FORMATION SECRETARIATE

Gathering of Professed 85-88 at Monte Senario

Once again Monte Senario welcome the renewal gathering of friars from around the Order, an annual event organised by the General Council to promote ongoing formation. This time it was the brothers professed between 1985 and 1987, meeting on 4-25 August under the direction of fr Augustine M. Kulbis. 21 friars took part, with 2 from the Swaziland Vicariate, 2 from Zululand, 4 from Mexico, 1 each from Ireland, Argentina and Brazil, 2 from the Venetian Province's Indian foundation, 2 from Canada, 2 from the Italian provinces, and one each from France, USA and Australia.

For all the very different cultural backgrounds, all those involved were united around the Servite ideal as the focus for their renewal effort. Brotherly love was greater than any local culture, aiming always at the common good. This was our clear conclusion after exchanging ideas and committing ourselves to aim always for what is best.

SAN MARCELLO

New Prior Venanzio Ramasso In early Rome's general community of San

Marcello held its elections and chose fr Venanzio M. Ramasso, 63, as its new Prior. He is Procurator General of the Order, General Secretary for the Missions and Rector of San Marcello Church. He follows fr Carlo M. della Tommasina as prior. Fr Venanzio was provincial in Piedmont from 1967 to 1976 and was Vicar General of the Order over two 6-year periods.

EDITORIAL The welcome inspired

by Mary 1. Welcoming as ministry. Mary, the woman

who welcomes the Word and stands as a woman of her own times, lives the experience of God as liberator. This inspires us: -to strive for a continual process of liberation which will allow an Integration of differences and to live without conflict within a plurality of gifts. - to restore always and everywhere the centrality of the person, so that the other may live his/her own freedom and originality. ( .. ;) An awareness that the many forms of oppression are becoming ever more deep-rooted impels us to make our own the sentiment of Pope Paul VI: If you desire peace, work for justice. Therefore, the SeNite family seeks the establishment, at national levels, of Commissions for Justice and Peace, which will assist the servite brothers and sisters to be witnesses of reconciliation, of equality, of love and justice.

2. Welcoming as prophetic. Mary, called by the Spirit to realise her prophetic mission, has fulfilled a truly prophetic and revolutionary transformation by proclaiming, in her Magnificat, that the humble and the poor are the protagonists of the coming of the Kingdom.

The newness of her message, in this historical moment of time, urges us to re-examine the setting of our apostolates, abandoning the weight of those structures which are no longer vital, and responding more adequately to the new forms of poverty produced by today's world. We would bring to the attention of the whole Servite family the need to acquire a new vision of society and of relationships. It is necessary, therefore, to initiate some meaningful actions against prejudice, to re-new our language, and to restore the original reciprocity between man and woman.

3. Welcoming as openness to a variety of services. The welcome inspired by Mary and the value placed on diversity are a real challenge for the whole Servite family. Today, more than ever, we are called to realise a closer collaboration between religious and laity so that, through a sharing of charisms, our witness to the love and service of the Church will never diminish. ( ... ) Equally important is the contemplative vocation of our enclosed sisters, an aspect so important at our origins. The various forms of contemplative life witness that our solidarity with the world is not only on the level of service and measurable things, but also in the harmony of the divine and the human. ( ... )

MONTE SENARIO

15th Spirituality Week About 70 people, mostly sisters, took part in the

15th Servite History and Spirituality Week at Monte Senario on 26-31 July. The Week's theme was "Mercy: a Servite Marian tradition". Conferences ranged from Biblical reflections (G. Bruni) to historical synopsis (L. Crociani, G. Besutti, P. Branchesi, L. De Candido), and presentday dimensions (L. Pinkus) of mercy and compassion in the women's and men's branches of the Order of Servants of Mary. The participants were further helped by the experiences related by fr Stanislaus M. Ricci and Sr Teresa Bellan (Chioggia Servites). There was also a slide presentation by fr Fiorenzo M. Gobbo on Our Lady of Mercy in Servite art. Music, too was presented, with a concert of polyphonic Laudes (Praises) of the Virgin from the time of the Founders, directed by fr Valente M. Gori.

COLLABORATION BETWEEN

PROVINCES

SOUTH AMERICA

Inter-jurisdictional Chapter Everyone was pleased with the outcome of the

second joint Chapter held by the Brazilian Province, the Chile-Bolivia Vicariate and the Argentina-Uruguay Vicariate on 21-28 July at Porto Alegre, southern Brazil. (The previous chapter took place at Fatima, Argentina in January 1990). A total of 81 friars and sisters were present, with friar capitulars, numerous professed students and representatives of Servite Sisters and Lay groups. Heading the list were Prior General fr Hubert M. Moons, Servite Bishops Cazzaro, Grechi, and Lazzarin, Venetian Provincial fr Antonio M. Santini and USA guest fr Albert M. Gallegos.

