Primary Schools Assembly For Harvest 2020

Slide 1: Introduction Good morning/afternoon everyone. Welcome to our CAFOD Harvest assembly. I am here with you today to think about how we can support others during this Harvest season.

Slide 2: Who can remind me what CAFOD stands for? Invite responses from the children.

CAFOD believes in a better world, where no one lives in poverty and each of us can become the best person we can be.

In a world without poverty, people have clean, safe water to drink and enough food to eat. Everyone has a safe home, children can go to school, and anyone who is sick can visit a doctor or nurse. But we also think about our global neighbours around the world.Slide 3: While it has been a year like no other, at Harvest time, we still celebrate and give thanks for the food we have. We think about farmers all around the world who work hard to plant and grow food. We think about people who deliver food to others.

Slide 4: Can anyone tell me about their favourite food during the months away from school? Mine was…To make this, it would need a farmer to grow X, a N to make X and then someone to take it to the supermarket/greengrocer/shop

where I could buy it. So I’m very thankful for the farmer, the N and the people who deliver the food.Who do you think helped to make your favourite food?(Was there any type of food that it was hard to find during lockdown?)Invite responses from chn.Slide 5: Having basic things in life, like clean water and enough food to eat, helps us to be the best person we can be and live life to the full.

We remember the words of Jesus in the Gospel:

Matthew 25:34-40 “I was hungry and you gave me something to eat; I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.”

Slide 6:

Sadly though, that’s not possible for all our global neighbours. Particularly this year, we think of people who because of the coronavirus do not have enough food, wherever they live in the world, nearby or far away.

This year, over 350 million children around the world missed at least one meal a day because of school closures. That’s nearly one in every five children. From Brazil to Bangladesh, Cambodia to Kenya our global neighbours need our support to make sure they have enough food to eat. Let’s find out about some more children from around the world.

Slide 7-8: Zimbabwe is a country in Africa. The capital city is called Harare. Is anyone here from Zimbabwe or does anyone have family there? Last year and earlier this year before coronavirus arrive, Zimbabwe and the country next door, Zambia, were hit by poor rains. What do you think that might mean for their Harvest?

Slides 9-10:As well as the lack of rain, schools were closed because of coronavirus, just as they were in this country. What can you see in these pictures that’s the same as schools here? Facemasks/social distancing.

Now CAFOD is supporting this school to provide one nutritious meal a day for children who would otherwise struggle to have enough to eat. Often their school dinner is their only meal of the day and missing this means they don’t eat at all.

CAFOD has provided face masks for every child at the school so they can continue to come and collect their food parcel, and also

buckets for handwashing so they can protect themselves from the spread of the virus.

Slides 12-16:CAFOD has been also been helping farmers in other parts of the world. By selling the extra food they produce, they can afford the things that they need during lockdown. This is Eric in El Salvador. His mum and dad, Edelmira and Martir, have a farm in El Salvador. They grow things like mangos and cashew nuts, keep chickens and also have honey bees. Martir has been selling honey at the local market during lockdown. There are many ways we can support our brothers and sisters around the world this Harvest. By working together in our school, we can do our bit to help our global neighbours have enough food to eat – people like Eric and his family, the children at the school we heard about in Zimbabwe and many others. There is much work to do, but together we can build a brighter world. Fundraising option include:

Brighten Up fundraiser World Gifts

Here at N school, we will be XXX insert name of fundraising event/collection to help our global neighbours.Slide 20:Whatever you/we raise will make a life changing difference to our global neighbours. Help with growing food, or a simple meal can mean more people can live life to the full. Here are some examples:Over 350 million children missed school meals because of the global pandemic.£5 can provide a package of nutritious food to help a hungry child. In 2020, up to 132 million more people may not have enough food each day because of COVID-19.£12 can deliver emergency food, including essentials like rice, beans and eggs, to a family in isolation.Small scale food producers, already disadvantaged, are being hit hardest by the effects of the pandemic.£52 can provide a farmer with basic tools and seeds so they can feed their family and sell produce to earn a living throughout the coronavirus outbreak. One thing all of us can do is to keep people around the world in our prayers.Let us pray together:Loving God,We think of our neighbours, near and far, who live in poverty. We pray we may share generously all you have given us.Help us to work together to build a brighter world, where each of us can become the best person we can be.
