Economics is one of the largest and most prestigious business schools in Canada, and the University of Waterloo’s Faculty of Mathematics is the world’s largest centre for the study of mathematics and computer science.When you put the two together in a double degree program that rewards you with both an Honours Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Laurier and an Honours Bachelor of Mathematics degree from Waterloo, you will have a powerful set of credentials that will open the door to

outstanding career opportunities.Enrolment in this program is limited.

Admission is normally limited to Year 1 in the fall (September–December) term, meaning you cannot transfer into the program from another program.

You can register for the BBA/BMath program either through Laurier or the University of Waterloo, but you must meet the admission requirements of both math-ematics at Waterloo and business at Laurier. The academic component of the program is the same no matter where you register. The only real difference is that you partic-ipate in the co-op program through the university with which you are registered, and the degree you earn will indicate where you obtained your co-op designation.

about the programThe academic program for the double degree BBA/BMath requires a minimum of 10 full-time academic study terms and successful completion of a minimum of 52 one-term (0.5-credit) courses, normally taken over a period of five years. These 52 courses (which are identified and described in the Laurier Undergraduate Calendar at www.wlu.ca/calendars) must include 24 specified business-related courses at Laurier and 24 specified math-ematics and computer science courses at Waterloo. The remaining four 0.5-credit electives can be chosen from business, mathematics or any other area of study, and can be taken at either university.

Business & Mathematics at Laurier

Mingquan Zuo’s decision to come to Laurier was a fairly easy one.

“I chose Laurier because of the university’s reputation as one of the best business schools in Canada,” says Zuo. “I also saw

the co-op option as an excellent opportunity to get a head start on my career.”

Being a double major in the Business and Mathematics program at Laurier and the University of Waterloo has made Zuo’s university experience unique.

“Usually in university, we are steered toward one field of interest,” he says. “I viewed the Math and Business program as a great opportunity to diversify my skills and study multiple areas of interest.”

Aside from spending time between two universities, Zuo participates in the Wilfrid Laurier Student Investment Club, the University of Waterloo Toastmasters and is an avid tennis player.

After graduation, Zuo plans to either pursue a career in business consulting or work toward his MBA.

Laurier’s co-op advantageCo-operative education, which provides an opportunity for participants to integrate their academic studies with work exper-ience, has been offered at Laurier since 1976. Participation in co-op is compulsory for students in the business (Laurier) and math (UW) double degree program.

Students in the double degree program accumulate 12 to 16 months of practical experience through three to four work terms, and graduate in up to five years, depending on the number of work terms they choose. Participants receive training in job search techniques and assistance in finding employment related to their studies or career goals. They set goals for their learning and prepare a report for each work term. Each co-op employer provides supervision and evaluates his or her student’s performance. Laurier’s co-op coordinators conduct a work-term visit with each student and employer to discuss their experiences.

Laurier co-op positions have included supply chain positions with Canadian Tire, Research In Motion and Winners; management accounting positions with GE Hitachi Nuclear and Pepsi; insurance positions with Aviva Canada, The Economical Insurance Group and London Life; marketing positions with AC Nielsen Canada and McCain Foods; chartered accounting positions with Deloitte, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers; and finance positions with BMO Capital Markets, Deutsche Bank, Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan, Scotiabank and TD Securities.

A great learning experience

For Dr. Kim Morouney, keeping her finger on the pulse of what’s happening in business is one of the things she most enjoys about her role as an Associate Dean in Laurier’s School of Business & Economics (SBE).

“Lately, more attention is being paid to integrity, creativity and social and environmental responsibility – keeping a balance between what’s easy to measure (dollars) and what’s harder to measure (value),” says Morouney.

This translates into how she approaches her students and course material. “In everything I do, I want to encourage students to take responsibility, to engage themselves, to think creatively,” she says. This is also why Morouney is proud of the way SBE incorporates real life scenarios into business programs and courses.

Recently, Morouney took on the role of Project Lead for the Laurier MBA Blackberry Pilot. “It’s an exciting partnership between SBE, Research In Motion, Rogers and our students,” she says. The project explores how mobile learning brings the world to the classroom, and brings the classroom out into the world.

In addition to projects, program updates and her own courses, Morouney is also working with people across the university to create more international learning opportunities for Laurier students.

“We know our students will make a difference in the world,” she says. “We’re doing everything we can to get them ready!”

More attention is being paid to integrity, creativity and social and

environmental responsibility.