The Chapter's theme was "The presence of the Order of Servants of Mary in Latin America in the light of the Santo Domingo Conference Document". The Prior General gave a introductory presentation, followed by a reports of Bishop Moacyr M. Grechi from his Chronicle from Santo Domingo. Fr Clodovis M. Boff gave a theological perspective on the Document, while fr Pedro M. Suarez located it in its historical context. Fr Roberto M. Braida gave a presented of the Document's implications for Latin America. Four work-groups followed the lectures, made up of people from Mexico, Brazil, Chile-Bolivia and Argentina-Uruguay. The groups compared the Document to their own local situations, focusing on Mission "ad gentes" and Inculturation; Pastoral Challenges and Option for the Poor; Formation and appropriate Evangelization in local culture; Marian devotion; Role of Women. A third phase of the Chapter set up five mixed study-groups to draw the various reflections together, with more attention to detail in the listing of Challenges and possible lines of action. Five papers were produced, debated and approved by the whole assembly. Each day's liturgywas directed by one of the regions, with much creativity and wealth of content. We celebrated The History of Salvation in the Latin American experience. During the prayers there was the temporaryprofession of Vows offr. Gilson M. de Lima Freitas, laybrother from the Curitiba community.

AUSTRIA-GERMANY

Third Joint Chapter

The Tyrolese Province and the German Vicariate held another Joint Chapter on 31 May to 4 June at Wuppertal in Germany. This follows the previous ones at Kufstein 1986 and Gutenstein 1989. The Prior General presided, and 13 friars from Austria and 6 from Germany took part. The North European SERVI1EUR President, fr Gerard M. Biron was there as a guest, and so was fr Michael M. Doyle (USA East) and two German members of the Secular Order of Servites.

Shared items occupied the first day, with fr Hubert M. giving a very interesting paper on forms of evangelization and new-evangelization that are specifically Servite in character. Practical enactment of the things mentioned in the General's talk was discussed in small groups. The day closed with a report on North Europe SERVI1EUR, with its immediate needs and overall plans. On the following two mornings, each jurisdiction held its own meeting, while in the afternoons the German friars took their Austrian visitors on a sight-seeing round, including the present priories at Gelsenkirchen-Buer and Dusseldorf, as well as the former Servite priory of Bonn-Kreuzbeg (1636-1802) founded by the "Innsbruck Observance".

For all the work done in Chapter, the most important features of the gathering were fraternal dialogue, mutual understanding and awareness between the two jurisdictions.

Joint Council: During the gathering, the Councils of Austria and Germany held a joint meeting, mainly for fraternal exchange. Practically, it was agreed to go ahead with a German-language missions publication for the Order, to hold a joint Retreat in 1994, and to invite the Prior of Pietralba/Maria W eissenstein to attend future joint Council meetings. The meeting also worked on naming a German-speaker to joint the Common Noviciate Team for North Europe SER VI1EUR at St. Ortaire.

FIES Reception and Pre-Noviciate Programmes Agreed

The Federation Council for the Italian-Spanish provinces met in Ronzano, Bologna on 19-20 July, called together by the Prior General as part of his canonical visitation of the Italian provinces. The purpose of this meeting was to finalize method and programme for welcoming new members and directing their programme of pre-noviciate. It was agreed that- besides each single friar and community's responsibility for vocations outreach -each single Province should designate a reception community (or, if necessary, two or more provinces designate one between them). Anyone showing interest in joining the Order would be received in that house, and a specific friar appointed to accompany and assess the candidate for however long is needed. The overall FIBS Federation Vocations Director would continue to link up the vocations apostolate around the different provinces.

When the timed was judged right, required documents would be prepared, included a personality-test, and a prospective candidate could then proceed to join the common Pre-Noviciate community of the Federation. This house runs a twoyear programme, during which the candidate has to forgo all other external activities and prepare properly for the Federation's Common Noviciate.

The Council also worked on consolidating the pre-Noviciate community at Rovato and the Isola Vicentina N oviciate community with further friars.

PROVINCES AND VICARIATES

USA EAST

Provincial Chapter and Retreat This year, for the first time, the Eastern Prov

ince held its annual Chapter and Retreat at the same time. The Chapter was held on the Monday afternoon and evening, and on the Friday morning, while the Retreat was held on the Tuesday to Thursday in between. The provincial, fr. John M. Huels, gave the opening address of the chapter on "Vision for the Future".

The retreat was directed by Fr. Frank Houdek SJ. He gave five conferences and three homilies, as well as leading three study-groups on the main themes of the week, Discipleship, Service, Mary, Fraternity, Hospitality, Poverty and Vocations. Besides the conferences and liturgies, the Retreat consisted in daily discussions in large or small groups. The structure of the week was judged to be very successful. The majority said they would prefer the Chapter and Retreat to be always combined in future non-elective years.

The Chapter produced three decrees, two of which were issued jointly with the USA Western Province. One concerns a common vocations policy between the two provinces; another is a mutual agreement on exchange of personnel. The third decree was on the closure of St. Philip's Priory in Chicago. This was opened in 1972, and served as the formation community for professed students attending Catholic Theological Union until1989. Then, with the formation program transferred to Our Lady of Sorrows, only three friars were left at St. Philip's.

