This year’s Social Justice Statement is titled For Those Who've Come Across the Seas: Justice for refugees and asylum seekers. This Statement was developed in response to the longstanding divisions in Australian society over asylum seekers, particularly those who have arrived by sea. Vincent Long Van Nguyen DD, Auxiliary Bishop of Melbourne and Chairman of the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council wrote in the Statement; “Every boat we intercept, every child we detain, is a reminder that we can be part of the problem or part of the solution. While we try to bar our doors, millions are fleeing and dying – Rohingyas, Syrians, Hazaras and Somalis, to name only a few.” The statement reminds all Australians of the need to welcome and comfort those who have fled here from terror and danger, and to live out the example of Jesus, who never turned his back on those who were lost or suffering. With such a strong emphasis on Social Justice and following our College motto of ‘Act Justly’ we are reminded that we also can be part of the solution. Below are some ideas of how we, as individuals, can make a difference. First, we can make sure that Australians understand the issues better. Quiet conversation and example are powerful tools for conversions. We can also support the organisations that work to help asylum seekers: organisations like the Society of St Vincent de Paul, Catholic Social Services, Jesuit Refugee Services, Asylum Seeker centres and many others. We can work within our parishes to ensure that they are welcoming places. Creating social events, organising or joining support networks, introducing refugees and hearing their stories: all these are ways in which we can recognise the humanity of those who have come in need of protection. Politicians need to know that we feel passionately about this issue, and not just at the ballot box, when we cast our vote. Writing to local members and ministers does have an effect, and can give encouragement to those in Parliament who also seek a better way. The Australian Catholic Social Justice Council distributes a Ten Steps leaflet that will include ways in which we can work to promote understanding and help such people in practical ways. Many dioceses have very active Justice and Peace offices that can make suggestions about practical steps you can take or organisations you can support. A WORD FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Students and Staff We celebrate Social Justice Sunday on 27th September. Year 12 Farewell Activities During this last week of Term 3 we have had a number of significant ceremonies to farewell our Year 12 students as they completed their last formal classes at the school. These ceremonies have included a Graduation Mass, a Year 12 Awards Ceremony, a Year 12 breakfast and a farewell assembly with the rest of the school community. This week the girls have finished their six years at St Joseph’s with maturity and dignity, demonstrating the characteristics of true MacKillop women. As the Year 12 cohort of 2015 leaves St Joseph’s we are very proud of the uniquely gifted young women they have become; young women who live life with compassion, respect, justice and hope. We are confident that they are young women who will make a difference in their world in the years to come. I would like to congratulate our Year 12 girls on the wonderful contributions they have made to the college and to wish them all the very best for their HSC preparation, for their HSC examinations and for life after school. Beginning of Term 4 Term 4 begins for all students on Tuesday 6th October, following the Labour Day Public Holiday on Monday 5th October. All students are to return in their summer uniform. The starting day of Term 4 will be Day 2 of the timetable. God bless and best wishes for the holiday period ahead. Tony McCudden Principal

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Term 3 has been a very busy term and much has been achieved – the Year 8 Reflection Day facilitated by our wonderful Year 10 Youth Ministry, the success of our individual and team sportswomen, The Voice of Ellie Drennan, girls in every year who stood up to make a difference or check that their friend was okay, submission of HSC major works, induction of new leaders, electives chosen by Year 8 and subjects by Year 10 to study in 2016 – to list a few. Students are looking forward to the holiday as are many, many teachers before we all ‘gear up’ for Term 4. Farewell Year 12 Year 12 students finished their final week of school in style with their farewell assembly on Thursday. We laughed at several stories about their journey from Year 7 when the College Leaders spoke on behalf of Year 12 and we enjoyed them singing the School Song for the last time. The Graduation Mass and awards presentation that followed on Thursday evening were moving and memorable and a wonderful way for the year group to celebrate their achievements. We

enjoyed their company very much and wish them every success in the future. The MacKillop Shield The MacKillop Shield is awarded to the house whose students earn the most points throughout the year which, for the purposes of this competition is defined by the leadership term of the Year 12 House Leaders (Term 4 the previous year to Term 3 in the current year). Students worked hard for their houses to earn merits, community service awards and house points for a variety of activities. Points are then tallied at the end of Term 3 to determine the winner of the MacKillop Shield to be presented at the Year 12 farewell assembly. Congratulations to Lonergan house, this year’s winner of the MacKillop Shield. Year 10 Yellow Bellied Glider project This amazing project in which Year 10 students from St Joseph’s and St Edwards’s mentor Year 4 students from Holy Cross Kincumber and St Patrick’s East Gosford to learn about the threatened Yellow Bellied Glider and how to create and protect its habitat in our local area. Congratulations to the mentors and to Mrs Barbara Moutray for her wonderful job as their team leader. The students involved in the project have been inspired and challenged in a variety of ways. We are so grateful to the educational team at Taronga Zoo and to colleagues from the Catholic Schools Office for putting this project together and for the style with which they led and managed our girls. Summer Uniform Students return to school in summer uniform. Please take advantage of the break to adjust skirt hem lengths and check that missing buttons on blouses are replaced. Details of the college uniform are printed on the website and in the student planner. We look forward to seeing all students on Tuesday 6th October focused and ready for a very successful final term. It is exciting because our new student leaders assume their positions. It is their opportunity to make a difference. Enjoy the holiday and stay safe.

including how to avoid making simple mistakes when responding to questions.

This year, HSC results will be delivered to students via email and text message from 6.00am on Wednesday 16 December 2015. Students will also be able to access their results at the same time via Students Online. During the HSC examination period, the Presiding Officer will give all students a “Student Details Form” to take home. This will show the email address and mobile phone BOSTES has for them, and explain how to update them if needed.

Congratulations to Year 12 2015 on completing thirteen years of schooling. Best wishes to all girls in achieving a personal best in every HSC examination. Year 11 Year 11 have now completed their Preliminary course examinations. The girls have responded to the challenges presented by these examinations in a mature manner. Year 11 students will be making decisions about their HSC patterns of study early next term. It is advised that the girls discuss any decisions about HSC course selection with their class teachers in the first instance. Details about the upcoming HSC information evening are:

The HSC 2016 information evening for all current Year 11 students and their parents will be held at the college on Wednesday 21st October 2015 starting at 6pm.

FROM THE LEADER OF LOTE Languages Japanese news Term 3 has been a busy term in the Japanese classroom. We have had some exciting events including

awards and a very special visit to our school. Credit awards in ‘Language Perfect’ World Championships 2015 Congratulations to Samantha J (Year 12), Abbey M (Year 9) and Tiernay S (Year 9) who all achieved a Credit Award in the Language Perfect World Championships. To gain this award these students outperformed more than 240,000 students, placing them in the top 20% of all competitors. ‘Language Perfect’ is an on-line learning site were students can compete with each other and are tested on their language skills, including reading, writing, listening and dictation. Language students at the college in Years 9 - 12 have been using ‘Language Perfect’ to consolidate their classroom learning and it is a pleasure to note that from next year the college will be able to offer the ‘Language Perfect’ program to students in Year 8 as well.

Visit from Japanese students During Week 6 students from Years 9 - 12 welcomed 23 Japanese students to the college for an afternoon of language and cultural fun. Sam J, Year 12, showcased her skills by welcoming the students and Isobel G-M, Year 11, questioned the students in Japanese about their impressions of Australia and Australian schools. All the students then joined together to play Australian and Japanese games. The afternoon finished with Japanese tea and some Aussie snacks the students had prepared. It was lovely to see all the girls really enjoying interacting with the Japanese students and

the impressive effort they made to use their Japanese language skills. Final lesson in Year 12 Japanese After 5 years of Japanese study Samantha J had her final Japanese lesson during Week 9. On behalf of all the students studying Japanese we wish her all the very

