The staff from CEC attended their Development Day at

Crumlin Road Gaol on the 21st September. The day began

with a short session on Mindfulness which enabled staff to

ground themselves and prepare for the day ahead. The staff

were inspired and motivated by each of the four speakers in

the morning and then worked on developing the CEC

Strategy in the afternoon.

From a nursing perspective, Garrett Martin, Deputy Director,

Royal College of Nursing NI, reflected on achieving

improvements by turning away from current ‘target driven’

health objectives need and embracing ‘outcome focused’

goals, to enable further advances in the population’s health.

Garrett stated this is achievable if the leaders in nursing

implement a partnership with the public to bring health and

well-being in a ‘true person centeredness’ way.

Liam McIvor, Chief Executive, BSO considered the

transformation of health and social care, and the challenge

to implement evidence-based teaching to enhance quality

patient care under the current financial restraints. He

accepted that limitations have to be acknowledged and not

ignored. Liam advised that at times, variance and flexibility

are a necessary component that needs embraced, to ensure

clinical education is delivered in the best possible way.

Clinical Education Centre Host Staff Development Day

Charlotte McArdle, Chief Nursing Officer, DoH

thanked CEC for their hard work especially in relation

to international nursing recruitment. She challenged

CEC to embrace the HSC transformation agenda to

support re-organisation, reform and an enhanced

health and social care system. The goal is to support

the population to stay as healthy as they can, and to

be able to avail of the correct health care when

appropriate. Charlotte highlighted the importance of

co-production between professionals and the public.

This concept was reflected by our final guest speaker

Joanne Fearon. Joanne spoke passionately

about her work in co-producing and

co-delivering work with the CEC as a person with

lived experience. She spoke from the heart about her

person-centred reality of having a mental health

diagnosis, and how her participation in the Wellness

Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) programme, delivered

by the CEC aids her continued recovery. As part of

her own WRAP Joanne educated herself about taking

ownership of her self-care, about working in

partnership with her healthcare professionals and

above all finding and holding on to Hope. Joanne

received a standing ovation for her inspirational

contribution to the Development Day.

In the afternoon, staff examined how they could

further support the nursing, midwifery and allied health

professional workforce to meet the transformation

agenda within our health and social care system.

Evaluations from the day were excellent and CEC now

have an early of draft of their strategy completed.

Consultation on our Draft Equality and Disability Action Plans 2018-23 – Your Views

The BSO is consulting on our draft Equality and Disability Action Plans and their equality screening. The consultation runs from 2

nd October to 29

th December 2017.

Our Equality Action Plan lists actions to promote equality and good relations. For example, we propose to

- provide information to staff who are carers on support available (including policies and other measures) that might meet their needs

- develop support for staff who experience domestic violence

- manage the changing of gender on HSC ICT systems for people identifying as transgender

- seek to use our influence with the Southern Trust to move to a home delivery service for appliances.

Our Disability Action Plan describes what we will do to promote positive attitudes towards people with a disability and to encourage their participation in public life. For example, we propose to

- promote and encourage staff to participate in Tapestry, the disability staff network, and support the network in the delivery of its action plan

- provide information for line managers for when staff declare that they have a disability (flowcharts, guidance, training)

- collate information corporately on any reasonable adjustments put in place as a central source of information that individuals and other line managers can drawn on

- develop a corporate approach to funding reasonable adjustments

- promote use of employment support programmes for people with a disability

- create and promote work placements for people with a disability

- use our influence to determine, together with Trust Contract Adjudication Groups, the appropriateness to ‘reserve’ suitable contracts

Consultation on our draft Equality and Disability Action Plans 2018-23 – Your Views

The law on procurement by public sector organisations allows for ‘reserving’ contracts in certain circumstances. This means that in those cases, only organisations whose main aim is to integrate disabled or disadvantaged people can bid for the work. It can also mean that the work under the contract is done through ‘sheltered employment programmes’ where at least 30% of staff have a disability or are disadvantaged.

We would like to hear from you as staff, as to your thoughts on both the draft plans and the equality screening.

The consultation notice has also been sent to our consultation list of approximately 300 consultees, including community and voluntary sector, other public bodies and organisations representing the various equality categories.

Click here to access the full action plans and the equality screening and for information on how you can provide your views.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Global Corporate Challenge Recognition Event

Thursday 12th October 2017 celebrated the end of the Global Corporate Challenge (GCC). The

venue was Pure Gym in Adelaide Street, Belfast. Hugh McPoland – Director of HR & Corporate Services, welcomed everybody to today’s celebrations and congratulated everyone on their achievements during GCC. Hugh also took the opportunity to recognise and thank those who took part and those who contributed to Clic Sargent charity.

