore the transfer deadline, leaving InterMilan for Manchester City. It was that coin-cidence that gave John Gerber the idea andhis opportunity to fool the world!

It also means that on Sunday 11 November,Maicon will have either the chance of revengewhen his new team play Spurs in Manchesteron live TV, or he will prove that he was actu-ally waiting for a taxi during thoseChampions League games! Either way, listenout for football’s version of an operetta! The least John Gerber can do is to wait out-

side the ground in case Maicon – having beengiven another Gareth Bale runaround - needsa cab to Manchester Airport after decidingthat he wants to go home! Spurs have sincemoved to a new training ground inCheshunt. We haven’t been told whether thatwas to get away from John Gerber’s taxi!

Life after LehmanBrothersLooking back, 2008 was my halcyon year as ataxi driver with London buzzing and worklevels a plenty, however I used to say to pun-ters that I was enjoying it while it lasted! Forsome reason, I just knew it wouldn’t last andthat the saying would come back to haunt us:If it seems too good to be true, it probably is!It has been well documented that things

are tough, but what are we really looking forthings to return to? Well so far as I am aware,no drivers have handed their badges backbecause they can’t earn a living. Some driversmay have temporarily left the trade to pursueother work interests, only to return becausethey couldn’t make it pay. We are very luckyin that we are all self-employed people whohave guaranteed work; by that I mean thatpeople want picking up off the streets and weare the only drivers licensed to do it. But ifthe work comes back, how will affect us?Does it mean we will hit our targets earlierand head home a few hours before we usedto? Perhaps it means a day off in the week forgolf? Increased work levels would meangreater flexibility and control for us all.One thing about post Lehman Brothers is

that we’ve all had to change our workdays orworking week in one way or another andspend our time in different ways. We all wantto earn the most amount of money in the leastamount to time; however we’ve all had tolower our work expectation levels. I for onedon’t try and grind out another few poundsbut head for home instead. As for being a Dial-a-Cab driver, I’m doing a little less work than Iused to, but don’t rely on it so much. But Iwould always have it there simply because itgives me another string to my bow and twochances of getting a job, plus of course themapping, credit card facility and printer.Besides that, the circuit fees are good valuecompared to other companies that charge 10%on account trips, which would on my currentaverage week, double my subs. Yes, get a £60ride on GetTaxi and that’s £6 just for one job!I would also point out that lower work levelsare the same for everyone and it’s not any DaCemployee’s fault. If ComCab and RTG werebucking the trend, then there would be a case,however all the radio circuits are currentlytreading water.

Getting tyred!When it comes to taxi tyres, its horses forcourses and I’ve always come from theremould school of thought. I wouldn’t buythem if they were unsafe, but Jetyresremoulds, kingpin and extra are a good qual-ity product, much cheaper than newDunlops, use much less oil to produce andso are better for the environment. As for myprivate car, I always tended to buy new pre-mium tyres as instructed by the lady in myhouse who is an expert on all subjects!However I wasn’t convinced, so this time Ibrought budget tyres through Tyreshopperonline. You place an order then go toNational Autocentres who fit them for you.I have found the four Tigar Hitris tyres(owned by Michelin) that I bought to havebetter grip in the wet and make less noise

than the previous Firestones. So far so goodand if you want a budget tyre at half the priceof a premium tyre, try Tyreshopper.

TX4It’s now October, the cold weather and frostymornings will soon start to appear again andtime to see how my TX4 is doing. Well it’s stillrunning with 190k on the clock and the orig-inal engine and gearbox still in place. Irecently had a problem with the injectors and

decided it really needed a new set. I phonedM&O at the London Taxi Company only tobe told that they cost nearly £400 each! So Iwent to Good Diesel in Homerton HighStreet for a set of reconditioned injectors for£650. The difference in my cab is quite amaz-ing with improved MPG. As the TX4 gets older, it sometimes takes a

greater number of turns before firing up inthe mornings but I find that if you use a pre-mium diesel mixed with standard, there is animprovement. When it’s really cold, I onlyuse premium diesel but at other times put£15 in and fill the rest up with standard everythird fill.But talking of MPG, I was interested to

learn that the new Nissan NV 2000 will do 50MPG around the heavy stop-start streets ofLondon on a 1.5 litre engine. Well LTI’s orig-inal information about the TX4 said that itwould do 35 MPG but we really know it does26mpg. Similar claims happened when theVito came out, so the proof of the puddingwill be in the eating!

