The cabinet of dr-Caligari Review

Twisted sets, twisted characters and a whole range slow action packed sequences,A story of a Man who tells a story about a man with a unique Cabinet with asomnambulist (sleepwalker) who can tell your future (when woken) but when someone is

told they will die before dawn! The townspeople get suspicious and keep a close watchfor his next move.

Its abstract set of painted card, its unusually decorative intertitles and method ofstorytelling (Williams, 2011) Really shows the unique way of showing backgrounds inthe most simple of form, for example, you can read a word almost every time as long asyou have the first and last letter, and you mix every letter within the middle, this methodof cardboard cut-outs is based on the same principle. The story can still be told without adescriptive background, and cutting to the chase of understanding the abstract storylineshowing how you dont need the background environment you just need the storyline andcharacters to perform.

Within the film there are so many dream-like aspects, even the envrionment being one,but key within acting, and dramatic twists and odd storylines within stories, and irrationalchanges of decision and movement and location, such as the same sets being used overand over to show tthe movement of one corner, or some stairs to emphasise the matter ofglimpses of reality within a dream of subconsious, He is making a film of delusions anddeceptive appearances, about madmen and murder (Elbert, 2009)

By the end of Caligari, it's obvious that emerging ideas in psychology and psychoanalysishad a heavy influence on the plot (Bastian,2000) due to the abnormal views andconstructive sub stories within the story and the odd feeling of emotion the viewer getsby watching each character and you start feeling for the sleepwalker due to having nocontrol and then realising he is nothing but a normal person with feelings and emotionsthat build up and results in monsterous movements.
