THREE WAY PARENT / TEACHER / STUDENT INTERVIEWS – August 1st and 2nd

Don’t forget interviews are being held this week. Bring a jacket, it will be cold!

Please aim to be on time. If you can’t make an appointment then please email your child’s teacher to organise an

alternate time. Interviews provide staff an opportunity to provide feedback on your child’s learning but, more

importantly it lets students share their learning and receive feedback. Emails were shared when an interview time was

booked. We will not be sending home any further information about interview times.

STAFFING CHANGES

Principal John’s on leave from Friday 28/7 until Wednesday 23/8 (off to a conference in Azerbaijan). Sandra will

be Principal for these 3 weeks.

Deputy Congratulations to Teresa Marshall who has been appointed as our Deputy Principal for these 3 weeks.

Teresa will continue to be the contact for all parents of students with disabilities in the school.

LC Coordinator Barbara Bayly will continue to lead the team in our Learning Centre for term three.

LC Teacher Linda Burrow has been appointed to our Learning Centre as a teacher for this term. Linda will start next

Monday. Linda comes to KPPS from Eyre Peninsula having worked in a variety of schools and units for

many years. Please welcome Linda to our school.

WOOLWORTHS EARN and LEARN

The program runs from 26th July to 19th September 2017. Stickers can be dropped off at the front office or placed in our collection box which is located at Woolworths Findon. Stickers collected will earn valuable points that can be used to get resources for the school.

FURNITURE

Over the next few weeks, we will be giving away various furniture pieces including desks, tables and chairs. These will be temporarily stored (for a week or two only) behind the shed on our Western Boundary (near Collins Reserve). Help yourself to any items you want. Anything not claimed will be donated or disposed of.

MUSIC NEWS

Congratulations to Selena Rm7, Pia Rm11, Aleira Rm11 and Edison Rm11 for passing their Piano AMEB Music Exams with High Distinction (A+) or Honours (A). They all worked so hard and deserve the fantastic grade! Tanya Welsh Piano Teacher

Connected Curriculum Term 3 Launch Assembly

Sherlock Holmes (aka guest CCT presenter Sean) arrived with a

crash on board his time machine and helped the Connected

Curriculum team work with students from all year levels to

work out clues and questions to determine this term’s whole

school big question ‘ Why does the universe work?’

Contestants from Foundation to Year 7 followed clues to

uncover a key question from a solar system display.

They then viewed video clips researched by the

Connected Curriculum team to try and answer questions

Devised by the team such as: ‘How do daily changes affect

our life on Earth?’, ‘ How do we use Earth’s resources?’

‘Why is Earth affected by seasons?’, and ‘Where is the

Earth in the solar system?’

There were some amusing insights and summaries provided by

Sherlock to help the school along the way.

2017 M&S FEES 60 FAMILIES STILL HAVE OUTSTANDING M&S SCHOOL FEES!

Statements were sent home last term. Please pay outstanding amounts as soon as possible or make arrangements for a Payment Plan. Payments Plans must be in writing and signed. Please contact Andrea in the front office if you have any questions or to arrange a direct debit for payment of fees.

Outstanding M&S Fees will be sent to the DECD Recoveries team who will legally pursue the fees.

SPORTS NEWS Netball Our Under 9 will continue at St Clair until Wednesday 23rd August (week 5) and our under 11s until Thursday 24th August. They have decided not to continue at another venue this year and will look at other options for 2018. The last game for our Under 13s at St Clair will be Thursday 24th August. They will continue at Port Adelaide Recreation Centre, playing Monday nights, start date to be confirmed. Special thanks to our coaches Emma McLaren, Kylie Smith, Karen Mitchell and Lisa Mestrovic.

Entertainment Books This year we have decided to sell the Entertainment Books via the digital method only. Books will not be handed out at school and instead you will receive it electronically on your phone/tablet via the downloadable app. $14 from every sale goes back to our school fundraising.

LIBRARY NEWS

Congratulations to all the students who have already completed the Premier’s Reading Challenge for 2017.

It is not too late to complete reading 12 books, recording the titles on the PRC record sheet and handing to Ms Burrow

in the library. Students in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 classes will do this with their teachers, but are encouraged to

complete a record sheet independently as well. From Year 3 up students need to complete a PRC sheet independently.

Students in years 3-7 are continuing to use the Scholastic Literacy Zone Lexile program to monitor their independent

reading. Together they have completed quizzes indicating they have read a combined total of over 33 million words!

Students earn points on the Lexile program and prizes will be awarded in term 4 for students who have the most points.

Students can also earn points by completing a Reader Response Sheet if the book does not have a quiz.

Term 3

There will be a Book Fair in the Library from 11:00 am Thursday August 3rd to 4 pm Wednesday August 9th. Students

will visit in classes and make wish lists. Parents are welcome to come and visit before and after school.

Book Week August 20-26th – ‘Escape to Everywhere’

The theme for Book Week this year is Escape to Everywhere. There will be a dress up parade on Thursday 24th of

August from 9 to 9:30am. Everyone is invited to come dressed up as a Book Character or a person from a place you

escaped to while reading a book and bring a copy of that book along.

SPECIALIST TEACHERS JOY PROJECT

How does our Joy Project fit into the curriculum? We can certainly align aspects of the project to the Health & Physical

Education curriculum, or the General Capabilities. But, more importantly, last year DECD launched a revised Wellbeing

for Learning and Life framework – Designed for building resilience and wellbeing in children and young people. It’s all

about Engaging, Inspiring and Empowering – all key philosophies of our Joy Project. A copy of the framework is

attached with the KPPS Update.

