• The NHS Core Learning Unit (NHS CLU) has delivered core learning programmes since October 2005 following the demise of the NHS University (NHSU).

 

• The Unit is now a hosted organisation within the National Health Service. Our programmes are funded by the Department of Health in England and are, as such, available free of additional charges, to NHS staff.

• The NHS Core Learning Unit (CLU) provides a curriculum of work-based training courses. The courses are transferable, accredited, nationally endorsed, as well as being mapped to the Knowledge and Skills Framework (KSF), NHS Litigation Authority (NHSLA), Healthcare Commission (HCC) and sector skills competencies.

Services and support supplied by CLU include

• Learner support – 5 days a week – 9 to 5 either by phone on 0845 330 6507 or by email on clpu@yorksandhumber.nhs.uk

– Services provided:

• Help with registration / log-in problems.

• Assistance with certificate / completion problems.

• Supply of learner guides to help users understand the system.

• Trainer support – 5 days a week – 9 to 5 by phone on 0845 330 6507 or by email on clpu@yorksandhumber.nhs.uk

– Services provided:

• Creation of administrators.

• Production of reports.

• Bulk uploads of staff.

• Supply packs of materials to help with promoting / launching the programmes locally.

Quality Assurance Policy and Expert Reference Groups

• Every programme created by the NHS Core Learning Unit is quality assured by an Expert Reference Group (ERG) made up of nationally recognised experts in the relevant subject area.

• Each ERG meets once every 6 months to evaluate the programmes and ensure they continue to be fit for purpose.

• If there is a change in policy which causes the programmes to no longer be fit for purpose an emergency meeting of the relevant ERG can be called.

• Currently the CLU is not looking for new members to join the ERG, however, we welcome feedback and evaluation of the programmes which can then be brought to the attention of the ERG’s when they next meet.

Programmes Currently Available Update

Infection Control

• Waste and Sharps module has been updated to keep in line with the latest changes in policy in this area.

• New Clinical Modules have been launched which cover the following areas:

– An Introduction to Clinical Infection Prevention and Control.

– Vascular Access Devices 1.

– Vascular Access Devices 2.

– Short-term Catheters.

– Long-term Catheters.

– Note: The new catheter modules will not be released until the end of the year.

• Rationale for new Infection Control Clinical modules: part of the series of programmes designed to further support the infection prevention and control agenda.

Programmes Currently Available Update

Social Care

• New Social Care platform launched which contains a Social Care version of the Infection Control programme.

• Rationale for social care version: Infection Control has been identified as a national priority by the Department of Health, therefore there is a clear need for consistent and transferable learning relating to Infection Control, which can be delivered across Health and Social Care Sectors.

• Social Care version developed in consultation with SCIE and other Social Care sector organisations. Accessed at http://care.corelearningunit.nhs.uk

• Grouping on the site is organised by SHA regions.

• Currently supported by Yorks and Humber SHA and North East SHA – exploring funding options with all ten SHAs and the Department of Health.

Programmes Currently Available Update

Food, Nutrition and Hydration in Health and Social Care (Launched in August 2008)

• The programme was developed with and for the Health and Social Care Sector, and is a short 2 hour online programme, consisting of 5 modules. It is designed to support existing initiatives such as the Nutrition Action Plan and bring together some of the key tools, techniques and best practice in use in this area.

• Programme aims to:– Raise awareness and increase the understanding of the importance of

nutrition and hydration as essential ingredients of life.– Identify practical ways that all those involved in hands-on service user care;

Nurses, Carers, Health Care Assistants, Care Assistants, Volunteers, can ensure that service users consume their food and drink.

– The key message being; food and water are very important to quality of life: without them you die.

• A 6th module on the Basics of Nutrition and Hydration is coming soon – as well as further modules to be confirmed.

Food, Nutrition and Hydration in Health and Social Care (Launched in August 2008)

• Programme available on www.corelearningunit.nhs.uk for Health Sector staff and on http://care.corelearningunit.nhs.uk for Care Sector staff.

• The programme is mapped to Knowledge & Skills Framework, National Occupational Standards, the Skills Sets for Care.

• Quality Assured through a standing Expert Reference Group of Health, Social Care and education specialists.

• For the development of the programme the Expert Reference Group was broken down into two separate groups; the Technical Management Group who constructed the content and a Project Management Group who then checked that the content was fit for purpose.

