PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE What a wonderful time to be living in the mountains. Most

of our visitors, having enjoyed our valley, have re-turned home and it’s quiet here again. Fall weather has arrived with warm days and cool nights. My sympathy goes out to the flat landers who are deal-ing with the extreme heat. It’s a good time to get back in the quilting groove. There are so many things still to get done, especially with the holidays so near. Anyone else want to do a mystery quilt? After seeing the variety of quilts created by Cathy Farris and her students, I’m encouraged to try one. It seems like great fun. The 12 hour time frame is a bit intimidating, but I’ll bet we could figure some-thing out. We have had excellent speakers this year. Thank you. Cathy. Be sure to complete the questionnaire about programs and/or workshops. Let us know what you would like to have presented at Guild. Turn the form in with your membership renewal. BUSY BEARS QUILTING GUILD MINUTES FOR SEPTEMBER 2010

President Bonnie Snell called the meeting to order, and thanked the ladies that brought the delicious re-freshments. Bonnie also thanked the ladies that setup, and the ladies who stay after to help clean up. And she thanked the ladies who brought refreshments and gifts for the mini raffle, and reminded them to get an extra ticket. She verified that everyone got their extra tickets for bringing guests, and wearing a name badge. Guests get one ticket, bring a new member you get two. They go in the mini raffle. Bonnie asked if there were any corrections to August minutes. A motion by Betty Clark to approve, and sec-onded by Sharon DeSande. Motion approved.

MEMBERSHIP – New member, Roseanna LaBrie, and Karen LoPresti renewed her membership. Guests were Carol Sterling, Mary Langston, and Susie Hargreaves. TREASURER’S REPORT – Bonnie asked if there were any corrections to August minutes. There was a motion

by Lynn to approve, and a second by Sharon DeSande. Motion approved.

FRIENDSHIP GROUPS – Betty Heller, nothing to report this month.

NEW BOARD – Maggie Regalado is still filling vacancies. At this point we have Carol Henderson, President,

Heidrun Kibbey, 1st Vice President, Lorraine Taylor, 2nd Vice President, Mo Franks Secretary, Wendy Green

Treasurer. There are more of the committee positions to be filled. Please notify Maggie if you are inter-

ested in serving.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS – Lorraine has a form, and would like your input for up coming programs, please take some time and fill it out. (It’s on the back of the entry form). Next month is Silent Auction. Cathy Ferris is our program tonight. Comfort quilt workshops, cancelled on Tuesday. October workshop will be a UFO work-shop. Cathy Ferris started her Mystery Quilt workshop in 2004 for a homeless shelter. Value is the most impor-tant design work in your quilt. She shared her beautiful quilts, and some mystery quilts her students have submitted. Her son had passed away at 27 while battling a brain tumor since 3 years old. So in 2004 quilting became her favorite pass time. Please get your magnifying lights ordered from Bonnie so she can order. QUILTS CHALLENGE – Maggie and Jill Gilham have the fabric for the 2011 challenge. See them for the Kits. The instructions will be in the newsletter. And in the kits. COMFORT QUILTS - Janet Walz is sick, workshop cancelled. SUSHINE/SHADOWS – Rosie Silva has a daughter n law who is undergoing a Kidney Transplant. JoAnn Mark had a grandson named Augustine.

PROMISE QUILTING MEETING – Last Thursday of the month. PHILANTHROPY – We are still collecting pop tarts and food for the church. The relay for life made $297.00 on their quilt, and Loretta Castelluccio won it. She sent it to a cousin who is dealing with cancer.

COMFORT QUILTS

We are having a Comfort Quilt Workshop in October on the Tuesday after our Monday Guild Meeting in place of UFO workshop. The UFO workshop (unfinished personal projects) will be changed to November. Please join us at the Methodist Church at 9:30 am till 3:00 pm or whatever time you can be there. I have quilts to sandwich and, also, fabric to cut for a quilt. As I often say it is a good way to learn easy quilt patterns. I will bring two large cut-ting mats, irons and ironing boards. Bring your machine and notions and your lunch. We also order sandwiches from Mt Munchies near Stater Bros. It is always a fun get-together ! Our Cut Up Friendship Group is meeting in October at my home on Wednesday the 13th. We will be sorting through the chenille deciding what to keep for Comfort Quilts and the Silent Auction and what to give away. We can use help from any of you. We will start at 10 am. We will have bins of chenille throughout my home ! ! ! ! Bring your lunch and I will, also, have munchies to share. I am not cleaning house till Thursday after everyone leaves ! ! ! ! Thanks ! ! ! RAFFLE BASKETS