Exactly which version of taxi voters were thinking of isn’t known, but although the TXseries is now accepted as the London taxi, many consider its predecessor, TheFairway, as the picture they automatically see in their minds when thinking of an alltime London taxi. Whenever I go down BayhamStreet I always steal a glance atthe premises down the bottom onthe left. At the moment it's a Rent-a-Car establishment and down theyears it's been a tyre shop andtwice been auto electricians.It certainly was 40 years ago when run by a

very quiet but pleasant old boy who seemedto be able to work blindfolded. He sat at abench in what appeared to be a jumble ofwire, coils, batteries, fuses, dynamos andnumerous other bits and pieces. From time totime a woman appeared from somewherebringing him mugs of tea.So if you dealt with him, it was no problem.

But he had an assistant - a young Frenchman,and in those pre-EU days it was unusual tofind anyone French working here outside ofthe catering industry. The waiters were noto-riously rude and arrogant and this guy livedup to that reputation. As a young butter boy, I came up against

him on a couple of occasions. I once went inthere with a problem. He opened the bonnetput his hand down the side of the engine andannounced that I needed a Dynamo.“How” I asked the young Monsieur, “can

you tell just like that?”His lip curled, he stared at me for several

seconds as if to say how dare I question himand then he snarled: “Because eet ees ma job,zat is how!” Well that was me told.Then there was the time after breaking

down just before Christmas and the AA get-ting me started, that I drove straight to

Bayham Street and made the mistake of turn-ing off the engine. In an accent that InspectorClouseauwould have baulked at, he said: “Wewill 'ave to burmp start you.” I had no ideawhat he meant but was too embarrassed tosay. So I sat in the cab while he and two otherguys started to push, and push, and push! Ididn't know that you were supposed to stick itinto second gear, get up some speed, let outthe clutch and it would start. With Gallic furyand Xmas cheer he declared: “Are yew sureyou know 'ow to drarve?”I think that ended my association with

Bayham Street’s Auto Mechanics! I then dis-covered MAM of Midland Road and nowBlundell Street. Michael and his family (origi-nally from Cyprus) looked after me for manyyears.George from Warwick Avenue is his brother-

in-law and I may be wrong but I think that“Uncle” from Great Suffolk Street is ... hisUncle! In fact I've spent so much time withthem I now qualify for Greek citizenship! Butnot French, thank you…!

Shelley, 2007 winner of the LondonMarathon, also won Bronze in Beijing in2008 and I had the pleasure of meetingher at a charity function in a New York

hotel suite the follow-ing year - we wereboth representing anabsolutely fantasticcharity called Get KidsGoing. I must say Iwas certainly inspired(perhaps!) to have

another go at the 26.2 miles! Speaking ofwhich, I will always be grateful for thedonations that Call Sign readers made tomy fund raising appeal.

A Scottish getaway?After working right through the OlympicGames, I am now writing these notes frommy Scottish retreat - a log cabin nearGalloway Forest, which has had a sum-mer full of bookings after the 3-bed prop-erty was renovated and refurbished earlierin the year.

It has been made available for lettings -there is no swimming pool, but it's perfectfor walking, cycling and fishing holidays -rain or shine! And if the weather is clear,then there is no better view of the starsanywhere in the UK.

Learning about the ‘Island’A few weeks ago I popped into the IslandTrust, a voluntary organisation situated inEast Ferry Road, Millwall. Their main func-tion is to preserve and promote the her-itage of the Isle of Dogs.

The curator informed that, depending oninterest, they were considering laying on a6-week course on the history of the Island.I became quite interested myself in attend-ing an informal history lesson - no examsand no pressure for a change. Some of myBlack Cab Heritage Guides are also keen.

