TRADITIONThe honour of participating in Sail Past as a member of BYC has been passed down for generations since1933. This year is a continuation of a wonderful tradition in our Club. It is one of the most important BYCevents of the year. This is the time that members join in the celebration of the official start of the boatingseason. It is a time to take the tarps of the girls (yachts) and prepare them for the boating season. Someput their beauties away for the winter months, but this day is significant as it now time to come out and playyachting.

Every year we have a new slate of Directors that guide us through calm and stormy waters to manage, Ithink, the most successful yacht club in the Pacific Northwest and perhaps on the greater Pacific Ocean? I ambeing modest on behalf of our Club. By attending this celebration we are saying, in so many words, to theformer and the present members “THANK YOU FOR THIS BLESSING”.

This opening day will probably see the Mayor and a number of Dignitaries come as honoured guests. BYC'soldest member Don Simpson and other Honourees are thanked. Long term members are given pins inrecognition of their long association with our Club. The speeches by our Commodore and the Vice areinformative and enlightening. I find, as one of the old farts in baggy pants, (the description of PastCommodores) that with each passing year the organizing executive take responsibility and credit for the daybeing sunny. Same thing I remember on my day as the Commodore. It was sunny and I fell on my kneesand thanked the powers that be that the ceremony was almost over and I that I had not forgotten to thankeveryone and all the members that made it go soooo smoothly. I didn’t care about the rain; I just wanted toget through the Sail Past ceremonies without messing up.

I want to personally thank Ray and David Ordano for their flawless sparking of the cannon. They have beenperforming this ancient tradition for as long as I can remember. I have noticed that they don't point thecannon at the BYC sign on the shelters, as was done one year. This is a spectacular event (though safe) andis taken notice by all on the dais as a warning that during the rest of the year perhaps Ray would have hiseye on them. Just kidding!!

I am glad that like most of the old farts, I do not have a strong voice when singing ‘O Canada’ as the oldwords come leaping out of my inner voice. I’m also forever grateful that the ships company is not having aminute of silence for me.

There was one year when a very stately ketch went under the Second Narrows while it was coming down andended up looking like a very sleek power boat. Another occasion was when the vessel “Happy Ten” caughtfire and members did the May Day rescue which caused the Sail Past to be slightly delayed.

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE MESSING ABOUT IN BOATS. Some new bloods in our Club are keen tojoin in but a little shy on the history of Sail Past and whether it’s BYC or the Royal Cornwall YachtClub, this will enlighten you on TRADITION.

There is NO dodging the responsibility of attending this most honoured event. Even if you aredown south on this date having a well-deserved vacation or your vessel has slid under the waves and youare anticipating an insurance cheque in the mail, you still should send a letter of regret to the Commodorefor not attending.

Sail Past is steeped in tradition and it is the glue that binds our Club together. The Sail Past ceremony datesback to the earliest beginning of naval traditions. One of the earliest references is in the Iliad. That recordsthat “after two years of preparation the Greek fleet, of more than a thousand ships and an army of 100,000men, assembled at the port of Aulis in the north of Greece for the Sail Past of Troy.” It is believed that fromthis ceremony came the famous expression that “Helen of Troy had the face that launched 1,000 ships”.

The tradition began at the first Yacht Club that was formed at Cowes in England nearly 200 years ago. Thememberships of Cowes were primarily aristocrats and many were familiar with naval practices and traditions.Cowes Yacht Club changed its name to the Royal Yacht Squadron and certain social graces were added to thetraditional naval practices.

The actual review of the fleet is steeped in more than 600 years of Royal Naval tradition and history. It wasintroduced to the Yacht Clubs as a continuation of the Naval habit of having Admirals review the fleet on thisspecial occasion. Protocol demands (in our time) that a flagship be anchored with the Commodore on thequarter deck to receive and return the salute. Vessels sailing past then dip their ensigns in return. Uponpassing the ships they may then hoist their flags and bunting. This is not always done at BYC as we do have afew rebels among us. As to flag etiquette, I believe, that the old Red Ensign is only flown by vessels that werebuilt and launched before February 15, 1965 when our current flag, the Big Red Maple Leaf became TheCanadian Flag.

