Writing

The writing program at RDES is focused on teaching students how to develop real world writing pieces in a workshop model process. Students develop ideas for opinion pieces, writing to persuade the reader of their point of view. Students also write to inform the reader of a topic. ON a daily basis, students write about their learning. These valuable writing tasks and processes teach ongoing skills students will be able to apply in the future.

6th Grade Transition Night: April 16th @ 6pm-7pm

Elementary students will be visiting WJMS the week of April 13, with their 5th grade class (students only). They will receive transition and scheduling information at this time which they will bring home to share with parents. All parents are invited to attend a transition meeting, scheduled for Thursday, April 16th at WJMS. Counselors will talk about general transition concerns and answer questions regarding scheduling classes. We hope to see you there!

Health Flash

Eating Better: For Children and Families

• Start the day with a healthy breakfast. It refuels your body and gives you energy for the day.

• Let kids help plan one meal each week and eat together as often as possible.

• Eat slowly. It takes 20 minutes for your brain to register that you are full.

• Eat more vegetables and fresh fruits. Aim for a total of 2 cups of fruit and 2 1/2 cups of vegetables every day.

• Eat more whole grains (e.g., oats, brown rice, rye, crackers, whole-wheat pasta). Try to eat at least 3 ounces of whole grains every day.

• Drink plenty of fluids. Choose water, low-fat or nonfat milk and low calorie or diet beverages.

• Serve a variety of foods

Spring BreakWe have been working hard all day,we just need some time to play.We get to rest away from school, and take a break from all the rules.Do you think you’ll go away?Or just rest at home and play?

Page 4: Calendar - Kentucky Department of Education News/RDES... · 2019. 7. 10. · Library News Mark your calendar! The book fair will be at RDES on April 20th-24th. We will also be hosting

by Kathy T. Fields

School-based decision making (SBDM) councils

present an incredible opportunity for parents to become

involved in their child’s school and to initiate positive

change, improving the educational experience for all

students. SBDM councils have school-level authority

to make impactful decisions involving curriculum,

instruction, budget, personnel, and scheduling, as well as

responsibility for facility-management and student-related

issues. School principals,

along with parent and

teacher representatives

elected to serve on the

council by their respective

peers, are tasked with

meeting the needs of each

and every student.

SBDM council parent representative elections will

take place in most of our schools this month or next

and as outlined by Kentucky law, the elections will be

conducted by the largest parent organization in the school.

As a parent, your vote has the potential to dramatically

impact your child’s education, as those elected will share

in policy decisions that affect many aspects of student

learning. As stakeholders in our district, you have the

right, as well as the responsibility, to be informed about

the candidates and their views and to select those who

will best represent not only your child’s interests, but who

will also serve the needs of every student in your child’s

school.

Participating in our SBDM elections is crucial, but

there are also other ways that you can become involved.

Communicate with the parent council members; they

represent you! Share feedback and your views on the

important decisions that they face. You might also

consider volunteering as a committee member. All

schools have committees that work on specific issues

including curriculum, discipline, and facilities. These

groups make reports

and recommendations

to the SBDM council

for policy consideration

and provide a way for

you to become involved

on issues that are of

particular interest to you.

Or how about running for the SBDM council? Parents

can nominate themselves or be nominated by someone at

the school. Check with your child’s school for election

information or contact your school principal with further

questions.

Please know that you can make a difference in your

child’s education. Decades of research studies show

that when parents are involved, students have increased

motivation, improved self-esteem, better attendance and

higher grades. When schools and families work together

to support learning, everyone benefits: parents become

empowered, teacher morale improves, schools are more

effective and communities grow stronger. And, most

importantly, students perform better in school and in life.

SBDM Councils – School-Based, Student-Centered

As a parent, your vote has the potential to dramatically impact your child’s education, as those elected will share in policy decisions that

affect many aspects of student learning.