With the debate on whether there shouldbe a third runway at Heathrow hotting upsince new big boss – Transport SecretaryPatrick McLoughlin – came into the cabinetto replace Justine Greening who was vio-lently against any such idea, it has given CallSign the chance to turn the clock back some55 years and look at a suggestion from theT&G Workers Union in connection with theBritish European Airways Corporationabout London’s main Heathrow terminal,West London Air. If you are too young toremember, then it was where Sainsbury’s inCromwell Road is now.The vision of London Mayor Boris

Johnson’s new Britannia Airport with itsfour floating runways tethered to the sea bed,as designed by architects Gensler, is said tolook akin to an alien airport. However, back in1957 no one had even yet even heard of StarTrek or Yuri Gagarin and the widely heldbelief was that the moon was made of cheese! So those passengers going to Heathrow

back then would usually ask the taxi driverfor the West London Air Terminal. And asBritons were suddenly finding themselveswith money in their pockets again after the

ravages of war, more and more were chang-ing their holiday destinations from Southendto Majorca! As a result of Heathrow gettingbusier, BEAC and the T&G introduced a pricechart as of 6 October 1957, said to have beenthanks to the negotiating skill of T&G com-mittee member, referred to only as CabSection organiser, Brother Bradly. Anyoneout there in Call Sign land know of him?The idea was that if a passenger hailed

their own cab, or phoned the infant ODRTSwhere they were still 12 months away fromopening their first account (the BBC), thenthe metered fare would apply. But thanks toBrother Bradly, there was an agreement putin place where if you took passengers fromthe terminal to an hotel, then the hotelwould pay the fare plus a 10% tip – which wasguaranteed to be no less than 6d (2p).

However, if you werelucky enough to get ajob to a railway sta-tion, then you couldhave struck goldbecause BEAC wouldgive you a chit before

pulling away telling youthe destination andhow many passengers.The only downside wasthat you had to wait tillyou went back to theterminal on the nextvisit to cash in the chit. Although at that

time, extra passengerswere charged anyway,that was only 3d (1p)

each, so the extra prices were doubled and tothe drivers, it represented a very good deal.As an example, one passenger to

Paddington was charged as 5 shillings (25p),but each extra passenger increased the fareby 6d (2p), so a four-hander would get youan extra 1/6d (8p). When you consider thatthe fare to go all the way to Heathrow wasfixed at £1.13.0 (£1.65), then that extra toPadders was worth getting. The longest tripwas to Liverpool Street, which cost a singlepin 9/3d and with four passengers, earnedthe driver 10/9d (54p)!Around 20 years later, ODRTS had an

account opened at the terminal where driverswould deliver luggage that had gone missingduring the flight. That account was describedby many at the time as the best account we hadever had as the airlines, mainly BEA and BOAC,would pay to have the lost luggage deliveredback to its owners anywhere in the country! But now WLAT it is just another branch of

Sainsbury’s and Heathrow’s future looks tobe in doubt as an airport, to be replaced by ahuge housing development. Isn’t lifestrange...

Many of you would have seen the mes-sages that went out recently on driver’sterminals regarding coverage to a creditcard trip. The message referred to us testing our

Credit Card App. Since then, many dri-vers have contacted me to say thatalthough they had heard all the currenttalk about apps, they didn’t actually knowwhat they were and exactly what they did. Well, so far as the apps you have read

about in Call Sign and indeed the rest ofthe trade press are concerned, an app -short for application - is simply anotherway of ordering a taxi but rather than hav-ing to speak on the phone, it is done viaan Android or iPhone by simply pushinga few buttons.Users simply log on to the Apple web-

site and request to download the app theyrequire to their phone. Once received,they then register their credit card detailsinto their own phone and once this hasbeen done, they are ready to order theirtaxi. The idea is to simplify for the cus-

tomer how they order their cab, soDial-a-Cab have put together two varia-

tions for them. The first one is for their location to be

found via their phone using GPS (GlobalPositioning Satellite), while the other is forthem to manually enter where they wantto be picked-up from. Having registeredtheir credit card details into the phone, itis then sent directly to our dispatch systemand automatically offered to the first dri-ver within the pick-up zone. It really is that simple and because it

is felt that this is the way forward, wehave developed this in-house by our

own IT staff who have proved the tech-nology is not as mind blowing as somewould portray. Drivers have been raving about this

method of booking taxis and how they feelwe may have slipped behind in the tech-nology race. But I will say it again; it doesnot matter how simple you make orderinga taxi, the service is judged on how manytimes a cab turns up, how polite the driveris and how much it costs. If all these threeboxes are not ticked every time the userrequires a cab, I assure you there is far lessinvolved in deleting an app from a smart-phone than there is in setting one up! If Itell you that the Apps store has receivedover 25billion apps requests, that will tellyou what I mean. We are now at the stage where we

will be sending our app to Apple forapproval and we see no reason whythey should not accept it. We will thenmarket the product and off we’ll gointo the ‘appy world of apps! The success of this really does depend

on the service our drivers provide and it issomething we will be monitoring veryclosely before we offer this to otherclients.