May Admirals Club Update

The April Admirals Club meeting was a great way to kick off our boating season. Our own Rob Stokes & TonyRead delivered a refresher to our Admirals Club ladies covering Aids to Navigation, Rules of the Road, andmany other boating safety topics. A great interactive session and great to see so many enthusiastic membersout.

May Session - Saturday, May 25 - Back by popular demand, one-day Maritime Radio Course!

I’m very pleased to announce that our Admirals Club has once again teamed up with the great volunteers ofthe North Shore Power and Sail Squadron to offer a one-day Maritime Radio Course exclusively for BYC mem-bers on Saturday May 25, 2019 in the BYC Clubhouse. This course is being offered to our members AT COST,so not only is it convenient to take the one-day course at the club, you are saving $$$ as well!

This training session is designed to educate people on the proper use of and to certify people to use a VHFMaritime radio. To operate a maritime radio, you need the certificate. It's the law! The Maritime Radiocourse teaches emergency radio procedures and everyday operating techniques.

The registration fee for this session is $95 which is a savings over taking it elsewhere. It will be open for regis-tration to BYC Admirals Club first, then Junior & Intermediate Members a few days later, and then we will openit up to all BYC Members. Evites started going out last week. We have a maximum course size of 25 students. The charge for the course is to cover the cost of the training materials for each student and we will also bebringing in lunch. A few members have an account credit from last May’s course, and will be given a spot onthis course at no additional charge. There is pre-work that must be completed prior to the course, andyou will be able to pick up your course materials from the office a few weeks prior to the session. Spots onthis will fill up quickly so don’t delay in registering. After the 25 spots are filled I will be working off await list. Please reach out to [email protected] if you have any questions.

Its a boat, and stuff happens- Jack Oerlemans

Now that some years have passed and the people involved in our "Rescue" no longer have a boat (and arenot BYC members), I can tell our story.

First a bit of a prelude to our trip, we owned a Taiwanese trawler and loved her very much. I was alwaysproud of the level of maintenance that we did on the boat. Oil and filter changes done every year, coolantchanges regularly and fuel filters regularly serviced, the old Ford Lehman was a very happy girl!

We departed with our good friends for a trip to Gambier Island. They kept their sailboat at Mosquito Creekand we kept our trawler in Deep Cove. Not a big deal, as we were capable of plowing along at OVER 6knots! Their sailboat was lucky to get 5. So we were pretty sure that they would get some nice pictures ofus overtaking them on the route.

We were transiting the first narrows bridge, both on the command bridge with the wind in what is left ofmy hair. Great weekend, boat all stocked up and nothing left at the dock. ... Then it happened. I caught aglimpse of the oil pressure gauge "stirring", I remember thinking, "its an old boat and the wiring is a littledated". But then the gauge showed the pressure drop down to about 20 pounds of pressure! Somthing isamiss. I excused myself from the bridge and practically dove into the lower cabin. The gauge at the lowerstation confirmed that something was indeed wrong. So, what else do you do when you are under the lionsgate bridge and the engine has lost oil pressure? You shut her down! My wife came through the doorwaywith that look. What happened she said? I replied that the oil pressure gauge was failing and I needed tocheck it out, no big deal Right? We opened the engine hatch to the smell of a diesel and the smell of oil.The Lehman was quietly sitting in about half of her oil supply and I was happy that I had shut her downbefore any damage occurred. But now, we were dead in the water in a busy traffic lane. Priority one, getthis boat out of here and then we can investigate further.

I called our friends on the sailboat and in a calm voice explained the situation. The response I got was, "soyou need a tow"? Yes was all I could think to say, no sarcastic comment about his slow sailboat oranything. Just Yes. I had a 200 foot line on board and we rigged up a bridle to haul us over to Jerichobeach. We could set an anchor and come to a plan of action. As we were setting up the tow a deep sea washeading into port, we had not even noticed it! So, back on the radio to advise coast guard that we werepowerless and trying to have our boat moved out of the way. Nothing... I repeated the message again andstill nothing from our friends at the coast guard, they were probably watching the camera on the bridgeand taking bets on when we would be hit. I switched to the traffic channel and right away the traffic peopleadvised that the ship had been notified and had slowed down to afford us an escape window.