New St. Peregrine National Shrine Chicago's Archbishop Cardinal Joseph Ber

nardin presided at Sunday Mass in Our Lady of Sorrows Basilica. Chicago on June 6th, during which he dedicated the new National Shrine of St. Peregrine Laziosi. The Basilica is the principal Servite church in the Eastern Province US and the oldest Servite parish in America. A great crowd of 1200 people, many of them cancer sufferers, joined in the dedication service. Prior Provincial fr John M. Huels, and Pastor fr Larry M. Choate concelebrated with the Cardinal.

6 COSMOS

At the end of Mass many cancer sufferers came forward for the blessing with the Relic of St. Peregrine. The preparation of the new shrine was overseen by a committee of Servites headed by fr Frank M. Falco, the director of ministries for the Basilica and St. Peregrine Shrine. The center-piece of the shrine is a 7-foot tall oil-painting entitled "The Miraculous Cure of St. Peregrine", by the 17th century Venetian artist Gregorio Lazzarini. The painting was professionally restored after the Eastern Province acquired its from the Christian Brothers at Manhattan College, New York.

The first National Shrine of St. Peregrine began in 1954 in St. Dominic's Church, a city parish suppressed by the Archdiocese in 1990. The Shrine was temporarily transferred to Assumption Church, until the provincial chapter of 1992 voted to set up the new shrine in its side-altar location in the Sorrows Basilica, Chicago.

Dedication of new church, Palm Bay

John Huels

On Sunday 13 June Bishop Norbert M. Dorsey CP of Orlando dedicated the new church of Our Lady of Grace in Palm Bay, Florida. The parish was founded in 1989 by fr James M. Dore, ftrst Pastor there, and his vicar fr. Tom M. Crotty. Initially the Mass was held in a local elementary school and in the Lutheran church, so that parishioners were strong in their wish to build their own church. The new church holds 500 people, but the space can be extended to host 975 on special occasions. It has eight clear windows at the sides of the altar, letting in natural light and a pleasant view of the palm trees outside. The building incorporates a smaller chapel, with space for two halls, four offices and six meeting rooms. Behind the main altar is hung the large bronze crucifix which originally hung in the chapel of the Servite theologate, Stonebridge Priory, Lake Bluff, Illinois

Symposium in New York A poetry Symposium is to be held in the Italian

Center, City University, New York on 17-18 November 1993 in honour of Servite Friar David M. Turoldo. Fourteen addresses with be given by leading exponents from Italy and the United States on "Ars Poetica: a homage to David Maria Turoldo". These will include Italian poet Mario Luzi, America translator Alan Mandebaum, and writers Furio Colombo and Vittore Branca. For the Servites, an address will be given by fr Camillo M. De Piaz on "Turoldo, man of contemplation and action".

ZAIRE Youth Council at Bunyuka

Our Lady of the Angels parish was host on 12-14April to the Youth Council ofBunyuka, held to given the local youth a chance to express themselves on things that concern their future. Various speakers attended, opening up the dialogue on "Formation and training people in society: to know, to know how to live; to know how to be" by Bishop Sokoni. Mr Deo spoke on "What can be done for Bunyuka at Bunyuka?"; Mrs. Christine Musaka spoke on "The Vocation ofWomen", and Mr. Prime on "Today's Project for Zaire andespecially for Bunyuka". Mr. Kibondo spoke on ''What hopes does the Church give young people today"?

We noticed from the dialogues that the young people are full of imagination, willingness and creativity, ambitious to build with Christ a new an peaceful Zaire.

However, the older population are not much aware or respectful of the wealth that is in their young people. This is cause by the ongoing socialpolitical crisis which is suffocating the country. People are living in extreme poverty, with barely enough to eat and widespread malnutrition. There is very little work for the men, great hardship for the women, inability to pay school fees for the children, with many children and young people just wandering around the streets.

In spite of these problems, we are confident that the young people will take full part in the reconstruction of Zaire and the Bunyuka area. For our part, we aim to set under way our "Project for Accompanying the Youth", to develop their sense of true freedom and responsibility. This will give new impetus to our young people, and open up

7

their minds and spirits. The project is included in the overall parish project, which has already set about its "Agricultural and Nutritional Development Project for Vuhimba" in favour of all local people.

Roch M. Boulanger seriously wounded

A terrible incident occurred at the end of July, violating the serious religious life of our Bunyuka community. Fr Roch M. Boulanger, 37, who has been in Zaire since the mission's foundation in 1988, was seriously wounded in a machete attack by one of the professed. The lead-up to the episode was that the formation community had asked professed brother Jean-Maurice to leave the community temporarily while they investigated some serious doubts about his suitability. This was just a short time before he was due to be solemn professed.

