What if you could realize one last dream before you die? While the body of tormented bebop innovator Charlie “Yardbird” Parker lies unidentified in a New York City morgue, his ghost travels back to the heyday of Birdland, the jazz club named after him. As he struggles to complete his final masterpiece, the legendary saxophonist revisits the demons, inspirations, and women who have fueled and hindered his creative genius.

The great gospel singer and virtuoso guitarist Sister Rosetta Tharpe had been performing for half a century when she died at age 58 in 1973, and it seems that no one who saw her ever forgot the experience. But she had long ceased to be the huge national star she was in the 1940s when she laid the foundation for modern gospel, rhythm & blues, rock ‘n’ roll, soul, and all the musical forms touched by these distinctly American—which is to say, African American—genres. Relegated to the margins of pop music history then "rediscovered" in the new century, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2018, some 80 years after the release of her first hit record, an exuberant —and in Tharpe's rendition ever-so-slightly suggestive—gospel number titled (of course), “Rock Me,” and three decades after the Hall should have recognized her importance. To be fair, the idea of an African American woman being the first "rock" star to ever whip audiences into a frenzy with soulful singing and guitar pyrotechnics was, back when the Hall opened in the 1980s, so anomalous as to be inconceivable. But Tharpe was an anomaly, and not just ahead of her time, but frankly decades ahead.

She developed her distinctive art in the late 1920s and early 30s as a child prodigy and teenage star touring the “gospel highway” circuit of Pentecostal churches, revivals, tent-meetings, and convocations, and her subsequent career and life would be decisively influenced by her enduring but uneasy relationship with the African American church. Music was—is—central to the intense and ecstatic worship of Pentecostal churches, and unlike the African American denominations that emulated the "decorum" of mainstream white Protestant churches, Pentecostals welcomed elements of the "rhythmic" African musical tradition into their sacred music. Nonetheless, the Pentecostal community was extremely conservative: the divide between the church world and the sinful secular world and between "sacred music" and "the Devil's music" was absolute, and to cross the line separating the sacred from the secular was to risk ostracism. And yet, in 1938 Rosetta Tharpe left her preacher husband and moved to New York City to share her "sacred" music with mainstream and secular audiences.

Her success was almost instantaneous, but involved performing in decidedly “un-sanctified” places and even doing some distinctly “un-sanctified” material, and many in the church would always feel she had not only tested the line, but crossed it. Mainstream audiences had never seen anything like Tharpe's combination of emotional force,

rhythmic drive, and assured musicianship. And there was the guitar. At a time when woman instrumentalists were rare, not to mention seen as demure, no one had witnessed a woman command any instrument with such verve – or seen any guitarist so dominate the stage and transport audiences. No small part of Tharpe's legacy is that she made the guitar and the guitarist central to popular music, establishing an archetype copied by generations of almost exclusively male performers (the arguably ultimate avatar being Seattle's Jimi Hendrix). With the honorific “Sister” added to her name, Tharpe became gospel's first national star.

Tharpe's popularity declined precipitously in the 1950s. Her almost supernatural gift for connecting to audiences never diminished, but pop music changed and in part because of Tharpe. The transformational artists of the era—figures such as Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, and Ray Charles—were deeply influenced by Sister Rosetta, but they were a different generation and appealed to the newly dominant audience: teenagers. And, crucially, their music was unambiguously secular, the ”devil's music.” In many aspects of her life, Tharpe occupied an ambiguous space between conventional

categories, and she certainly blurred the line between sacred and secular music. Ultimately, however, she couldn't “cross over.” She was committed to gospel even if gospel audiences had their doubts.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe's career wasn't over. In 1957, she received a surprise invitation to perform in England with a British jazz band. She became a major star of the British (and European) blues revival, inspiring a generation of now legendary musicians who in the 1960s conquered America and rock ‘n’ roll with their version of her “spirit-driven” music. Tharpe's success in Europe revived her career in the U.S., where young

(and mostly white) audiences were discovering authentic African American "roots" music.

That Sister Rosetta Tharpe is again being discovered by mainstream audiences is very much due to the groundbreaking work of scholar and author Gayle F. Wald, whose acclaimed 2007 biography, Shout, Sister, Shout!: The Untold Story of Rock-and-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, is the inspiration for Randy Johnson and playwright Cheryl L. West's exhilarating theatrical portrait of the great artist and her music. Cheryl is a longtime member of our artistic family and herself a trailblazing artist who has for decades been exploring the experience of strong African American women. I can think of no one more able to tell Rosetta Tharpe's story, and it's a great pleasure to have her back at Seattle Rep with Shout Sister Shout!.

Seattle Rep: How did the idea for a musical portrait on rock musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe come about?

