Greetings from Harvesters, We are so blessed to continue to have missionaries wanting to partner with Harvesters as we serve the South Sudanese. One of those missionary couples is Karl and Rachel Anderson and they are planning on overseeing the Joshua and Esther Vocational Training Center in Yei for us. We are so excited to have these buildings going up by one of our very first orphans, Santino. His construction firm, Hope Construction, has already built a number of beautiful and sturdy buildings and we eagerly look forward to the completion of this project toward the end of this year or early in 2015. When Santino came to us years ago, the future of Sudan looked very bleak, and now it is wonderful to see how God has worked in his life, given him passion, skill and a desire to help the local community by laying a strong foundation. This foundation is not just represented in the excellent buildings he has overseen the construction of, but it is also represented in the excellent work ethic he demonstrates. Every day that our orphans and students see him, his craftsmanship and crews at work, they are seeing hope realized before their eyes. It is a snapshot of what can be and it is something that would have seemed unimaginable and impossible a few years ago but for God. We stand in awe of the reminder that with Him, all things are possible (Matt. 19:26). This Center will not only help our orphans and students in our school with skills to live in the community, but it will also teach them to be self-sufficient. However, this Center will not simply teach a skill or vocation, we will also have daily devotions and teach English and math classes in the training center along with all the programs we will be offering. We know that 1 Corinthians 8:1 tells us that knowledge alone puffs up while love builds up. And that is true, knowledge without God’s love just leads to pride but I believe that education begins with the reality of God’s existence and the fact that He has communicated through creation, His Word, and His Son. As Solomon says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” When we combine Godly wisdom with education, building character and a strong work ethic, we have seen God use this to mold us into good Christian witnesses for Him. Our missionaries, staff and now older orphans are seeing the fruit of leading by word and deed. We need to let our light shine in whatever we are doing for Christ. We had so many relatives of our students asking us to please teach their children skills like this along with book education. They know the importance of hands-on work and we are excited to help out the community in this way. We are so appreciative for all our supporters for this vital project. Greetings from Harvesters,

We are so blessed to continue to have missionaries wanting to partner with Harvesters as we serve the South Sudanese.

As Solomon says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”

When we combine Godly wisdom with education, building character and a strong work ethic, we have seen God use this to mold us into good Christian witnesses for Him.

We are asking for those who have a heart to see this Center finished and open to pray and consider giving toward it.

In November of 2012, Rachel and I visited Harvesters for the first time. We prayed that God would make it clear for us as to what this trip would bring in our lives. After coming home from South Sudan, we spoke with Mama Lilly and Pastor Dennis and they asked us to become a part of Harvesters, focusing on the vocational school. We agreed and began to work in earnest towards that goal. In December of 2013, we arrived in Yei and began this new journey that God has allowed us to be a part of. Visiting with Pastor Dennis and Mama Lilly, we see the plan for the Joshua and Esther Vocational Training School coming together and still in process but, the goal is that kids who wish to pursue vocational training in lieu of university will have an opportunity to do so at Harvesters and they will continue to be discipled through that extension of Harvesters Reaching the Nations.

When Mama Lilly and Pastor came here first in 2001, Harvesters emerged with this verse as the focal point, “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress.” James 1:27. The vocational school is a continuation of this commitment to feed, clothe, educate, disciple and train for life. We also desire for these wonderful kids to see the dignity and respect that is instilled in these professions, the necessity of them and the many opportunities that will be made available to them if they work hard at it.

While in Uganda during the violence in December, we were able to visit with Lance and Kim Klepp (Harvesters’ Terekeka directors) and several organizations similar to Harvesters. They all shared an emphasis on the same Biblical devotion to their children but also shared in the vocational training aspect. One organization we visited had the following verse on their wall as they shared their focus on discipleship through the trades. Exodus 35:31-33, “And he has filled Him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge and in all craftsmanship…. He has filled them with skills to do all kinds of work as designers, tailors, weavers, carpenters, all of them master craftsmen and designers.”

South Sudan as we know, is still emerging from decades of civil war and those generations that grew up with skills in farming, carpentry, tailoring, mechanical, many of them have grown old or vanished altogether. Despite this troubling news, we hear and see from a precious few Sudanese and many foreigners (Indian, Pakistani, Ugandan, Ethiopian and Eritrean) that there is great opportunity here in South Sudan and limitless growth potential, especially as we see the political and tribal climate continue to calm down.

Harvesters’ hope is to use this outlet to raise up South Sudanese men and women to fill these roles that hold so much potential and opportunity. Our prayer and desire is that they will become leaders in their communities and pass on their wisdom and faith to their families and spheres of influence. That this cycle of war and displacement will cease and the environment for opportunity will grow. We are grateful to God for this opportunity to be a part of this new venture and pray that God will continue to use this ministry to raise up godly kids into godly husbands, wives, moms and dads.

Joshua & Esther Vocational Center Update

As many of you know, the J&E Center is a vocational school designed to provide opportunities to our older children who have expressed a desire to develop skill sets through a trade such as carpentry, computer technology, sewing and crafts and so on. Ultimately, equipping them to join the work force in their community. While the building progress was slow in 2013 due to othermore time sensitive projects, we will be working hard to complete the center in time for its Grand Opening in early 2015.

One of our orphans who will be benefiting from the J&E Center’s carpentry program is a teenage boy, Benson Yole. “Yole”, as he’s known, is in Primary 8 (8th grade) this year and will be sitting for his PLE exams, which is the last one in preparation to join Secondary school. He is doing well and has greatly improved in his school performance. When Yole was first brought to Harvesters as a young boy we were unaware of skills which were later revealed in his appreciation and observation of Pastor Dennis performing his duties in the workshop. It was in the workshop where this talented boy would voluntarily assist Pastor Dennis with construction and doing other needed maintenance around Harvesters’ Yei campus. We are excited for Yole’s future and looking forward to seeing what comes of Yole mastering a trade.

Here is an outline of the J&E Center buildings along with their status of completion:

Below is an image of the center’s plan along with photos of the building progress that has been made thus far. The remaining fundsneeded to complete the building of the J&E Center come to $105,600. Should this project be of interest to you, we ask you to please prayerfully consider contributing to its completion so that we can begin providing the teaching and tools necessary to equipthese aspiring students of trade. Donations to the Joshua & Esther Vocational Center fund will be used for this purpose. Any funds received in excess of that particular need will be considered a contribution to the entire mission of HRTN and will be used where needed most to help meet Harvesters' mission to provide discipleship, education and health care to orphans as well as vulnerable women and children in remote regions of the world.

Priscilla Yatta Abel

Priscilla Abel is especially liking her English class in school this year. Outside of class, she really enjoys reading novels and playing with her friend, Eva. Priscilla really has a heart for the things of God and would like to become a missionary one day. If she could visit anywhere in the world, she would like to visit Asia.

The most important thing to her is knowing God hears her prayers and she is most thankful for the education she is receiving at Harvesters. Her favorite Bible verse is Romans 10:13, which says, “for, everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” Please pray for God’s continued blessing and guidance in Priscilla’s life.
