Q4)A 45mm diameter shaft is made of steel with a yield strength of 400 MPa.A parallel key of size 14mm wide and 9 mm thick made of steel with a yield strength of 340MPa is to be used .Find the required length of key , if the shaft is loaded to transmit the maximum permissible torque .Use maximum shear stress theory and assume a factor of safety of 2. [3+4] Q5) A shaft carrying a pulley A and gear B and supported in two bearings C and D. The shaft transmits 20 kW at 150 rpm the tangential force F t on gear B acts vertically upwards. The pulley delivers the power through a belt to another pulley of equal diameter vertically below the pulley A. The ratio of tension T1/T2=2.5. Weights of gear and pulley are 900N and 2700N.The permissible shear stress for the material of shaft may be taken as 63MPa. Take km=2 and kt=1.5. Determine the diameter of the shaft

Part – A (Questions from Tutorial Sheet)

[10 Marks] Q1) Define equivalent twisting moment and equivalent bending moment. State when these two terms are used in the design of shaft. [Q.NO.3][2+2+1] Q2) Design a muff coupling, which is used to connect two steel shafts transmitting 25 KW power at 310 rpm. The shaft and keys are made of same plain carbon steel (syt =syc=400N/mm2). The sleeve is made from grey cast iron FG200. The factor of safety for the shaft and key is 4. For sleeve the factor of safety is 6 based on ultimate strength. [Q.NO.9][2+2+1]
