Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,
The crazy lazy days of summer are almost upon us. MSU,
Belgrade High School and Manhattan Christian have already held
their graduation ceremonies and in just a few days Bozeman High
School will celebrate their graduation.
Sumer is a wonderful time to enjoy the God-created beauty of Montana and those summer activities of
camping, hiking, fishing, and so on that we put on the back burners of our lives during the long winter
season.
I hope the summer is also re-creating for us as we spend time with family and loved ones (“loved ones”
for some, mean trout in our rivers!). When I interviewed with the Call Committee one member reminded
me that Montana is where there are nine months of winter and three months of guests. That statement is
proving true for Joyce and me this summer as we are looking forward to our girls, as well as friends from
Connecticut, spending time with us. Following the Synod Assembly, Joyce and I will spend a few days
with Justin, Kari and Everett Eller (whom I met in Bolivia when they were serving as our ELCA
missionaries) at Flathead Bible Camp before heading back to Bozeman for a few additional days with
them. Our calendar is certainly speckled with the names of folks spending a few days with us throughout
this summer and we are looking forward to each of these visits, whether for a few hours or a few days.
I am grateful to everyone who helped make the send off for Kayla and Eric special. It was a wonderful
celebration of their two years with us. Once we know more definitively where they are heading for
Kayla’s first call, I will share that information with you. Please keep them in your prayers as they make
this transition in their lives.
On July 1 our new pastoral intern, Jonathan Ask, starts his year of internship with us. Jonathan and his
wife, Christy, will be moving to Bozeman in late June as they will be participating in the “Pedal for Peas”
bike trip from Helena to Bozeman to help raise funds for ELCA world hunger relief efforts. I look forward
to having “Vicar Jon” join us for the coming year as we help prepare another seminarian for future
service as an ordained pastor in the ELCA. More information on welcoming the Asks will be
forthcoming.
As we enjoy the summer weeks ahead let me remind you that we will again offer a
weekly Wednesday night service beginning Wednesday, June 17. Last year we
focused on a different favorite hymn of the congregation; this year, we will focus on a
favorite Psalm. The Psalms have been called the songbook and prayer book of the
Bible. Just about every emotion can be found in the Psalms. So, if you won’t be able
to join us on Sunday, please consider joining us on Wednesday nights for picnic dinner fellowship at
5:30 and worship at 6:30. We should conclude shortly after 7.
If you are in town, I hope you will join us for Sunday worship and communion. Starting June 14 our
Sunday services move to 8:15 and 10am. If you will miss a few weeks this summer one way to stay
current with your financial support of Hope’s ministry and mission is to consider
signing up for automatic deduction. You remain in complete control of the
frequency and donation amount. Just log into THE HUB and click on the
“Financial” tab. The signup process is really straightforward. If you experience
any difficulty in signing into the HUB or setting up your automatic deduction
please speak with Pete Astrup or myself. Your giving history
for the year is always available for you to check under the
“financial” tab.

Register now for Service Plunge! July 6-10
Calling all middle school
youth! Registration is now
available for Service Plunge
2015!
Service plunge is a week long
experience for all incoming
6th-9th grade students. We
meet at 9 a.m. every day and
end at 4 p.m.
Every single day we head out
into the community and
provide community service for
many different organizations. This
year we will be working with Gallatin
Valley Land Trust, The Food Bank,
Family Promise, and more! Every
afternoon we have a bible lesson and
some fun activities. On Friday after-
noon we will go swimming at Bogert
Pool!
Cost to register is $55 and
scholarships are available for those
who need them. This fee includes
all activities, a t-shirt and the entire
program.
Youth are encouraged to invite
their friends as well!
To register go to
www.hopebozemanff.com and

