Introduction to Fly Fishing Fly fishing is generally thought of as a sport best enjoyed in the setting of mountain streams catching trout or salmon. While these waters are great places to fly fish, you can catch a variety of fish and have the same great fly fishing experiences in your local warm water lakes and ponds. This class helps the beginning or novice fly fisher learn the basic principles associated with fly fishing. Learn more about more about the equipment necessary for getting started, how to properly set up a fly rod, become familiar with the basic principles of fly casting, and understand the use of flies and common fly fishing strategies necessary for catching fish in streams, lakes, and ponds.

Principles of Fly Casting If you thought casting a fly line was too complicated for you to master, you’ll be surprised to learn that with the knowledge of a few basic principles, a little personal instruction, and some practice, anyone can become proficient enough at fly casting to enjoy the sport of fly fishing. In this class, we review the basic principles of fly casting, learn common fly casting techniques used in a variety of fly fishing situations, and devote time to personal instruction and casting practice. Participants must bring a properly set up and functional fly rod to class for personal instruction and practice. To experience maximum learning from this class, the participant should also have completed the Introduction to Fly Fishing class. Twill A RoseStitch a full blown rose and leaves using an easy-to-do twilling stitch that resembles a string of small beads. The 7 ½” x 8 ½” design may be used for a quilt block, pillow, picture, etc. An additional small design and a small simulated wood flexible hoop is an added bonus included in the materials. Tatting with a NeedleThe first class introduces a delicate lace edging made with a long, straight needle, Perle #5 cotton thread and a simple “stitch.” In the second session we explore tatting with a ball of thread instead of lengths of thread. The use of a ball of thread allows continuous tatting and more designs. A small simulated wood flexible hoop is provided as well as additional patterns for medallions, “crittters,” creative scenes, etc. is included in a class handout. The first session is a pre-requisite for the second class. A complete tatting kit (except for scissors) is available at the first class for $25, payable to the instructor.
