BUSINESS AGENDAa membership publication of the Top of Virginia Regional Chamber

Our region’s b u s i n e s s … . . o u r business. As we begin to exit the ice and snow and enter spring, we look to develop and expand our businesses. We feel the excitement of spring not only in our lives but in

our business transactions. The excitement of spring permeates everything.

The Chamber shares in these feelings. The Chamber is concerned about our businesses and the community in which they operate. Often you hear the watch alarm in communities around the world to BUY LOCAL! It is used to encourage our consumers to look first in their backyard before making their purchases. Often people see the grass on the other side of the fence as being greener and better when they only have to turn around and see the opportunity right here.

Your Chamber also encourages our consumers to buy local. To give our local businesses the chance to provide quality products and quality service. The patronage of our local businesses provides jobs, support for our schools, the new little league uniforms, the parks for children to play, the walkways for people to appreciate the out of doors, and the activities for families to share.

However, many forget our largest customers. These are our individual businesses and government agencies. Their purchases of products, services, and resources affect everyone. Through their buying power, many local companies can grow and complement other businesses in our community. The Chamber encourages our local businesses, government, school

RAISING THE TIDEboards, and agencies to look first at our local businesses. Buy from each other! Be a true community investor by investing within our community. Some may say “Well, I can get it cheaper on the internet or I can save a few dollars by making purchases outside of the community.” However, are we giving support to our community right here? Are we helping our community provide more services and activities for our employees and their families? Are we continuing to create a great community which attracted your business to our area in the first place?

Buying local is for all consumers whether a family or a business. Buying local is having everyone support everyone. We are a strong community but can you imagine the possibilities. The Chamber is about business for business. It is about supporting our businesses to be successful so we can have the new little league uniforms, the parks for families, strong schools, and happy residents. Every business and governmental body has the responsibility to support each other. We – all of us - are the community. The old adage is true… ”When the tide comes in, all ships rise.”

Let’s raise the tide!!

The Uncommon Journey: Dynamics of ChangeJay Foreman recounts (with a great deal of humor) his unprecedented move from commercial banker to award-winning author...and with it, the lessons he learned along the way. These lessons, which are relevant for anyone, include inclusivity, humility, diligence and stepping outside of one’s comfort zone. Whether one is content in his/her life or career or is looking to make a scary change, this story will resonate with and encourage anyone who hears it. Hear Jay describe how he was inspired to follow his heart and make a drastic career change. - Sponsored by Mover Dudes and BB&T Wealth Management

On Thursday, February 26 the Chamber presented the Winchester Fire & Rescue Foundation with a donation of $4,000. The donation was a portion of the proceeds from the 2014 Valor Awards program. The purpose of the Valor Awards is to recognize local public safety workers in Clarke and Frederick Coun-ties and the City of Winchester who risk their lives on a daily basis to make our community safe and secure. Please mark your calendars for this year’s event to be held on Thursday, November 5.
