6th Grade Newsletter

Language Arts:

We have been working on Exploring Textual Design. In this unit, students were

introduced to the idea that author's purpose influences the forms of writing and the text

structures used to convey the message. The novel choices for this unit include Locomotion by

Jacqueline Woodson and Seedfolks by Paul Fleischmann. Additional expository and persuasive

texts from newspapers and magazines are also used by students as they consider the variety of

structures and forms used in authentic writing.

We are currently working on our final unit, Imagining Other Worlds. In this final unit

study of the year, students will consider the unique characteristics of historical and science

fictions through self-selected, student-directed novel study reading groups. By focusing on the

author's craft of creating believable and socially relevant worlds in fictional texts, students will

connect and compare the characteristics of these two genres. Student research on topics

connected to literature settings is a focus area for this unit.

Social Studies/PACE:

Social studies and PACE students began the second semester investigating the achievements

and contributions of great Renaissance artists and thinkers, and then wrapping up our study of

European cultures with the World Wars.

Social Studies students will now learn about two cultural regions— Latin America and Africa—

and how the modern cultures of those areas have been influenced by European imperialism

and colonialism. Students will learn about the geography, economics, art, political history, and

current environmental and human rights issues of these regions, and will learn to analyze data

to distinguish between developing and industrialized nations.

The PACE students have begun the Conflict and Cooperation unit. They have investigated the

seven elements of conflict, learned about the World Wars, and will next examine events that

have led to international conflicts in the past. It is in this unit that we begin reading the novels that are

part of the 6th grade PACE curriculum. Both Iqbal and A Long Walk to Water examine the lives of

young adults in areas of the world where human rights and basic freedoms are not experienced by all

citizens.

Come by your student’s social studies or PACE classroom at Open House to admire the Cultural Quilts created by the 6th graders! Each

student selected a country to research, and then used that information to produce a visual representation of the culture of that country.

You will be impressed by our 6th graders’ hard work!

Science:

In science we are finishing our Ocean Unit and will start our four-day ocean CAP before Spring Break.

Over spring break would be an excellent time to start a new science spiral notebook-if you need to, as

we will start our Energy Unit when you return to Haggard and finish the year with our space unit.

Math:

We are so excited about our Chromebooks now in the math classrooms! We have so many fun and

exciting activities for your child in store. Please make sure to remind them of their responsibilities with

proper care and usage. We are currently studying our statistics portion of 6th grade math. After that,

we will begin our study of Geometry. Then, it will be on to focusing on our Financial Literacy portion

of the curriculum. Finally, we will be finishing out the year with another unit on Algebra. After spring

break, we will also be starting our prep for STAAR. Please make sure to stay on top of their math

skills and assignments. They can also use www.carnegie.pisd.edu as an additional supplement for

mastering skill sets. We look forward to finishing out the year strong!

7th GRADE

SCIENCE

Hello Haggard families! We just finished the unit with some fantastic labs. We covered everything

from plants to body systems! This next unit covers cells and contains many fun and engaging

labs. We will learn about genetics and adaptations! It should be super engaging and fun for all

students! We look forward to learning about how all organisms interact and survive in this crazy

planet we call Earth!

ENGLISH

Honors English

This past nine weeks, students in Honors English have explored the relationship between a character’s physical and personal emo-tional journey’s. So students could learn to recognize when and how authors craft this relationship in narrative writing, students began a book study of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien. During the course of this book study, students had the opportunity to apply their summarization skills in a new context by creating chapter summary quatrains. Quatrains are a type of poetry that features four line stanzas and a specific rhyming pattern. In addition to this, students also spent several weeks tracking the journey of Bilbo Baggins, the main character, and eponymous Hob-bit from which the title of the book gets its name. As we round out the current nine weeks, students will get to apply their learning from the past few weeks as they take part in a Socratic seminar over the book. A Socratic seminar is a student led but teacher guided formal discus-sion based on text evidence in which the students will discuss broad themes, issues, and open-ended questions related to The Hobbit. Look-ing forward to the fourth and final nine weeks grading period, students in Honors English will begin an exploration of mythology as a narrative craft. As part of this exploration, students will have the opportunity to read a selection of Greek and Roman myths as well as to begin the pro-cess of writing their own.