Mentoring for Success (Launched in September 2008)

• Supports implementation of an effective mentoring infrastructure within a variety of health and care environments.

• Delivered face to face in the workplace by trained facilitators appointed by the Trust.

• Programme comprises of a one-day facilitated workshop, a Facilitator and Mentor pack and supporting DVD.

• The hard copy folder containing all the materials is available by contacting clpu@yorksandhumber.nhs.uk

• 1 free folder per trust – subsequent folders will need to be paid for to cover printing costs.

Upcoming Programmes

Immunisation and Vaccination

• Rationale for development: need for consistent and transferable learning for professional groups undertaking immunisations and vaccinations.

• 3-hour e-learning programme that links into further practical training through a personal action plan – guided by the learner’s clinical supervisor.

• Programme objectives:– Enhance and update knowledge and understanding of immunology and

vaccines.– Increase confidence in delivery of vaccines.– Consistently demonstrate good practice in the area of immunisation.

• Will be launched in January 2009.

Upcoming Programmes

Public Health Awareness

• NHS Core Learning Unit and the Open University are working together to create a new Public Health Awareness online training programme using existing Open University materials.

• As with all new programmes – content developed by an ERG for Public Health Awareness.

• Will be launched in January 2009.

Upcoming Programmes

Higher Education Institutions Project

• Project to explore opportunities for Higher Education Institutions (HEI) to access CLU online learning materials.

• One HEI pilot site in each SHA region.

• Pilots commence September 2008.

• Project will be complete by August 2009.

General Programmes Update

• A review and re-development of fire safety, manual handling and health and safety will be taking place within the next 6 months.

• The first of these programmes to be re-developed will be the fire safety, to ensure they are all up to date with policy and legislation, alongside updating them in line with new technology and graphics to keep the e-learning current and increase usability.

Current Core Learning Unit Platforms

• The NHS Core Learning Unit has historically had two sites – one run by Intuition who provided the Infection Control programme and another run by Serco which hosted all the other programmes.

• This was a historical decision created before CLU was established.• As some Trusts were having difficulties with the Java requirements of the Serco site.

The decision was taken to also host the other programmes on the Intuition site which did not have the Java Virtual Machine requirement which proved difficult for some organisations.

• The benefits of accessing the Intuition site for all programmes are:– One point of access for all programmes and reporting.– New programmes such as the Food, Nutrition and Hydration programme and the

Child Protection programme are only available via the Intuition site.– Lower technical requirements.

• The NHS Core Learning Unit would therefore advise that all new starters use the Intuition site http://nhsclu.intuition.com which is located at www.corelearningunit.nhs.uk and can also be accessed directly.

Future Core Learning Unit Platform

• The Serco site will continue to run for those who wish to continue using it at the present time. However, there is currently an Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) tendering process taking place for the CLU’s new Learning Management System.

• Once the tendering process has been completed there will be just the one site.

• All historical data from both sites will be kept.

– Click the My Learning tab to access your personalised training plan. This section is sub-divided into three areas to make it easier for you to find the courses, tutorials or exams you want to study.

• My Courses

This area provides an alphabetical listing of all the courses you have been assigned by your training administrator. A course is a group of tutorials and/or exams.

• Green means that you have not started the course.

• Yellow means that you have started, but not completed, the course.

• Red means that you have completed the course.

• My Progress

• This section provides you with a detailed report of your training progress. The following information is provided:

– Tutorials studied – this lists all the tutorials you have studied.

– Last study date – this details the last date you studied a given tutorial.

– Study time – this records the amount of time you spent studying each listed tutorial.

– Content viewed – this details the amount of content studied in a tutorial.

– Score – this gives you the score you received in the tutorial test, if applicable.

– Status – this gives you an indication of how far you progressed in a tutorial. The status may be: Passed: You have passed the tutorial test; Failed: You have failed the tutorial test; Completed: You have viewed all screens in the tutorial; Incomplete: You have viewed some screens but have not attempted the Evaluate phase.

• Fire Safety / Manual Handling / Health & Safety: The certificates for these programmes are located at the end of each of the assessments for each module. These need to be printed at the time of completion using the link provided as circled on the link below:

• Certificates - Infection Control: The certificate for the Infection Control programme is located in the ‘My Progress’ section of the site. To obtain your certificate please click on the link as circled on the screen below:
