to your healthAugust clouds our heads with the thick of summer, but it is sand through our fingers. These cherished days will melt faster than you can lap up a final trip to the beach or a summer roadtrip. No matter, it is the fleeting nature of a season that enhances it’s value. Days fall upon days into tomorrow. Take the stack of what you’ve been up to, cut the deck into time spent well and time spent. For it is your precious time you have been gambling. If you’ve visited a few new places, explored a small town you normally just pass through or watched at least 10 sun-sets, 6 points. If you rode a bike or walked rather than driving, indulged in some form of exercise consistently, and ate fresh local produce, more points. If you tackled a few of those little loose ends that have been bugging you, read 3 books you had been longing to and took a week’s worth of afternoon naps under a shade tree you may hold a winning hand. We have chosen to dwell in the “land of pleasant living”, where good medicine surrounds us in clear blue skies and fresh air. The notion that we have a pile of summers to squander may or may not be true. The little things we do to make a day more worthwhile andfulfilling, are chips toward maintaining your health and happiness. In taking time-ultimately you will give yourself more. I think the wind is right for a little sail.... Dana Simson

Dedicated to: Dr. Jose Alvarado

who touched the lives of so many young patients and their families with his gentle manner and wise medical guidance.

We often make the mistake of treating children as “little adults”. Forgetting that Kids are Kids and they are works of art in progress. They will not have the years of insight and experience to pull from to reason out situations or know what is always best for them. In addition, depending on the age of the child their brain is not developed yet for higher lev-els of problem solving, reasoning, or understanding. This is seen when we try to negotiate with a toddler or adolescent. This scenario usually sets the stage for disaster. Parents are looking for an easy step-by-step guide to discipline their children effectively without the stress and chaos it can cause. Disciplining firmly and fairly so you can enjoy your children is every parent’s dream. I have used the 1,2,3, Magic- Managing Difficult Behavior in Children 2-12 for over 15 years with families. This program is designed by Dr. Thomas Phelan an internationally renowned expert and lecturer on child discipline and Attention Deficit Disorder. It’s easy and it works. Join me in one of the following workshops. Just in time to start the school year off more peacefully.

Believe it or not the summer is coming to a close. Long days at the beach, picnics, summer vacations, and fun day tripswill all be a memory as school begins. Yes, school begins August 30th for most students. Gearing up to get back into the swing of things can be a real challenge. Routine and structure are necessary ingredients for successfulmornings and school year. Sometimes just facing the everyday grind is hard, especially for children. Sifting through the arguing, yelling, whining, hitting, manipulation, crying, pouting and tantrums can wear you down emotionally and physically.

Tips for practicing good posture when standing: Hold your chest high. Keep your shoulders and back relaxed.Keep your knees relaxed, not locked. Keep your feet parallel, and bal-ance your weight evenly on both feet.By correcting bad postural habits, the body becomes more energy-efficient and therefore, more productive. Helpful exercises include:While sitting up, squeeze your shoulder blades back, hold for five seconds and repeat twice.Let your arms down to the side, lift your chest up, bring your wrists back and hold for five seconds. This is a good stretch for the shoulders, neck and wrist. Doing these stretches regularly can alleviate head-aches, soreness and prevent chronic neck and back pain.

Posture is the position in which you hold your body upright against gravity while standing, sitting or lying down. Good posture involves training your body to stand, walk, sit and lie in positions where the least strain is placed on supporting muscles and ligaments during movement or weight-bearing activities. Proper posture: * Keeps bones and joints in the correct alignment so that muscles are being used properly. * Helps decrease the abnormal wearing of joint surfaces that could result in arthritis. * Decreases the stress on the ligaments hold-ing the joints of the spine together. * Prevents the spine from becoming fixed in abnormal positions. * Prevents fatigue because muscles are being used more efficiently, allowing the body to use less energy. * Prevents strain or overuse problems. * Prevents backache and muscular pain. * Contributes to a good appearance.

BAYHEALTH

The Chesapeake Clean Water Act is the most important piece of Federal Bay legislation

since the 1972 Clean Water Act!s a v e t h e b a y

** It places legally enforceable, science-based limits on pollution from all sources.**It gives states pollution reduction standards to meet and allows them the flexibility to achieve those reductions as they best decide.

