So then, just as you have received

Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live

your lives in Him. Colossians 2:6

There is a baYle for the souls of your children. StaKsKcs show that young people today are less likely to embrace the tradiKons of the church or even aYend church. There is an increase in depression and anxiety among children, and there are numerous studies that reveal the dominance of screens and social media as linked to the negaKve influences in the lives of our teens and tweens.

What does the church have to say about this? TradiKonally, the church has offered confirmaKon classes or catechisms designed to establish the child of God in the tradiKons of the faith. However, for much of our history, we as church leaders have usurped the God-given design for authority and mentoring, namely, the home. We have fallen into the rut of “ease” to simply ask parents to drop their kids off at the church and we as leaders and volunteers will carry them through the requisite courses and doctrines and then return them back to you having filled their liYle heads with sacred scripture and the most confusing of rituals. Over Kme, these meeKngs have become dominated by pizza parKes and games, and we have exchanged equipping for entertainment and we have confused training for babysidng and watching DVDs. We’ve jusKfied lowering the bar of expectaKons because we claim it is more inclusive, but our results produce an inadequacy of preparaKon for our young people to face the temptaKons of this world. I have a lot more I’d like to say about this…

So what is the answer? Like many soluKons the answer is not easy, yet it is simple and obvious. “Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger; instead, bring them up in the training and instrucKon of the Lord.” (Ephesians 6:4)

I submit that the church cannot do what God designed the home to do. The church ought to assist, encourage, and provide the means and expectaKon for parents to model the faith and instruct their children. The church ought to become a surrogate for the fatherless and the orphan, and the church ought to set the standards for equipping our kids on how to face this rapidly changing world whose values of leisure and self-love lead to the corrupKon of the soul.

I want to encourage you parents to get ready, we will be making some changes. I for one will not be held to judgment that I allowed our church to perpetuate a broken system of discipleship that divorces the role of fathers and mothers in the equipping process. It’s Kme we bring the home and the church together to fight for the souls of our kids - are you ready for baYle?

Blessings, Pastor Ryan …bring them up in the training

On Sunday, July 7th, we had our missionaries with us, and also a 6me of commissioning. Heather Pe)y, serving in the Dominican Republic, shared how their ministry con6nues to grow and how the church can be involved in many ways. Aaron and Rachel Turner shared of God’s goodness to bring 7 new bap6sms through their ministry in Grand Rapids, and a con6nued vision of outreach through crea6ve mee6ngs like an annual “out-door” service. We were also blessed to have two of our teens, Cody and Ma)hew Bowser, commissioned for a summer of service at Lake Ellen where they led music and served as camp counselors.

Grace Presbyterian -

Thank you so much for allowing me to come and share about Freedom! It was an absolute joy to see you all and to be encouraged by you! Thank you for your con>nued support and prayers. May we see many more lives glorify the Lord this year! Thank you for partnering with me! Heather PeEy

We con6nue to be led by the Holy Spirit to create and provide comfort quilts to others. Through the work that God is doing in us we can see the paLerns of His grace. This past summer we have been making lap quilts for those on our church prayer list, as well as, sewing a special bed quilt to raffle off in the fall. Look for more informa6on posted at church in regards to this. The raffle will include a sweet baby quilt (a sneak preview) which is pictured above. You can never have too many quilts! All proceeds from the raffle will be used to purchase baTng and material to further our outreach quil6ng mission work. We always welcome newcomers to our group, which meets on Tuesdays from 9:30am - 2:30pm. If you need more informa6on, have any ques6ons, or would like to make a dona6on, please give us a call: Kris Mulder (906-869-2747) or Gail Loeks (231-884-5700).

It's wondrous what a hug can do. A hug can cheer you when you're blue. A hug can say, "I love you so," or "Gee, I hate to see you go."

A hug is "Welcome back again," and "Great to see you! Where've you been?" A hug can soothe a small child's pain, And bring a rainbow aAer rain.

The hug! There's just no doubt about it... We scarcely could survive without it! A hug delights and warms and charms It must be why God gave us arms.

Hugs are great for fathers and mothers, Sweet for sisters, swell for brothers. And chances are some favorite aunts Love them more than poHed plants.

KiHens crave them; puppies love them; Heads of state are not above them. A hug can break the language barrier And make the dullest day seem merrier.

No need to fret about your store of 'em; The more you give, the more there are of ‘em! So stretch those arms without delay, And GIVE SOMEONE A HUG TODAY!

Grace Kids Ministry

This summer has been a busy one at Grace!! VBS was the highlight of our summer! We had over 50 kids aHend that week, and each day they got to learn truths about our great God! They learned that when life is unfair, sad, scary, changes, or is good, GOD IS GOOD! Weeks aAer VBS my own children are living out these truths, and it makes my heart so happy!

Our Back to School night was a success as well! Not only did we have a yummy Sundae Bar, but we also started the school year right by dedicaZng it to the Lord. We prayed for the children as they enter the mission field that is their school, and Pastor Ryan talked about how God will be with them as they put on the full Armor of God.

This Fall we are adding a new Sunday School Classroom. We will have a 3 year old-Kindergarten room, a 1st-2nd grade room, and a 3rd-5th grade room on Sunday mornings, along with our nursery.

