Dearly beloved in Christ,

Greetings to you in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

We as a Church have a great responsibility to be continuously giving to the Lord andto others in need. Our God is a giving God and He has given us life, food, clothing, shelter and many other things. He has given us His only son Jesus Christ as ourSaviour. How do we call this? “Good Luck” or “God’s Grace?”

All blessings come from the Lord and we receive them and enjoy because of His graceupon us. When we forget to be reminded of “all His benefits” (Ps.103:2) upon us, wetend to call it “Good Luck” instead of praising and glorifying Him for His ‘goodness’.Don’t wait for a crisis to strike to remind you that your life is at stake without God’severyday keeping of you. Be thankful for the moment you live now and do it more bycounting each little blessing. Be reminded of God’s promises to keep you watchful inHis sovereign hands if you have to pass through tunnels and furnace. A thankful heartis fixed on God and serene, nothing disturbs it. The Joy of the Lord is its strength.

We are going to observe the Harvest Festival this month which is a celebration ofthankfulness to God for our resources and supplies of life all through the year. In theScripture we learn that God supplies our everyday needs and has appointed a day tocome before him with thanksgiving once a year. The form and order of observing it maydiffer from person to person and church to church but honoring God with gifts andofferings and entering in a joyful celebration before His throne is the constant whichScripture reminds us to keep.

I count it a grace and privilege to receive from the Lord the new ministry we have begunin Whitefield and the supporting ministry at the Berigai IEM field. Let us keep our spiritsglowing in reaching out to the needy people and sharing with them the life-giving powerof Christ. May we envision those days, through these ministries, when many people willbe delivered from the evil hands of Satan and receive the forgiveness and eternal joythat comes through Christ. Jesus died on the Cross for everyone in this world and roseagain to life showing his power over death and the devil. He is loving and gracious toshare his powers with everyone who would ask for the same. He said, “freely youreceived, freely give.” This is the reason we go forward extending the Lord’s ministryin another area of needy people.

Let us set apart this month to acknowledge God’s goodness in our lives and sincerelythank Him for them.

Grace be with you always.

Missionary Profile:Missionary Profile:Missionary Profile:Missionary Profile:Missionary Profile:Rev. Ragland – First English missionary to India

Thomas Gajetan Ragland was born inGibraltar on 26th April 1815, six monthsafter his father’s death. As he was bereftof his mother within a few years, he wasbrought up by his uncle Charles Birch inEngland. At Shropshire, through hischildhood, he worked hard at school onthe classics, obsessed with literature. At15, he left schooling and worked in hisuncle’s business for 5 years. But in June1837, he moved to Corpus Christi Collegewith a meager aim of B.A degree butbrilliantly ended up as fourth Wrangler

(rank) in the mathematical tripos (subject) at Cambridge and was absorbedas a Fellow. Shortly after being elected Fellow, he was ordained in 1841and became curate at Barnwell. At 30, he accepted God’s call to workabroad, and was received in Madras, India in 1846.

The first 6 months were spent in language study and getting to knowpeople. As Church Missionary Society (CMS), London considered him tobe the resident secretary at Madras, he was required to travel down southto get acquainted with the missionaries there. He travelled in a bullock cartto visit Dohnavur and the province of Travancore and mingled with them forthe next 6 months. Despite his useful work in Madras for 5 years, the innercraving to do direct mission work by communicating the gospel led him topropose a itinerating mission concept, whereby the missionary would haveclose interaction with souls, and without a penny of support from mission.By then, he had comprehended the general need of the Tinnevelly(Tirunelveli) and Travancore mission stations. But then, as per the norms ofhis college, he had to either do a Bachelor’s degree in Divinity or lose thefellowship. Despite his willingness to lose fellowship, the missions preferredhim to do B.D, and hence he was called back to England in 1852.

Book ReviewBook ReviewBook ReviewBook ReviewBook ReviewEvery believer struggles in the area ofaligning his/her thoughts in line withGod’s word which is an absolutenecessity. This book deals with this all-important subject. It is written in clear andsimple language. The chapters are briefand every point made is well explainedwith scriptures.

Joyce Meyer explains that the mind isthe battlefield and it is on this ground ofthe mind that we, believers will either winor lose the war that Satan has launched. She analyses the various conditions ofthe mind with the help of scriptures. Thishelps us to identify the mindsets that needattention and correction and thestrongholds that need to be pulled down. She goes on to explain thewilderness mentalities which keep us from enjoying our present journey.

Joyce Meyer emphasizes that right thinking is vital to victorious Christianliving and we need to study and work regularly in the areas of thoughts andwords. Quoting practical examples from her life, she drives home themessage that thinking about what we’re thinking about is very critical forevery believer.

Joyce Meyer presents the solution from the scripture - the renewal of our mind. She points out that we need to consciously cooperate with God to allow Himto reprogram our mind to have the mind of Christ. She asserts that discipliningourselves to spend quality time with Him in prayer, studying the Word andmeditating on His Word is a must for us to expect any change in the first place.

I would say, this book is a must read for every believer.