The young man went berserk. On the night of 29 July while everyone was asleep, he set fire to the two cars in the community garage. When fr Roch M. rushed out to deal with the spreading fire, he was viciously attacked by Jean-Maurice with an iron bar across his head, and then repeatedly hacked with a machete around his arms and body. Screaming for help and trying to escape, fr Roch was savaged even more, and his arm and legs broken. At last other students and local people arrived and managed to overcome the attacker, who was taken away by the police. People were going to kill the assailant, but Roch urged them not to.

He was rushed to Butembo hospital, where continual transfusions and a 5-hour operation helped to save his life and treat his many wounds. His left arm was smashed almost beyond repair, and many tendons and veins severed in arm and leg. On 3 August he was transferred to Nairobi, and a week later to Servite Sisters Hospital in J olimont, Belgium. Throughout this time he was attended by the devoted care of Butembo based Cuves-London Servite Sister Marie Catherine. A combination of his strong physique and excellent medical care has meant that there is good hope of recovery, although a complex operation will be needed to shorten and reconstruct Roch's left arm.

The Bishop of Butembo spoke of the sorrow and distress of the entire Christian community in the locality. On account of the scandal and alarm

caused by the incident, the Bishop on advice of his council, decided on 6th August to suspend the administrative activities of the parish and send all the Zairois students home (postulants, novices, professed) "with the purpose of seeking, with the major superiors, ways and means of a better project for the foundation the Order of Servants of Mary in Zaire". Meanwhile, the Canadian Provincial, fr Urbain M. Pelletier, who is responsible for the foundation, will be going to Zaire on 8 September with his Assistant fr Jean-Claude M. Baril and councillor fr Fernand M. Labbe. They will spend a month there to deal with the whole situation.

PHILIPPINES

Assault and Robbery at Muntinlupa There was an armed robbery at the Priory at

9pm on 19 August. The Prior fr Gino M. Leonardi and 12 pre-novices were arriving home at the Muntinlupa Priory from a religious service, when they were surrounded by a gang of 8 armed men with pistols and machine-guns. The pre-novices were taken hostage, bound and gagged, while the prior was forced to open all the rooms and drawers as the raiders went in search of money. Once they knew they had taken all the money, the gang raided all sorts of other property of the house. Then they made themselves a meal in the kitchen and calmly sat down to eat it! After this they took the community minibus, filled it with their booty, including the community's computer, typewriters, chainsaw, people's chains and watches, cameras and the community's deep-freeze contents. The minibus was recovered some days later. Fr Gino writes, "we were terrorised, and prayed to God like never before, in fear of our lives. But fortunately we have all come out of it safely".

* Another robbery took place las 15th February at Kisoga in Uganda. Fr Benedetto M. Biagioli wrote, "We were attacked at night by a gang of seven armed bandits. They put us up against the wall and robbed us of everything they could take, including the mission truck. Fortunately they were apprehended during their flight by the police. Two were arrested and we got our truck back. Nothing else that was stolen found its way back to us, including all the money that was taken. Still, we were spared our lives, and we thank God for that."

UGANDA

50th Jubilee for Fr. Pat O'Connell On 23 April our Kisoga Parish joyfully cel

ebrated the Golden Jubilee of priestly ordination for fr Patrick M. O'Connell, 74, prior of Servite community and assistant Parish Priest. Archbishop E. Wamala of Kampala joined us for the festivities, along with a great crowd of priests and local parishioners. Fr Patrick has been at Kisoga for just over a year, but he is already well known and appreciated around the parish - he has a wonderful gift of easy communication with people. He is an Irishman who spent much of his life in the English Province's communities in England and Scotland, before transferring to the Swaziland missions in 1967. Normally, at 74 years of age a friar is expected to be slowing down, taking it easy. Not so with Fr Pat! he has moved to Uganda at 73, where he continues to move around like a youngster. And like a youngster he is happy in his work!

MEXICO

Vicarial Chapter and Studies Directory

Benedetto Biagioli

The Mexican Vicariate held its non-elective Vicarial Chapter on 19-23 April, taking up various important strands of the life of the vicariate. The main task was the revision and revitalization of our secretariates in the vicariate, as we move towards become a full Province in the Order.

Bogota Parish: When the Order came to the Archdiocese of Bogota (Colombia) in 1990, the Vicar Provincial at the time accepted responsibility for an unfinished chapel, with a view to its becoming the parish church of a new parish. Now the Vicarial Chapter has agreed to the Order assuming thee Parish of La Pales tina in Bogota during the coming year.

"Ratio Studiorum": The Formation and Studies Secretariate of the Vicariate has drawn up a Directory for initial formation for our students; the Directory even contains booklists and theme headings for pre-ordination exams, confessions faculties etc. The Vicarial Chapter approved the text "ad experimentum", allowing for its gradual development in the light of practical application.