VICTORIA STATION TAXIARRANGEMENTS

For the next five years!From Sunday 30 September 2012 until May 2017, there will be significant changes to thetaxi rank arrangements at Victoria Station. The planned changes are partly as a result ofthe ongoing Victoria Station Upgrade works and TfL has worked closely with Network Railand Westminster City Council to ensure that taxis can continue to serve Victoria Station.

The new arrangements are as follows: The entire station forecourt, including the taxi rank and set down area will be closed and theranks in Wilton Road and Neathouse Place will be removed. The new point of the rankwill be in Hudson’s Place on the east side of Victoria Station with a new taxi feeder rankappointed in Bridge Place.

Taxis will be able to set down passengers on the east side of Wilton Road, with a desig-nated space in front of the rank in Hudson’s Place for taxis to drop off disabled passengers.

The taxi rank in Gillingham Street will be converted into a rest rank, but the taxi rank inVauxhall Bridge Road will be extended to the Queen Mother Sports Centre. The ‘AirDeck’ taxi rank at the station will continue to operate as normal. Taxi marshals will be at the new taxi rank during the first two weeks of operation to assistpassengers and drivers whilst the signage inside the station will be changed. Extending thetaxi rank in Vauxhall Bridge Road helps ensure that taxis can continue to serve the station,but retaining this space is dependent on Taxis not over-ranking or stopping on the zigzaglines behind the rank and not disrupting the traffic flow or compromising pedestrian safetyalong Vauxhall Bridge Road.

Parking and loading bays in the area must not used as illegal taxi ranks.

In this age of technology when the subject ofapps or the internet has moved into everydayconversation with children, let alone adults, thereare still many people out there who use comput-ers as glorified typewriters (remember them)without taking advantage of the many wondersavailable online – in this case, Call SignMagazine?

Alan,I feel the content of September’s editionwas lacking any content about ODRTS.Let's stop knocking Addison Lee, Hailo etcand be proactive and fight for the workback. It is quite obvious why customers arenot using us - it's all about price. Ofcourse I try to get as much info as I canand most of your questions have beenanswered at one time or another. school. In that case, and had we not lostWestminster, can you honestly say thatyou would run to Belgrave Square for ano run-in and no minimum trip toVictoria Station when there was cashwork about? Ok, let's assume the worstand that there was NO cash workaround, would you run from ParliamentSquare for that job? If your answer isyes, how many DaC drivers out of 10would also do that? I think we'd stillstruggle to cover it. I think the samething would apply to most no run-injobs.I suppose our drivers could take mat-

ters into their own hands and announcethat they were no longer going to puttheir meters on until the passenger gotin, but it wouldn't happen becausealthough the names were hidden fromme, last month I was shown a list of run-ins that drivers had after pushing theirarrival button. Some may have just for-gotten to announce that they hadarrived, but there were a few others whoconstantly arrived with more than the£4.20. Should we announce in the magthat some of our drivers were cheatingpassengers by overcharging on run-ins,bearing in mind that many now readCall Sign online (over 9000 regulars lasttime I looked). It could make us look likea bunch of crooks whereas the vastmajority are honest and would neverdeliberately do that. It's been writtenabout many times by Allan Evans - eventhough the number is minimal. Hesometimes almost begs! But that hasmade no difference. So what do I do?I'm not a BM and they don't discuss

their plans with me although I may hearabout them before most drivers, but I'veseen the scrubs on days when it's quietout. Credit rides from Kensington toHampstead scrubbed, from Nott Hill toW7 scrubbed, Selfridges to Stockwellscrubbed and West Ealing to Victoriascrubbed – although that was a cashride. And all four in the same lunchhour. Why? Obviously because theremust have been a bit of street workabout, so whereas you and I may careenough and invest some of our time totry and cover work to help get thoseaccounts to use us again, many driverswon't - and when it comes to feeding thefamily, I can't criticise them for lookingafter the family before DaC. But it isn't assimple as cutting run-ins/gratuities etcbecause you still have to cover the work.Then there are the drivers who take

