IntroductionTraditionally, the phosphor materials are alkali-earth sulphides doped with Cu or Co.Unfortunately these materials are chemicallyunstable. For example, calcium sulphide willabsorb moisture and convert to calciumhydroxide [CaS + 2H2O → Ca(OH)2 + H2S].Thus, encapsulation is usually required forthese phosphor materials. This issue remainedas the drawback of phosphor materials in theirapplication until 1990’s when Eu2+ and Dy3+ co-doped aluminates and silicates were invented[1]. They are superior in term of luminescentbrightness, long lasting luminescence proper-ties and stable than those of sulphide seriesproducts. In comparison with the aluminate, silicates-based doped rare earth ions phosphors (e.g.Sr2MgSi2O7: Eu,Dy, SMS) have been shown tobe more promising candidates as host materi-als for long persistent phosphors. These phos-phors posses good chemical and physical sta-bility, multiple luminescent colours, excellentwater-resistant, excellent photoresistance andgood environmental capability [2]. However, their afterglow property was inferior to thoseof aluminate phosphors. Thus, it is necessaryto further improve its long persistent lumines-cence properties.Sol-gel is the common technique uses to pro-duce SMS. However, this process is complicat-ed and time consuming although the SMS pro-vides good luminescent properties. In thisresearch, solid state reaction method was usedin the synthesis of SMS phosphor. The reduc-tive atmosphere was generated by combustionof the phosphor in a graphite crucible. Thisapproach is less costly as compared to the con-ventional solid state reaction which uses a mix-ture of hydrogen and nitrogen gas. The effectof sintering temperature on its optical propertywas reported in this paper.

ExperimentalSr2MgSi2O7 samples were synthesized by solidstate reaction with stoichiometric amount ofanalytical pure SrCO3, SiO2, MgO, Eu2O3, andDy2O3. A small quantity of H3BO3 was added asflux. A nominal concentration of the Eu2+ andDy3+ ions, i.e. 1 mol % and 2 mol % respec-tively to the strontium amount was used withthe stoichiometric formula of (Sr1-x-yEuxDyy)2MgSi2O7. The raw materials wereweighed and mixed thoroughly in an agatemortar with the aid of ethanol to homogenizethe mixture. The mixed powder was subjectedto firing in a CO/CO2 reductive atmosphere(combustion of graphite crucible) at tempera-ture ranging from 1200-1300°C for 2 hours.

The samples were labelled according to theirfiring temperature. For example, SMS fired at1200 °C was labelled as SMS1200.

Results and DiscussionAfter sintering, the loose white powder in thealumina crucible became a compacted bodywith green-yellowish appearance as shown inFigure 1 (A) & (B), respectively. When the sin-tered product was excited under UV lamp (360W lamp, 254 nm) for 15 minutes, a blue emis-sion was obtained as shown in Figure 1 (C).

The difference between the emission right after UV excitation and its emission after 1min. is shown in Figure 2. The SMS 1250 sam-ple shows the highest intensity of emissionright after UV excitation and after 1 min. It isfollowed by SMS1300 and SMS 1200. Intenistyof emission after 1 min. is lower than theintensity of emission right after UV excitation, indicating the decay characteristic of the phosphor.

The SMS 1250 sample was chosen for roomtemperature PL measurement due to its highemission intensity. As shown in Figure 3 (A), anemission located at 466 nm is observed underUV excitation (325 nm) from the SMS 1250sample. This emission is attributed to thetypical 4f65d1

→ 4f7 transition of Eu2+. No specialemission peaks of Eu3+ were observed in thespectra. The Eu3+ ion alwaysgives a series oftypical emission lines in a spectral region of570–750 nm corresponding to its 5D0→7FJ (J= 1, 2, 3, 4) transitions [3]. This means thatEu3+ in the crystal matrix has been completelyreduced to Eu2+ by reductive atmosphere cre-ated by combustion of graphite crucible. Thespecial Dy3+ emission peak is not present, which may be ascribed to the function of thehole or electron traps and energy transportingof Dy3+ [4].

