  • Rewind 2010: The birth of the Student Technology Fee program Students deserve the best computers and AV since they pay for it now Commitment to a three-year replacement cycle for computers for student-facing use cases Nearly 3,500 computers in classrooms and labs The law of unintended consequences takes over www.towson.edu/compucycle

  • Rewind Before CompuCycle, most computers went to the great beyondthe state warehouseat end-of- lifecycle Those that werent warehoused suffered a fate worse than death: dismemberment and shredding through our electronics recycling contract Fact: few people want used computersor a dirty used car or a mangy dog in an animal shelter www.towson.edu/compucycle

  • Rewind The what if? discussions began, true geek fashion The challenges were dissected quickly, the perfect storm: lack of space, lack of budget, lack of people, lack of time The first rounds of foot-shooting began; aim was good www.towson.edu/compucycle

  • Gumby to the Rescue A better way to think: flexible, agile, and positive We need to climb over, under, around, or through obstacleswe stop saying it cant be done An exploratory meeting of campus can-do people was held www.towson.edu/compucycle
  • Slide 12
  • Gumby to the Rescue Gumby thinking finally prevailed: Vision + Belief + Faith + Hope = Space + People + Money + Time The program was approved by the Presidents Council for top-level support People came forward to offer space, a workforce, and volunteer help; the line continues Money came as an advance on our allowance through cost-savings projectionsmore on that later www.towson.edu/compucycle

  • Dollars and Sense The projected annual budget to repurpose 459 computers and donate 1,589 computers is $55,867 this fiscal year The savings compared to purchasing new computers is substantial: $441,530 Tools, supplies, and parts to run the program are minimal: $919 for the year The estimated labor costs for student employees and full-time staff working on this program is $2,800 annually; the rest of the work is provided through volunteers www.towson.edu/compucycle

  • Status and Progress As of October 15, 2104 190 computers total have been reconditioned and redeployed for campus use Total estimated savings of $179,047 vs. buying new computers 51 new requests are presently in the campus fulfillment pipeline 183 computers have been cleaned and donated to Baltimore County Public Schools www.towson.edu/compucycle

  • Towson High School Photography Lab www.towson.edu/compucycle Towson Universitys donation increased the digital photo lab size by nearly double. The eight extra computers in the photo lab allow for more students to work on their digital images using Photoshop and students are able to see the best images with dual DVI video outputs. In addition, I have noticed these machines are quicker at rendering. So for higher power needs, like photographic panorama, where students are stitching multiple images together, or scanning a high resolution film negative, I will have the students use the Towson University donated computers. The computers have been critical in creating time efficiencies and providing greater production effectiveness Noah Belt Towson High School - Visual Advisor

  • Towson High School Yearbook Production www.towson.edu/compucycle The computer lab in room 401 is critical to the production of the THS yearbook, Sidelights. As we move towards a paperless school system, students will rely on the computers to do all of the design and editing online. The Sidelights staff is grateful for the donations that keep our computers up to date so that we are able to continue our online yearbook creation. Claire Fluharty Towson High School Yearbook Advisor

  • The Road Ahead Develop a broader program advisory and operations council More aggressive internal marketing to create demand Extend the program to Harford County, our new home Work with Baltimore City Public Schools to use high school talent in exchange for computers in the schools Grow the volunteer workforce: TU students and high school students www.towson.edu/compucycle
  • Slide 28
  • The Road Ahead Provide extended training for volunteers such as A+, Cisco CNE, or other certifications to enhance employability Find additional campus and community partners Seek grant funding where possible Possible computer training for public school teachers Share what we learned and help transform the current culture of electronics disposal into a culture of conservation www.towson.edu/compucycle
