The Off-Campus Program was one of the main reasons why I applied to BU. I did not want to move out of the area I had been living and working in. Part of what made my time at BU so special was the fact that I got to know my classmates so well through the cohort experience. I chose this program because I wanted a high quality education without having to commute too far. I got all that and much more. I’m so proud to have BU on my resume and feel well prepared for my career.

As with many students, I have additional responsibilities of work and family to consider. The Off-Campus Program afforded me the opportunity to continue my studies and care for my family. The classes, professors, staff, and fellow colleagues created a life-changing experience. The coursework has been challenging. The faculty members have been very supportive, engaging, and thought-provoking. I wholeheartedly recommend the program to anyone contemplating a career in social work.

The BU School of Social Work Off-Campus Program is ideal for individuals seeking to expand their knowledge and skills, advance professionally, and become eligible for professional licensure. Courses are taught by distinguished BU School of Social Work faculty.

We recognize that many adult learners are managing multiple demands. Our Off-Campus Program is tailored to the busy, non-traditional student. Students graduate in less than three years and complete field internships within their own communities.

• Take 1 course at a time

• Finish a course over 4 weekends

• Attend classes 30 weekends per year

• Enroll in field internships during your 2nd and 3rd years*

• Benefit from the peer support of your cohort

• Continue to live and work in your community

• Complete the entire degree at the off-campus location

* Advanced Standing students enroll in field internships during their 2nd semester.

Our Programs• Traditional: An eight semester, 65–credit program with two field internships.

• Advanced Standing: A six semester, 40–43 credit program with a single field internship.

PART-TIME, CLINICAL PRACTICE SOCIAL WORK PROGRAM

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must have, or expect to have, a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. We also consider:

• Previous academic performance and background*

• Practice experience and commitment to the social work profession

• Personal qualifications and references

• Advanced Standing applicants must submit their final field evaluation from their senior year in order to be considered for admission.

• Apply online at bu.edu/ssw/admissions/apply* Standardized tests may be required based on the applicant’s grade point average. Advanced Standing applicants must have a minimum undergraduate academic average of 3.0 (B) and have earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree within six years of entry into the program.

Financial Aid

Financial assistance is available to eligible students enrolled in a minimum of six credits (two courses) per semester. In addition, BU offers a flexible tuition repayment plan.

Curriculum

Students take foundation courses in human behavior, social welfare policy, research, racial justice, and clinical and macro practice. Advanced curriculum includes courses in brief treatment, trauma, substance abuse, and psychopathology. Classes are held on Fridays from 6–9 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9 a.m.–1 p.m.

Field Education

Field education is a dynamic and integral part of our curriculum. Students integrate classroom theories and principles into hands-on practice internships. Students enroll in field internships concurrently with academic courses. Traditional students enroll in field internships in their second and third years in the Program. Advanced Standing students enroll in field internships in their second semester.

• Utilize our longstanding relationships with numerous agencies throughout New England ensuring a wide choice of internships

• Select an internship within or near your community** Internships must occur during normal business hours for field agencies.

After volunteering at the Edith Nourse Rogers Veterans Hospital in Bedford, MA, I decided to return to school and get my Master of Social Work degree to assist my fellow veterans with their transition back to civilian life. I chose BU because of the school’s great reputation. The Off-Campus Program afforded me the flexibility and convenience I needed to pursue my MSW. My cohort was part of my family for three years and we continue to stay connected. I have the academic credentials and a rich exposure to the field of clinical social work to suit me well in my career—I’m now a Readjustment Counselor for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Lowell Vet Center.
