Current state of BIM in Finland (1/2)

• BIM is widely accepted and a normal process to do design in major architect or engineering companies

• Designers have ability to use BIM in collaborative mode, but it is not a normal way to proceed

• There are ”Common BIM Requirements 2012” available, which are quite often referred in Invitation for Tenders

• Too often there is no BIM execution plan – Designers do not know usecases for modelling

• Construction site is using BIM, if General Contractor has ability to use it(In most cases they do not have ability or interest)

• BIM in FM does not exist

Current state of BIM in Finland (2/2)

• We are in position, where hype has been over about 3-4 years and designers in major cities have done multiple BIM projects

• We are not anymore focused to softwares, but processes and methods

• IFC is used as a normal way to share information

• Lean Construction is coming

• Only a few client / buildingowner have an interest tothink differently

Dynamic simulation of energy and comfort is made according to the requirements, building model and service area charts.

• Every space is simulated, usage of architectural IFC-model

• Alternative simulations and comparisations for different envelopes, windows etc. -> beginning of LCC calculations

Collaborative approach can be done also in “normal” projects

Way of Action: Workshop –method

In Finnish Research Project “Rym PRE”, workgroup “Model Nova” highlighted a method: “Knotworking”

Knotworking is close cooperation between various actors and experts in connection with the design and construction process of buildings

Knotwork –session is held in a 1-2 day workshop, where people have well-aimed target which need to be solved

Knotwork –method researched/developed by Institute of Behavioral Sciences, CRADLE, University of Helsinki

• Windows and walls can be created in energy simulation softaware to have multiple variations for example different procents (%) on windows in envelope (or window types, shadings, blinds etc.