After completing B.D, and a brief time for restoring his health, he sailedback to India in 1853. After arriving at Madras, he set out to the Tirunelvelimission along with few native missionaries. His passion for gospel work isevident from his record of having preached daily, en route. He remainedas an itinerant preacher, in the northern Tirunelveli covering towns likeSrivilliputhur, Sattur and Sivakasi. Their missionary work had always begun, continued and ended in prayer. Till the rainy season of the year, they weremerely accommodated in Canvas and the missionary camp was at Sivakasi. As Ragland’s end drew near, God’s providence seemed to have preparedwell for him. During the winter of 1857, his health degraded considerably.Even at end times, his passion for mission did not subside, as evident fromone of his last letters to a friend in England, to pay a part of his fellowshiptowards Sarah Tucker Training School in Tirunelveli. At this time, he was asenior fellow of his college and had the option of living in the gift of thesociety, which he renounced for the cause of work in India. On 22nd October1858, his life came to rest at the young age of 43. He was laid to rest inthe compound where he lived in Sivakasi. One Englishman (Fenn) and afew Indian brothers stood together amazed in tears at his funeral. It isworthwhile to remind a statement of Rev. Ragland – “Of all plans forensuring success, the most certain is Christ’s own - becoming a cornof wheat, falling into the ground and dying”.

Thursday: Other Nations – Indonesia

Christianity in Indonesia is the country’s second-largest religion, after Islam. About 5.85% of thepopulation of Indonesia are Protestants andabout 3% are Catholics, as against roughly 85%Muslims.

Praise God for the sustained growth of theChurch over the last 50 years. Great peoplemovements to Christ have occurred among threeof the eight Java sub-groups and amongIndonesians of Chinese descent.

Pray for the government to act withrighteousness in honouring all peoples andcommunities; Indonesia’s history, especiallyrecently, is characterized by discrimination, exploitation and favouritism. Pray for Sumatra,Indonesia’s largest island, the largestunevangelised island in the world. More than25 million people there have never heard aboutJesus. The cities of Jakarta and Surabaya arekey cities in reaching the rest of Indonesia. Thecapital of Jakarta has at least 1,000 churchesand thousands of cell groups. Pray that thelives of Christians in these cities will be able tospiritually impact their whole country.

Pray that churches and key Christian agencieswill be able to provide solutions for post-tsunamiissues and the widespread poverty.

Wednesday: Our Nation & State - India,Karnataka

There are 25 million Christians in India whichis just below 3% of the total population of thecountry. There are parts of India as heavilyChristian as any part of Europe or America,e.g., Kerala, Goa, Mizoram. Kerala has thelargest number of Christians among the states. However, in North India, the Church isrepresented only by small and scatteredcommunities.

Karnataka had a relatively high number of anti-Christian attacks in 2009. More than 20churches have been devastated. In 2008,Karnataka had more than 100 anti-Christianattacks.

InspirationalInspirationalInspirationalInspirationalInspirationalIn 1883, a creative engineer named JohnRoebling was inspired by an idea to builda spectacular bridge connecting New Yorkwith the Long Island. However bridgebuilding experts throughout the worldthought that this was an impossible featand told Roebling to forget the idea.Roebling could not ignore the vision he hadin his mind. After much discussion andpersuasion he managed to convince his

son Washington, an upcoming engineer, that the bridge in fact could be built.

Working together for the first time, the father and son developed concepts ofhow it could be accomplished. With great excitement and inspiration, theyhired their crew and began to build their dream bridge. The project startedwell, but when it was only a few months underway, a tragic accident on thesite took the life of John Roebling. Washington was injured and left with somebrain damage, which resulted in him not being able to walk or talk or evenmove. Everyone felt that the project should be scrapped. In spite of hishandicap Washington was never discouraged and still had a burning desireto complete the bridge and his mind was still as sharp as ever.

He tried to pass on his enthusiasm to some of his friends, but they weretoo daunted by the task. Suddenly an idea hit him. All he could do wasmove one finger and he decided to make the best use of it. By moving this,he slowly developed a code of communication with his wife. He touchedhis wife’s arm with that finger, indicating to her that he wanted her to callthe engineers again. Then he used the same method of tapping her armto tell the engineers what to do. It seemed foolish but the project was underway again. For 13 years Washington tapped out his instructions with hisfinger, until the bridge was finally completed. Today the spectacular BrooklynBridge stands in all its glory as a tribute to the triumph of one man’sindomitable spirit and his determination not to be defeated by circumstances.

Children, when we face obstacles in our daily life, we shouldn’t be boggeddown by circumstances but be determined to overcome the hurdles byrelying on God and persevering till the end. God’s word says ‘Blessed isthe man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test,he will receive the crown of life’.

On August 21st, my sister and I had a serious allergicreaction called anaphylaxis to topical application ofa local anaesthetic. Praise God that we could getimmediate medical care and by His grace have a

second lease of life. We literally experienced the fact that each breath wetake is purely God's grace and mercy. For me personally, the period of illhealth that followed was a time to repent and draw closer to God, to renewmy commitment, to experience the joy of family relationships, to realise thatno aspiration in life without God in it is ever really worth it, and to rememberthat we live in a very needy land where so many thousands do not enjoy thebenefits and privileges we have and that as Christians we have a directresponsibility to serve our fellow countrymen. God help us live our life worthyof His calling - our possessions, our thoughts, and our every breath insurrender to His will.