So off we went at a blistering 2 knots heading to Jericho. What seemed like an eternity the humility ended,we dropped a hook and our friends did likewise. It was time to figure out where the oil had escaped theengine. I pride myself in having lots of spare parts on board, much to my wife's chagrin. But I did not havean oil cooler line that had split open. So now what? I started searching everywhere that I kept oily stinkythings and came up with an old oil line that the previous owner had obviously replaced. All was not lost, Icould smell the steaks cooking on the barbeque when we got to Gambier already in my head. We replacedthe bad hose and between the two boats, we had more than enough new oil to fill the crankcase and

head on. The mess in the bilge was sucked up and put in the empty oil containers and oil pads spread underthe engine for the last of it.

Our weekend was back on! Much later, as we kept pace with our sailboat buddies, we talked about our day? What had I missed out on with my maintenance schedule? The boat was over thirty years old and when weremoved "All" five oil cooling lines and brought them to Greenline to make up replacements I found out thereal truth. The lines were not rated for heat over 150 degrees (our Lehman ran at 180) and they were noteven meant as oil cooling lines. So, the time bomb had been placed many years earlier and was just waitingfor the right time to give us a shock. The lesson learned is, its an old boat, replace anything that can breakdown. And never tease your sailboat friends about the lack of speed they have. They saved our trip.

What’s On the Web. A little snippet of boating information brought to you eachmonth by our own Vice Commodore- Rob Stokes

We’ve got a couple of trips planned this year that include some selective harvesting of ourocean’s bounty. In preparation of getting up to speed on this year’s rules and regulations, Idecided to jump on the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) website and download/printthe info we required. I ended up with a 2” binder that’s over-stuffed – wow! Lotta info!.Thinking there must be an easier way, I went looking, and found one.

FishingBC is a saltwater fishing (only) app available for both IOS (App store) and Android (Play store). It wascreated by the Sport Fishing Institute of BC, and was done in conjunction with DFO. Current fishing regs andclosure Information are updated regularly, and I’ve found it to be current. Obviously it pays to double check.

The app itself allows you to scan the QR code on your paper licence and store it. While not a valid copy ofyour licence (which you must have with you), it does allow for DFO to scan it if ever needed. It also allowsyou to choose our region either by name or by map, where once chosen, will present you with theinformation needed for that area; things like areas closures, red tide alerts, allowable catch etc. etc. It goesfurther to keep a catch log, (quick entry of data, allows a photo) and to assist with species ID if you’reunsure what you caught

I printed our binder, so this summer I’m taking our binder with us. But I’m also using the app as it’s alreadyproving to be a valuable piece of tackle….

Jeddediah two summers ago on our way back south. One of our favourites...

If you could look very closely at where our stern line is tagged to shore and you'd see that if it was high tide,we'd have about 5' of water under the hull - we draw 3. Over our summer tour we'd had a few rough sternties where the Admiral, the current, the line, the dog and the dinghy were struggling with each other forleadership during the "away" phase of the stern tie process. The Admiral always won - but a few of thosetimes the clear skies did turn a shade or two bluer. So I really owed her one.

When we anchored that afternoon I made super extra sure we were set - and we were. Decision made Ibacked down the rode while spooling the windlass from the bridge controls and eventually put the swim gridabout a foot off the cliff face. With my nod of respect and while I held reverse, the Admiral stepped off, tooka single step, looped the iron eye, and stepped back aboard. Into neutral, we climbed back up the rode, cleated the stern line and popped a well-deserved beverage while my smart-ass heart rate slowed back tonormal...

Unbeknownst to me the lady in the sailboat beside us had obviously been watching the whole show for whenwe shut down and the silence enveloped we noticed her leaning comfortably against her shadedcockpit bulkhead with arms folded. There were no introductions, just "Well.. I've never seen it done like thatbefore" And into the bowels she went...

We did meet the lady the next morning - her husband too, when we had to wake them with a sharp rap ontheir hull and advise them that their anchor had let loose and they were about to pendulum into that samecliff using their stern line as a pivot. But that’s another story..

Sailors please note the new sailgrid shore tie shackle near the hose

stand in the parking lot. It'spainted orange and is anchored in

concrete.

Ch ch ch changes…

Transport Canada has just released an updated version of their Safe Boating guide. While most of the materialis the same, there have been a few updates and the one that will affect us the most has to do with flares.

