Strategic Planning Workshop with the Brazos Valley SHRM chapter Presented by: Sherry Johnson, SHRM-SCP, CAE; SHRM Field Services Director [AR, LA, MO, MS, OK, TX]

PRESIDENT’S PIECE

A new year!

I’m excited about the opportunity to serve as President of BVSHRM in 2018. I believe the chapter is strong and I hope that going forward we can make it even stronger. Members donated clothes for Project Unity, volunteered time to the Ringer Library, and raised money for the Salvation Army; which we financially matched. The chapter provided quality presenters for our monthly luncheons. I plan to continue this in 2018 with more of an emphasis on strategic programs. Once again BVSHRM received the SHRM Platinum award for 2016. I am very proud of our organization, and I’m looking forward to the New Year.

Regards,

Kris Lorch

2017 Tax Act Payroll Withholding Changes By February, many people should begin seeing more money in their paycheck, since most will be paying 1 percent to 4 percent less in federal taxes. Payroll taxes paid into Medicare and Social Security will stay the same. The enactment of the 2017 tax act, which President Donald Trump signed into law on Dec. 22, means the IRS will issue revised tax withholding tables for employees' paychecks. The IRS is preparing guidance on payroll withholding for 2018, and expects to issue initial withholding guidance (Notice 1036) in January reflecting the new legislation. Once the IRS releases the new withholding tables, employees will need to fill out a new Form W-4. Previous W-4 forms asked employees if they were married and about the number of children in their family. The new tax bill eliminates those exemptions, so the old W-4 will be invalid.

IRS Announces Higher Standard Mileage Rate for 2018

IRS sets standard mileage rates for business activities of 54.5 cents per mile

The deductible business mileage rate is increasing 1 cent per mile as of Jan. 1, 2018, the IRS announced.

The IRS issues optional standard mileage rates that employers and taxpayers can use to calculate the deduction for operating an automobile for business reasons, as well as for charitable, medical or moving purposes. The new standard mileage rate is the amount a U.S. taxpayer and companies can deduct on a 2018 tax return for recorded business miles in a personal vehicle.

Beginning on Jan. 1, 2018, the standard mileage rates for the use of a car (also a van, pickup or panel truck) will be:

• 54.5 cents for every mile of business travel driven, up 1 cent from the rate for 2017.

• 18 cents per mile driven for medical or moving purposes, up 1 cent from the rate for 2017.

• 14 cents per mile driven in service of charitable organizations, unchanged from 2017.

The standard mileage rate for business is based on an annual study of the fixed and variable costs of operating an automobile. The rate for medical and moving purposes is based on the variable costs.
