THE MAKER SPACE THIS WEEK

Year 6 students and their buddies planting our two new garden beds.

The Maker Space If you have clean plastic bottle tops and bottles or any wooden offcuts and spare bolts/screws please bring them to the office. The students will be using them to do some fun activities over the next few weeks.

Day  One:  Spending  the  day  in  transit,  we  caught  a  10  and  a  half  hour  8light  from  Melbourne  to  Pudong  International  Airport  in  Shanghai,  before  catching  a  coach  2  hours  on  to  Suzhou.  We  checked  in  to  our  hotel  late  in  the  evening  and  went  straight  to  bed,  ready  for  the  big  two  weeks  ahead.

Day  Two:We  spent  the  morning  exploring  the  Humble  Administrator’s  Garden.  Designed  in  the  16th  century,  the  garden  is  a  UNESCO  World  Heritage  Site  and  one  of  the  most  famous  gardens  of  Suzhou  and  indeed  China.  In  the  afternoon  we  walked  the  riverside  pedestrian  road  of  Shantang  Street  and  took  a  canal  boat  ride.  In  the  evening  we  visited  the  Suzhou  Industrial  Park  and  looked  at  the  modern  architecture  and  city  lights.

Day  Three:On  day  three  we  visited  our  sister  school  and  caught  up  with  our  friends  who  stayed  with  us  in  August.  We  introduced  ourselves  to  the  1000  students  and  100  teachers  at  assembly  and  were  presented  with  our  young  pioneers  scarves.  We  spent  the  day  in  class,  learning  lots  of  different  subjects  including  Chinese,  English  and  Art.  After  school  we  visited  Panman  Gate,  where  we  took  in  the  2,500  year  history  of  the  ancient  buildings  and  bridges.

Day  Four:We  caught  a  local  bus  to  school  and  learnt  a  variety  of  lessons,  this  time  including  music  and  mathematics.  In  the  afternoon  we  went  to  a  local  fruit  and  vegetable  market.  In  the  evening  we  returned  to  school  for  a  special  ‘Suzhou  Night,’  where  the  students  performed  for  us  and  we  got  to  meet  our  host  families.  We  8inished  off  the  night  by  going  on  a  boat  cruise  down  the  Suzhou  Canal.

Day  Five:  We  returned  to  school  and  did  a  variety  of  different  activities,  including  daily  8itness  and  eye  exercises.  In  the  afternoon  we  visited  the  Suzhou  Museum,  a  museum  of  ancient  Chinese  art,  paintings,  calligraphy  and  handmade  crafts.  The  building  was  designed  by  Chinese  architect  I.M.  Pei,  who  also  designed  the  Louvre  Pyramid  in  Paris.    In  the  evening  we  walked  down  Pingjiang  Road,  where  we  looked  at  the  shops  and  ate  delicious  Chinese  snacks.

Day  Six:  Today  was  our  8inal  day  at  school.  We  took  part  in  many  different  lessons  like  science  and  computers  and  were  treated  to  a  special  farewell  performance.  We  said  our  sad  goodbyes  to  our  new  friends,  but  made  sure  we  exchanged  details  so  we  could  stay  in  touch.  In  the  afternoon  we  went  home  with  our  home  stay  families  for  the  weekend,  where  we  got  to  experience  Chinese  culture  8irst  hand.

Day  Seven:Over  the  course  of  the  weekend,  we  stayed  with  our  home  stay  families  and  explored  the  different  parts  of  Suzhou.  Some  of  our  many  highlights  include:  visiting  Tiger  Hill,  making  dumplings,  enjoying  a  hot  pot  meal,  attending  a  traditional  Chinese  wedding,  writing  calligraphy  and  catching  crabs.

Day  Eight:We  said  goodbye  to  our  home  stay  families  in  the  morning  and  then  caught  a  bus  to  Huangshan.  Once  we  arrived,  we  visited  Hui  Zhou  Gu  Cheng  and  learnt  about  the  history  of  the  city  at  the  museum.  In  the  evening  we  visited  the  Old  Town,  where  we  enjoyed  a  local  dinner  and  shopping  at  the  street  stalls  along  the  way.

CHINA  STUDY  TOUR  2017:  In  the  8inal  week  of  Term  3  and  the  8irst  week  of  the  school  holidays,  15  students,  Mrs  Wells,  Mr  Hitchens  and  parent  representative,  Elena  Un,  went  to  China  as  part  of  the  2017  study  tour.  2017  marks  the  8ifth  year  of  sending  a  contingent  of  students  to  China,  as  the  partnership  with  our  sister  school  in  Suzhou  grows  from  strength  to  strength.  Over  the  course  of  two  weeks  they  visited  Suzhou,  Huangshan  and  Beijing.  Here  are  some  of  the  highlights:

Day  Nine:  We  woke  up  early  to  climb  Huangshan  Mountain.  Translated  to  English,  it  means  Yellow  Mountain.  It  is  one  of  the  most  famous  and  beautiful  mountainous  areas  in  China  and  is  listed  as  a  World  Heritage  Site  by  UNESCO.  We  hiked  approximately  10  kilometers  and  were  amazed  by  the  natural  beauty,  such  as  the  rock  formations,  the  sea  of  clouds  and  the  pine  trees.

Day  Ten:We  spent  the  day  exploring  the  Yi  Xian  country.  Starting  the  morning,  we  visited  Clan  Ye’s  Branch  Ancestral  Hall  where  we  learnt  8irst  hand  about  the  ancient  education  system.  We  were  given  various  lessons  throughout  the  day  including  how  to  make  bamboo  art  and  cook  dumplings.  In  the  afternoon  we  visited  Hong  Cun  village.

Day  Eleven:We  began  the  morning  with  some  hands  on  activities,  visiting  an  ink  museum  and  then  a  cake  shop,  where  we  made  our  own  Chinese  pastries.  We  then  boarded  a  bullet  train  and  caught  the  six  hour  ride  to  Beijing.  The  train  reached  speeds  of  305km  an  hour,  so  it  went  by  in  a  8lash!

Day  Twelve:Today  we  visited  the  Mu  Tian  Yu  section  of  The  Great  Wall  Of  China.  We  were  blessed  with  beautiful  blue  Beijing  skies  and  spent  the  morning  walking  and  taking  in  the  amazing  views.  In  the  evening  we  visited  the  Circus  World  Of  Beijing  and  witnessed  some  incredible  acrobatics.  We  capped  off  a  wonderful  day  by  having  a  special  Peking  duck  dinner.

Day  Thirteen:  We  had  another  action  packed  day  in  Beijing  where  we  visited  Tian  An  Men  Square,  The  Forbidden  City  and  Summer  Palace  and  learnt  about  the  different  dynasties  of  China.  We  saw  the  Olympic  precinct  which  hosted  the  2008  Olympics  and  had  dinner  at  Wang  Fu  Jing  Street.

Day  Fourteen:  We  started  the  day  by  visiting  Pan  Jia  Yuan  Flea  market  where  we  looked  at  Chinese  antiques  and  got  some  last  minute  gifts.  It  was  another  opportunity  to  use  our  Mandarin  skills  to  bargain.  We  then  went  to  Beijing  Airport  where  we  took  a  connecting  8light  to  Shanghai,  before  we  headed  home,  concluding  an  amazing  fortnight  in  China.