** It provides significant funding for technical assistance to farmers so they can implement pollution controls, as well as funding for stormwater pollution controls.** It encourages market-based approaches to pollution reduction, which could pro-vide an estimated $300 million annually to rural areas. (WASHINGTON, D.C.)—Chesapeake Bay Foundation President William C. Baker issued this statement following passage of the Chesapeake Clean Water and Ecosystem Restoration Act by the Senate Committee on the Environment and Public Works with strong bipartisan support. It will now move to consideration by the full Senate. “The Chesapeake Clean Water and Ecosystem Restoration Act is the most important legislation for Bay restoration in decades. It will replace the failed cleanup efforts of the past with accountability, milestones, and consequences for failure. The legislation affirms the science-based pollution limits that are being established by the EPA, the watershed states, and the District of Columbia through the judicially-ordered Total Maximum Daily Load, and allows each jurisdiction to decide how best to achieve those limits. It also authorizes generous new funding to help local jurisdic-tions attack the expensive task of reducing urban and suburban runoff and createsan important new source of revenue for farmers and landowners.”

p l e a s e

Page 39: Calendar Guide august 2010

“The environmental tragedy unfolding in the Gulf of Mexico under-scores the linkages between clean water and a healthy economy. Here in the Chesapeake Bay watershed we have our own variation of the Gulf oil spill tragedy—over 22 million pounds of polluting nitrogen, phosphorus, and sediment spewing into local rivers, streams, and the Bay every day.

“Senator Cardin has done extraordinary work in drafting strong, sub-stantive legislation that Senators from both parties and from every part of the nation can support. We commend the efforts of Senator Cardin and his committee colleagues to move this critical bill forward, and encourage the full Senate to act swiftly to pass S. 1816.”

Gardens are a healing world. Herbs and flowers lift your spirit, fresh produce is rewarding to pick and healthy to eat.

Sculpting patches of dirt into colorful and productive patches is creative. Bending and pulling to plant, weed and nurture is a sort of gardening yoga. The mind is focused on

task, you sweat, working toward a goal, finding pleasure in lengthening shoots-documented in fat blooms and handfuls

of fresh harvest. enough flower y chatter.

Bottomline: It is playing in the sandbox with benefits. Have fun with it.Two very dear friends of mine;

Karl & Bettie Zickrickinspired me both in my garden and art.

A large ceramic bowl I designed for themfor their 62th Anniversary is painted with a fishpond surrounded by the tall trees of a mature garden. It says around the rim-

Gardens, like love, are most enjoyable when nurtured consistently but with a sense of humor.Karl and Bettie live in a rambling mid-19th century Federal style home, bursting with

interesting things.Through the years the house

has spilled out into the yard in a series of outdoor rooms.

There are chandeliers hung in the bare peak of gazebos, living

rooms along flowerbeds and carpets of ivy.

They can sip a cocktail at dusk under a sunset sky and watch

deer wander into the back field.Tables of happy house plants line the brick

walkways weaving between gardens & a fishpond.

Many of the plants are in con-tainers so they can be brought

in during winter.Bettie & Karl contructed a

green house/ addition to one of the sheds reusing storm

windows for the southwall and ceiling. The great thing about

garden rooms is that they may be furnished with found items, things that have seen

better days and odd bits enjoying a new identity.

Eating outside makes any meal festive. Reading or napping in a shady corner turns a small

chunk of free-time into a vacation. Outdoor rooms evolve

with the season and weatheroffering tiny surprises- like

make a bird houseBIRDS EAT BUGS! Welcome them HOME!Craft stores sell inexpensive wooden bird houses that are fun to paint and easy to place. Along with the traditional method of hanging the house from a branch in a tree: use found items like driftwood, or mount the houses on poles made from young trees. Use “L” brackets to afix the house to the top of the pole. After you have dug a 3 foot deep hole with the post hole digger, have a helper hold the pole plum while youfill the hole, packing the dirt in tightly to keep the pole straight. See the finished “house on a stick” at right. About 1 hr to do.

