從前除了狩

獵外，就是

種粟黍。In addition tohunting, we alsogrew broomcornmillet.

母親會做好吃的

黍餅。The mothers wouldmake deliciousbroomcorn milletcakes.

我們用小米釀酒的

技術更是一流喔！Our skill at brewingmillet liqueur is first-rate!

我們以芋頭為主食，其他和

泰雅族差不多。Our staple food is taro. Other than that,our eating habits are quite similar tothose of the Atayal people.

我是排灣族。我們住在

南部的大武山附近。I'm Paiwan.We live in the areaaround Dawu Mountain insouthern Taiwan.

子是用石板砌

成的。牆壁、

屋頂的建材也

都是石板。Paiwan houses areconstructed of stoneslabs. We have wallsand roofs made ofstone slabs.

尤其在牆壁的外

圍，更有族人精

心雕刻的圖飾。Intricate designs arecarved on the outerwalls.

排灣族還喜歡

用多彩的琉璃

珠做成首飾。Paiwan people alsolike ornamentsmade of colorfulcrystal beads.

台東附近。We live along Taiwan'seast coast in theHualien-Taitung area.

女孩子長大後，

都要繼承家業。Girls are expected to takeover the household.

我是阿美族。I'm a member ofthe Amis tribe.

許多日常生活中的

事情，都要詢問我

拉坯完成後，再拿

我們的族人很會

做陶壺。Our people are quiteskilled at makingearthenware.

婚聘禮之一。The betel nut is not only acommon present but alsoa common betrothal gift.

還有，檳榔是阿美

族日常生活中不可

或缺的物品。By the way, the betel nutis a staple for the Amis.

我們住在平

原地帶。We live on theplains of westernTaiwan.

其實，我們和住在高山上的

朋友沒有太大的差別。Actually, we're not that much differentfrom our mountain-dwelling cousins.

我是平埔族。I'm a member of a plainsindigenous tribe.

你們知道台北總統府前的

「凱達格蘭大道」的凱達格

蘭，指的是什麼？Do you know what "Ketagalan" in"Ketagalan Boulevard," the broadavenue running east from thePresidential Office Building, refers to?

就是指平埔族在北部的一

支，叫做凱達格蘭族。That refers to the Ketagalan tribe,a branch of the plain-indigenouspeoples who lived in northernTaiwan.

因為我們住在平原地區，

與華人接觸較早而且頻繁

，所以文化流失了很多。As we lived on the coastal plainarea, we were early on in close andfrequent contact with Chinese settlers. As a result, much of ourculture has been lost.

新竹、苗栗等地。... the Saisiat tribe, inhabiting the areas aroundHsinchu and Miaoli ...

南投等地。... the Bunun tribe, inhabiting areas ofNantou County ...

稱做雅美人。That’s right! We Tao peopleare also known as the Yamipeople.

蘭嶼又叫做紅頭嶼。Orchid Island is alsoknown as Redhead Island(Hongtouyu).

哇！還有在蘭嶼島

上的達悟族。Wow!! And there's stillthe Tao tribe living onOrchid Island (Lanyu)!

蘭嶼Orchid Island

由於蘭嶼四面環海，漁撈成了

主要的生活方式，因此拼板舟

就是達悟族賴以維生的工具。Fishing is the major way of life for theinhabitants, so the canoes are a necessity for the Tao people.

蘭嶼位於台東的東南方海上，是一個西北

往東南逐漸細長的島嶼。Orchid Island is located in seas southeast of Taitung.The island runs on an axis starting in the northwest andgradually tapering toward the southeast.

在每年的三月到六月份，

有一年一度的飛魚祭。In March through June the Taohold their annual Flying FishFestival.

達悟族在新船下水時，

會舉行隆重的下水儀式。When a new Tao canoe is launched,the Tao people conduct a ritual.

每年五、六月小米收成後，

會舉行小米豐年祭。Each year in May or June after the millet harvest the tribe holds its Millet Harvest Festival.

頭髮舞Hair Dance

在小米祭中，會有

許多的歌舞表演。They sing and dance inthe Harvest Festival.

哇！達悟族的頭

髮舞還真獨特。Wow!! The Tao tribe'sHair Dance is reallyunique.

早期中國文獻中的原住民早期有少數的中國文獻對台灣的原住民生活情形做了紀錄。但這

些文獻通常只是傳聞或東南海上知識的總匯，不能當真。不過，在明末

陳第確實來過台灣，所以他寫的《東番記》被認為是比較可靠的紀

錄。

陳第於一六○三年跟隨明朝將領沈有容追趕海盜到台灣南部，

曾經遇上新港社的頭目大彌勒等人。在《東番記》中描述原住民的衣著、耕種、打獵、

婚姻、喪葬的習慣。例如「男子剪髮，留數寸，披垂；女子則否。男子穿耳、女子斷

齒，以為飾也（女子年十五、六，斷至唇兩旁二齒）。」（主要描述男性、女性有不同的

髮型、裝飾），「⋯⋯婿始見女父母，遂家其家，養女父

母終身，其本父母不得子也。故生女喜倍男，為女

可繼嗣，男不足著代故也。」這是說男女結婚

後，先生是住在太太的家，奉養太太的父母，

所以該族比較喜歡生女孩，因為女孩可以繼承

家業。

解早期台灣西南平原地區原住民的參考。清代以後，才有大量關於台灣原住民的明確文

獻紀錄。當然，十七世紀西洋人，如荷蘭人、西班牙人也有不少關於台灣原住民的描

寫。
