The BackBulb CARMEL ORCHID SOCIETY January 2019 January Speaker: John OConnell & Carolyn Salmon Why be Normal? Scared of not being “normal”? Dread being part of the “normal” crowd? Both emotions are completely “normal”. There is safety in numbers, but we all want to be unique or stand out. In the orchid world “normal” is growing Phals, Cats, Paphs, and even Dendrobiums (no catchy nickname yet) in plastic pots with a bark mix. You can’t go wrong, most of the cultural advice you see is aimed at the same four groups of plants being grown in the same kind of pot and mix. If you want to be a little adventurous opt for clear pots and grow a Phrag or two. A couple of generations ago, this was all there was. But as the orchid market switched from cut flowers to a hobbyist clientele diversity followed. Now you can get hundreds of different genera and many vendors even sell mounted plants. Not being normal takes a bit more work nowadays but is well worth the effort. There are numerous cool, non-normal plants for sale and many different things to fill our pots with, and then there is a whole world of mounting plants to explore. John and Carolyn have been experimenting with orchids, mixes, post, mounts and such for many years. They have found some things that work and some things that don’t. Why be Normal?

Scared of not being “normal”? Dread being part ofthe “normal” crowd? Both emotions are completely

“normal”. There is safety in numbers, but we all want to beunique or stand out. In the orchid world “normal” is growing

Phals, Cats, Paphs, and even Dendrobiums (no catchynickname yet) in plastic pots with a bark mix. You can’t go

wrong, most of the cultural advice you see is aimed at thesame four groups of plants being grown in the same kind of potand mix. If you want to be a little adventurous opt for clear potsand grow a Phrag or two. A couple of generations ago, this wasall there was. But as the orchid market switched from cutflowers to a hobbyist clientele diversity followed. Now you canget hundreds of different genera and many vendors even sellmounted plants. Not being normal takesa bit more work nowadays but is wellworth the effort. There are numerouscool, non-normal plants for sale andmany different things to fill our potswith, and then there is a whole world ofmounting plants to explore.

John and Carolyn have beenexperimenting with orchids, mixes, post, mounts and such for many years. Theyhave found some things that work andsome things that don’t. This talk is adiscussion on what has worked for themand why, long on live examples andshort on PowerPoint slides (Zero), come, brake away from the crowd, who want’sto be normal anyways.

Resolutions and Goals (ItMust be New Years)New Years day is almost hear, so it

must be time to reflect on last yearand make some plans, set somegoals. I guess I could say make someresolutions but nobody ever keepstheir New Years resolutions. All the‘experts’ tell us to set goals and planfor the future, and then turn aroundand tell us not to make New Yearsresolutions, aren't they the samething? The same or not, here aresome things I would like to get donethis year and a few things that Iwould like to see the society getdone this year.

• I bought a data logger last summerand I now have 6 months oftemperature and humidity data formy greenhouse. So far I have verypretty graphs, but I would like toanalyze this data so I can makebetter decisions about when towater.

• In addition to the temperature andhumidity logging I would like to loglight intensity measurements in thegreenhouse and possibly tie them tothe temperature and humidityreadings.

• Fungus and nutritional issues aredifficult, I need to work harder onsolving these issues.

• Ask for more help when I just can’tfigure it out. It should be easy, butit’s not.

• Work harder on publicity formeetings and the show.

• Hold some smaller social events, I

intend to bring back the OrchidHappy Hour in some form and maybedo some potting or dividingworkshops.

This should be enough to keep me busynext year, Hope yo9u have a few orchidgoals to work towards this new year.