Figure 3 (B) shows the excitation spectra whenthe emission wavelength was monitored at 466nm. It shows a broad band from 250 to 450nm which peaked at 428nm. It is well knownthat the emission of Eu2+ion in a solid-statecompound generally shows a broad-bandcharacters a result of 4f65d

→4f7 transition. Theabsorption band at 428 nm is corresponded tothe Eu2+ absorption. In other words, thestrongest PL emission shall be obtained if theexcitation source with 428 nm wavelength is used.

The XRD patterns indicate that the diffractionpeaks in Figure 4 are matched well with thereference diffraction peaks of Sr2MgSi2O7 phase(PDF 01-75-1736), except SMS 1200. TheSr2MgSi2O7 phase only present as minorityphase in sample SMS1200.The concernedphase i.e., Sr2MgSi2O7 has tetragonal crystalstructure and belongs to P-421m space groupwith lattice constants a = b = 7.9957 Å and c= 5.1521 Å. No other phase could be foundfrom the dopants (Eu and Dy) in all three sam-ples, indicating that a small amount of dopedrare earth ions did not influence the phase ofthe SMS composition. There are other phases present in the SMS1200 sample such as SiO2 (00-051-1379),MgSiO3 perovskite (01-087-0686), alpha-SrSiO3

(00-036-0018)and alpha-Sr2SiO4 (00-039-1256). A quantitative study on the effect oftemperature on the amount of each phases andthe average crystallite size was determind byRietvield method. The amount of each phasepresent in the sample, crystallite size and theirrefined crystallographic unit cell parameter areshown in Table 1. The SMS 1200 sample onlycontained 2.0 wt % of Sr2MgSi2O7 phase. Thisshows that the sintering process was incom-plete at the temperature of 1200 °C. As thetemperature increased to 1250 °C, the amountof Sr2MgSi2O7 phase achieved 72.9 wt. %. Thewt % of Sr2MgSi2O7 phase slightly reduced to69.8% at 1300 °C.

Table 1: Refined crystallography unit cellparameter of SMS phosphors sintered at differ-ent temperature.

ConclusionsBlue colour phosphor Sr2MgSi2O7: Eu, Dy wassuccessfully synthesized using solid state reac-tion at 1250 °C with the aid of H3BO3 as flux ina reductive atmosphere created by combustionof graphite crucible. It was found that 1250°Csintering temperature is the best for photolumi-nescence properties in this system. The resultsobtained from XRD analysis indicates the pres-ence of tetragonal structure of Sr2MgSi2O7 (01-75-1736) and monoclinic structure SrSiO3 (00-036-0018). Blue emission at 466 nm wasobserved in PL measurement when the SMSphosphor was optically excited by Xenon lampat 325nm. This emission was attributed to the4f65d1 to 4f7 transition of the Eu2+ ions. Theexcitation spectrum was measured by monitor-ing the emission at 466 nm. The absorptionband at 422 nm could be corresponding to theEu2+ absorption.

IntroductionShape memory polyurethanes (SMPU) are clas-sified as smart materials in which they possessspecial ability of changing their shape throughthe application of external stimulus such asthermal and electrical change. The shapememory effect exhibited due to the thermalincompatibility of soft and hard segmentdomains in polyurethane in which they will seg-regate to form two separated phases [1]. Thehard segments form physical crosslinksthrough hydrogen bonding, dipole-dipole inter-actions or crystallization that enable the forma-tion of permanent shape while the other phaseacts as molecular switch that allow for the fix-ation of temporary shape [2]. In this study, polycaprolactonediol (PCL) wasused as soft segments owing to its meltingtemperature ranging between 50-60°C allowthe possibility to fix the temporary shape forthe intended applications in biomedical field. Inaddition to that, palm oil polyol (POP) was alsoutilized in order to replace PCL up to 40%molar ratio. The addition of vegetable oil in thesystem helps in reducing one’s reliance onpetroleum based products and varying itsemployment to wider applications possible. Ontop of that, vegetable oils are more attractiveby being economic and environmentalfriendly. In the present study, SMPU was pre-

pared viatwo step prepolymer method. Theproduced polyurethanewas characterized usingx-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronmicroscopy (SEM), atomic force microscopy(AFM), mechanical and shape memory test.

