Preparing your locationHave you ever walked into a shop or café and immediately turned around and left? Why? Your team will need to decide where to locate your micro enterprise. Having goods and services ready in the location is the first challenge. However, if customers are going to buy them, they will need to look inviting and encourage the customer to investigate more.

Understanding your locationThe location where goods and services are sold can be:

● physical, such as a shop or market stall ● virtual, such as a website.

In both instances, the products must be displayed in a way that makes it easy for the customer to view and access information.

With your team, discuss ideas for the location of your micro enterprise. Will it be physical or virtual? Write a list of what you will need to have in your location in order to sell your product or offer your service in the best possible way.

ACTIV IT Y

DisplayYou have put a lot of effort into sourcing the components to make your product (see the previous lesson), so now you need to ensure you can attract customers. When planning your location, it is important to think about how products will be displayed, as Figure 2.6 shows.

A specially designedplatform?

Shelves?

Display racks?Menus?

Windows?Anything else?

What will I need todisplay my products in

a physical location?

Figure 2.6: What else can you add to this mind map?

Some goods may require specific conditions. For example: ● some foods or drinks may need to be kept in a chiller or covered to protect them

from bacteria ● some goods may be breakable, so they will need a display cabinet to protect them.

Can you think of any other specific conditions or requirements? Will you require anything like this for your micro enterprise?

G E T T I N G S T A R T E D

In a pair, think about the first time you visited an enterprise such as a shop, a leisure facility or a webpage. What information were you looking for? How was this presented to you? Imagine walking into a store for the first time to buy goods. All of the goods are on display but there is no other information. What questions would you ask the shop assistant?

Sketch or make a model of the proposed layout for your enterprise activity.

ACTIV IT Y

How important is the display of products when attracting the attention of customers?

Display information is a form of promotional material. It needs to be clear and, by law, must be accurate. It can include:

● the product name or name of the service ● the price of a single item, or of buying in bulk ● features and functions ● ingredients or what the product is made from ● promotional offers ● whether anything else is required to make the product work; for example, batteries.

1 Select one product or service that will be supplied by your enterprise.

a) If you have chosen a product, design a label to be displayed alongside it. If you have chosen a service, design a flyer to describe and inform potential customers about it.

b) Collect feedback from other members of your group or class on the accuracy and clarity of your label or flyer.

ACTIV IT Y

Think about the other ways in which businesses display information about their goods or services. Your team will need to display promotional materials in other places, as well as your enterprise’s location, in order to generate interest in what you are offering. Which methods might be effective for your micro enterprise?

1 Explain why it is important to display products in an eye-catching and appealing way.

2 Imagine you are creating a leaflet for a product or service sold by your micro enterprise. List the information that should be included in the leaflet.

CHECK MY LEARNING

In the UK, there are laws that govern how prices are shown. For example, a retailer must show prices in sterling (pounds and pence), show the unit price for items sold individually and use metric measures (kg, ltr, cm) for unit pricing. One exception to the rule is beer, where prices are still shown by the pint!
