Message from the Head Teacher Opportunities for our students to engage with as many different positive experiences as possible is a really important part of what we do at Bucklers Mead, which is why I am so happy about the positive feedback I have received following the visit on Tuesday of published author, Ele Fountain. Ele is the author of one of our Read to Succeed books, Boy 87, and a big thank you is needed for Mrs Howe and Mrs Hopkins for organising this. They have let me know that Ele was thoroughly impressed with our students and the school in general, commenting on how nice the area was and how courteous the students were on her arrival. She thought the Year 7’s were wonderful and came up with some incredible ideas for their story writing during the workshops. Outstanding feedback. On top of this it has been National Careers week with all sorts of activities linked to what the future might hold for our students. Message from the Head Teacher

Opportunities for our students to engage with as many different positive experiences as possible is a really important part of what we do at Buckler’s Mead, which is why I am so happy about the positive feedback I have received following the visit on Tuesday of published author, Ele Fountain. The week has finished with the all-important GCSE Drama practical exam, so our good luck goes to the Mrs Browncey, Miss Ralph and the Drama team.

11 MH are currently reading Moonfleet

by J Meade Falkner

Orphaned John Trenchard grows up in the village of Moonfleet with his aunt, entranced by the local legend of the ghostly Blackbeard, who rises each winter night to search for his lost diamond. While conducting his own hunt for the treasure, John is trapped in the

church crypt and discovers the true secret of the village: smuggling. Taken under the wing of the gruff innkeeper and chief smuggler,

Elzevir Block, John begins a dangerous adventure which will see him in a hair-raising chase along a precarious cliff path and deciphering a

hidden code in an ancient castle. Moonfleet is thrilling story of revenge and betrayal, of loyalty and great sacrifice, but it is above all

a story about friendship..

Ele Fountain Visit Students were lucky to have a visit from book author Ele Fountain. Ele wrote Boy 87 which is one of the

book our year 7 students have been reading during Read to Succeed. Ele gave a lovely presentation

and talk about her time living in Ethiopia and where the inspiration for Boy 87 came from as well as

holding a workshop and questions and answers session. Students were also able to get their copy of her

book signed by her.

We would like to thank Ele for coming and spending the day with us especially as she is busy with the

launch of her second book Lost which will be released on 12 March. The students were really inspired

and engaged having been given a wonderful insight into being an author.

Last week Year 7 had a fruity Friday! Fruit Salad looking good enough to eat. Specially prepared by several LSB Hub pupils and their classmates.

Dear Parent/Carer,

You will have heard a lot in the news about the spread of the Coronavirus, attached is some further

information.

Coronavirus, still prepared – latest advice

There are no positive COVID-19 cases in the South West, but our local health and care services are well

prepared with well-rehearsed plans in place to deal with any potential outbreaks.

We would like to reassure people that, should a case be confirmed anywhere in the country, Public

Health England would contact all those who have come into close contact with them and give specific

advice of what action to take.

Government advice is reviewed daily and updated regularly. For the latest information, advice and

guidance, check out https://www.gov.uk/guidance/wuhan-novel-coronavirus-information-for-the-public.

The most recent advice (25 February) states that if you have travelled to the UK from mainland China,

Thailand, Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia or Macau in the last 14

days and are experiencing cough, fever or shortness of breath, to stay indoors and call NHS 111, even if

symptoms are mild.

If you have returned from these specific areas since February 19, you should call NHS 111 and stay

indoors and avoid contact with other people even if you do not have symptoms:

Iran

Specific lockdown areas in Northern Italy as designated by the Government of Italy

Special care zones in South Korea as designated by the Government of the Republic of South Korea

Hubei province (returned in the past 14 days)

If you have returned from the following areas since February 19 and develop symptoms, however mild,

you should stay indoors at home and avoid contact with other people immediately and call NHS 111.

You do not need to follow this advice if you have no symptoms.

Northern Italy (defined by a line above, and not including, Pisa, Florence and Rimini),

Vietnam

Cambodia

Laos

Myanmar
