Welcome to our prospectus, which takes you through the seven year journey of a Barnhill Community High School student.
At Barnhill we know and welcome every individual. Our aim is for their time at school to be successful and enjoyable, and to make sure they are ready for the outside world when they leave.
Our promise to you:
1. Students get outstanding support 2. Students do very well academically. 3. Students have real prospects when they leave 4. Students develop as rounded and grounded young people 5. Students receive first-class teaching 6. Students have a personalised pathway to success 7. We work in partnership with parents to achieve the best for the child
Barnhill has a special environment, where “everyone feels valued” (Ofsted 2012). We always strive to make improvements to our school so that it is a place in which we can all feel proud.

Years 7 and 8 When you and your child join Barnhill Community High School you become part of a winning team. We have high expectations as we believe, like you, that your child deserves an excellent education. We give everyone the support they need to settle in and to go on to achieve their personal best.
We provide a unique, exciting and flexible curriculum which means your son or daughter will work
• at the right pace• with the right challenge• and in the right groupings
We also believe passionately in developing the whole person. For us, this means our students will
• enjoy their learning• develop confidence to express themselves and take part
in new things• and have the chance to lead others and support their
peers.
By the end of Year 8 your child will be ready to move on to the next stage having developed the essential skills of solving problems, working on their own initiative and thinking for themselves.

Years 9,10 and 11In Years 9,10 and 11, your son or daughter will begin to prepare for their future. Our support programme helps students to pick the right pathways. High quality teaching, and state-of-the art facilities, means that all of our students are able to excel and achieve their potential.
We have different pathways to GCSE and other vocational courses so that all students have a curriculum that is right for their strengths. We continue to focus on personal development, and in particular, on nurturing skills that our young adults need for the next stage of their lives
• getting on with people in a variety of situtations• coping with change and new situations• and leading others in and outside school
By the end of Year 11 your child will be ready to move on and be able to
• show skills of enterprise and team working• think creatively and critically• and work in ways which suit them best
Years 12 and 13When our students reach the Sixth Form they are already “winners” having gained a whole range of achievements. Our support programmes now focus on widening their horizons, encouraging them to aim high in their career choices, and giving them the tools they need to take on the challenges ahead.
The Sixth Form programme focusses on high level qualifications. There are different pathways dependent on the individual student’s aspirations, ambitions and potential. Some students spend two or even three years on an A-level pathway to get to a top university. Others take a vocational pathway to training or an apprenticeship.
Success in Years 12/13 is not only about taking further examinations to open up doors for the future, but it is also about learning to
• manage finances• commit to life long learning• and make the right life choices
The final stage of their school career at Barnhill means they are equipped to leave us and are ready to
• make a positive contribution to their community • be resilient and resourceful in a rapidly changing world• go forward with confidence, and look back with fond memories
“From the 6th form virtually all continue into further training, higher
education or employment”

Life at BarnhillWe are proud of our extra curricular activities. Our school enriches students not only academically but socially, through a wide range of sporting, creative, artistic and cultural activities.
We encourage and expect all of our students to play a part in our local community because we feel that spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is essential. Students find making a positive contribution to their community rewarding and enjoyable; it also develops skills that are highly valued by employers and universities. The views of students are important to us, and they regularly participate in decision making through the School and Year Forums.
We expect excellent behaviour at Barnhill, and achieve this through consistently and rigorously applying our high standards. This maintains a safe, secure and happy environment in which all students learn and thrive.
We place great importance on having strong communication with parents and carers. We are available and approachable if there is ever a concern, and positively encourage feedback so that we can develop and improve further what we do.
