Have your cake and stitch it too with this delicious in-the-hoop machine embroidery design! Stitch eachpanel separately, then assemble and stuff. Follow along with the instructions below!

Project Needs & Notes:

- 1/8 yard of white quilters cotton (for frosting)- 1/8 yard of tan quilters cotton (for inner cake)- 1/8 yard of pink quilters cotton (for filling)- Tearaway stabilizer- Heavy water-soluble stabilizer (such as Vilene or Sulky Ultra Solvy)- Temporary spray adhesive (such as Gunold's KK100)- Polyester fiberfill- Needle and thread for hand sewing, or fabric glue

Design featured in this tutorial: - X13868, Cake Pincushion (In-the-Hoop)

Finished Size: 3 1/2" wide x 2 3/4" deep x 3 1/2" tall without candle or 6" tall with candle

Special Notes:

To make a whole cake, embroider and assemble six whole slices. If doing this, make sure to buy 1/2 yardof the white quilter's cotton instead of 1/8 yard.

In this tutorial the cake pincushion is sewn together by hand. If desired, you can also use fabric glue toassemble the cake. Simply make sure to hold the pieces together until the glue completely dries for bestresults.

embroidery files (labeled a-h),and the other five are dielinefiles, marked with the letters DL.Dielines are used to cut the fabricto the right shape and size.

Open the dielines files withembroidery software and printthem. If you do not haveembroidery software, WilcomTrueSizer is a free program touse.

Print out three copies of thedieline "a" as the three pieces aretogether in one file. Cut aroundthe paper dieline shapes, andspray the back of them. Thensmooth them onto theappropriate quilter's cotton.

Cut out the shapes, and removethe paper dielines from the fabric.

Hoop a piece of tear-awaystabilizer. Madeira E-Zee Tear1.5 oz. or Floriani TearawayMedium are good choices. Thosebrands are more fibrous, lesspaper-like, and will tear morecleanly.

Attach the hoop to the machineand load the full embroidery file"a" (not the dieline files).

Use a size 11 or 75/11 sharpsewing needle, rather than anembroidery needle. A sharpsewing needle has a smaller, finer point than an embroideryneedle, so that will make smallerperforations in the stabilizer.

Embroider the design. The firstthing to embroider will be the"frosting layer dieline." Thismarks the area on the stabilizerwhere we'll place the first fabricpiece.

Remove the hoop from themachine, but do not unhoop thestabilizer. Spray the back of thefrosting fabric piece with atemporary adhesive, and place itright inside the sewn dieline.

Attach the hoop back onto themachine and continue toembroider the design. A tackdown stitch will sew next. Thisbinds the fabric in place for theremainder of the design.

Next the "cake dieline" will sew.Spray the backside of the secondfabric piece, and repeat theprevious steps to add it on top ofthe first. Continue embroideringthe design. A tackdown will sewto hold the piece in place.

Then repeat the steps again toadd the third fabric piece. Sewthe "filling dieline," spray the backof the fabric piece, place it in thedieline, and sew out thetackdown.

Once all the fabric pieces are inplace, the inner details will sewalong with the finishing borders.

When the embroidery is finished, unhoop the stabilizer and gentlytear it away from the edges.Make sure to leave the tearawaystabilizer on the back of the fabricpiece as this will add a little bit ofstructure to the cake pincushion.

Repeat the previous steps toembroider the other four fabricpieces of the cake (b, c, d, & e).Once they are finished beingembroidered, tear away theexcess stabilizer.

To embroider the lace pieces, hoop a piece of water soluablestabilizer tightly. There are acouple of different kinds of water-soluble stabilizer. One is clearand plastic, and that brand isSulky Ultra Solvy. The other issoft and fibrous, called Vilene. Both will work very well. Vilene isused in this demonstration.

Freestanding lace is seen fromboth sides, so wind a bobbin withthe same thread that you're usingin the needle.

Attach the hoop, load the laceembroidery file (labeled with an"f"), and embroider the design.

After the embroidery is finishedtrim away the excess stabilizer.

The stabilizer's packaging shouldgive instructions for removing theexcess. For Vilene, soak the lacepieces for a few moments.

Allow the lace to air dry, and thenpress the lace with a pressingcloth on top.

Repeat to sew the other two lacepieces (g & h).

Now that all the embroideredpieces are finished, it's time tostart assembling the cake.

Take the first side of the cake(piece "a") and the back of thecake (piece "c"), and line up theshort edges with wrong sidestogether. Make sure to look ateach piece carefully, and locatewhat is the top edge of eachpiece. Then make sure that thetop edges of each piece are alsolined up to prevent one piecefrom being sewn on upside down.

Once both pieces are lined up,sew the two pieces togetheralong the short edge with theicing fabric on the side piece.

Repeat to add the other sidepiece (piece "b") to the oppositeshort edge on the back piece("c"). Again, be careful to not sewthe side on upside down.

Now take the top of the cake(piece "d"), and line up a straightedge with the top edge of one ofthe sides. Make sure the curvedside of the top piece is next to theback piece ("c"). Hand sew alongthe straight edge to connect thetop piece to the side piece.

Then repeat to add the bottompiece to the bottom edge of thesame side. Make sure the curvedside of the bottom is next to theback piece.

Take the lace icing (piece "f"),and line up the straight edge withthe top edge of the back piece("c"). Make sure the wrong sideof the lace is facing the samedirection as the right side of theback piece. Hand sew the lace tothe top edge of the back piece.

Next fold the pieces in, and lineup the two remaining short edgesof both sides ("a" & "b"). Makesure that the wrong sides of theembroidery are together, andhand stitch the two sides togetheralong the short edge.

To make the candle, lay thecandle stick ("g") and the flame("h") pieces on the table with thewrong sides facing up. Set theflame on top of the candle stick.Line the flame up so that it issitting in the middle section of thecandle stick, and make sure thebottom curved edge of the flameresting right along the short edgeof the candle. Hand sew the twolace pieces together using threadthat matches the candle stick.

Once the flame is secure, creasethe two long folds on the candlestick ("g"), and fold it up so thatthe two long edges meet. Handsew the two long edges togetherfrom top to bottom.

Position the bottom of thefinished candle on the top of thecake. Carefully hand sew it inplace, and make sure it is secureand not tipping over easily.

Then finish sewing the top edgeof the cake onto the side andback pieces. For best results, sew along the straight side first, and then sew along the curvededge with lace icing.

Turn the cake over, and handsew the straight edge of thebottom piece to the straight edgeof the side piece. Make sure toleave the back side open forstuffing.

Stuff the majority of the cake withpolyester fiberfill. Then sew 1/2 ofthe curved side to the back piece, and add more stuffing until thecake is as firm as desired. Sewthe rest of the opening closed.