Professions and Noviciate: On 31 July in Aguascalientes, the following men made their first profession of vows: frs Tulio M. Fermindez, Jose

COSMOS

Pablo M. Cabrera, Ismael M. Hernandez, Ernesto M. Ruvalcaba, Alfonso M. Paz, Jose M. Rojo, Rafael M. Jaimes. The Vicar Provincial, fr Felipe M. Mariscal, presided at the profession, with many friars, sisters, relations and friends in attendance. On the same day a group of men began their noviciate: Ruben Bello Enriquez, Manuel De Luna Martinez, Moises Jaramillo Martinez, Ricardo Saucedo R. and Gabriel Zuniga Rodriguez.

Sisters' Final Vows: The Naples Servite Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows celebrated final profession for six Mexican sisters on 7 August: they are Sisters M. Dolores Flores Zapata, M. Elizabeth Torres Martinez, M. Imelda Mangufa Padilla, M. Ruth Guardado Enriquez, M. Teodora Romo Macias and M. Petra Martinez Martinez. A week later, on 18 August, seven Mexican novices made their ftrst profession of vows in the same congregation.

HUNGARY

Return of Eger Property After years of legal process, the Servants of

Mary have been returned their property in Eger, Hungary during the first week of August. Almost all the property is involved, including the Parish Church of Our Lady of Sorrows and the extensive priory on the street named after Servite Friars Szaicz Leo. All this is thanks to the untiring efforts of Hungarian Servite fr Elek M. P6ka. From the 1st August, then, the community is able to dispose of not only the wing which served as Parish rooms and residence for the Florence Servite Sisters, but also the other wing- until recently the city museum's depot, and the house which is located behind the church. And so, in August, the community came together, with fr. Elek Poka, fr. Bertalan Bernath (who ended his noviciate in March -COSMO 3.1993.10) and fr Philippe Van Dael, the Belgian friar who has been in Hungary since last year. There are also two Hungarian postulants, making up the first Hungarian community of Friar Servants of Mary after 40 years of interruption.

The three Florence Servite Sisters of Our Lady of Sorrows moved in 12 June to a small house opposite the priory which they acquired recently. Alongside the friars, they will collaborate in running the parish which is about to consigned to the Servites, after being directed for many years by the secular clergy.

CZECH REPUBLIC

Priory Restoration Our large and famous 18th century Servite

Priory in Nove Hrady, S. Bohemia, saw restoration work begin last winter. The project is so extensive that practically only the ancient wall remain standing, and the whole project will cost over a million dollars. Contributions have been coming in from many places, not least from the Tyrolese Province. Servite Friars Bonfilius M. Wagner (TIR), Vittorio M. Antollovich (YEN) and Kasimir M. Jindra (Czech) and our future candidates have been living in different place up until recently. From next winter, however, when one wing of the priory will be ready and we shall be able to live together as a community. bring our conventual presence in former Czechoslovakia back to life. Beside two aspirants to the Order who have been in Italy since last May in preparation for pre-noviciate acceptance, there are another 5 candidates who would like to join the Order.

The pastoral life here shows signs of great hope: at Easter 20 people were baptized, including several adults; religious marriages are increasing, now that they are recognized by civil law since November 1992.

ALBANIA

Church and Parish Assigned in Valona

In a letter dated 3 March, the Apostolic Nuncio to Albania, Mgr. Ivan Dias, officially consigned care of the Parish of St. Aloysius Gonzaga to the Servants of Mary, along with its priests-house in the city of Valona. Pastoral care in the extensive neighbourhood is now Servite responsibility, where previously there had not been any priest at all. The Piedmontese Provincial, fr Bruno M. Castricini, had requested this assignment in the name of the Italo-Spanish Federation of Provinces, given that all Albanian arrangements between the Order and the Holy See were unwritten verbal ones.

In his letter, the Nuncio writes, "With great plea:;ure I have noted you intention to strengthen you present Servite involvement by sending another Italian friar to join fr Giovanni M. AUSTRALIA International Aboriginal Year

There is no "developed" or "first -world" country where the presence of indigenous people is felt as strongly as in Australia. We rub shoulders every day with the Aboriginals in our cities and neigllbourhoods and especially in rural areas. They are the oldest race on the face of the earth -there is evidence for their presence going back 40,000 years! Yet they were dispossed b.y European colonisation and have been made aliens and paupers in their own land.

On May 27th the Catholic Church in Perth made a liturgical gesture towards a "New Partnership" with the Aboriginals. Servite friars and sisters joirled ir1 a Mass ir1 a packed cathedral, with Bishop Robert Healy presiding. The Mass was prepared by the Catholic aborigine community. As everyone entered the cathedral they ·passed through the smoke-screen of burning eucalyptus leaves, a native purification ritual. The people's flag was brought in procession to the accompanying sound of the rythmic rattle of boomerangs. The upper part of the flag is black, the aborigines' own colour, while its lower part is reed to match the red Australian desert; ir1 the centre is a splendid yellow sun. The congregation was called to hear the Gospel by a young Aboriginal musician playing the didgeridoo, a long hollow tree branch.

