Eastbrook Local News: Primary Classes

We would also like to thank all the Kindergarten students and families who participated in

our October Pumpkin Project. The students enjoyed sharing with their classmates and seeing their work displayed in the hall. It’s nice to see such creative minds at work and children so enthusiastic about their accomplishments.

In November, we will be reading more nonfiction books such as nocturnal animals, hibernation and learning about the first Thanksgiving. These stories are just a few that will help reinforce standards such as main idea and key details, sequencing, and compare/contrast. Students should be able to identify author/illustrator and character/setting, as well. Kindergarten students will continue with phonemic awareness (letter sounds), letter recognition and formation. Please complete the homework and review sight words to help reinforce what we are teaching in class. In math, we will start our unit on two and three dimensional shapes.

We enjoyed our 50’s day celebration in October! We are looking forward to having Jack Hartmann in concert on November 18th. Please send in your child’s permission slip and money.

The Kindergarten teachers are very thankful for all help and support!

Happy November First Grade Families! November is a month filled with gratitude, which is so important as we gear up for the upcoming holiday season.

First of all, we are grateful to all of the members of our East-brook family who have served or are currently serving our country in the military. It is a tremendous sacrifice that you make for us, and we are forever in your debt. Military family members, please be sure to RSVP to our Veteran’s Day recognition event on Mon-day, November 11th. We are eager to honor you! Secondly, our first grade team reflects on all the good in our lives and we must note our amazing students and their families. We appreciate your continued support. Please be sure to return the Activity Fee so that the year’s remaining programs and events can continue as scheduled. November will keep us very busy. We look forward to the Staff Talent Show and Book Fair, as well as Teach In.

In Social Studies, we will discuss the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving. This ties to our history standards, to learn how peoples’ lives were so different in the past from our present. In Reading, we will return to fiction texts to closely examine charac-ters and their feelings, as well as a character’s point of view. When you read to your child at home, discuss the characters and their emotions. Please also discuss the reasons why the charac-ters are feeling those emotions. In Writing, we will work on nar-ratives in which students will write about events that have oc-curred in their own lives. It is important to encourage transition words such as first, next, then, and last to help sequence events chronologically. In Math, we continue to learn many different strategies to add and subtract. In Science, we will continue to learn about force and motion. This unit gives us the opportunity for many hands-on experiences that we are sure your child will enjoy! We hope you will have a safe and happy Thanksgiving holi-day and enjoy family time together.

Second graders will continue on their learning journey during the month of November. We will be learning about the Constitution after having learned about

American Symbols and the branches of our government. We will work on predicting and setting a purpose for our reading, comparing and contrasting as well. Our focus this month will be on sequencing events in a story, and then summarizing those stories, as well as identifying fact and opinion statements. In Writing we move from writing personal narratives to informa-tional or expository writing. During this phase of writing, we will take notes and write informational paragraphs with topic sentences and supporting details. In Math we will begin a unit on shapes or geometry. Working at home on knowledge of basic facts would benefit everyone. In Science we will begin the study of energy and move into forces and changes in mo-tion. We will explore magnets.

Teach-In is November 12th. There is still time to sign up if you are interested in sharing your job or an interesting hobby that you have with your child’s class. Please contact your child’s teacher if you are interested. There was also infor-mation attached to the back of the October Newsletter.

As always, thank you for your support in sending your student to school on time, reminding them of the School-Wide Expec-tations and encouraging them to read, complete their home-work and practice their math facts nightly.

We are now starting to feel the wonderful changes that the autumn season brings. Even though we have few visual reminders of the season

with our Florida weather, we still have lots to discuss. With Thanksgiving around the corner, what a perfect time to share all that we have to be thankful for. We will be learn-ing all about how our indigenous people of the land (Native American Indians) helped the Pilgrims through a very hard win-ter by showing them how to survive by planting crops, hunting and fishing for food and how to build a home in the wilderness. By working together and sharing in the harvest bounty they were able to grow and thrive as one of the first settlers in this coun-try. We will be reading several children’s stories which depicts this genre i.e., “Sarah Morton’s Day” and “Samuel Eaton’s Day” which describes the very difficult life of the first settlers in the eyes of a young pilgrim girl and boy. After reading this story we will embark on a very broad discussion of how different things are today since the first settlers arrived here in the new world by using compare and contrast concepts (same/different). Our Letter People will of course join in the all the fun too. We will invite Mr. Ii to share his information about the many differ-ent Indian tribes and their customs. He will also help us count to 10 with our Indian song. Mr. Pp will bring the popcorn for our reenactment of an Indian Pow-Wow and Mr. Tt will be “talking turkey tales and teaching us about our own Thanksgiving tradi-tions. Please note that there will be no school the week of Nov. 25-29. (Classes will resume Monday, December 2nd.) We wish all our families a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Families and Happy November! We have been working hard this month and having so much fun learning!