Cheryl L. West: I had a copy of Gayle Wald’s book, Shout, Sister, Shout!, when it was first published around 2007 and I immediately thought it would make a great theatrical project. I mentioned it to a few theaters but didn’t get any takers. Fast forward to 2015. I was doing another workshop at Arena Stage where I met [director] Randy Johnson. I learned that he had recently acquired the theatrical rights to Gayle’s book! I had to mention how I loved the Rosetta Tharpe story. A few weeks later, he called and asked, “Do you want to work on a ‘Shout’ musical with me?” So, in a sense, it took a decade, but I finally got the opportunity to write the Rosetta story.

SR: What moments from Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s life as a black woman trailblazer did you feel were most important to show in this production?

CLW: Oh, there were so many. Rosetta lived a rich, complex life, but a life often starved of understanding and shrouded in loneliness. It’s a challenge to encapsulate such a flamboyant life in two hours. She was a musical prodigy, learning to play piano and guitar starting at four years of age. Like my family, Rosetta was Southern-born and Christian-raised. She loved music, often blending jazz, blues, and gospel, much to the chagrin of gospel purists. Her love of all music and her refusal

to be pigeonholed caused her to be shunned by some church congregants who thought the music she played was akin to the devil’s music. For me, it was important to show a woman living out loud, a woman who was joyful, bold, and ambitious despite enormous criticism and searing heartbreak. Rosetta blazed her own path, influencing and inspiring many in the process. By telling her story, I’m hoping an entire new generation and fan base will come to appreciate the gifts she gave us through her musicianship. I hope her story empowers some other young person to make the music they hear in their soul and the bravery to then share it with the world. My quest is to continue creating shows that explore unsung heroes/heroines whose lives are examples – roadmaps to walking strong on one’s courage journey.

SR: As Seattle Rep’s most-produced living playwright, tell us a bit about your writing process and your experience working with us over the years.

CLW: It’s been a gift and a true blessing to have an artistic home, a theater that has supported me for almost three decades. My first show at Seattle Rep was Holiday Heart in the early 90s. Doug Hughes and Dan Sullivan were the organization’s leaders at the time. I have been produced by every Seattle Rep Artistic Director since, and I’m truly grateful.

For me, writing is similar to creating a big vat of sumptuous, linguistic gumbo. Basic ingredients: dogged curiosity, a rather empathic imagination, and a willingness to always employ that pesky question, "What if?" After which I proceed to throw in my favorite theme ingredients – the mysteries of family, identity, ethnicity, and how any one or more might ricochet against contemporary American society. Upon simmer, I taste and stir in an element of surprise, a few thrills, a bit of whimsy, then cover

it with a lot of love and massive revisions. Eventually, after silencing the inner critic, I offer up my creation to the world. And that’s my recipe for being a writer for 30-plus years.

SR: Which other musicians inspire you?

CLW: I’m a great lover of music. All kinds. I actually write to music – old-school soul, blues, and gospel. It’s hard to narrow my musical tastes, but recently I’ve been grooving

to Esperanza Spalding, Lizz Wright, Lizzo, Bob Marley, Tracy Chapman. And the list goes on…

SR: What do you hope audiences feel upon leaving the theater?

CLW: Like Rosetta, I want to leave an audience with joy and perhaps a deeper realization that there’s power in love, however it comes “packaged.” And hopefully, people will be intrigued enough to explore more about this great trailblazer.

big vat of sumptuous, linguistic gumbo"

Memoriam

In Memory of Andrew Lon Willhelm

Andrew Lon Willhelm (1971–2019) was Master Electrician in the Bagley Wright Theater from January 1999 until August 2019, when the end of his two-year battle with cancer forced him to step away from the work he loved and the theater he called home. During his 20 years here, Andy brought power and light to more than 100 shows on the Bagley stage. Seattle Rep is also where Andy met his wife, Verhanika, a past Production Management Intern, and where he brought their young son, Ronan, to begin sharing with him the magic of theater. Andy was known for inspiring his team to achieve the highest standards in technical theater, demonstrating a level of dedication and professionalism that made others want to meet his high expectations. Whether mentoring interns or working with award-

winning designers, he built collaborative relationships that aligned theater’s artistry and technical elements to fully support the work on stage. Andy served as president of IATSE Local #15 for two terms, representing his colleagues in union negotiations, but with his wit and playful warmth, he also brought people together in so many other ways—from creating deep friendships and family outings with his crew mates to seasonal Peep jousting in the shop. Andy treated everyone around him with respect, creating a feeling of family among the Bagley crew and contributing to the camaraderie of the entire Seattle Rep staff. We feel his absence deeply, and hold Verhanika and Ronan in our hearts.

Thank you to our production sponsor, DLA Piper, for lending a hand!

Andrew Willhelm and his son, Ronan. Photo by Verhanika Willhelm.

At DLA Piper, giving back to the communities around the world where we live and work is just part of who we are. Whether we’re sponsoring the arts, sports, children and family programs, education, or healthcare initiatives—or anything in between—we’re proud to lend a hand to local causes that are making a difference.