Effective immediately, the total quantity of flares required for your vessel can be reduced by 50% as long as acouple of provisions are met. The main one being that you have a 2-way communication device aboard (andit’s in service), and the other is that only half the quantity of flares can be of type “D” (D for Daylight, meaning smoke flares)

The Safe Boating guide can be seen here:http://www.tc.gc.ca/media/documents/marinesafety/TP-511e.pdf?WT.mc_id=87y56The Safe Boating guide can be downloaded here:http://www.tc.gc.ca/media/documents/marinesafety/TP-511e.pdf

Club keys, fobs and such.

At each of our slips is our pride and joy, and in each of our neighbouring slips sits the pride and joy of fellowmembers. As owners of this club we all have a responsibility to assure each and every vessel in the club is assafe and secure as possible. One of the best ways we do this is by providing a level of control over who hasready-access to the club facilities.

We’ve noticed a bit of a disturbing trend lately – less and less trades personnel are stopping into the office tosign in and are simply making their way to the docks on their own. What’s even more disturbing is some aregaining access by key – and not by gate code.

If you have trades personnel coming to work on your boat, please advise the office ahead of time. When thetrades personal check in for the day, the office will verify their permission and provide them with the gatecode. If prior arrangements have not been made with the office, no entry will be permitted.

Please take a moment to review the rules pertaining to security (printed below). And if you have lent a key toa non-member, please retrieve it as soon as possible. Going forward, any non-member seen using a key willbe asked and expected to surrender it.

Security:

44. It is the duty of each and every member to ensure that the gate leading to the floats is kept lockedat all times. Keys to the gate shall not be duplicated or given to non-members.

45. If guests, mechanics, boat brokers, etc. wish to obtain admittance to the floats and are notaccompanied by a member, it will be the responsibility of the member involved to ensure thatarrangements have been made with the Office staff to authorize the admission in each instance.

46. It is the duty of each member to report, or take the necessary action, as the case may be, againstanything that is a breach of Club security.

We thank you in advance for being pro-active about returning to acceptable practice.

Spring Cruise 2019 - Log Race your way to Ekins!

Hi Everyone, Colette and I are working hard to put together a fun and enjoyable weekend at Ekins on thelong weekend, May 17 to the 20th. Of course we have plenty of help from all sorts of fantastic members! One of the events you can begin ahead of the Spring Cruise is the Predicted Log Race. The what?

BYC Predicted Log Race to Ekins - What is it?

A predicted log race is a contest where you attempt to most accurately predict the time it will take you tonavigate a specified course in your boat. The course is laid out and will end up at Ekins, in time for theweekend fun! The course has 5 legs. You look them over, determine the distance, determine your speed, fine tune your numbers and predict your times for each leg.

Wait a second, that sounds like Math.

You need to pick up the “Spring Cruise Log Race” package from the office with enough lead time to review itand do a little math. No wait, math? Okay it’s not that difficult. You might remember back to your PowerSquadron course the simple formula:

60D = St

This is pronounced, “sixty Dee street” and means:

D is for distanceS is for speedt is for time, in minutes

That’s it. So for example, if you are going 8 knots (S) for 30 minutes (t) you would expect to travel adistance of 4 miles.

D = ( 8 knots * 30 minutes ) / 60 = 4 miles or ( S * t ) / 60 = D

As another example, let’s say you are going from BYC to Point Atkinson. An approximate distance of 7 miles(D). If I do 7 knots (S) in mighty Knot Online, I predict it would take me 60 minutes.

t = ( 7 miles * 60 minutes ) / 7 knots = 60 minutes or ( 60 * D ) / S = t

Okay, what do I win?

Fame, glory, bragging rights! Oh and a trophy are there for the taking.

If you are interested, and up for the challenge please contact me and I will prepare a race package for you.Remember you need a little time before you head to Ekins to complete your prediction!

Good luck and hope to see you at the Spring Cruise at Ekins.

Thanks,David GagnonBYC Rear Commodore

From the editor-

I am sitting in Comox putting the final touches on the May Trident. Penny and Iare visiting our son, daughter in law and grand daughter. Having been a grandpafor only six month it is pretty exciting. We will be back in North Vancouver for theSailpast though. We couldn’t start the boating season without participating.

I would like to thank Jack Oerlemans for sending in his boating story. Why doengine failures always happen at the most inopportune time?