Karl finds a nest of baby birds happily tucked away in one of his container gardens!

Established in 1686 by English settlers, the town of Snow Hill is named for a district in London. The small settlement located on the banks of the mysterious and dark Pocomoke River, where bald cypress trees lined its bank and colored its waters. The town grew and prospered as the waterway fostered commerce and farming flourished in the surrounding area. With a tem-perate climate and rich farm land, the area was known for its agriculture. In 1694, the town was designated a royal port by William and Mary of England. When the Houses of Assembly carved Worcester County out of Somerset County in 1742, Snow Hill was established as the county seat of government. Snow Hill was known as a town of gracious living where merchants, bank-ers, farmers and sea captains could show off their wealth and fine homes. Rich farmland, a beautiful river, a lively arts community and dar-ling downtown make Snowhill a treat to explore. Don’t miss the Julia A. Purnell Museum, and nearby Furnacetown Living Heritage Museum!Rent a canoe from Barry (Pocomoke Canoe Co.)and spend a lazy afternoon birdwatching.

Snow Hill’s 12th Annual Blessing of the Combines Celebration.

A festival to recognize the men and women who harvest our crops & the

machines that allow them to do it. It was determined that the first Saturday in August would afford the Farmers a tiny break just before the corn harvest to shine up their combines and drive them into town for the festivities. Townspeople decorate the town with fresh flowers and businesses open their doors. The fun begins on Green Street at 11:00 with live music and street activities. The Parade of Combines sets off down RT 12 to Green Street at 11:15, Children can visit a variety of animals at the Petting Barnyard; then hop aboard a wagon for the hay ride, along with chil-dren’s games and the popular Children’s Tractor Pull. There will be a Scales and Tales presentation from the Pocomoke River State Park. Crafts, and an Antique & Collectible Car/Truck Show. At 3:00 the combines leave Green Street, giving visitors ample time to head to John Walter Smith Park for an Antique Tractor Pull. For details 410-677-3473, or email [email protected]

Blood-Sucking Leeches Star in New Exhibit at Julia A. Purnell Museum Leeches were applied to patients in order to treat infections and fevers. Several leeches will have a new home in the exhibit tank. Most people know that leeches depend on blood for nourish-ment. However, the museum’s leeches will be feasting on blood from liver courtesy of the grocery store, rather than from live victims. Museum-goers are invited to attend the feedings to see the leeches in action. August 6 at 2pm. “Leeches & Lancets” will also feature a number of artifacts related to the practice of bloodletting and its historical origins. A large-screen microscope with prepared slides of blood and veins will also be part of this interactive and child-friendly exhibit. “The Purnell Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm and Sunday 1 pm to 4 pm. Admission is $2 for adults and $.50 for children. The new exhibit and feeding programs are included in the price of general admission. For more information contact the museum at (410) 632-0515.OUCH! Trying Sierra Celebration and Chimay Red made me realize there was great beer to be made/drink beyond the dominant light lager. That

moved me to homebrewing. Then research on the beer industry in the early 90’s convinced me I

could carve out an off-centered niche. what is your favorite part of the business?

My favorite days at work are those when I get to shovel out the 5-barrel mash tun at our pub. It means we are brewing a beer we have never brewed before. I love that feeling of exploring the unknown the most. The thing that is most

important to me about Dogfish Head is that we keep innovating and growing our passion

for and commitment to making unique, world-class beer. We plan to keep putting the where in Delaware and the mental in experimental.

above & beyondLa Merced An interview with Tina Perrottabackground: In March 2007, Dr. Vincent Perrotta, our son Christopher and Nancy Weller visited Nicaragua on a pastoral visit through our sister parish com-mittee at St. Francis de Sales in Salisbury. That summer Dr. Perrotta and I took our entire family down on a vacation and I further developed his vision and objectives with Dr. Dorianella Arguello Castillo, Dr. Sui, Jerry Seiro, Father Castro and The Ar-guello Family (our members of La Merced in Nicaragua). We then finalized plans for our first mission for the following January! Dr. Perrotta, Nancy Rodriguez Weller and myself are considered the Co-Founders of La Merced here stateside. How many missions have you done? This was La Merced’s 3rd mission to Nicaragua. We started at the Mascota Pediatric Hospital in Managua and then established a small procedure room at the Roberto Clemente Clinic in one of the poorest areas of Managua. This year we also established a Dental Clinic at the Roberto Clemente Clinic! Last fall we assisted the needy here in Salisbury as well. We delivered several cases of new mommy diaper bags and surgical gloves to area Women and Children’s Shelters.