the time to contact me about somethingthat has happened to them that theyconsider is worthy of going into themag. My philosophy has always beenthat the drivers are the most importantparts of the mag because without themthere is no Call Sign. So, yes, I always tryto involve them and I am usually happyto do so. Then there is Mailshot, which

gets more mail than all the other trademags added together. One of the nicestletters I have ever received in my 15years as Ed came from the boss of one ofour biggest accounts. He said that theopenness Call Sign was allowed to showwas one of DaC’s biggest strengths –even when we criticised ourselves. It’sthat same BoM that you say are hidingstuff, who trust me enough to allow meto put out the mag with no interferencewhatsoever.As for zonal booking, I like it when it's

busy, but when it's quiet does it reallymatter which system you use 'cos yourchances of a trip become less. If it wasthat good, then Mountview driverswouldn't be queuing up to leave withmany trying to come on here. Sadly,because it is currently so quiet, many ofthose then pass straight through andend up with no radio at all.Finally, what is it that you think Brian

is holding back? I can only compare himwith his equivalents at ComCab and RTGand they give their drivers no info what-soever...Ed

Wynns and losses!Hi Alan,In response to Howard Sales (Ex-A11) com-ments to the Wynns debate, I would just liketo add that when I was seeking a reason forthe EOBD (European on Board Diagnostics)light coming on, I didn’t feel there was a faultwith the cab itself as it ran well. But I sus-pected that the damp weather was the culpritwith the warning light also being more likelyto appear if I parked facing downhill! I believe this would benefitboth drivers and the Society alike. It wouldhelp drivers see exactly where the work wascoming from and allow them to make amore informed choice when decidingwhich rank to book onto. In turn, DaCwould benefit from better coverage as youwould have more drivers booking into thebusier postcodes. What is Hailo up to?Dear AlanOn reading Ian Skeels (J74) letter lastmonth and the way he explained the wayHailo works for the driver, I was surprisedto learn from the answer Brian gave thatnot only have £millions already been invest-ed in Hailo, but they are to borrow another£11 million to invest. I think we havealways assumed PH to be our biggestthreat, but as the three main circuits com-pete for accounts mainly on a level playingfield, PH has the price advantage. They mayhave secured and won some large accountsfrom the radio circuits, but I think that asbig as some of them are, they are not yet ina position to secure the amount of accountsheld by the big three. If our fleet has shrunkby 30% then I assume the other two circuitshave also had similar reductions. I hear thatHailo has some 6,000 drivers signed up.That number has to be close to the totalnumber of subscribers on all three circuits.As it appears the cost to join Hailo for thedriver is minimal, this may give them thepotential to recruit thousands of other taxidrivers. The question I have is this; whywhen after so many years no entrepreneurshave ever tried to start another radio circuitof the size of the main three, suddenly in arecession along comes Hailo investing £mil-lions in the cab trade. What do they knowor see in this trade to warrant such hugeinvestment? It can't be to nick a few jobsback from the minicabs, they have to haveanother angle. They do not have to buy ter-minals for the cabs, their costs cannot be ashigh as the circuits, so the only conclusionI can come up with is that they want themajor accounts held by the three main cir-cuits. They are black cabs, like us, their fleetwill outnumber the whole of the three cir-cuits and although the metered fare wouldprobably still apply, they have the advan-

tage of no arrival costs and that five minutesof free waiting. So my question is shouldwe be worried and do we have a plan B?Ian S. But I canprobably answer the rest of your letter.Are they after our accounts? Well I don’tsuppose they would turn them away, butfirstly they don’t do pre-bookings andeven if they could, they would nevercover any work dispatched 12 minutesbefore the booked time with no run-inand with the driver not even being ableto put his meter on for a further fiveminutes when he gets there and havingto pay 10% for the privilege! And what ifit only went round the corner for afiver? Nope, their niche is taxi work dur-ing a recession when drivers are happyjust to put their meters on. You call ‘noarrival costs and 5 minute free waiting’an advantage, but it’s only that so longas drivers are prepared to do it and paythe 10% on top. And that will be until itgets busier, as it’s starting to get now –and sure enough, Hailo’s coverage attimes hasn’t been too good. Then onto why are they doing it?