COSMOS

In a specially prepared "homily'' an old Aboriginal decried the destruction of their culture over the last 200 years, with their land being exploited for minerals and their people the object of prejudice, even within the Church. All liturgical ministries were performed by the aborigine community, women and men alike. At the conclusion, the bishop spoke of his great desire for reconciliation between the races, and nobody present would disagree with him.

CANADA International Congress in Quebec

The Second Congress of the Wider Servite Family took place at Pavillon Sairlt-Philippe, Quebec ir1 Canada on 4- 10 July. It was staged on the campus of Sairlt Augustirl Seminary, which gave welcome to 250 Servites from all over the world. The Servite Order, with about 1,000 friars in many countries around the world, also comprises about 20 religious congregations of women, about 15 monasteries of enclosed nuns, two secular institutes and numerous fraternities of the secular order (lay members), not to mention other branches and groups in many different countries.

Representatives from all these parts of the Servite "family'' gathered together for the first time in the New World, for a week of genuine fraternal life and sharing, taking as their theme, "Welcome, ir1 the spirit of Mary''. This theme permeated all the talks, group reflections and prayers througllout the week. The gymnasium of St. Philip's became the Congress Hall, with sirllultaneous translati~n equipment making everything tmderstandable m French, English and Spanish. The Congress was judged a great success, accordirlg to many of the participants.

Here is an outline of the Congress progran1me:

Sunday4July: arrivals and welcome at Pavilion Sairlt Philippe; supper, allocation of rooms around the can1pus residences.

Monday 5 July: Prior General fr Hubert M. Moons presides at the openirlg liturgy, during which 39 flags from the nations where the Order is present are carried in procession. There follows a presentation by Archbishop Maurice Couture of

COSMOS

Quebec on "The present Reality of the Canadian Church". In the afternoon there is a slide presentation on the ''Wider Servite Fanilly in Canada", and a conference by the Prior General on "Significant Developments in the Church and World ir1 the period 1989-1993 since the Last Congress". The Eucharist is celebrated in French, led by Canadian Provincial fr Urbain M. Pelletier. After supper each sector of the Servite Fanilly gives a presentation about itself.

Tuesday 6 July: Today's theme is "There was no room for them in the community irln". Scripture presentation is led by Sr. M. Cecilia Barbaresi (Encl. Nuns) and the prayer by Sr. Laura De Santis (Reparation Servites). There follows personal and group reflection on how the day's theme is reflected in your own experience and inspiration. In the afternoon, fr Nicholas M. Martin (ENG) speaks on "Migration of Peoples: a Challenge to Christians", with question-time to follow. The Eucharist is ir1 Spanish, presided by fr Thomas M. Xotta (MEX). At 8pm there is a concert of music and dance.

11

Wednesday 7 July: Today's theme is "At the foot of the Cross of Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister ... " The scriptural "Lectio" is led in English by the Ladysmith Sisters. In the afternoon Sr. M. Jenura BolT (Reparation Servites) speaks on "From the Magnificat the the Foot of the Cross". The Eucharist is led by fr Paolo M. Erthler, Bolognese Provincial. The evening is free.

Thursday 8 July: this day is our pilgrimage outing to Sairlte-Anne de Beaupre and the area around Quebec. Five coaches leave Pavilion Sairlt at 8.15am for St. Ann's Basilica where Servite Auxiliary Bishop of Quebec Andre M. Cimichella leads the celebration of Mass.

Friday 9 August: The theme is "With one heart they persevered faithfully in prayer with Mary .. and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit". The biblical Lectio is ir1 Spanish, led by sr. M. AJzira Ferreira (Encl. Nuns), and the prayer is directed by one of the NaplesServiteSisters of Our Lady of Sorrows. At 10.15 fr Aristide M. Serra presents "With one heart they were united in prayer". In the afternoon there is group work, an interval and then a debate on future developments for UNIFAS. Fr Ignatius M. Kissel, Western USA Provincial, leads the Eucharist in English. At 8pm there is a relaxed evening of entertainment given by different groups from around the Order.

September - October 1993

Saturday 10 July: 9am Mass is led by fr Bernard M. Barlow, general councillor. Then there is a presentation on "Servite Fanilly: pluralism of vocation and variety of culture" by sr. M. Crocifissa Remondi (Galeazza Servites). A draft closirlg message is presented by fr Bernard M. Barlow, with a closing liturgy led by the Prior General fr Hubert M. Moons out on the tennis courts of the Pavilion. Agairl the 39 flags are carried in procession, and after supper already some participants have to leave.

The Congress was an excellent vehicle for considerable fraternal exchange among the branches of the Wider Servite Family. Ideas were passed backwards and forwards, new friendships formed and old ones renewed, geographical and cultural frontiers were crossed, and the phrase "You are all brothers and sisters in the eyes of Christ" took on new significance. Receptivity and Welcome, inspired by Mary, was a reality!

ENCLOSED NUNS O.S.M.