Materials and Method POP (MW = 900 g/mol, hydroxyl number = 120mg KOH/g) used in this study was supplied byRovski Industries Sdn. Bhd., Subang Jaya andPCL (MW = 4000 g/mol, hydroxyl number = 28mg KOH/g, melting point = 55-60°C) was pur-chased from PerstopPolyols, UK. Meanwhile,4,4’- diphenylmethanediisocyanate (MDI) (MW= 250.25 g/mol), 1,4- butanediol (BD) and cat-alyst dibutyltindilaurate were purchased fromSigma Aldrich (M) Sdn. Bhd., Petaling Jaya.

In the first stage, prepolymer was preparedaccording to modified procedure of Jana etal.[3] with feed molar ratio of 1:6:5 referring topolyol: MDI: BD. In the first stage, MDI andPCL were reacted at 80°C in 500 ml round bot-tom flask equipped with a thermometer, flow ofdry nitrogen gas and mechanical stirrer. Thereaction took place for 30 min before certainpercentage of POP was added and reacted foranother 2.5 hours with stirring speed of 100rpm. In the second stage, the prepolymer, BDand catalyst were melt-blended in Brabenderinternal mixer at 90 °C with rotor speed of 50

rpm. The mixing was continued for approxi-mately 20 minutes until the torque reachedplateau. The produced polyurethane was thenfurther compressed using hydraulic hot pressat temperature 160°C using 0.5 mm thick rec-tangular stainless steel mold.

Results and DiscussionIn SMPU, the crystallization of soft segmentdomains is one of the main contributions forthe shape memory effect to take place in whichit is responsible for the fixation of the tempo-rary phase [4]. In the current work, the SMPUsamples showed the existence of crystallinephase. This is due to the presence of twoprominent peaks in XRD diffractogram at 21.3°and 23.6° (Figure1) which attributed to (110)and (200) planes of PCL crystals [5]. The crys-tallinity intensity decreased with increasingPOP concentration due to interference of hardsegment domains that impede the crystalliza-tion of PCL crystals. Consequently, SMPU load-ing with 40% POP had developed into almostamorphous phase. SEM micrograph in Figure 2for sample PU-20 clearly indicates the presenceof two-phase morphology composed of softand hard segment domains. The AFM analysisas shown in Figure 3 further confirmed thepresence of two different morphology in which

the bright and dark region represent hard andsoft segment domains, respectively. The for-mation of bright region increased with increas-ing POP content suggesting that the hard seg-ment domains increase as POP content isincreased.

Table 1 show tensile and shape memory prop-erties of SMPU. The stress and strain at breakfor POP based SMPU increased as compared topristine SMPU whereas modulus decreased forall POP based SMPU except for 10% POP con-tent. An increase in hydrogen bonding andhard segment domains due to addition of POPallows improved tensile behavior. The modulusdecreases with increasing hard segments con-tent indicating that the samples are less rigidas more POP is introduced.

The shape memory properties of SMPU wereexcellent in the system up to 20% POP as canbe seen in Table 1. The shape fixity decreaseswith increasing hard segments content.Thiscould be due to partial crystallization of softsegments that is not sufficient to sustain thedeformed ring shape and an instantaneousshrinkage occurred once the constraint wasremoved. The lacking of enough restrictionsinduced by hard segment domains over chainslippage upon deformation could also con-tribute to the reduction in shape fixity[6].However, the shape recovery remains out-standing in samples up to 40% POPcontent. This may be due to the formation ofstable hard segment domains at temperatureabove melting point of soft segments crystalsand the presence of adequate phase separa-tion taking place in the system.

ConclusionsPOP based SMPU showed improved mechanicaland shape memory properties especially inSMPU system with 20 and 30% POP content.

This is due to the presence of sufficient amountof POP that appropriately assists in crosslinkingprocess in consequence of its large amount offunctional groups. The produced SMPU exhibitssufficient crystallization behavior in whichprominent for triggering shape memory effect.
