Here are 36 task cards to help your students practice identifying the 8 common types of figurative language: simile, metaphor, oxymoron, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole and idioms. The task cards are supplementary and should be used once your students have been presented to figurative language. Task cards can be used in following ways: • Give each student a card and have him/ her read it and discuss the answer. • These cards can be used for oral activities in big or small groups. • You can also use this as individually written homework or seatwork. • Use the recording sheets to document the child’s answers. Another option is to record their answers on their notebook.

How to use these task cards:

We went hiking and camping the other day. It was such a long but fun walk back to the campsite. My friends and I were so hungry we could eat a mountain of pancakes. Fortunately, we brought a lot of campfire food.

I aced my Math test and saw my name posted on the top ten list. That was awesome! I feel on top of the world.

Winter is coming and many people feel under the weather. Take necessary precautions and stay warm. Remember to always wash your hands to keep the germs away.

The heavens wept for the children who died. People held hands and prayed for them and for each other.

"Brrrrrrriiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinng! An alarm clock clanged in the dark and silent room." -Richard Wright, Native Son, 1940

I took my brother out to the park to fly our kites. The kites were colorful fishes swimming in the sky. They were so beautiful.

It was so dark, damp and dreary. Just when we thought all hope was lost, the rooster announced the coming of a bright new day.

You are such a clown! I like hanging out with you. I’m glad you are my friend.

That was such a fun baseball game. The only downside was when the ball fell on my head and I saw stars dancing in front of me. Good thing I still caught it!

I have a pet lizard named Lizzy. Lizzy is a lazy, loony, light, little lizard. I bring her along with me whenever I can.

It was so cold. There was a blizzard. The wind blew with all her might. Cars were buried under a mountain of snow. People were asked to stay indoors.

That hair gel looks awful. To put it on your head would mean the Apocalypse! Look, it’s turned into a hideous color. It’s a disaster waiting to happen.

That is one pretty ugly doll you’ve got there. It reminds me of my old worn out raggedy Anne doll.

I love singing this song in the shower: “Baby you’re a firework. Come on show them what you’re worth!”

He drove a jaguar to the party and everybody turned green with envy. Nobody knew that it was just a borrowed car.

It was so dark out we couldn’t see where we were going. We were as blind as a bat. Thankfully someone had a flashlight in their backpack.

Come on! Spill the beans! Is she really going out with him? You’re as tight lipped as an oyster.

Mom made me an enormous, superb chocolate cake for my birthday. I was in seventh heaven! Everyone at the party got to take home a slice.

"Hark, hark! Bow-wow. The watch-dogs bark! Bow-wow. Hark, hark! I hear The strain of strutting chanticleer Cry, 'cock-a-diddle-dow!'" ~The Tempest by William Shakespeare's

Matthew worries too much. He worries about big stuff and small stuff. His friends call him a wet blanket but love him still.

From atop the pedestal, the judge examined the witness like a crow perched on a high branch. This made the witness so nervous his voice was but a whisper.

You are my rock. You make me feel good about myself. I can always count on your support. Thanks for being such a good friend.

Harry’s eyes were like deep rivers. I could drown in them. He’s my favorite.

Dad says I’m a wise fool to get a Chinchilla from the pet shop. I told dad I’m giving it to him as a present. We both laughed so hard we cried.

Even though they say the world will end tomorrow, I will love you for a thousand years.

The wind called out to me. I heard it whisper my name. It said… “put a jacket on, it’s getting cold!”