On-Level English

This past nine weeks, students in On-Level English have explored the relationship between a character’s physical and personal emo-tional journey’s through the text Crispin. As we round out the current nine weeks, students will get to apply their learning from the past few weeks as they create a poetry collection that is focused on the theme of physical an emotional journeys. As we dive into the fourth nine weeks, students will begin the exploration of mythology as a narrative craft and analyze the characteristics of a myth. As part of this explora-tion, students will have the opportunity to read a selection of Greek and Roman myths as well as to begin the process of writing their own

After spring break we will be getting all students further prepared to excel on STAAR. All 7th students will be taking the STAAR Writing test on April 10th. This will include one expository essay as well as a multiple choice section on grammar and revising and editing.

8th Grade Eagle’s Tales

Science

This nine weeks students have been learning about physics. We have discussed Newton’s Laws of Motion and explored the world of speed, acceleration, and velocity. Students have been calculating equations for these principles and relating them to the real world. As we move into the next nine weeks, students will begin studying weather and atmosphere. We have already begun learning about the different layers of the Earth’s atmosphere and why each is important. A special congratulations goes out to Brad Blackwell who was the only Haggard student who advanced to the state science fair in San Antonio!

Math 8 /Honors Algebra

Math is excited to have classroom access to Chromebooks!! We will be utilizing web-based

learning tools in conjunction with district curriculum and textbooks. Please continue to use our

Google classroom as communication and look for new activities posted.

We are getting closer to our math STAAR testing. Math 8 students will take their STAAR math

test in April and Algebra students will take their STAAR testing in May. We are proud of the

hard work our students have shown this year and we know they will be successful. Math 8 is

currently working on a geometry unit and Algebra is starting Quadratics. We are here to help in

tutorials most every day of the week.

U.S. History

During the 3rd Nine Weeks, 8th grade U.S. History students learned about the first five

presidents, and why these leaders were important to a developing country. Students analyzed

the various elements of domestic growth and foreign disputes of the early 1800’s. Students

learned the causes that eventually led America to war with England (again) in 1812. Sometimes

referred to as the “forgotten war,” students now know that it was during this war that our

national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner, was written. We concluded this unit with a project

that allowed students to compare and contrast the various elements of each president and

their term(s). The next unit focused on western expansion and development of the continental

United States. As America moved west to reach “from sea to shining sea,” we analyzed the

various conflicts that were encountered along the way. Students investigated the effects that

the Industrial Revolution had on the American way of life, and how this period of growth would

forever change the way that America operated. We also began to examine some of the causes

that eventually tore America apart and ushered in the Civil War.

English

English 8 and English 8 Honors students are wrapping up their study of conflict in literature and in the world. While realizing that conflict is not always physical or negative, students have been analyzing the impact of conflict and decisions on characters and plot development of a text. This study will lead up right into our final unit of the year - Powerful Young Voices. In our last unit, students will use what they have come to discover about characterization, tone, mood, metaphors, and conflict to write about things that are moving to them. We will study famous (and not-so-famous) young voices, like S.E. Hinton and Anne Frank, as well as writings from Teen Ink books, to define and mimic new writing genres and speak our minds. This unit prepares students to leave their middle school time with a solid portfolio that really reflects what they believe and who they are. Spanish

In Spanish 8 we are currently learning about school schedules, teachers, classes and school sup-

plies. The next lesson is school people and places in the school. We will finish the school unit with ex-

tracurricular activities and clubs in the school. The main learning targets in Spanish 8 are focused on

actions that make a responsible student and good example in school.

Haggard Eagle Track and Field 7th and 8th grades

About 90 athletes are competing on the 4 track and field teams this year for Haggard!

The first track meet (8th grade only) was cancelled due to the senior high track not being

ready. There are 3 more meets to come. All of our track meets are held at Kimbrough

Stadium in Murphy at 700 North Murphy Rd.

We have our workouts in the morning from 7:30 to 8:05, so it is important that you have

a copy of the track practices! Since we are running on the grass fields, it is important for

athletes to have separate shoes for track (older ones, preferably) and for school. Our

fields are wet and muddy at times.

The track and field season is finishing the season with the City Meet on April 16-17 at

Kimbrough Stadium in Murphy.

The coaching staff is proud that these athletes came out to better themselves and

compete for our school. It has been shown that by competing in track and field, the

athletes will improve their speed and agility which are useful in all other sports! In

addition, the different events force the athletes to use other muscle groups, thereby

promoting better overall body health. It is important for athletes to compete in more than

just one sport.

Thanks for allowing your student to compete in track and field this year at Haggard

Middle School!
