Third Sunday of Lent Reading 1 Ex 3:1-8a, 13-15

Moses was tending the flock of his father-in-law Jethro, the priest of Midian. Leading the flock across the desert, he came to Horeb, the mountain of God. There an angel of the LORD appeared to Moses in fire flaming out of a bush. As he looked on, he was surprised to see that the bush, though on fire, was not consumed. So Moses decided, “I must go over to look at this remarkable sight, and see why the bush is not burned.” When the LORD saw him coming over to look at it more closely, God called out to him from the bush, AMoses! Moses!” He answered, “Here I am.” God said, “Come no nearer! Remove the sandals from your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground. I am the God of your fathers, “ he continued, “the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob.” Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God. But the LORD said, “I have witnessed the affliction of my people in Egypt and have heard their cry of complaint against their slave drivers, so I know well what they are suffering. Therefore I have come down to rescue them from the hands of the Egyptians and lead them out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey.” Moses said to God, “But when I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ if they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what am I to tell them?” God replied, “I am who am.” Then he added, “This is what you shall tell the Israelites: I AM sent me to you.” God spoke further to Moses, “Thus shall you say to the Israelites: The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. “This is my name forever; thus am I to be remembered through all generations.” Responsorial Psalm Ps 103: 1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8, 11

R. The Lord is kind and merciful.

Reading 2 1 Cor 10:1-6, 10-12

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers and sisters, that our ancestors were all under the cloud and all passed through the sea, and all of them were baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. All ate the same spiritual food, and all drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank from a spiritual rock that followed them, and the rock was the Christ. Yet God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the desert. These things happened as examples for us, so that we might not desire evil things, as they did. Do not grumble as some of them did, and suffered death by the destroyer. These things happened to them as an example, and they have been written down as a warning to us, upon whom the end of the ages has come. Therefore, whoever thinks he is standing secure should take care not to fall.

Gospel Lk 13:1-9

Some people told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. Jesus said to them in reply, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did! Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them — do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!” And he told them this parable: “There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?’ He said to him in reply, ‘Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.’”

Lectionary for Mass for Use in the Dioceses of the United States

Next week’s readings: Jos 5:9a, 10-12, 2 Cor 5:17-21 & Lk 15:1-3, 11-32

March 3, 2013 3rd Sunday of Lent

"A man had a fig tree growing in his vineyard, and he came out looking for fruit on it but did not find any. He said to the vinedresser, 'Cut it down.' But the vinedresser said, 'Leave it another year while I hoe around it and manure it; then perhaps it will bear fruit. If not, it shall be cut down."' Luke 13:6-9 As the vinedresser cultivated the fig tree, stewards are also called to cultivate the talents of one another. The truth is that talents not used are lost to us and others.

Make Your Lent More Meaningful The season of Lent offers us forty days to review our lives and focus on conversion and spiritual transformation. It is basically a spiritual “spring training;” a time when we go back to the basics of our faith formation through prayer, fasting, almsgiving and other penitential practices in order to improve and enhance our spiritual lives and prepare ourselves to more fully participate in the paschal mystery of Holy Week with a generous heart and renewed commitment to Christ. Consider some of the following ideas for making your Lenten season even more meaningful this year. • Identify some penitential practice to commit to every

day. • Make time for private prayer. • Reduce home energy consumption. • Make an extra donation to the poor. • Give up negative thinking. • Pray for the Church.

2012 Bishop’s Annual Appeal Christ Alive in His People

Now more than ever, our mission must continue if we are to meet the ever-growing needs of our human family. Although these are challenging economic times, together we can advance the work of the Church through our faithful support, each according to his or her means. Thank you.

“‘Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall cultivate the ground around it and fertilize

it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.’”

Luke 13:8–9 It takes years to foster a good liturgical program, develop solid cantors and choirs, or rebuild an aging program. There are times when others may be quick to complain with a snippy comment or a flaming e-mail. Sometimes sheer exhaustion and frustration set in, and all we want to do is tear our work out by the roots or just quit.

Jesus offers wise advice for such times: “Cultivate the ground around it and fertilize it. It may bear fruit . . . .”

I pray that I am cultivating the music program, and providing you all with good nourishment. If you would like to offer suggestions, or comments about the music program, please feel free to email me at [email protected].

Prayer O God, who knows the many seasons of our hearts, provide us moments of rest and moments of growth,

that we may always bear fruit, giving glory and honor to your name

Everybody Needs to Forgive Somebody

11 Stories of Real People

Who Discovered the Underrated Power of Grace

Forgiveness will unleash a power in your life that is underrated and often ignored. It is underrated mainly because it is underused. We fail to capture the power of forgiveness because we are afraid of it, because we have grown comfortable in our familiar wounds, or because we are sinfully stubborn. But the power is there waiting for us. This little book, and the eleven real life stories in it, will help you capture that power. Because everybody needs to forgive somebody. Please pick up your free copy of this book in the foyer of Church –

St. Cecilia’s gift to you this Lent.

Has this winter got you singing the SNOW REMOVAL BLUES? Probably not so bad for the average homeowner, but a little painful for the parish. Although our snowfall this season has not yet been significant, more of a nuisance, keeping our parking lot and walkways safe for you and your family is still our top priority. So far this winter we have paid $8,758.00 in ice & snow removal. OUCH! Remember that pennies for the parking lot jar? We thought we’d dust it off and bring it out again to collect spare change to help ease our Snow Removal Blues! Every little bit helps.

As always, your generosity is greatly appreciated!

“Continuing our Journey of Faith” Keynote address by Sister Julia Jamink, SJH Sister Julia, known for her deep faith in God, her great love for the Catholic Church, her wisdom and her joy, will help us rediscover the meaning of faith within a world invaded by an individualism that leads to living as though God did not exist. Both in the main talk and in the workshops the Sisters will strive to stir into flame the light of faith of those who in their daily journey seek to entrust their lives to the Lord with conviction and courage. As requested by Pope Benedict XVI for the “Year of Faith”, the Sisters will lead us in a public profession of faith as proclaimed in the Apostles Creed.