MOZAMBIQUE

New Monastery Started Last February our Enclosed Servite Nuns in

Nampula, Mozan1bique began a new monastery in the south of the country. It is at Massinga, about 50 miles from the town of Inhambane. To begin with there are two Spanish Nuns and 3 Mozambican professed. These five "foundresses" have set up house initially in a former mission house 5 miles from Massinga, in a house that has no glass ir1 the windows, no water nearer than one hour away (they carry in the water on their heads, the usual way). The available food is just enough. The Nanipula prioress, sr. M. Juliana Calvo Ariiio writes, "We are working on the acquisition of some land to build a monastery ir1 the future. But it is people who are important, and I am convinced that those five nuns are already living the monastic spirit, even without a convent. They are in the vast monastery of God's creation."

Her letter continues, "We have been approached by the Brazilian Provincial to start a monastery over there. All our community prayed about this and we consider the invitation to be

reason for great joy. We have a great love for the Afro-American and indigenous people. How wonderful it would be to start a Brazilian monastery for the black people, daughters of the slaves of long ago. We hope we will be able, with the help of God's grace, to bring about such a foundation by the end of 1994. As is our usual custom, we do not wish to go into an already-built monastery. We prefer to set up in some small place, become close to the local people and customs. The essential Life then takes root within the local church to which the Lord sends us."

MARSEILLES SERVITE SISTERS

General Chapter 150th of Foundation

The Notre Dame de la Compassion Sisters were aggregated to the Order last year on 7 June 1992 (COSMO 4.1992.15). They held their elective General Chapter on 1-15 August this year at the Mother House in Marseilles. Fr Clemente M. Nadalet took part as representative from the Order.

The superior general, sr. Teresina De Carlo, was confirmed for a second term, as was her assistant general sr. Matilde Gente. The general councillors elected were sisters Stefania Mastrogiorgio, Michelina Algenii and Edwige Zerafa. This congregation was founded by Jesuit ·Fr. JeanFran~ois Regis Barthes on 16 June 1843, and so this yeai sees the 150th Jubilee of their foundation. There are presently 62 sisters, half of whom operate in France, the other half in Italy. One of the sisters lives in a missionary community in the Cameroun. The Chapter laid down a programme of spiritual renewal for the coming six years. Among its significant decisions was one to move out to the Missions. On their aggregation to the Order, a number of steps were achieved towards great mutual knowledge. The Chapter deemed it premature to be incorporating aspects of aggregation into the Constitutions and norms of the congregation. Instead, over the next six years the sisters will be afford ample opportunity to come to know the wider Servite Family. They will join in various initiatives on Marian spirituality, liturgy, missions and vocations matters. This will be easier for those sisters who live in Italy, but the ones living

COSMOS

in France will fmd it more difficult on account of the distances involved. This congregation's aggregation to the Order has given encouragement and support to the sisters as they move into great communion and collaboration with the rest of the Servite family.

RAVENNA SERVITE SISTERS

Renewal General Chapter The Ravenna Servants of Mary held their

Renewal General Chapter in Ravenna on 16-20 August 1993, taking the theme "Our Spirituality as Servants of Mary". An opening presentation was made on the theme byfr Riccardo M. Casagrande, Vicar General of the Order and consultant to the Ravenna Chapter. Preparation for the Chapter took the form of a community day together on the Congregation's official Birthday on 15th August. Local Servite groups took part in a presentation of the life and spirit of the Order including the married Ministries group, the Friends of Servites and the Ravenna Lay Group.

The General Chapter was a special moment in the life of our religious family, especially because of some of the happy or difficult taken there. One of the outstanding factors was the welcome presence of our missionary Italian sisters from Brazil, who delighted us by bringing the junior professed Brazilian sisters with them. The General Chapter authorized the opening of a new community in Brazil, "Santa Maria de Guadalupe" in Barra do Jucu, Vilha Velha in Espirito Santo. At the same time the convent in Filognano was formally closed after being empty for 3 years. Two groups of sisters living in Padua were formally recognized as communities by the Chapter - a development of a presence of the congregation there since 1981. They are the "Santa Maria Community'' in Via J acopo della Quercia and the "Santa Maria Community'' in Via Sacra Cuore. The Chapter also made adjustments to our Direc· tory.

. The comm~ty was inaugurated on 10 July, With a celebration at the Monte Senario Shrine led by Prior fr Juan M. Sperman. The theme of the celebration was "With Mary in search of True Joy". There were a good number of friars in attendance, and sisters from various congregations of t?e Order. and many lay Servites. Representing therr respective groups were fr Riccardo M. Casagrande (Vicar General) for the friars, sister Giuliana Benzoni, Ravenna Prioress General. The celebration included a prayer-service on Monte Senario, which included a procession down the ancient pathway to St. Martin's Cemetery, on our way to the new community, aptly named "Casa (House) Santa Maria". A symbolic brazier-fire was lit in front of the new convent by the prioress from a torch carried in procession down the hill~ side of Monte Senario. Finally, fra Ermenegildo M. Biagini from the friars' community on Monte Senario planted a new tree by the convent as a sign of new life.

