Message from the PD Day Chair—Danielle Fontaine
Hello Colleagues,
We are all looking forward to our 15th Annual PD Day. Friends and colleagues will gather to-
gether from all over the Board to take part in professional development, network with one an-
other, peruse the exhibitors’ displays and enjoy the excitement of the day. The OCETF office staff
and committee members have been working hard to ensure that the day is a great success.
As you know this has been a stressful year for all of us. Strained labour relations with the govern-
ment have taken the spotlight, but ETFO teachers have been amazing and are standing united with a
strong voice.
Our PD Day will have thought provoking guest speakers and workshops. Keynote speaker, Sir John
Jones is known to give a dynamic talk, especially when it comes to CREATIVITY AND CRITICAL
THINKING outside the box. The afternoon featured speaker is EDUCATION AND DEMOCRACY spe-
cialist Dr. Joel Westheimer from the University of Ottawa.
I look forward to greeting an enthusiastic crowd at the Palais des Congrès on February 15th. This
promises to be a great day!

It’s Professional Development Day 2013 and we are very pleased to be all together
again. The theme this year is Creativity and Democracy in Education…two items sorely
needed in times such as these.
We are very excited to hear what keynote speaker Sir John Jones brings as a message. Now more
than ever is a time when teachers look to each other for support in a constantly changing educa-
tional environment. Our PD Day remains the only time all year when teachers come together in one
location and have the chance for truly organic learning opportunities. The interchange between
members around the workshops and speeches, as well as the exhibitor displays, really can be invalu-
able.
So often, before heading out for training or a conference we might say, “I’m just looking for one
great idea out of this workshop!” Well at our PD Day you might suddenly find five or ten ideas
which your peers have been employing in their classrooms and because the day is yours to direct,
you have the chance to explore them at your own pace. I would like to thank the PD Day Committee
and its Chair, Danielle Fontaine for volunteering their time to help organize this day. Of course, as
always, thank you to our amazing office staff for their stellar work.
Have a great day folks!
OCETF President—Peter Giuliani
me travail.
Bonne journée à tous et à toutes.

The Magic-Weaving Business
Society is changing so rapidly that we are preparing our young people for a
world that does not yet exist. Research suggests that most of the jobs our
elementary children will do have not even been invented yet! So how can we
give our youngsters what they need not only to survive but to thrive in that
new world?
For many children demographics still equals destiny. Where they are born still determines how
well they do. How can we break this cycle of deprivation to give every youngster the chance to
succeed, ensuring that every child matters and no child is left behind?
In the age of the internet, when knowing what is replaced more and more by knowing how, can
schools continue to engage students not just by teaching them but by helping them embrace
new technologies and learn how to learn?
As schools transform and the role of the teacher evolves, how can leaders sustain an environ-
ment in which positive relationships between teachers and students continue to thrive, so that
the former can weave their magic and the latter are able to develop the self-confidence to
succeed?

The Magic-Weaving Business, describes how powerful an impact teachers have
on young people and how learning can make a profound difference in their lives.
A number of key questions need to be addressed;
Sir Ken Robinson believes that we are trying to prepare our kids for the future by repeating what we did in the past. How can educators ensure that the next generation possess not only traditional basic skills but are creative, independent, innovative, emotionally intelligent, democratised individuals?
Book will be available for purchase, $20.

KAIROS educates and advocates for social change, amplifying and strengthening the public witness
of its members. The Blanket Exercise workshop focuses on the history of the relationship between
Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada since the time
of contact. It is a participatory, interactive exercise based on
the popular education theories of educators such as Pablo Friere.
It includes a discussion on how interested individuals can get in-
volved in advancing social justice and human rights issues specific
First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples.

A hands-on workshop that breaks down the dance curriculum and
teaches simple ways of meeting the dance expectations in a fun
and engaging way. Julia and Raul integrate elements of the
GROOVEmethod™ Kids, which is a powerful approach to teaching
movement/dance to children through simple choreography and
steps. The steps found in the GROOVE Method™ Kids program,
allow each participant to experience success and purposeful
movements by helping students to develop physical literacy, fun-
damental movement skills and an overall positive attitude towards
physical activity and dance. Teachers will learn how to create a
safe and playful space for each student to learn, dance and ex-
press themselves creatively through movement.

This unique opportunity is probably unlike anything you’ve participated in. What more effective way
to understand learning disabilities than to experience how it feels to be learning disabled?
A trained facilitator will put you and your group through a series of fun and inter-
active simulations and exercises that will give everyone a feeling and better un-
derstanding of what a child or adult with learning disabilities experiences every
single day of their lives.
An interactive, energetic and very enlightening workshop for everyone!

Is teaching core French causing you some stress? This workshop is designed to
help teachers achieve greater success when teaching French to second language
learners and survive the sometime hectic pace of the rotary French teacher.
Together we will examine effective classroom management strategies that help
eliminate negative behaviours and keep our students on-task. Co-operative games
and small group activities are introduced that help teach and reinforce French
curriculum so that students feel successful and engaged in French class. This
workshop gives you practical suggestions, high-yield strategies and classroom-
tested activities to help create a culture of fun where students can be motivated to succeed.

Democracy and Education in Troubled Times Dr. Joel Westheimer

1:15—2:30
The history of public education in North America is filled with strong commit-
ments to knowledge, critical thinking, democratic participation, and citizenship –
broad and historic ideals which are now in jeopardy.
As our cultural obsession with standardization, testing, and accountability meas-
ures are increasingly reflected in our schools, the education of our children suf-
fers. In classrooms and schools across North America, teachers are under attack
and the public trust that many teachers once enjoyed is threatened by the media, politicians, school
boards, and sometimes even by fellow educators. This workshop describes how this happened and
what we can do about it.
