How to Love Sales…yes it is Possible

  I remember back at University studying marketing, and the sales component always seem to make students feel uncomfortable and demotivated. We all loved working on fantastic ideas on “how to” and creating plans and strategies to build brand and marketing positioning to drive clients to want to buy our products and services, however we loathed the idea of “selling” something. 30 years on…I love sales more now than ever…because I’ve learnt to understand the key to my initial negative feelings was fear…fear of someone saying “no” and me not knowing what to say without sounding defensive, desperate and negative all in one conversation.  Knowing that being defensive…desperate…and negative was not my intention, I embarked on journey of learning to truly understand how to enjoy communicating with people. My greatest lesson was understanding, “how” and “why” people buy and then adapting my style of communication by changing words I used and being more aware of “non-verbal” behaviors such as smiling and handshaking. It made such a profound difference to how I felt about selling that I embarked on sharing these ideas with people about 15 years ago. We have trained 1000s of business people are either solely or part responsible for sales within their business and each of their journeys has been remarkable. Here are a few shared ideas….  People buy your positive energy…not your productFocus on heightening your awareness on how you make people feel. If you’re not comfortable with managing objections and questions then you will create doubt within the prospective client mind. Positive language for the objection, “Don’t have time right now” may be, “I understand Anne…I’m happy to call you back later in the week…how suitable would Wednesday at 10am be”.

People buy how willing you are to help them solve a problemRe-focus your language around helping not selling. This means when you’re asked a question about your product or service, answer their question followed by “how suitable would that be for you”.
