Tbe train was running at ordinary speed, and when near the Cheever ore dock it left tbe track, the mail, baggage, express, emigrant and smoking cars being precipi- tated into the lake, the locomotive and the other two cars remaining on the ties. Two persona were killed: Thomas Bou?e, mail agent, and Richard Q-iinn, express messenger. Tbe emigrant car had 68 passengers on board, and it is remarkable that no more of them were killed. Among tbe injured are Gsorge Place, baggage master; T. J. McLoughlin, conductor; H. 8. Moody, parlor car conductor- Henry Taylor a n d 0 . Nelson, emigrants. According to tbe acconut of Mr. John Harding, of Saranac L».ke, w h o w a s o n the ill-fated train, the smoking car turned Over on its side and was kept from going into the lake b y a telegraph pole, the emi- grant car was about one-third submerged, the day coach hung over the edge of the bank, tbe tender, mail, express and .bag- gage cars went o u t o f sight into the lake, and the parlor coach was left upon the traeaMMth the exception of the front, trucks. Mr. Harding says h e s a w t h e men in the water and went a n d g o t a boat from a boat house near by and rescued them. Miss Gertrude Myers of this vil- lage, daughter of John Henry Myers, was on board the train, and is mentioned as having displaced great coolness and judg- ment in assisting to care for the wounded. Tbe case of the emigrants was very pitia- ble. They were mostly Swedes, Norwegi- ans, etc., and were on their way back to their native land3 from the Northwest. Tbeir baggage was nearly all lost, and tbe railroad authorities compensated them at once. The cause of the accident appears to b e a mystery. Tbe train was running at its usual speed, and it is thought by some that the momentum spread the rails at the curve, while others attribute i t t o a broken journal. The Champlain division of t h e D . & H. railroads has been especi- ally fortunate in the matter of accidents, •ad thk ia th* worst that has ever baielleB it. THE WEEK. I'Hbiic School Xot«*. No message ever written by President Cleveland was more attentively 1 stened to than that sent in today; Tue general topics treated by the message, including the foreign relations of the government, were all that any democrat could desire, and the financial recommendations cao- nocJhe-fulljf understood until eooaideced. in connection with Secretary Carlisle'* annual report, to be sent to Congress to morrow, when contains the details of tbe plan f o r a reform of (be currency ef the country which the President so strongly endorses in his message. What will be the result of these financial recommenda- tions it will be impostiole to say until the sentiment of tne democrats bas bad time to become apparent. Speaker Crisp looked quite a s g o . d natured when he rapped me House to order as he could possible have' looked had a majority of tbe House oeen as fort- unate as himself in gettiag re-elected, and his own reelection to tbe Speakership been assured. Indeed, the most notice- able feature on tbe democratic sidi of the House, aside from the entirely too numer OUJ empty chairs, was the prevailing good nature of those who were defeated 1*81 month. If the republicans ex,>ectel to see an array of long faces tbey were dis- appointed. There have been a number of informal conferences of democratic Senators and Representatives for the purpose of dis- cussing the probability of retching an agreement o n a programme for tbe session, and there is some talking of holding a j not caucusjand requiring every m a n w h o attends to pledge himself t> stand oy whatever programme the caucus, adopts. If pledges could be secured from a suffi- cient uumber to control both House and Senate that would be an excellent idea, but it is certain tbat there are six or more democratic Sena:o:s who would notpl.-dge themselves. Like numerous other fake stories, that asserting that Presdmt Cleveland was offended with Admiral Walker because ot the report he m tde on afftirs ia Hawaii, has been disproved in a striking manner by tbe official order placing Adniral Walker at tbe bead of tbe Li^ht House Board, a position that is cous'd r^d by Naval officers one of the most desirable under the government. The President seems to have a special liking for this me<bod of knocking out silly -stories. It is much better and far more convincing than a stereotyped, denial. Treasury < ill dais take n" stock in the atori.es that Ctins;re89 will refuse to appro- pria'e the money needed to put the in- cune tax into operation, for the very simple reason that there are n > m ire op- ponent* of that tax in either Senate or House than there were when it was incor- porated in that taiff bill. Tbtt i« the common sense view of the- matter. If the opponents of the tax could not prevent Us being included in the tariff bill, they cer- tainly cannot, prevent an appropiiation to put it inti effect. There is reason, too. for tbe belief tbat Senator Hill, wbo led the light against the inometax in the Senate, will not only refuse to aid in try- ing to defeat tbe