In reading, students are still working with nonfiction text. They have been learning about how an author has a point of view when they write, and that they also have a point of view when they read! It's interesting to see if their point of view differs from the author's and why. We have also been stud-ying a variety of historical texts about great women in histo-ry like Amelia Earhart and Eleanor Roosevelt and trying to find connections between important events in history. The students love to make timelines of the important events and also of their own lives during this unit. In math, we are working on multiplication and division all through the month of November. Now that they have a solid conceptual base for each of these, they are figuring out the relationship between the two. They are finding unknown num-bers in both multiplication and division problems and solving multi-step word problems with all four operations. In science we have been studying energy (heat, light, sound, mechanical, and electrical energy) with an emphasis on light energy. Students are learning through observations and hands-on experiments to really understand these concepts. These kids work hard! Our Legoland field trip is November 8th where students will be able to participate in a STEM class involving Legos! We hope everyone has a restful Thanksgiving break and we'll see you back in December!

Reminder from our School Board Nurse

Seminole County Medication Policy requires that for any

prescription or over the counter medication to be given at

school to an elementary student, an authorization (form 157)

must be filled out by the physician and signed by the parent.

Medication is to be signed in to the clinic by the parent or

designated adult and not sent with the child. Medication will

not be signed in without a completed authorization.

State law does allow for certain emergency medications such

as asthma inhalers and epi-pens to be carried and self-

administered with the appropriate authorization from the

physician and parent. For the complete medication policy and

required forms please visit SCPS website and go to Health

Services under the parent tab.

Fourth grade students are hard at work in our classrooms! Language Arts classes have very fo-cused on learning the writing process and reading lots of different kinds of informational texts.

We will continue to discuss main idea and details, para-phrasing and finding evidence in our texts to support an-swers. We are also starting to learn how to plan and elab-orate on evidence in our writing. Please make sure your child is completing his/her homework weekly and reading at least 20 minutes a night. We are also working on try-ing to read as many of the 15 Sunshine State Books as possible. These books are available in the library for your student to check-out weekly! The first half of November will be wrapping up our factors, multiples and division unit. After our unit test, we will move on to our next critical area of study: Fractions! This month we will focus on fraction equivalence. Fluency with basic multiplication facts will help find equivalent fractions so continue to practice!

Please make sure you are in contact with your child’s teacher about his/her attendance on the St. Augustine field trip, and about final payments. The last payment is due December 21st, and we must start providing final at-tendance numbers to the tour company – it is important that you confirm and pay your balance ASAP! Thank you

Fifth grade has had a great first grading

period! In Math we wrapped up adding and subtracting numbers with decimals. Next we will be multiplying and dividing with decimals. In Science we are finishing our unit on Electricity. Our next unit is Force and Motion. In ELA we recently began to dive into Writ-ing! We've started expanding our "P.E.EL" para-graphs into "P.E.EL.E.EL.P" paragraphs ("longer PEEL paragraphs") and writing on the topic Under-water Exploration. We have finished compar-ing multiple accounts of the Titanic using a variety of texts. Up next is Ruby Bridges where we will be focusing on relationships in the text and using rea-sons and evidence. Please listen to your child read out loud along with independent reading.

There is still time to send in the speaker registra-tion form for Teach In. Let your child’s teacher know if you would like the form.

We hope all is well as you enter the holiday season. We are so happy that the weather is cooling down. It is a wonderful time to go out after school or work for a walk or a game of basketball or football. Speaking of basketball and football, we have wrapped up our skill and game units in each of those sports and we have moved on to jump rope skills and some skill games like battleship, castle ball and sharks and minnows. We also plan on playing games like capture the flag, team handball and softball. Our cross-country season has started, and we are encouraged by the number of students who have signed up to participate this year. It is too late to sign up, but you can always encourage those students who are on the team.

Our Kids Heart Challenge has just begun as I am writing this, and we have already collected a great deal of money. Stay tuned as we announce the final total near the end of November. Also, don’t forget that Country Wester Day is going to be on December 6th. You should receive some information soon explaining more about this exciting event. This is an opportunity for family members to come to the school and perform some line dances with their little ones during their PAM times. This is always a fun filled event and we look forward to seeing you there.

As always, we wish you good health and happiness and we appreciate all that you do for our community and school. See you soon.

In STEM we are continuing to focus on sharing and discussing ideas with oth-er teammates. These ideas are combined into a single team plan that will be constructed according to the criteria and constraints of the task. Students are using critical thinking skills to connect science and math concepts to their project using the steps of the Engineering Design Process.

During the month of November, third grade students will be challenged to think like a struc-tural engineer to find the weak and strong parts of a basket to ensure their pumpkins don’t fall through the bottom. Fourth grade students will construct a typical southeastern Native American home as an extension of the regular classroom instruction on Florida history. Fifth grade students will be challenged with demonstrating how the amount of mass an ob-ject has will change the effect of the force given to another object’s motion.

I could use the following recyclable items for projects: empty paper towel rolls (for sani-tary reasons, no toilet paper rolls please), thin sheets of cardboard (often times found in packs of paper), and copy paper box lids (just the lid, not the box). If you have any of these items, please send them in with your child. Thank you in advance for your support!

A light breakfast for Veterans and their families will be served at 9:15 that morning.

Please be sure to return this form so you will be on the list.
