Course Description

This course will assist first-semester  students in their successful transition to the School of Business atCentennial College by giving them an opportunity to build self-confidence and enhance their ability toachieve their academic, career and personal goals.

This course was designed to help students achieve mastery of college-level learning skills, attitudesand strategies that they will need to be successful in their academic, professional/business careers andpersonal life. Emphasis will be on the development of effective learning and study habits, researchtechniques and self-management strategies.

Topics will include the following: time management, listening and note-taking, making the most of studying from textbooks, communications (both oral and written), problem-solving & critical thinking,test preparation, use of College resources, membership on a team, and research techniques (on-line).

Course Learning Outcomes 

The student will reliably demonstrate the ability to:1. Locate resources available at the college.

2. Identify their learning style and understand how that style can enhance their academic success.3. Apply effective note-taking, study and examination preparation skills.4. Prepare a practical personal time management plan leading to effective project management.5. Identify, investigate and organize the information necessary to prepare and write a business

research assignment.6. Demonstrate productive team membership when working in groups.7. Demonstrate problem-solving and decision-making skills using case methodology, critical

thinking, and questioning skills to analyze and evaluate material.8. Apply effective verbal communication skills using a standard presentation framework.

9. Create self-management strategies affecting personal finances, time management and stress.

Evaluation and Grading System

In consultation with the Chair or Dean, a faculty member or instructor may administer additional or alternative evaluations to fully assess the capability of a student.

When writing a test or examination, students must put their official photo-ID cards in full view for reviewby the invigilator. Students who do not have official photo-ID will be permitted to write the examinationwith a substitute photo-ID, but they will be required to produce photo-ID at the program or departmentoffice within 24 hours or the next business day following the examination, or else the examinationresults will be void.

Students with disabilities who require academic accommodations must register with the Centre for Student with Disabilities. Please see the Centre for Students with Disabilities for details.

Students requiring accommodation based on human rights grounds should talk with their professors asearly as possible. Details are available on the Centennial College website (www.centennialcollege.ca ).

If students are unable to write an examination due to a medical problem or unforeseen family problems,they should immediately contact their professor or program Chair for advice. In exceptional and welldocumented circumstances (e.g. unexpected family problems, serious illness, or death of a close familymember), students should be able to write a make-up examination to replace an examination missed.

Use of Dictionaries

Students are permitted to use a bilingual paper dictionary during tests and exams. The invigilator reserves the right to examine the dictionary for any supplemental notations. There is to be no use of electronic devices including dictionaries.

Course, Program or School Policies 

This course outline may be adjusted depending on the time allocated for guest speakers and in-classexercises.

Your professor may select ANY in-class or out-of-class assignment which may include but is not limitedto groups assignments, case studies, research and individual assignments, etc. for grading with or without prior notice. It is essential to BE IN CLASS and BE PREPARED!

Students are required to attend class. Assignments will NOT be accepted outside of class for gradingpurposes. In addition, students have 20% of the final grade allocated for class participation. Being late

may also result in a mark reduction.

Students must have their texts no later than the second week of class, as activities, assignments andevaluation begin at that time.

Test must be written on the scheduled dates. A missed test will be assigned a “F” grade. A student whomisses a test because of illness must phone the professor at 416-289-5000 at his/her extension beforeor on the scheduled day of the test to report his/her illness. The professor has the right to request a

doctor’s note.

Academic Honesty Academic honesty is integral to the learning process and a necessary ingredient of academic integrity.Students have a responsibility to be aware of and comply with standards of academic conduct. Academic dishonesty includes cheating, plagiarism, and impersonation. All of these occur when thework of others is presented by a student as their own and/or without citing sources of information.Breaches of academic honesty will be investigated and if warranted appropriate remedies and penaltieswill be applied, which may include a failing grade on the assignment/course, suspension or expulsionfrom the college.

Grades AppealStudents and faculty have rights and responsibilities in the Grades Appeal process. Students who needto appeal a grade should consult the Grades Appeal policy and procedures.

Progression and Academic StandingStudents are expected to meet the academic standards of their School or program. The academicstanding of each Centennial student is monitored during as well as at the end of each semester. Any

student not demonstrating satisfactory progress will be informed of his/her standing in the College andwill receive academic advising within their School. Unsatisfactory academic performance may result inconditional academic standing, probation or suspension.

Faculty Support

Professors are available to see students outside of class time. Students can contact professors viavoice mail, email, or through their program or department office. Information regarding how to contactteachers will be provided at the beginning of the course and is also available in the program or 

department office.

Campus Safety

Students must produce official photo identification at any time during the semester when requested todo so by any college staff.