aporopriation- but will himself vote for it, as be is on record as opposing any and all attempts to embir- rass offi :ials by withholding appropria- tions -asked for, to be used in carrying out existing laws. Representative Cooper, of Fia , thinks the proper <miy to fil the offi :e of post- master is to have him elected by the voters of his town or township, and he proposes to push a bill providing the refor. Srt is also strongly in favor of th) a 1 iption of some system of curremy reform that will give the needed elasticity to oircurrency, either that proposed by Secretary Carlisle or something else upon which a majority can get together, and of a bill providing: for tbe buildine of the Nicaraerui catul. He says that if be could have his way he would make this session of Congress, short a s i t will be, memorable in the his- tory of the democratic ptrty. IC* a pity ther* are not more democrats of the same naiad. We harslenrned much. There is much remaining, else the millenium vrould be upon us. We still have some little peculiarities that eould be elimin- ated with good effect. Some waits that-hare descended to US evon from the days when the founder of the family- climbed trees for a Hying, and there were no tailors in the land. Then, when citizens itot In each other's way there was a grand racket on the spot, somebody died and nothing more was said. Now. the pun- ishment is in the name of the law, but the offense, modified, remains. We no longer, as a general thing, kill men to pet their dinner or their lady love. We are thought- less, greedy, inconsiderate o£ others, determined above all things to do as we please when we please. Hence hence a great many things. Society, so far as it has gone, is obliged to pro- tect itself from its own undoing. You can be pre- vented from building a wall too close to your neighbor's window, or tellbig lies about him, or holding two seats in the car when you bave paid for one, or smoking in places where you are asked not to. You can wear a high hat at the theatre hut it is a public nu something that makes the public uncomfortable, and the sooner it is restricted bylaw the better. It can't be denied even by us who love it best tbat this is a very perplexing season, and if we were not so absolutely sure about its being worth while we should wonder whetber it was or not. And if by any chance a doubt should lurk in a dark corner of our minds, just let us wait until Christmas morning and find that our cherished weaknesses have been spied out and ministered to, and our own gifts have turned out successes and then see if the candle isn't even small for tbe game. Nfo matter how well we plan, there are almost always "just one or two more" to be thought of in a hurry, and suggestiOHS if not specially good or new are apt tofitin. Your jnst-gone-to-hoiisekeepiiigfriend willsure- ly be pleased with a work basket for her guest room, done in color to match and fitted with all the things for which tbe feminine mind can offer an emergency. Or one of those pretty and con- venient felt covered writing tablets with all the fixings of paper, pens and ink. Also to match of course and"perhaps with a hit of painting or em- broidery. Or a calendar designed to suit, ohbutbe sure you knowherta^tcin decoration or that" Your 0WII is gOo 1. There are times when even angels must walk softly, or perchance even wait on the door mat. Then if she (.your friend I goes to the market, and being a proper housewife she doubt- less does, she will need a case to oarry her pass book iu, made of the-coarse linen used fur hook covers, or leather, or anything else suitable. Somebody said there was.nothing which tended to simplify existence like a well organized system of bags. It is even so. And we none of us have them all. Piece bag. party bag, shoe bag. skate bag, fan bag, bucron-bag, opera glass bag, thread bag, scrap bag, book bag, laundry bag. sponge bag, hot water bag. hot water bag bag. This la.-.t should.be of flannel, daintily embroidered and drawn up with ribbons. Speaking of cozies a pretty oue for a tea pot is easily made hy cutting the legs off a Japanese doll and giving her a heavy quilted skirt, and a tiny tray to hold, with a doll's cup and saucer on it. To 1)8 sure a wide-skirted Japanese woman would be rather incongunus, but there is no use being too fussy, A little porcelain slate painted with f«rget-me. nots and inscribed with the days of the week- for memoranda, is something anybody would like to have. We don't cover our own books of course but we do feel safer to have borrowed ones pro- tected. A useful cover to answer .the purpose with any ordinary sized hook is of heavy water Color paper, linen, leather, silk «.r velvet lined and stiffened. A pocket turned at the bottom >erv<-s to hold tbe book in place and there may lie rib buns to tie. The ileeurati OUS of course affording to the art of the makei-. "By n n e w regalatioa. bo»a«t« ar« allowed only in th« upper circle at the Cowri Theatre, I » » d o n . a restriction tbat causes rejoicm*- amon^r the male portion of tbe audience."