We are in need of more volunteers to teach our kids on Sunday mornings. If you would be willing to help out, please contact me. It’s a great privilege to teach these young minds and hearts about the God who loves them so much! Blessings, Emily 715-525-1688 [email protected]

Community Meals The Community Dinner Ministry Team wants to thank everyone for the awesome parWcipaWon we’ve seen in the dinners. Our a[endance is way up, with the annual Fish Fry Dinner serving upwards of 215 people!

Many of us don’t see what happens behind the scenes to bring these meals together, but a great coordinaWon of purchasing, ge_ng equipment such as grills and fryers in place, preparaWon, actual cooking, serving, and cleanup is required. An army of volunteers is necessary, and somehow always available, to pull it all together. This is such a great ministry to the community, and we appreciate each and every person who has a part in it. We’re

looking forward to our next meal

Prayer Circle - Fridays 9am

(by Virginia Lange) Above is a sample of the sancWfied feet of Grace Church as they meet for Friday morning prayer. They come to dance to the music of God's grace, praying for the pastor and church leaders, and for the needs of the congregaWon. Whatever our season in life, and wherever we find our mission field today - be it with family, friends, co-workers, here or on foreign soil - our duty is the same: to spread the good news that Jesus came to save sinners. How grateful we are!

The Earth & the Heavens are His

This past July marked 50 years since the Apollo 11 moon landing, and we saw many news reports honoring that great accomplishment. But did you know this? Before the door of the lunar lander opened and the famous moon walk happened, Buzz Aldrin did something that had never been done before on the surface of the moon. He took Communion! Aldrin was an elder at Webster Presbyterian Church, and had goHen special permission from NASA to take bread and wine with him to space, to give himself Communion. These were the first foods ever poured or eaten on the moon. First he read silently from John 15:5, which he had wriHen on a 3x5 inch notecard, then he pulled out the wafer that was in a plasPc packet, and poured the wine. Aldrin later wrote, “I poured the wine into the chalice our church had given me. In the one-sixth gravity of the moon the wine curled slowly and gracefully up the side of the cup.” At the end of the mission, when they were headed back to earth, Aldrin again read scripture, this Pme aloud, from the same notecard - Psalm 8:3-4. “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars which thou hast ordained; What is man that thou art mindful of him? And the son of man, that thou visitest him?” His church hasn’t forgoHen the impor- tance of Aldrin’s act of worship, as “Lunar Communion Sunday” is celebrated annually at Webster Presbyterian.

We are responsible for how we care for the earth, which was part of our discussion at coffee hour one Sunday aZer church. Tracy Husing, Grace Flunker, Peggy Ketola, Gail Loeks, Sandy Blockland, and myself, have decided to take some simple steps to help take care of our space at church a liHle bit beHer. We all recycle at home but how can we do a beHer job at church? We’d like you to know what is only the begin- ing of an exci8ng adventure in being more “green” at Grace Sagola.

Year’s ago Pastor Dave suggested to replace the styrofoam coffee cups and plates with paper. One step at a Pme and now a few more steps. Recycling bins have been donated and there are two in the kitchen with instrucPons. One is for soZ plasPcs (clean outside wrappers only) & one for glass, Pn, and plasPcs (all need to be rinsed out but can be mixed). There’s a separate bin under counter in fellowship room for empty plasPc water and juice boHles boHles only (juice boHles need to be rinsed). Then there are three bins in each Sunday school room for paper. These bins are for any recycling in church only, but encour- age everyone to do the same for their home use. We have a plan in place to remove recycling each Sunday aZer fellowship hour.

The 4 R’s of recycling: Refuse (get away from buying plasPc whenever possible), Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. I’d like to add a fiZh......Rejoice. Rejoice with us and help us make the Lord’s earth a beHer place to live right here at Grace Presbyterian. Your friend in Christ, Debbie Gursky

Psalm 24:1 ”The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein.”

1. It takes a lot of energy to create a metal product and get it to its final shape. Recycling metal items helps conserve that energy. 2. By recycling one ton of paper, you can save seventeen trees. (Paper adds up quickly!) 3. Glass is 100% recyclable....every boHle or jar will find another life! 4. PlasPc seems to find its way in every product we use. We can’t seem to escape it, and it takes 500-1000 years to degrade!

Our Helping Hearts Visit to Iron County Medical Care Facility Due to privacy issues, I am not able to post pictures of the residents during our visits. So, I just wanted to share with everyone how wonderful our visit was to ICMCF on July 20! We were welcomed by Kevin who brought freshly baked white chocolate chip cookies and a hot cup of coffee. Then we found out that Inga (a Finlander) would be celebraEng her 100th birthday on July 30! What a wonderful blessing! She seemed to be in good health and gecng around just fine. On her birthday I visited her with a beauEful bouquet of flowers and was able to meet her son and daughter. She is quite the person and has experienced a lot in her 100 years on this earth. It is always nice to talk with others and find out where they came from and what contribuEons they have made to society. The residents like to share their pasts too, all you have to do is ask. And lastly, we enjoyed fellowship and a delicious lunch and pie at Fobs with other Hearts.

Our next visits to ICMCF, will be Sept. 21 and Nov. 16, from 2-3 pm. Maybe you would like to join us! We meet at the church to carpool at 1:30. Any further quesEons please contact me at 906-396-3953. Love & God’s blessings, Lois