Unfortunately, representatives from GCC were unable to attend the event, however, they did send their best wishes to everyone and sent over trophies, medals and certificates to help celebrate the day. Hugh firstly introduced Tashya Sendanayake from Soma Analytics who is Project Lead and Product Head of the Success, Not Stress initiative. Tashya provided an overview of the app and what it does. World Mental Health Day was on the 10

th October 2017 so it was an opportunity to

remind everyone how important it is to look after our mental health and downloading the app is one of the first steps we could do. This new app will help you build mental resilience – the ability to fully bounce back from stressful moments, and is key to living a positive, happy, and healthy lifestyle, and being “at our best”. Help us to help you and download the app. Please go to https://bso.soma-analytics.com and register.

As part of the GCC, we organised a 95 mile cycle challenge. The 95 miles target represents the average journey a family in NI must travel to receive cancer treatment for their young children/teenagers. Simon Darby, a social worker who works with the young children and teenagers who are going through cancer treatment and their families, took the opportunity to thank everyone who took part in the challenge and contributed to Clic Sargent. He

explained what the monies raised would be used for and how much it means to the families in getting the support they do from Clic Sargent. Simon explained that they rely solely on dona-tions to help run the charity as they receive no funding from the government. We are still waiting a final figure of what monies was raised, however, we believe that so far we have raised over £2,500 and with gift aid, this should bring the total to over £3,000. So a great big thank you to everyone.

So, on to the presentation. Hugh took the floor again (and with confidence so as not to make any memorable slip ups like they did at the Oscars!!!) commenced with calling out the big achievers from GCC. Medals and certificates were presented by Julie Erskine – Chair of BSO. First up was the presentation to the most improved over the challenge. The most improved from the HSCB was Norma McFaul from team Big J & the Blister Sisters – HSCB E-Health who had an 87% improvement. From BSO, Lauren Crowe of Keep calm and love audit – BSO Internal audit with a 57% improvement.

Next up was Most Active over the 100 days of GCC. The top 3 most active individuals from HSCB were as follows:

Adrian Walsh - HCSB Finance - 1,398 miles

Fergus Wills - HSCB E Health – 1,370 miles

Neil McCaig - HSCB Integrated Care – 1,313 miles

The top 3 from BSO were as follows:

Michael Hickland - BSO Legal – 1,620 miles

Declan McAleese - BSO Internal Audit – 1,393 miles

David Charles - BSO Internal Audit – 1,285 miles

A special award went to Michael Hickland for walking the most overall steps during the challenge with an average of an amazing 16 miles per day!! Fantastic achievement Michael.

Then on the most active teams. For the BSO, the winning team was 2 Legit 2 Quit from our Internal Audit with an overall distance of 6,334 miles.

The most active team in the HSCB was Absolutely Fibulas with an overall distance of 6,453 miles. So very well done to both teams.

Some great news to come out of the GCC is that together, the BSO/HSCB was the 5th most active in the healthcare & medical industry section out of 129 so congratulations. This really is a big achievement with a lot of competition. BSO/HSCB were 37th overall out of 836 organisations and really held your own around some much larger companies A special award was presented to each organisation recognising this magnificent achievement. Emma Heron (left) accepted on behalf of the HSCB

So, who has won bragging rights for 2017? (drum roll please!!) Well, with an average daily step average of 13,855 against an average of 13,274, bragging rights goes to the HSCB – again!!! Well done HSCB!!

It’s worthwhile at this point to consider what the benefits of GCC have been. Together over the course of the 100 days participants took 700,519,586 steps which equates to 278,581 miles. Only 20% of participants were exceeding 10,000 steps per day pre-global challenge, however, post challenge this is now risen to an amazing 83%. In relation to meeting nutritional guidelines, 20% are now meeting these compared to 14% pre global challenge. 66% are now getting the recommended 7 hours sleep compared to 50% pre-global challenge. Overall, the reported weight loss over the challenge was 245kgs which equates to a whopping 38.5 stone.

Finally, the BSO/HSCB would like to take this opportunity to thank Gary Ball and his team – Daniel, Colm and Jordan, from Pure Gym for allowing us to hold the celebration event in Pure Gym. We would also like to thank Virgin Pulse for their co-operation and support over the challenge. And last but not least, a massive thanks to Hugh McPoland for his drive and determination in bringing the GCC to us over the last couple of years.