Unsurprisingly, it isn’t for the driver’sbenefit, it’s to make money! Hailo co-founder, Jay Bregman, originally co-founded online minicab companyeCourier and after several years, he soldhis stake and moved into Apps. MrBregman was recently asked if he wouldever consider selling his Hailo stake? Hisresponse was that he would do so atsome stage, using the expression sharedby many businessmen of ‘entering toexit’. In other words, make your moneyand move on. The problem, Ian, is thatthere is nothing wrong with that andthat’s how many operate in business. So the only question is whether, if and

when it gets busy again, will Hailo dri-vers pass street work or let DaC accountwork go to cover a no run-in and freewaiting time trip? That could be the timefor Mr Bregman to sell up. And one finalthing Ian, for around fifteen years I’vesaid on and off that I believe two of whatyou call the big three would merge. Willit ever happen? I don’t know but Iwouldn’t be surprised if the topic isn’tbroached in the radio circuit halls ofpower somewhere! ...Ed

£1 subs or a goldwatch?Hi AlanVery interesting article in the August CallSign regarding the DaC long-service awardsfor staff members. I understand theseawards are now an integral part of theoffice regime and occur twice yearly torecognise the longer serving members ofstaff. It does say something about Dial-a-Cab in an industry where large numbers ofstaff turnover is not only is expected, but isthe norm. I just feel it’s a pity that the samerecognition is not afforded to subscribers. Iunderstand that staff and subscribers aredifferent - one group being self-employedand one employed - but I'm betting thatthere are more long serving members assubscribers than employees?In the same August edition on page 10,

Keith Cain said: “You, the drivers, are themain workforce and the service you provideto our clients is not only of great signifi-cance, but forms a huge part of the wheelthat turns and makes this Society what is hasbecome today.”So why do longer serving members not

get some form of recognition? I know thatafter 30 years (that's one third of the aver-age lifespan) we get £1 subscriptions, but Ihave often wondered how the 30 years wasarrived at. Standard industry practice is 25years with a gold watch! I also acknowledgethat this represents a loss of revenue for theSociety and it would also be interesting tofind out how many are currently paying the£1 subs.Perhaps this may be the time to re-think

the rewards for subscribers; perhaps wecould start off at say 20 years with a 10%yearly reduction in subs, until the 30 yearsare reached, or perhaps after 25 years’ ser-vice a 20% reduction is given for 5 yearsuntil the 30 year mark is reached, or evenone or two free months per year? Anyway it's just a thought and I would

like to know what Board members thinkabout re-thinking driver rewards. Andbefore you ask, I have been on the circuitfor over 32 years, but only 28 as a sub-scriber. I also don’t think a suggestion giv-ing different drivers different rateswould go down too well because of theadmin involved. FROM YOUR ODRTS CHAIRMANAs I explained in the last newssheet, yourCommittee has decided that subscriptionswill remain at £7 per month for the presentand we would re-emphasise that you shouldcontinue to not put your meter on until yourpassenger has entered the taxi. This willensure that we build up a name as a good,trustworthy and reasonably priced organisa-tion. It will help to remove the myth thattaxis are the form of transport used by theupper class only.

Our aim must be to get everyone to usetaxis. That means our prices must be reason-able, while at the same time our passengers

must realise that although there is a differ-ence between ourselves and number 653London Transport trolleybus, the difference isnot huge and the extra is well worth paying.

We also have advertising cards show-ing the cost of some longer jobs. Pleasedo not charge more than these prices asthe passenger may pay on that occasion,but will not phone again. As an exam-ple, there is London Airport for £2,Gatwick Airport for £3.7s.6d and theRoyal Docks for £1.7s.6d.

Our dispatcher, Mr Defries (D03), hascomplained that some drivers are usingprofanities over the air and on oneoccasion a female telephonist overheardthe driver. This is unacceptable and I amasking you to remember who we are.

If any of your passengers enquire,yes, we still are members of theHolidays and Travel Association. We

feel that the mentionswe get from beingmembers outweighthe cost.