Axel Casante, a 7 year old born with omphalocele, (intestines stick out of the belly due to a lack of de-velopment of the abdominal wall.) Doctors in Nicaragua were able to gradually push these organs back inside, but his weak adominal wall musculature required his mother to wrap him with a large band to hold the contents in. He was unable to play as young boys normally do. Drs. Pellegrino and Perrotta reconstructed the abdominal wall -

-sliding muscles around to provide him with normal musculature. His mother no longer needs to wrap him. In 6 weeks, he will be able to live and play normally! 9 days, 3 doctors & 22 volunteer staff-

Dr. Pellegrino operates on a patient while a sister waits for her turn.

How was everything structured- so folks could work together smoothly?“ Essentially, I applied the systems I utilized when I used to manage Dr. Perrotta’s practice here at home. Everyone worked VERY well together. I was especially sur-prised because of everyone’s diverse background. We had an electrician, contractor and electrical engineer as well as several high school and college students, a school teacher, cosmetologist, banker, 2 nurses, a pharmacist and a professional linguist. (Even photographer Cheryl Nemazie jumped in to assist when needed) Mornings were a little crazy processing all the patients. Working with community outreach, a school, Soup Kitchen, Vo Tech center and Physical Therapy Clinic there is always something for someone to do!” Who coordinates the mission/ what is involved?“It is a group effort. We have several meetings before the trip with many things that need to be accomplished. I am the Administrator and do most of the coordinating and organizing. Dr. Perrotta does the big-picture stuff, like recruiting the doctors and assistants, planning the schedule with the doctors down there and letting me know what equipment and supplies are needed. We are already accepting letters from individuals interested in going on our next trip. “

Dr. McCann examines a cerebral palsy patient in need of dental care. Translator Nancy Rodriguez-Weller is looking on.

La Merced clearly helps the communities you visit, how have your volunteers been impacted by their experience? For some like myself, it is life changing. For others it has been so enriching. The people of Nicaragua are the kindest, most gentle and grateful people we have ever met. The ones we serve truly have very little materially, but yet have so much spiritually. They would share their last piece of fruit with a total stranger, knowing that God will provide for the next day. This experience brings us all back to what is really important. Family and Friends! The Nicaraguan people show us a form of love and give us a feeling we cannot obtain any other way. How may the communities of the Eastern Shore assist la-merced?From a child saving his pennies to sponsor a child to large companies donating cases of supplies; anyone may contribute to this cause. Local donations to La Merced sponsored 18 pediatric surgical patients, 15 students, 10 clinical patients and 7 soup kitchen children! We were also able to assist the Physical Therapy Clinic to stay open for several months. Our supporters include hospitals, local doctors, Palenchar Physical Therapy Clinic, Rotary, Lions Club, etc... Nanticoke Memorial Hospital is our largest donor! Other donors include Chesapeake Surgery Center, the Center for Aesthetic Surgery, Pohanka Auto Group and some nearby religious communi-ties, like Rehoboth Methodist Church (in Berlin) and St. Francis De Sales Church (in Salisbury). Also, the doctors get their medical supply vendors to help out.

Ivan is a twelve-year-old boy with a giant hairy nevus on the left side of his face. The pain of daily ridicule from his friends was so intense that it ended up breaking his parents apart. We are in the process of removing the nevus in stages through a process called “tissue expansion.” This process can be very challenging on a twelve year old since he is in a stage of rapid growth. We expect Ivan to be completely free of the nevus within one year.

Anything you would add....I think it is important to add that we are 100% volunteer based. Everyone that goes on a trip pays their own way, raises money for La Merced and acquires donations of medi-cal supplies. We also have several volunteers here stateside who help all year round.

If you are interested in joining La Merced or making a

contribution, call 410 860-5581.