best for her HSC examination. がんばってサムさん! Samantha Andersen Japanese teacher FRANÇAIS news Term 3 was a busy 10 weeks for the Year 8 French students. In Week 5 we had a visitor to our French classes, Mr Richardson, a student teacher. The girls enjoyed having a French conversation with him and hearing a different French accent. The girls really showcased their knowledge of the language and were delighted to realise that they understood everything he said. The students had a busy few weeks preparing for their oral tasks which took place in Weeks 8 and 9 and further developing their French communication skills. As well, each student completed a French family tree and a speaking task which was an opportunity for the girls to speak in French about their families and their pets. The girls continue to improve their spoken French with beautiful accents! Each student performed her speech to an exceptionally high standard and I was very impressed with the colourful and vibrant family trees the girls presented. Bon courage les filles! During our visit to Alliance Française in Term 2 there was an opportunity for all the students to enter a Year 8 French Art competition. Holly I has submitted a very impressive piece of art with a French twist. She is competing with schools all over Sydney so the competition is high! Good luck Holly. Results in October. Watch this space! During Term 3 some students had the opportunity to visit St. Edward’s for a special French morning. The French quiz was definitely the favourite activity among the girls. This was a fun and exciting finish to our fantastic term studying French in Year 8. Looking forward to meeting my Year 9 French class next year. It’s sure to be an even more successful year in French in 2016. Maeve O’Dea French teacher

FROM THE PROJECT LEADER AT SJCC Year 10 Yellow Bellied Glider Project 2015 The Yellow Bellied Glider Project 2015 began at Taronga Zoo with the challenge to inspire the local community to help protect the endangered glider species. Twenty seven Year 10 students participated in the project this term and learned about the yellow bellied glider, threats to its survival, bush regeneration and Aboriginal perspectives. As well, they were trained to become fantastic mentors to Year 4 students from Holy Cross Kincumber and St Patrick’s East Gosford. They drove the success of this initiative and produced creative projects to raise community awareness. Their projects were showcased at expo days with community partners including local libraries, Cinema Paradiso Ettalong and Westpac Bank.

Thank you to Taronga Zoo and especially Catherine Judd, Learning Engagement Officer, Taronga Zoo for her organization of this project. Thanks also to the Catholic Schools Office, National Parks NSW, Community Environmental Network, Eco Logical Australia, Darkinjung, and Gosford City Council for their involvement, generosity and support. All students in the program have now become guardians and habitat experts for the endangered yellow bellied gliders. Their learning journey and more information can be viewed at http://projectyellowbelliedglider2015.weebly.com

This is the first team in St Joseph’s history to win the NSWCCC title so to go one step further and win the NSW champion school title is an outstanding achievement. Thanks to Drew Fenton from Gosford City Basketball for coaching the girls.

The team: Back row: Paris F, Nicole C, Bronte D, Emma B, Isabell B, Charlie E, Drew Fenton (coach) Front row: Kaylee W, Madison G, Jasmine F Congratulations also to Charlie E (Year 11) on her selection in the NSW All Schools basketball team to

The girls played students ranked among the top 300 open players in Australia and are the current world tennis team champions. Emma, Briahna, Breelyn and Teghan all played very strong tennis but were unfortunately beaten by a very highly ranked and well coached tennis team. Thank you to the parents for their help and support.

NSW All Schools tennis team finalists NETBALL St Joseph’s had four teams participate in the BBSSSA carnival at Pennant Hills in July. All teams qualified for the semi-finals with the open team reaching the final. Unfortunately they were defeated by St Peters in a tough and close final. Thank you to Ms Baxter and Mrs Grassi for coaching the teams and to Danielle M and Meagan S (Year 9) for coaching and umpiring the Year 7 team. In the NSWCCC championships at Penrith in August St Joseph’s entered three teams in the very tough championship division. Of the eight teams in each pool, only the top team progressed to a final. Unfortunately all teams missed out on the final despite playing excellent netball throughout the day. Thank you to Mrs Simpson and Ms Baxter for coaching the teams and to Chloe L, Madeline S-B and Paige C for umpiring.

BBSSSA athletics team OZTAG St Joseph’s were represented in all divisions at the recent central coast Oztag gala days. After winning all divisions last year we were unlucky with the open gala day falling during the Year 11 exam period meaning our Year 11 students were unavailable for selection. However the young girls who moved up to the open team did a fantastic job going through the whole day undefeated and winning the final 7-0. The Year 7/8 team were undefeated throughout the round games but lost a tough semi-final against Terrigal High School. The Year 9/10 team also were undefeated throughout the round games although they drew with GPCC and, as only one team proceeded to the finals round, they unfortunately missed out on a countback. Congratulations and well done to all students and thank you to Mrs Kelleher for her wonderful coaching efforts and her time given to the tough but fair selection trials and Mr McCudden for coaching the Year 9/10 team.