plunge!
Hope to see you there!!!
Sponsor a youth and help us get to Detroit!!!
We are seeking sponsors for the
17 youth and adults who will be
attending the ELCA National
Youth Gathering in Detroit, MI.
We have found that our
sponsorship program is one of
the most meaningful programs
that we offer. We ask sponsors
to support us in several ways.
First, we ask that sponsors
financially support their youth by
providing $50 per student that
they would like to sponsor.
Likewise, we ask that sponsors
support us through prayer. IF
you choose to sponsor a youth
you will be assigned a day that you will be
asked to specifically pray for your youth.
Sponsors are also asked to write a short
letter to the youth that they are
sponsoring.
Each night on our trip we will set aside a
time to read our sponsors letters, pray
specifically for our individual sponsors
and write a postcard reply. We have found
over the past three years that these
sponsorships create meaningful
relationships that last well past our trip!
Sponsors also will receive a packet that
includes information about their youth, a
picture to hang on their fridge, and a
devotional booklet that can be read daily
while we are in Detroit. Sponsors are also
invited to join us on Sunday, August 29
for a sponsorship dinner. During this
time, sponsors will sit with the youth that
they have sponsored and will be able to
share personal stories about their
experiences. This time together will
conclude with a video that will be
recorded during our trip.
If you would like to sponsor a youth and
do not have the financial means to do so,
please let us know and we will assign you
someone to sponsor simply through
prayer! This program is always extremely
meaningful for our youth. Thank you in
advance for your support!
Summer Opportunities for all ages!!!!
Vacation Bible School
Is in a couple weeks! Join us June 15-19 for a week long adven-
ture! Every day we will gather at 9 a.m.
for games, stories, songs, snacks, crafts
and more! We will end each day at noon
and on Friday parents are invited to join
us at 1130 for a program and a picnic.

Montana Synod Assembly:
Serve the World, Especially the Poor and Those in Need
June 5,6, and 7 — Great Falls, MT
The Montana Synod Assembly, June 5-7, 2015, will focus on the Synod’s benchmark of serving the world. In partnership with ELCA Global Mission, we will explore different ways the Gospel is being lived out across the globe. And we will look for ways to strengthen our global awareness and engagement. Among the highlights will be global music, with a combined Synod and Global Mission team of musicians. The Rev. Justin Eller, currently serving the ELCA as coordinator for Latin America out of Buenos Aires, will be a keynote speaker, addressing Accompaniment. Pastor Eller, and his wife Kari, served their first global mission assignment as missionaries in Bolivia, where the Montana Synod has a companion synod relationship. You can expect to learn more about both our companion synods—the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Bolivia, and the Cape Orange Diocese of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Southern Africa. You can dig deeper into the hows and whys of companion synod relationships, and learn some do’s and don’ts of mission trip planning. We’ll have workshops on a variety of global mission-related topics. We’ll also do busi-ness, adopting a budget and constitutional changes, electing church-wide assembly voting members and nominating committee members, and considering any resolu-tions that might be submitted by the April 15 deadline. The Assembly will begin and end with worship, and will be surrounded by prayer. You are welcome to join us at the Heritage Inn in Great Falls. Each congregation gets at least two voting members (one male and one female) in addition to clergy. Congregations with confirmed membership over 800 are allowed one additional lay voting member (either male or female). Congregations are encouraged to consider youth and young adults when electing or appointing voting members to the Synod Assembly But you are welcome to come, even if you are not a voting member. Hope’s voting delegates will be Rolf and Jaynee Groseth and Pastor Steve. Watch for a report on Synod Assembly actions in the July Herald as well as a report from Matt Rognlie on the Concordia College Corporation meeting he attended as the representative of our cluster.

COUNCIL APPROVES INSTALLATION OF SIX DAYS OF CREATION
STAINED GLASS WINDOWS IN NORTH WINDOWS OF SANCTUARY
The congregational council approved the installation of the Six Days of Creation stained glass windows
from money specifically given for this purpose as memorials. These stained glass
windows will be installed in the current six windows on the north side of the sanctuary.
The windows depicting the first three days of creation are given in memory of Ruth Sommerfeld by her
family. The window for the fourth day of creation is given in memory of Leona Gibson by her husband
Wayne. The window showing the fifth day of creation comes from a bequest by Jack Fellerhoff and will be
given in memory of Jack and Betty Fellerhoff.
The Congregational Council wanted to make sure that every member and friend of Hope who so desired
would be able to participate in this project . Therefore, the window for the sixth day has been reserved as a
“congregational window.” Donations toward this window, which would come from people electing to give
above and beyond their current support for our ministry plan, can be given in any amount. Donations can
be given in memory of someone (or a couple/family) or just to “the glory of God.” Persons wishing to
contribute toward this sixth day congregational window can do so by making a check out to Hope
Lutheran and marking in the memo area “Congregational Window.” If you wish to memorialize
your gift please include a note for whom your donation is being given. All persons who contribute
toward this window will be included in a flyer/booklet that will be produced to explain the windows and
indicate for whom the windows have been memorialized. The design, fabrication and installation of the
windows are by Susan Kennedy Sommerfeld of Kennedy’s Stain Glass Studio, Billings, MT. A late fall
installation is planned.