The community comprises 3 sisters, sr. Marina Scacchetti, prioress, Alberta Dolcimascolo and Anna Ce!ani, and they are designated as a prayercommuruty. They are happy to offer hospitality to P.eople wishing to share their life of prayer, espectally brother and sister Servites.

GALEAZZA SERVITE SISTERS

Centenary of the Founder The Galeazza Servants of Mary honour the

centenary of their founder, Father Ferdinando Maria Baccilieri (1821- 1893) through the week of23-27 June 1993. It was a concentrated week of events and study, opened by Cardinal Giacomo Biffi in the Galeazza Pepoli Spirituality Centre. ~aleazza is a small town on the borders of the dioceses of Bologna, Modena and Ferrara. It was here that founding Fr. Baccilieri was parish priest from 1852 to 1893. Messages were received at the celebrations from the Holy Father and from Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro.

The Prior General, fr Hubert M. Moons came to the events. His special address focused on the Marian piety ofFr. Baccilieri. "Like Mary,' he said,

13 September - October 1993

"this priest let himself be continually evangelized by ~e G_o?d News and by devotion to Our Lady, by his mmtstry of preaching and his call of others to conversion. Like Mary he became a proclaimer of the Good News, and Evangelizer, making the Word he had received become a great proclamation, and the liturgy that he celebrated become true prophecy in the religious community that he founded." On other days of the festive week there was an address by Cardinal Pio Laghi on vocations pastoral outreach, and from the Bishop of Vicenza on education and teaching methods. The Archbishop of Pisa spoke on Catechetics and various b~hops on missionary matters, head~d by Servite BIShop Moacyr M. Grechi. All the talks were built around the. spirituality of Galeazza founding Father Ferdinanda M. Baccilieri. There were history lectures, too (including Professors Malgeri and Rumi), with attention to what it means to be a saint in the modern age. Each day had its times of common prayer, with the evening recital of the Dolour Rosary. Then there were concerts of classical and modern music.

The anniversary of Fr. Baccilieri's death was also celebrated on 12 July with a public display of ar~ork ~y E~o Weinert. The exhibition, "Egino Wem~rt s ~t m G~eazza" included panels of a beautiful VIa Mattis. Another celebration was a Day of Solidarity on 13 July. All these events organised by the sisters and people of Galeazza prov~d truly happy, meaningful occasions, making the Witness and message of their great "father and founder" better known and appreciated.

LONDON-CUVES SERVITE SISTERS

Centennial of Sisters in USA

It was in 1893 that 5 sisters left London, England to cross to the United States and teach in St. ~atthew's Elementary School, Mount Vernon, Indiana. They arrived on 8 September 1893, and the frrst Mother House was established at Enfield Illinois in 1895. Later the Mother House was trans~ ferred to Cherokee, Iowa in 1908, and fmally to Omaha, Nebraska in 1925, which is still the Mother House. The London-Cuves Servite Sisters are at prese~t engaged in many different apostolates, mcluding education, social welfare service, pastoral care for youth, child-care, care for the sick, for AIDS sufferers, for prisoners. The American Province numbers 132 sisters located throughout the United States from Massena NY and Carteret NJ

Many celebrations have been held around our communities to honour the centenary of our Servite foundation here. All the sisters gathered together at the Mother House in Omaha for a Retreat on 29 July to 3 August, and for the Centennial Provincial Chapter on 6-7 August. This gathering climaxed on the evening of7 August with a solemn Mass, followed by supper for the sisters and friends of the congregation. Prioress General sister Felicity McKeon gave the closing address of the Chapter. Other important visitors included General Councillors sisters Mary Peter Maloney from England, M. Development plans for the next three years were drawn up and approved, with detailed indications for ongoing formation. The overall guiding principle for the next three years is "Primacy_ of Faith in relation to Charity''. A number of specific areas of concern were highlighted: 1. Young People and Vocation: how to acquire greater sensitivity and awareness for dialogue with the young; 2. The problems of the older sister: how to appr~ciate the positive gifts ofbeing older; 3. Internationality: how to benefit from inter-change between cultures, and the fact that the Institute is now clearly international; 4. Discernment: how to exercise discernment in Institute internal workings, and in our contacts and service outside the Institute - in dealings with the Wider Servite Family, in liaison with other Secular Institutes, with the wider Church and in everyday society.

INDIA

The Birth of OSSM in Madras

On 17 February, at the Jegan Matha community, the Prior General, fr Hubert M. Moons, on canonical visitation in India, erected the first group (in this century) of secular order Servites_in this great Asian land. In the last century the Semte Secular Order was the inspiration for the Servite Sisters of India in their foundation, now the most numerous of the congregations affiliated to the Order. The initiative was taken by the J egan Matha Alayam, with special support from fr Susaimani, who for many years now has dedicated himself to this objective. The group consists of 21 members, including 5 married couples, who expressed a desire to live in the Servite way. The General Councillor, fr Bernard M. Barlow, gave them the Rule of Life and the Book of Prayers (translated into Tamil), the Rosary and a medal.
