The Australian Breastfeeding Association (ABA) 2014 National Conference Program Committee
invites the submission of abstracts for consideration for small group discussions, poster
presentations and workshops at the ABA 2014 Liquid Gold national conference. This conference will
be held in Melbourne on 1–3 August 2014 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Liquid Gold will celebrate the contribution to breastfeeding research, information and support in
Australia and around the world over the last 50 years and the change this has made to breastfeeding
practices thereby having a positive effect on breastfeeding rates in our country.
Abstract Deadline Dates
Abstract submission opens: October 2013
Deadline for abstract submissions: 10 January 2014
Authors notified of abstract acceptance: 28th February 2014
Author registration deadline: 30th April 2014
Small group discussions: 20–30 minutes
Presentation time for papers will be 20–30 minutes depending on programming format. Presenters
will have around 15–20 minutes for presentation and 5–10 minutes for questions/discussion.
Presenters are reminded that some of the best learning happens during discussion and are requested
to ensure that they manage the length of their presentations to suit this timeframe.
Poster presentations: displayed in the poster display area
Posters involve a short, visual presentation of the major focus, issues of concern, methods, findings
and conclusions of the presentation. Posters allow all conference delegates to be reached and are
particularly well-suited to informal and in-depth interaction about the topic. Posters will be
displayed in a specific area where conference delegates can examine the poster at any time and
discuss it with the presenter at an allocated time. Time will be made available during the
conference to promote the posters and indicate the availability of poster presenters.
Workshops: 45, 60 or 90 minutes
Presentation time for workshops will be either 45, 60, or 90 minutes depending on programming
format. A workshop should seek to facilitate and engage discussion with the participants.
Notification of acceptance
Notification of acceptance will be sent via the email address provided to the submitting author as
per the deadline dates listed above.

Summary of submission instructions
Please read through the following instructions listed below before preparing your submission.
Step 1: Read the ‘general policies and requirements’ for the submission of abstracts.
Step 2: Write your abstract following the ‘abstract format and layout guidelines’.
Step 3: Write an ‘ethical statement’ which you will submit with your abstract.
Step 4: Complete your abstract using the information below. Save as a .doc document to your
computer.
Please note: Each abstract must not exceed a 250-word limit. The word limit relates only to the
text of the abstract and does not include title, authors and institutions.
Step 5: Each author is to write a short biography (up to 150 words) which you will submit
with your abstract.

General policies and requirements
All abstracts must be original work.
Submission acknowledges consent to publication of the abstract in the conference proceedings
publication — Liquid Gold.
The presenting author will be required to register for the conference in order to ensure their
abstract(s) is included in the final program. Deadline for presenting author registration is 30
April 2014.

All abstracts must be prepared according to the guidelines provided.
The conference managers will not be held responsible for abstract submissions not received via
email or for submission errors caused by internet service outages, hardware or software delays,
power outages or unforeseen events.
The ABA program committee may reallocate a presentation type on the basis of time, space
available and applicability to the conference themes.
Abstract guidelines and layout
The abstract title should be Arial font 12pt in title case (initial capital/lower case, not in
capitals), bold and at the top of the abstract.
Provide each author’s institution, city and country in italics underneath the author list.
Authors who wish to indicate multiple organisational affiliations should do so using superscript
numbers to indicate the author’s institution followed by city and country (in this order) Do not
include degrees or professional titles (eg Dr, Prof, etc). See example below.
The name of the presenting author in each abstract is to be bolded. See example below.
Provide the email address of the presenting author. See example below.

Small group discussion / poster presentation / workshop
The abstract body text must be font type Arial font, 10pt, with single line spacing.
Sub-headings must be font type Arial font, 10pt, and should be in title case (initial capital/lower
case, not in capitals) and bold.
Each abstract body text should be no more than 250 words and should clearly and concisely
summarise the CONTENT of the presentation, identify questions or issues addressed and
outline the results or conclusions.
All information should be presented in a clear and concise manner using headings where
possible eg Abstract A: Introduction/Aims, Design/Methods, Results, Discussion/Conclusions or
Abstract B: Issues, Approach, Key Findings, Implications and Conclusion. The abstract should
include any relevant data.
Abstracts must be free of typographical and grammatical errors.
Standard abbreviations may be used for common terms only. Otherwise, any abbreviation should
be given in brackets after the first full use of the word. Abbreviations may be used in the title,
provided the name in full is outlined in the body of the abstract.
Each author must provide a short biography (up to 150 words) with your submission.
Ethical statement
Submitting authors are required to submit a statement that outlines important declarations in
regards to funding, project support and publishing for your abstract. Authors are required to submit
this ethical statement with their abstract(s). It is a requirement that each submitted abstract has an
associated declaration provided with the abstract.
Please note: If you do not have any declarations to make regarding your abstract(s) you are still
required to include an ethical statement stating ‘nothing to declare’.