PERFORMING ARTS

F-2

Performing Art’s this term will focus on emotional responses and characterisation by exploring how facial expression

and movement create meaning and tell a story. Students will engage in a range of real-life scenarios to inspire

emotional responses and create imaginative situations, such as the joy of a birthday party or the fear of going to the

dentist. This allows students to explore different emotions and how others may be feeling, fitting into the connected

curriculum theme of how the universe works. Students will improve personal and social competence while working

collaboratively for different improvisational tasks. The second half of the term is focused on twisted fairy tales,

exploring differing narrative perspectives of known fairy-tale characters and create empathetic understanding when

they can put themselves in someone else's shoes.

P1, P2, P3

Through character, development students will recognise individual emotional responses and those of others when

creating dramatic scenes based on the theme of bullying. They will take on the different roles of the bully, the bystander

and the brave, by trialling the use of language and expression each type of person would exhibit. Through

improvisation techniques, they will derive small group skits based on a bullying situation. They will then create an anti-

bullying campaign to influence the school community. This falls into the connected curriculum theme of ‘How does the

universe work?’ by looking at how we can positively influence the way relate to one another.

Rm 10, Rm 11, Rm 12

Students will explore dramatic action and characterisation through improvisations and scripted drama based on the

theme of outer space. Using the Magic School Buses “Lost in outer space” as a stimulus, students will trial different

ways to move and react as a character not only on the bus in Ms Fizzle’s class but also the situations they find

themselves in outer space and when visiting the planets. This connects their learning to the Earth and Space Science

curriculum and the broader context of the connected curriculum question, ‘How does the Universe Work?’

Rm 7, Rm 8, Rm 9

In performing Arts, students will be collaborating to create a drama play based on the stimulus ‘A vacation to Mars.’

Through the process of improvisation, planning and rehearsing dramatic action and using feedback and evaluation, they

will work toward creating sustained dramatic situations. During this, they will develop characterisation and

performance techniques consistent with the notion of what life would be like on Mars and linking the connected

curriculum for term 3.

JAPANESE

In the Nihongo Room, term three will be as busy as usual. Please keep your eye on our newsletters so you know what

we have been up to!

Our Cross Curriculum Big Question “Why Does the Universe Work?” will focus on why Japanese society works. We will

explore why such a large population in such a small geographical space can exist in harmony – and compare that to our

lives in Australia.

Foundation students will continue to work on:- introducing themselves to others; recognising the sounds and rhythms

of spoken Japanese; locating information in simple texts; conveying factual information about themselves; translating

Japanese words and phrases into English - and vice versa - and creating simple bilingual texts. We will focus on our

membership of groups, such as our families and classes, as part of society.

Year 1-2 students will work on:- conveying factual information about sustainability/wastefulness; creating simple

bilingual texts; translating words and familiar phrases from Japanese into English and vice versa, noticing how some

words are shared between Japanese and English; understanding the structure of basic sentences in Japanese and

recognising and copying some hiragana and a few high-frequency kanji. We will focus on wastefulness in both Japan and

Australia, and the impact that this can have on the society that we live in. We will be using the picture book “Mottainai

Grandma” as the basis of our learning.

PRIMARY YEARS students will work on:- interacting with others to exchange information about themselves; showing

respect for others; locating information in written/spoken/digital texts; interpreting and explaining simple interactions

in Japanese, noticing linguistic/cultural features; noticing what is similar/different to our own language and culture

when interacting in Japanese in different contexts and situations; noticing how ways of communicating and behaving

reflect identity and relationships; understanding that language varies according to the age/relationship/situation of

those using it. We will be expanding our ability to introduce ourselves to others based on a big book written about our

favourite movie character, Totoro.

MIDDLE YEARS students will work on:- showing interest in and respect for others; conveying information on specific

topics using oral/digital presentations; describing and giving opinions about characters and events; identifying cultural

elements; explaining aspects of spoken and non-verbal communication in Japanese interactions; recognising some

single and whole word katakana; developing the ability to use hiragana/kanji in a single text; understanding that

different ways of using Japanese language shape and reflect different relationships, (formal/informal). We will focus on

Japanese yurukyara (mascots), designing and creating a mascot for a local place that is special to us. We will be able to

confidently introduce and describe our mascot to others.

CULTURAL FOCUS: All students will learn about the events of Hiroshima Day, focussing on stories about this historical

event and the impact that it has had on the Peace Movement around the world. We will be folding paper cranes in a

joint project with West Beach and Mawson Lakes Primary Schools. Once we have 1000 paper cranes we will be

dedicating them to the Children’s Peace Monument in Hiroshima on behalf of all of our students. This has become a

tradition for KPPS, something we should all be very proud of, as we make our own small contribution to PEACE.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION

I offer 45 minute sessions once a week with most of our F-5 classes, often in 3 week blocks to reinforce individual sport skills. I also work with class teachers, combining our PE programs to practise these skills. And I always encourage children to enjoy some ‘PE homework ’ with family. Can you help? First up, I’ll finish off the indoor scooter hockey block begun late last term with all classes. And introduce indoor long stick hockey to our older students. I’ll then run a 3 week foot skills block as we continue our association with Glenelg FC who’ll offer football clinics mid term. I’ve organised a 4 week block of soccer clinics for some of our year 2-4 classes with Emanuel Pais from State Soccer and a female coach from Adelaide United, and I’ll dovetail my soccer lessons into these clinics to reinforce skills. Of course, as Sports Day approaches, we’ll practise related events: high jump, long jump, targets, sprints, relays etc. I’ll be on Long Service Leave in week 3 and 4, but have organised David Krieg with his PE skills to take over my role while I’m away.