Tbat is probably w h » t it will bare to come to, even ia onr proad laud o< freedom. The a n a of tlte law m evidently tbe only thia* strong enoturb to nsju ( j n t h * saab has a s * sataswa, thorn haughty » » o - befbrs which every asea has craned and every tongae has - .—

As tbe world grow* better bred certain laws of SOOd conduct and good taste become unwritten. W e harslenrned much. There is much remaining, else the millenium vrould be upon us. We still have some little peculiarities that eould be eliminated with good effect. Some waits that -hare descended to US evon from the days when the founder of the family- climbed trees for a Hying, and there were no tailors in the land.

Then, when citizens itot In each other's way there w a s a grand racket on the spot, somebody died and nothing more was said. Now. the punishment is in the name of the law, but the offense, modified, remains.

We no longer, as a general thing, kill men to pet their dinner or their lady love. We are thoughtless, greedy, inconsiderate o£ others, determined above all things to do as w e please when w e please. Hence hence a great many things.

Society, so far as it has gone, is obliged to protect itself from its own undoing. You can be prevented from building a wall too close to your neighbor's window, or tellbig lies about him, or holding two seats in the car when you bave paid for one, or smoking in places where you are asked not to. Y o u can wear a high hat at the theatre hut it is a public nu something that makes the public uncomfortable, and the sooner it is restricted b y l a w the better.

By all means let them have the "upper circle", all but the four front rows.

It is rumored that we are to have a paper mill.

cmusTXAS Tarsus. It can't be denied even by us who love it best

tbat this is a very perplexing season, and if we were not so absolutely sure about its being worth while w e should wonder whetber it was or not. And if by any chance a doubt should lurk in a dark corner of our minds, just le t us wait until Christmas morning and find that our cherished weaknesses have been spied ou t and ministered to, and our own gifts have turned out successes and then see if the candle isn't even small for tbe game.

Nfo matter how well we plan, there are almost always "just one or two more" to be thought of in a hurry, and suggestiOHS if not specially good or new are apt to fit in.

Your jnst-gone-to-hoiisekeepiiigfriend willsure-ly be pleased with a work basket for her guest room, done in color to match and fitted with all the things for which tbe feminine mind can offer an emergency. Or one of those pretty and conv e n i e n t felt covered writing tablets with all the fixings of paper, pens and ink. Also to match of course and"perhaps with a hit of painting or embroidery. Or a calendar designed to suit, o h b u t b e sure you knowherta^tc in decoration or that" Your 0WII is gOo 1. There are times when even angels must walk softly, or perchance even wait on the door mat. Then if she (.your friend I goes to the market, and being a proper housewife she doubtless does, she will need a case to oarry her pass book iu, made of the-coarse linen used fur hook covers, or leather, or anything else suitable.

To 1)8 sure a wide-skirted Japanese woman would be rather incongunus, but there is no use being too fussy,

A little porcelain slate painted with f«rget-me. nots and inscribed with the days of the week- for memoranda, is something anybody would like to have. We don't cover our own books of course but we do feel safer to have borrowed ones protected. A useful cover to answer .the purpose wi th any ordinary sized hook is of heavy water Color paper, linen, leather, silk «.r velvet lined and stiffened. A pocket turned at the bottom >erv<-s to hold tbe book in place and there may lie rib buns to tie. The ileeurati OUS of course affording to the art of the makei-.

To make a pretty rack for cards or invitation* cut seven wild roses, abmu four inches at-ross from celluloid or water-color paper and "pa ill them. Jfake two slits in each just below the middle and run in pink ribbon an inch and a half wide. On the seven spaces of ribbon .letter the davs „f th-j week. Of course there is a smart bow .tl ll e top for it to hang by.

The proper footstool for an invalid to Lave is <.f feathers packed tightly in a ti.-king ease about eighteen inches in diameter and .-i^-ht in height Broad ribbons are placed across over rut covering to help keep the cushion tirm cm the bottom is a piece of Brussels carpet .to prevent n from skating over the floor after Ihr peculiar!) offensive manner of ordinary foot-.ro..;s.
