KS5 Physical Education at Featherstone High School Curriculum Information KS5 Core PE All pupils have 2 core PE lessons a fortnight focusing on skills and tactics in a range of different sports. You will be able to participate in a variety of team activities as well as those which will challenge you individually. Pupils may also complete a Level 3 qualification from one of the following options: BTEC National Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport Level 3 Extended Certificate in Sport & Exercise Science Pupils study four units of which three are mandatory and two are external based on Functional Anatomy and Physiology. Mandatory content (83%). External assessment (67%). GCE A Level PE (Edexcel) Students will receive a well-rounded and full introduction to the world of PE, sport and sport science through the combination of physical performance and academic challenges. The new specification content encourages students to contextualise theory and to develop and apply their knowledge, understanding and quality of performances in practical assessments. The A Level Specification reflects today’s global world – students will engage with key issues and themes relating to contemporary global influences on physical education and sport. It also develops transferable skills for progression to higher education. The blend of scientific and social knowledge positions candidates to access the numerous physical education, sport and physical activity higher education programmes. Assessment Procedures School assessments take place for years 12 and 13 once a term. BTEC Level 3 Pupils following the level 3 BTEC complete coursework throughout year 12 and 13 as well as sitting two external assessments. One written exam focusing on functional anatomy and physiology and one written controlled assessment focusing on Fitness procedures. A level PE Pupils are assessed throughout years 12 and 13 in both practical and theoretical aspects of the course. The final practical moderation takes place in April year 13, followed by two final exams in May/June. Progression CAREER PATHWAYS: Employment opportunities include Health & Fitness Instructor, Coaching Assistant, PE Teacher, Coach, Gym Instructor and Sports Scientist. Pupils progress from these courses into either an apprenticeship in Sport or a Higher Education degree. Enrichment Over 50 enrichment clubs are run by the PE department across the two week timetable at both lunch times and after school. The enrichment clubs cover a range of activities including: football, netball, rounders, cricket, trampolining, climbing, athletics, and Fitness clubs. Pupils have the opportunity to take part in both inter and intra school competitions. Inter-house competitions take place throughout the year for all year groups including a whole school sports day in the summer term. Teams also represent FHS within a range of borough competitions.