I want to thank everyone again for all their help with the baskets. Without all of your help we would not have the great success that we had with all of the baskets. The grand prize in tickets sold goes to the Sewing basket. The Chocolate basket was a close second with the Kitchen basket in third place. All the baskets were so beau-tiful and all I can say is all of the small groups ROCK. Thank you again for all of your help !!!!! Susan Meyers

SWAP A BLOCK

We had 14 participants in our Halloween swap last month and we’re looking forward to seeing those block made up into SPOOKTACULAR quilts ! We will be doing our final swap of 2010 at the October guild meeting, so pull out your CHRISTMAS fabrics and get merry! One SET is twelve blocks. They’re quick and easy to sew up, so if you want to swap more, make additional sets of twelve. Each set uses three fabrics—please use different fabrics for each set you make so we get plenty of variety. Each set should be in its own bag with your name on it. This is a counted exchange, so for every set of twelve blocks you turn in, you will receive an equal number of blocks to take home (one of your own plus eleven differ-ent ones).

STEP A: FABRIC 1—Center (theme fabric) cut 1 strip 4½”x 40” (you can fussy cut if you want). FABRIC 2--Sashing (complimentary fabric) cut 2 strips 1½” x 40”. With seam allowance, stitch sashing to oppo-site sides of center strip. Press seam toward sashing. Sub-cut into 4½”

STEP B FABRIC 3 —Cornerstones—cut 2 strips 1½” x 40” Using your sashing fabric (same fabric as about STEP A fabric 2) cut 1 strip 4½” x 40”. Sew cornerstone strips to opposite sides of the sashing strips. Press toward sashing. Sub-cut into 1½” units. Assemble one unit from STEP A and two units from STEP B, make one block. Continue to make 12 blocks. Your blocks will 6½” unfinished (finished 6”) Do not square up your blocks. Remember, they’re due at our Oc-tober meeting. TIPS Use small stitches (about 12 per inch) Be sure to iron seams as you go. Place each set of 12 blocks in a baggy with your name on it. Make more sets of 12 if you want to make a larger quilt.

SEW SOME CHRISTMAS BLOCKS AND SWAP WITH US !

PHILATHROPY

I have not received any suggestions from the membership regarding possible charities that the guild might consider for this years philanthropy. The board will discuss this and the membership will be advised of our selection at the November meeting. Again thank you for all the pop tops and to Carol Henderson for delivering them to Ronald McDonald’s house when she is down the hill. I noticed that the shelves were a little bare in the food pantry when I put our donations away at the meeting. I am sure everything we are donating to the food closet is helping a great deal. Thank you for your continued support of these projects. Ann McNicholl

OW I UDERSTAD!

Scientific Study Reveals Hypnotizing Effect A recent study indicated that fabric gives off certain Pheromones, that actually hypnotize women and cause them to purchase ungodly amounts. When stored in large quantities in enclosed spaces, the Pheromones (in the fabric) cause mem-ory loss and induce the nesting syndrome (similar to the ones squirrels have before the onset of win-ter, i.e.storing food), therefore perpetuating their species and not having a population loss due to their kind being cut up into pieces and mixed with others. Sound tests have also revealed that these fabrics emit a very high-pitched sound, heard only by a select few of breed of women known as ‘Quilters’. When played backwards on an LP, the sounds are heard as chants ‘buy me, cut me, sew me!’ In order to overcome the so-called ‘feeding frenzy effect’ that these fabrics cause, one must wear a face mask when entering a storage facility and use ear plugs to avoid pulled into their grip. (One must laugh, however, at the sight of customers in a fab-ric store, with WW2 army gas mask and head-phones!) Studies have also indicated that aliens have in-habited the earth, helping to spread the effect that these fabrics have on the human population. They are called FABRIC STORE CLERKS. It’s also been my experience that these same Pheromones cause a pathological need to secret these fabric purchases away when taken home (or at least blend them into the existing stash), and when asked by a significant other if the fabric is new, the reply is “I’ve had it for a while”.
